I think Angela dying before you can even process what is happening makes it feel very real. The weird dreamlike state that comes after sudden loss perfectly replicated. That being said we were all really frustrated about this at the time, but it drives a lot that comes next
It only happened this way because the actress did not come back to the show. I'm sure the original script would have been a better, more beautiful ending for Angela.
40:08 that's Sam Esmail, creator of the show. I've read that they had to shot this scene so many times because he kept blinking too much and Rami Malek had to give him acting tips.
I honestly think that the state you were in the whole episode is what they were going for - pretty much putting us in Elliot shoes, who just does things on autopilot without trying to process what happened.
I feel like having the episode start with Angela's death forces you to momentarily compartmentalize it, like Elliot does. You're watching the show, it instantly keeps going, you have no choice. It's like a taste of how Elliot is hiding from the pain of it
Angela's death was by design. The state that you were is exactly what they wanted. They wanted us to be exactly as Elliot. Detached. Dissociated. Numb. Mr robot talking to us was one hell of a sudden change. At the end with Sam showing up to tell us goodbye friend, and given how this show likes to take its swerves, I honestly thought that Elliot was dying.
From an THR article in 2019: According to Esmail, Angela’s death wasn’t necessarily always in the cards; in fact, it was a plan that came to the surface once he and his writers examined where they left the character in season three. “With character deaths, a couple are pre-planned, but for most of them we find our way,” he tells THR. “It’s what happened with Joanna (Stephanie Corneliussen) in season three. We start pitching out the storyline, and then we figure out the organic end to the characters. Does it start to get ridiculous if these characters continue living on if the threats and stakes on them are so high? With Angela’s character, any sort of capitulation felt like a betrayal to who she was and what she represented in the first three seasons. Unless we pulled punches, there was no way Whiterose was going to let her continue living and going out in the wild to figure out the machine with what Whiterose had divulged to her. We felt that if we were being honest, it was the only end to her character.” “Before we even talked about this as the final season,” Esmail continues, “we knew we had to continue that scene from the third season finale [in which Price reveals he’s Angela’s father]. It was after that where we took a step back and said, ‘Wow.’ We were all shocked. We love this character. Opening on that was so heartbreaking. We were also pissed off at ourselves. We kept asking: ‘Is there a way we can save her?’ And we couldn’t.” Not that he and his team didn’t try, of course. “You do this thing in the writers’ room where you box yourself into a corner and say, ‘Ah, we’ll get out of it next season,'” he says. “We came up with ridiculous ways to get out of the situation. We tried to jump through some hoops. She went to Kansas at one point and went into hiding in the witness protection program. But we felt we were avoiding the inevitable. It also made Angela into a runner. Going into hiding felt like a betrayal of who she was. She always stood for her principles, even when she was in these precarious positions. She always stood for what she believed in. That’s ultimately what drove us to begin the season with that scene, and to continue on with it. We also thought with Price, there was no way that with his relationship to Whiterose and how he’s under her thumb, that there was any way for him to protect Angela anymore. We also didn’t like the idea of Angela needing Price to protect her. It was a confluence of things that made us have to be honest with our characters and honest with our storytelling.”
I’m of the opinion that Angela dying at the beginning of this episode had nothing to do with external circumstances and was simply intentional from a creative standpoint. Personally, I thought it was genius, especially how it continued seamlessly from the recap. The shock of it was definitely meant to set the tone for the entire season, and I do think Angela was going to die anyway, with how her story was going last season. They chose to make it happen in the first couple minutes of the season (instead of, say, at the end of S3) on purpose. To devastating effect.
Yeah it’s cope and the they cling onto the side effect of the situation as hope. Voluntarily mentally rewriting reality to fit their wants. Extremely ironic for a fan of Mr robot to do that. Downright hilarious honestly
From what I read in an interview, there was no problem with Portia. By the looks of it, she loves the show and this job as much as she always has. Sam Smail said that this was the only possible outcome for Angela, death, as she would never accept ignoring what the Dark Arm did. That's not what happened if you followed the drama at the time. She was in a relationship with Rami Malek, he cheated on her with Lucy Boynton when they shot Bohemian Rhapsody and the cast all took his side. Doubleday would post a lot about how close she was with the other actresses on the show, calling them sisters and stuff then when all this went down she unfollowed them on all social media platforms. Which is why she doesn't share any scenes with the rest of the main cast in the few scenes she's in, in season 4.

Best season for me, and the fact they made last season so good made me love this show so much more, last season is always hardest to do well, as it shows with many other shows who always kinda fail short with last season, but Mr Robot did fantastic job every season and season 4 is masterpiece!

Incredible writing and acting in both and both showrunners had a plan and nailed it.
Fun fact, the whole story was written as a film and then later stretched for a TV show. All major story beats were decided on before the first season was made and then additional material was added to fill the time between.
Anyone saying they know for sure what happened behind the scenes is a liar. No one actually knows other than the creators/actors involved. That being said, Angela's storyline was at a dead end anyway. There was nothing else to put her character through, so having her be a tragic figure works in context of the show's tone.
40:12 Good bye friend... It is the director, Sam Esmail, if you remember in chapter 1 temp 1 he says that some men in black follow him... one of them on the train is this same character, since chapter 1 Price is following and aware of everything Elliott
Such a devastating intro 😭 our poor baby girl Angela. She deserved so much better. But this is the way of life. We don’t always get what we deserve. Seeing her finally come to terms and accept the reality of her actions was so cathartic. But then her desire for revenge that Price tried to shut down so that White Rose wouldn’t kill her.. on the one hand I agree with price, he just needed more time and he might’ve been able to convince her. But I think White Rose knew better than to underestimate her. White Rose knew that she’s capable of more than most people think she is and that her desire for revenge wouldn’t be able to be brushed aside and simply forgotten A shame that Portia Doubleday won’t be acting anymore but I’m glad she’s pursuing what makes her happy! She was a welcome addition to this show and played her character excellently. Gone but not forgotten ❤ thanks for the memories
lmao I dont think the actress wanted out. Her death was actually nicely done because you dont expect it, and it impacts Elliot`s development as well. If they always just put characters death at the end of episodes like you want, then its never gonna surprise anyone.
Not a perfect 1:1 replacement in terms of themes etc. but a fantastic show that stood the test of time you could watch after this one is The Wire. Absolute classic. Or The Shield. Another great show nobody will ever react to.
The Shield is amazing, and in my opinion has the best series finale of any TV show, possibly even rivaling Breaking Bad. I think the only other show whose finale is considered better is Six Feet Under. It's a pretty good show, not as good as Breaking Bad or The Shield, but it does have a series finale that is as good as The Shield. As for reactions, I totally agree, there is literally only one reaction channel here on RUclips that I've seen who was doing The Shield. I watched the whole series with them, but I didn't really like their reaction.
It originally wasn't planned to have Angela die in the show. However, the actress Portia was occupied with another project ('Fantasy Island') that made it hard to her to keep up with filming at the time, so they had to find a way around her early exit. She explained in an interview that she had thought about it for months and months before making the decision. But yeah, the thought of filming in Fiji for one project and then having to film for another in NYC I think would have been hard to maintain.
50:54 Exactly! it was so rude. Killing off an integral character in the first 10 mins of a new season from the continuation of a scene in the last season is beyond disrespectful. Borderline shock value at that point. That being said it does serve it's purpose effectively of setting the tone of final season. The kid gloves are off and the audience is on the hardest difficulty.
Esmail informed all cast members what there deaths would be from the beginning. The actor for Angela agreed and filmed that scene way back in S3 filming
Spoilers for the ending of the show. My thoughts on Angela and Price. Not in-depth. Kinda just a look at their last scene. “Remove all emotion and you‘ll do just fine”. Even though she dies, Angela getting to throw those words back in Price's face is the ultimate win for her character and she knows it. In a way, it's her finally getting a win against the system she was fighting against from the beginning. She spends the first two seasons desperately trying to get justice for her mother, against a system that seems untouchable. It's that soul crushing feeling of never being able to win against these people, that makes her susceptible to White Rose's manipulation in the first place. But now that she knows that her biological father is one of the perpetrators of the very system that killed her mother, she’s able to expose his hypocrisy. She's had a relationship with Price, one of the most powerful men in the world, and she sees how much of a hypocrite he is. If Price had heeded his own words, Angela would have never been in this position. Price spends his entire life trying to be the most powerful man in any room. He tells himself that the only way to do that is by "removing all emotion". Become a cold corporate monster, that feels nothing. This is what drives a wedge between him and Angela's mother. He chooses power over having human connection but it ultimately doesn't fulfill him. Deep down he regrets looking the other way, especially when Angela's mother gets cancer. Deep down he's ultimately lonely at the top of E corp. He can't even tell anyone his real birthday because that would make him vulnerable; opening himself up to other powerful people getting leverage on him. But even with all that power, he can't resist trying to have some kind of connection with his daughter. If he had treated Angela like any other random employee, she would have been fine. He could have easily gotten her to drop the contingency in the Township case and then never seen her again. But no. Price continues to indulge her because of his own selfish need to have some kind of connection. Giving his daughter what she wants, making her happy, is more fulfilling to Price than all the power in the world. Price lets her move to risk management in S2, AFTER she's already dropped the contingency on the Township case. At that point he's already done what White Rose wanted. He should be done. But Price doesn't leave. He lets Angela move to risk management. It's this one decision that leads to Angela getting sensitive documents on the power plant, which puts her firmly in White Rose's crosshairs. If Price removed his emotion and just manipulated Angela, she would likely be alive. But It’s Angela's death that forces Price to confront his hypocrisy. And because he realizes his hypocrisy and his failures, he turns on White Rose. "World catastrophes aren't caused by lone wolves like you. They happen because men like me allow them." Price turning on White Rose, is what ultimately "allows" Elliot and Darlene to win in they end. They absolutely could not have taken down the Deus Group or the machine without Price's knowledge and position. Angela struggled with feelings of low self esteem for the entire show but her last words are her getting a win over Price, exposing how powerless and hypocritical this "powerful" man really is. Having the uperhand over Price in this moment is cathartic for her. Just look at the wry smile on her face as she deliver the "remove all emotion" line. She knows she has value and self-worth in this moment. She knows her death will haunt Price. And in the end Angela's original mission, getting justice for her mother, is completed. Unfortunately she never lives to see it.
You know you got a great show when you actually feel sorry for the objectively evil CEO. Sure he didnt do more but I actually believe he didnt want this to be so bad. Evil dude but damn he got played and ruined.
your strong connection/response to angela is interesting to me because i was never particularly invested in her story. hard to relate. it definitely felt out of nowhere but it didnt take me out of the episode. i only really cared about her because elliot cared so i wasnt devastated or anything
Sam has talked on a podcast called The Watch about the decisions he made here. He basically admitted he wrote himself into a corner with Angela’s storyline. I agree this was a weird creative choice to kill her so suddenly, even having seen the whole series.
I realize you’re ending Mr Robot and i know you’re currently watching The Last of Us. I would like to recommend two shows, one that just finished, called The Peaky Blinders, and one from the early 2000’s called The Wire. These are absolutely great in every category. From the writing to the acting, these two shows will take you through the gamut of emotions and do it with such realism, it’ll make you forget they’re just tv shows. I love your channel. Keep it up!!
Why would the end of the episode make more sense than her dying in the first? I hate to say this but the shock factor was exactly the point. Also logistically speaking if you think tje actress wanted out, it doesnt make a difference in which moment of the episode she dies
The actress didn't want out. The sudden, surreal feeling that surrounds her death is the point. Same as Tyrell's wife. It was all planned since the beginning. It makes her death real, and makes you feel Philip's uncharacteristic anger and breakdown. And much like, say, killing John Wick's puppy, you're not meant to have time to mourn. You need to compartmentalize like Elliot does.
Portia wasn't at the Season 4 premiere. She had a thing going with Rami and then Rami met his co-star in Bohemian Rhapsody and they started a relationship, so Portia couldn't work with him anymore.
well we the people that watched it live... we also had the fear that what if it gets canceled because 'reasons' like a lot of good shows have been canceled.
Pls make hunterxhunter reaction videos I love them not bcs I didn't watch it but I really like other people's especially my liked ones reaction. I believe there is not only me who want it but everyone
Angela's exit was weird man. Like, last season Angela was already on whiterose's side, though a little nuts she was fully on board, cult style. Why did Price turn her against whiterose if the intention was for Angela to stay loyal to whiterose? It was just so sudden. It really feels like the actress asked to be written out.
Because Price didn't want her to become a cult fanatic, but rather move on and live a normal life. Didn't you see what state she was in during the last episodes?
@@marodonthemorone Yeah. But S4 happened and gave the scene a complete new meaning, that's my point. He had a wire the whole time with whiterose's ear on the other end, and dark-army dudes at the house ready to blast her head the moment she said anything wrong. It's no longer about Price being worried over Ange being deep into the koolaid (though I'm sure he was). This whole thing was about her being a loose end to whiterose, set by whiterose. I'm not saying it can't make sense. But It feels sloppy though, and makes sense why. I've checked online and turns out the actress did confirm she just couldn't do s4 and Sam had to work around that. It's a retcon. I get it, because when actors want to leave or can't be for whatever that's that, no one's fault, but it sucks for the character nonetheless. Angela aint no Mobley and Trenton, or a Guideon. She's been part of the main cast since day one, with her own storyline central to the main Plot, and took on front stage throughout s3. She deserved better than a retconned 2 minute death scene.
@@blasphemous9693 my understanding is that Price works for Whiterose, and he already knows what they did to her, so the idea was to make a deal and try to convince Angela to stop fighting and let it go. But that could put Whiterose plans in danger again. I get what you're saying, but the scene in season 3 doesn't feel finished as well. Even though it feels anticlimactic and not what we used to see in shows when main character dies - it's not like they just forgot about her, her death drives the whole season.
@@marodonthemorone That last point, yeah that's true. I don't actually believe her character was ruined, just suffered and left unfinished and that really annoys me. And that scene, the flow between both seasons. Completely takes me out of the show when all I can see are the writters shifting gears.

Peak fiction, here we go !
Sam Esmail, the producer of Mr Robot is the person who injects the product in Eliott's arm
The guy that says "goodbye friend" is Sam Esmail
Such a devastating intro 😭 our poor baby girl Angela. She deserved so much better. But this is the way of life. We don’t always get what we deserve. Seeing her finally come to terms and accept the reality of her actions was so cathartic. But then her desire for revenge that Price tried to shut down so that White Rose wouldn’t kill her.. on the one hand I agree with price, he just needed more time and he might’ve been able to convince her. But I think White Rose knew better than to underestimate her. White Rose knew that she’s capable of more than most people think she is and that her desire for revenge wouldn’t be able to be brushed aside and simply forgotten
A shame that Portia Doubleday won’t be acting anymore but I’m glad she’s pursuing what makes her happy! She was a welcome addition to this show and played her character excellently.
Gone but not forgotten ❤ thanks for the memories
What ia she doing now? Why did she stop?
the seasson is really dark, but when it gives it is magical, there is episodes that i was almost crying of happiness in the end
angela's story always breaks my heart and this entire season makes me cry so much 💔💔💔
Watching it with you girls, i realized that Sam Esmail did a cameo on this episode lol (The guy that says Goodbye friend).
33:07 if you pause in the right frame, you can see the picture that Whiterose sent Elliot.
It always made me sad that the last time Elliot and Angela spoke to each other was an argument
lmao I dont think the actress wanted out. Her death was actually nicely done because you dont expect it, and it impacts Elliot`s development as well.
If they always just put characters death at the end of episodes like you want, then its never gonna surprise anyone.
and price development
From some interviews, the actress Portia Doubleday said that it was her decision to leave the show earlier than expected.
Contract dispute
@@carsonwentz8301 nah she was dating Rami, he cheated on her during the Freddy Mercury bio pic filming
@@KirbyTheKirby thanks for the DL. The writers were put in a tough spot
I watched the whole series with them, but I didn't really like their reaction.
this season is truly a masterpiece
Just L&M when they cannot predict an important event for once
Angela is gone but certainly not forgotten by the show, don't worry
[potential hint for future episode]
Milena big brained in the discussion.
Angela`s dead was planned from the beginning as everything else, at it sets up what follows. The actress didn't want out, it is part of the story.
Unfortunately she never lives to see it.
who else is waiting for the 4x5?
4x7
@@kdizzle901 They just watched 407 today 😵
cant wait for last episode to cry again. such a good finale
Yes, poignant is a word and you used it correctly. Pronounced poin-yent, though
HOMELAND!!!! If you want a new show! Do Homeland. It's amazing! and no one has reacted to that yet and it's just as good.
What a season premiere... What a rollercoaster
Woo season 4 is here! Gonna be a wild ride!
And so it begins.
Sam has talked on a podcast called The Watch about the decisions he made here. He basically admitted he wrote himself into a corner with Angela’s storyline. I agree this was a weird creative choice to kill her so suddenly, even having seen the whole series.
For me, Angela's ending is the reason I don't put this show with Breaking Bad, The Wire, etc
this death sets up the darkness of this seasson, your description in the end is pretty much on point "she died as she was just a collateral"
You might know this by now (or maybe not, idk) But S4 has 13 episodes, not 10!
When are we getting a S2 reaction of shadow and bone ? 👏
Why would the end of the episode make more sense than her dying in the first? I hate to say this but the shock factor was exactly the point. Also logistically speaking if you think tje actress wanted out, it doesnt make a difference in which moment of the episode she dies
Time for the last season. And oh what a ride it is. Let’s go 😎
16:03 u r welcome
They could have done it at the end of season 3. But in the first episode of season 4 is better in my opinion.
More surprising and non conventional.
emmy rossum's random pop up is really funny. also the creator's.
Are you guys reacting to shadow and bone again :)?
Its time. Nobody is safe!
lmao "did the actress want out?" is a unique sort of copium.
it's just Mr Robot things, no biggie
Where is the next episode, it's been nearly a week?
You say you didn't get closure, that's the point. It comes later.
You won't be in single digits yet, the final season has 13 episodes instead of 10.
This was the most frustrating episode of Mr Robot for me, together with 3x7 (the Mobley and Trenton one)
12:58 oh she gonna
You should see shadow and bones season 2
Lola, you weren't crying because it was so realistic and not "built"
Why you don’t you watch shadow and bones season 2
well we the people that watched it live... we also had the fear that what if it gets canceled because 'reasons' like a lot of good shows have been canceled.
will you react to Berserk 1997?
Pls make hunterxhunter reaction videos I love them not bcs I didn't watch it but I really like other people's especially my liked ones reaction. I believe there is not only me who want it but everyone
Time travel
Angela's exit was weird man. Like, last season Angela was already on whiterose's side, though a little nuts she was fully on board, cult style. Why did Price turn her against whiterose if the intention was for Angela to stay loyal to whiterose?
It was just so sudden. It really feels like the actress asked to be written out.
Because Price didn't want her to become a cult fanatic, but rather move on and live a normal life. Didn't you see what state she was in during the last episodes?
From some interviews, the actress said that it was her decision to leave the show earlier than expected.
Watch shadow and bones season 2
You two are always in denial when shit doesnt play out the way you expect and want it to with a character you love. Doesnt mean it wasnt intented that way
After this watch and react on Dark its matserpiece and mindfucking!
These girls already knew Angela was gonna die in these episode, they just acting smart as if they know nothing.
i know this is old but - there’s a lot of comments like this w other shows they react to - after years of periodically watching them - they are pretty sketchy when it comes to guessing what happens in shows
part of me sometimes thinks they’re rewatching old shows where they just forgot about them for a long time, definitely plausible
