I think both sounded amazing in their own ways! The first one is very familiar so I can see why a lot of people in the comments would choose that. I think it’s pretty awesome how in the second one he went the opposite direction of the song. Producing on the “off beat” and doing things completely different. He was truly challenging the listener to NOT *get comfortable.* 😂🔥 loved both!
this is SO cute. Makes me smile to see the respect for each producer’s craft. I love the humility and creativity to conquer the same problem with different ability levels.
PRO was full of instruments but also might have been too much variety (throwing everything into the mix, the slapping bass, horns, it's like a Roland new synth demo) Amateur sounded more focused and unified, and with simplicity. You know it's good when you can't take any parts away.
Amateur producer? His version sounds pro to me. Also, the project looks pro as well. I would say you are both on a similar (high) level. I guess the only difference could be that Nathan earns money with his music while (probably) Phil doesn't yet (that's at least the only valid reason for the title of this video)
As I mentioned after his song - if I didn't know Phil was an amateur I wouldn't be thinking "this is an amateur" - I've listened to his music when he started my program and what he did in this video compared to the beginning is night and day difference.
@@linusa.3231 You can also say some one is Amateur vs who ever. For exaple to some one who's literally just started making beats and knows nothing then I'd be the pro and they would be the amateur. But Me VS Doctor Dre then obviously I am going to be the amateur vs him as the pro.
@@HOLLASOUNDS Yeah that's an obvious interpretation, but i was pointing it out in the specific context of her saying the only diffference is that Nathan earns money by making music.
I think Phil’s version is something you could listen to on the radio or jamming at home around the pool while Nathan’s was more for like a super bowl performance or live concert type, both were great, did like Phil’s more though lol
The amateur one was definitely creative and it sounds like a bop. The pro one sounds unique and it’s like thinking out of the box. Both of them did really well 💯
Both incredible! For me, Phil’s version edged it. The pro version was perhaps a little over produced and took away from the lyrics. Both fantastic though
I liked both versions and could hear the high production value of each. My final vote is I like Phil’s “amateur” version. It was clean and approachable! Great job Phil! 👏🏾
Phil got my vote, his take felt more natural while Nathan's felt like too much was jammed in although Nathan's extra processing of the vocal with reverb sounded more pro.
I gotta say, I believe I like Phillip's version the most. Both sounded great though. I do dig the more detailed layering Nathan did, but I felt that Phil's stayed more true to the vocal's emotional tone. I might be a little biased because I'm a big rock/metal fan, but I usually prefer less elements in songs. Too many different sounds can sometimes muddy the waters for me in my listening experience.
I feel Phillip killed it. Although there's simplicity to it, it has a back and forth fight that keeps it balanced. It's melodic and grasping tones gives it that touch after hearing the kick coming at you. Solid
I love Philip version! But some instruments sound kinda "amateur synths". So he just need to get better plug-ins and he's ready to be officially Pro. Congrats Phillip! Obviously Nathan version sounds perfect but my vote goes for Philip, because of his creativity: gave more emotional aspects to the song.
It doesn’t matter what plug-ins you use, it’s how you use them. Sure, some plugins work better than others in certain situations, but what makes a great producer is being able to make a great song no matter what.
Acc it doesn’t matter about plug-ins I’ve seen producers use stock plugins with one sample kick drum to create a whole track & it sounds better than most 😂
Man I think what REALLY set it off for me his how Phil set the "hey ho ya yea yea yea" man it gave my chills. But these vox are amazing. the acapella already had me. But Nathan, the way you walked through the notes on that part with the keys (AND the reverb and EQ on those keys were so on point. I'm using that as references for one of my tracks today) SICK as fuck. I'd love the opportunity to do something like this.
This was sick! I liked both versions, Nathan’s had more sonic variety which was impressive especially on the transitions. Phil’s vibe felt closer to me to what the track needed. Great job to both of you!
This is what I love about making music, you can lose control and make it your own. Also to collaborate with like minded people who hype you up and give advice and not down you for anything. Loving both versions. Great job guys!!!
I love your different takes on this, I definitely would have turned this into a Dua Lipa-ish disco beat, I like that Nathan used some funky bass in the chorus :)
Dua Lipa or rather her Music producer's (because she don't actully make music she just sings) littrelly rip off all the most popular music from 90s artist like Jamiroquai and the drums in her tracks are generic and she use the same 4 cords like almost all other pop stars.
@@HOLLASOUNDS not every pop song uses the same chords. It’s just the ones that do use them blow up cause those chords are the easiest and most “complete” sounding chords.
@@Jcjenxnc No that's got nothing to do with it. The reason they use the same cord progression, or song structure or sound is to create a sence of familiarity in the listeners head making them more likely to like the new song and not really know why. The other reason is that why bother comming up with new ideas when they can just copy somthing that's already been done. The songs could be absolute trash but enough money thrown at public influencers and adds will make it a hit anyway hence why anyone who knows music knows that most pop music is generic crap. The days where pop stars actually made great original music died around the same time as Freddy Mercurys death.
@@HOLLASOUNDS that’s a very closed minded way of thinking. Try listening to more artists for longer than just a few seconds and you might find that you like some more of the newer artists
The professional was to busy for my liking however I did like the horn arrangement and slap bass guitar 🎸 the amateur producer I felt put the most natural vibe in the song and felt like a radio ready tune 👌
@Frenzied Unicorn ProductionsUhh, the point was that more basic people and basic musicians wants to take a more basic approach, the approach the amateur took was what I feel most amateurish producers would go for, on the contrary the pro specifically said from the beginning he wants to take this song a weird way you wouldn’t expect and he did that with a very unique take. Most amateur producers don’t have unique takes as they are still attempting to get their songs sounding good in a normal way, this goes for all art, you can look at a Picasso and say it looks like a bunch of scribbles and you can look at an amateurs drawing of a realistic cat and you can say you like that cat more than the Picasso, but that doesn’t mean the amateur is a better artist, the professional knows is just on a different level of doing things. Lastly about jazz musicians, jazz musicians are often the most skilled of any musicians so maybe you have a bad example? It’s actually a similar thing, many people don’t like jazz music because they feel there is too much going on but jazz musicians such as jazz guitarist are often times much much better guitarists than every other genre of music, they know chords and timing and have the mind to play through scales in a way that most guitarists could ever dream.
Phillip killed the this with his drums and the ending was epic, and Nate had the bass line and them horns seriously someone should have them do a colab and mix both songs and it would sound epic!
Both where Dope BUT I feel Phil's version would be more of an artist friendly as the 2nd version was all about the beat rather than the song. That funk disco was fire on Nathans version for sure though. Both tracks are inspiring! Nice video!!
Phil, my dude. When i saw u listening to the audio vocals. I was like okay, this mans prob gonna get real technical. You did not fail to deliver. I like the sound and style you ran with. Today you got yourself +1 fan.
This was absolutely incredible. You need to keep doing these dual videos. It is so cool to see the creativity that is involved on a such a digital level, and to see how granular you get within Logic Pro X. This is very inspiring! Keep at it bro!!
Both version were incredible, i think the pro version catered more to a tv show theme song while the Amateur version sounded more like a song on the radio, that dominant 7th chord did it for me it carries this dubstep/pop feel to it..plus vocal arrangement. great video you both did awesome
I agree with Philip. Love the half steps, love the stutter of Nathan’s version. Philip’s choice of getting a choir in there gave me chills. So good. Loved both versions on this.
Gotta say I enjoyed the dynamic variety in Nathan's. The production was awesome (if not a touch over the top at the end, still fun though). I really enjoyed Phil's too!
I can't pick a winner.... the winner here is anyone who takes the time to study these two different approaches. Nice work, Phil and NJL. Very instructive.
I love the "losing control" darker feel of Phil's track. Nathan's was mixed better in my opinion and had a lot of the little nuances that set him apart as the more experiences producer but I love Phil's idea from the minor 7th to the adding of the bridge choir (so dope). I'm team Phil on this one but I have mad respect for both of you! And what a great idea, taking the same vocal track and produce two different records. Love it!
Really great job to both of you. Would have never guessed Phil is a noob! Actually preferred the downbeat on this one, as it just felt smoother than the upbeat. REALLY dug the pitch and formant-shifted harmonies on Phil's, too. Loved the funky bass add on yours, Nathan - just wish there was a bit more of it! (i have a think for funky basslines). Great mixing on both and enjoyed em!!! DEFINITELY continue doing these vs series!!
Man, I loved them both for different reasons. I absolutely love syncopated rhythms which both of them had. Please do more of these “competitions”, and maybe expand it to several people and then let the viewers judge for a winner. It is so fun to see how people interpret and feel music differently but yet retain the core. Outstanding!!
Phil - effective composition/songwriting, slightly hollow production Nathan - flamboyant production, experimental composition that doesn't always translate to bops
They were both totally awesome the simplicity of the first 1 give a soulful bop and the second made me wanna start a revolution ❤ truly great work by both humans.
I like both, but Nathan's rhythmic offsetting (syncopated) and chromatic harmonic descents captures the lyrical content more accurately ("Don't get comfortable" y'all) :)
Nathan, why can't we invite everyone to the party. Release a vocal track and let everyone send in their production for the same vocal. all 7 continents bro. bring us on a challenge buddy. well done
Nate kept it simple so was more likely to just sit better in the listeners ears. You do realise that most pop songs used the exact same drums and key as each other.
Nice work but the “ amateur “ has a better taste and imagine he doesn’t know all the hacks and tricks in the daw 😂. He inspired himself with some timbo tracks with the groove of the drums
I'm just glad he (The Amateur) didn't add a dam trap style 808 like every other beat made these days, however I would of put in a sub base under that base he used as it's not very deep.
@Frenzied Unicorn Productions Yes and I think it can either hinder or help producers who don't use that 808 All the time. I experiment with bass sometimes not really getting it bass enough I go for the sound and then later put a bass under it. Some beats sound good with a booming deep bass but others it just overpowers the rest of what's in the beat like strings.
@@producerhat luckily it's very easily done, all he has to do is find a basic deep bass and put that along with the current bass. I'd just make a new line and copy paste the bars from the current bass. Would take about 2 seconds.
I think Nathan, you had great production. I loved the fact that you used a dance beat, wish you would have stuck with 4 on the floor throughout, the breaks with the "hey, ho" kinda made the beat a little hard to feel the groove through. Great job. I am going to have to say that I liked Phil's better, the vocal sat a little better on the 1. Both did a great job
Phil has my vote they are both amazing but the simplicity and creativity in Phil’s version was so amazing and just had me intrigued. The other one had a lot going on and it was hard to enjoy the vocals because I was trying so hard to grasp all the instrumental effects and awesomeness hahah. But overall amazing from the both of you.
They both did great on the build up, I like the funky bass line, and audio distortion in both. But that funky bass and horns did it for me. On the other hand the breakdown and third verse that Phil did was so good that I have to give it to Phil, that was so creative and to do it from scratch. That was so cool. Great job to both but The extra has to be the winner. 🏆 Phil
As much as I love fast music, Phil's choir extra just changed the game. I'd just love to take that part with the bridge, up the tempo and add it to the Pro's! Please are these tracks available for public listening?
Phillip's has the Verses and bridge. And Nathan's has the Chorus. Put them together and it's a great bop. My vote goes to Nathan because it fealt like there was more pieces of the song that made it sound original, however not by a stretch. Obviously Phillip has got some skills 😉
The Amateur really Sounds Pro to me except that his Chorus wasn't big enough ( larger than life chorus) so the excitement expected in it was cut short. Every other thing is highly engaging.
Philip anit no Amateur. The way he did that track was strictly on a Professional level.Phil you have a Professional ear dude.Im a trained Musician ,but arranging a track from scratch with just a vocal is hard. You out did yourself.
Hey Nathan putting yourself in the firing line of Forest, you deserve the Purple Heart. I loved your version as well BUT you challenged a battle ship against a rowing boat. Brilliant concept. We need more of these
I enjoyed the amateur version. Felt more focused and heartfelt til the end. The pro version sounded like I listened to 5 versions in one almost like a commercial ad more than a track. Which wasnt tasteful for the ear due to sudden transitions and saturated effects. Well good job to both of you. Unbiased opinion. #audiophile
Absolutely great on both sides!!! Only thing I would have done different on the whole video production is adding a section at the end where you guys both talked in the same scene, comparing songs and critiquing and congratulating each other. Other than that, you guys were a great inspiration.Thank you.
Damn, I really appreciate the equipment/software listing. I think that's the hardest info to come by is determining what makes a decent audio workstation cause there's just so much out there. Kudos!
I think both the tracks have something great in it. Blend of some of the contents from both of these tracks will create a really cool arrangement. I loved this stuff. It's rare to find such videos on RUclips. Thanks bro!
The amateur remix is nicer , only lacked groove , he just needed to add some shuffling hats or those rolling 808 hats they use in trap , its a quicker way of making a stiffer groove more open & progressive. The pro beat was not bad either but too much going on & not cohesive enough , the timing felt off , groove also wasn't that great, mixing also needes work , maybe this is caused by all the layering & harmonizing. I feel like pro would have done a better job if this wasn't a competition.
Na I'm fed up of hearing the same dam 808 used in Trap in littrelly every dam production these days. Yes some things are probabaly gona be off as this is littrelly a first take probabaly given a time limets. The final mix and then mastering is not something shown in most beat maker producer videos.
Both these mixes are excellent. So many great elements and unique arrangements, voicings and effects. Not calling any favorites - loved both concepts and ideas. Well done!
Amazing both of you..Horns did it for me though ..loved the feel on both the arrangements.. great video. You should do more like these. Thanks for doing this :)

@@producerhat luckily it's very easily done, all he has to do is find a basic deep bass and put that along with the current bass. I'd just make a new line and copy paste the bars from the current bass. Would take about 2 seconds.
Oh dang so hard to pick a winner 🏆 🥇 both was amazingly great 👍 good job 👏
I think Nathan, you had great production. I loved the fact that you used a dance beat, wish you would have stuck with 4 on the floor throughout, the breaks with the "hey, ho" kinda made the beat a little hard to feel the groove through. Great job.
I am going to have to say that I liked Phil's better, the vocal sat a little better on the 1.
Both did a great job
I choose the first One, was really dope. Congrats both for this amazing work
Phil has my vote they are both amazing but the simplicity and creativity in Phil’s version was so amazing and just had me intrigued. The other one had a lot going on and it was hard to enjoy the vocals because I was trying so hard to grasp all the instrumental effects and awesomeness hahah. But overall amazing from the both of you.
I loved phil's version, it was just amazing!!
🏆 Phil
Yo, Phillip. Absolute legend🙌
Thanks!!
As much as I love fast music, Phil's choir extra just changed the game. I'd just love to take that part with the bridge, up the tempo and add it to the Pro's!
Please are these tracks available for public listening?
You can tell you really like the first one. It made you dance. It was dope.. they both were actually 💫💫
Phillip's has the Verses and bridge. And Nathan's has the Chorus. Put them together and it's a great bop. My vote goes to Nathan because it fealt like there was more pieces of the song that made it sound original, however not by a stretch. Obviously Phillip has got some skills 😉
I would definetly add the amateur version to my Playlist. Well done, Phil.
The Amateur really Sounds Pro to me except that his Chorus wasn't big enough ( larger than life chorus) so the excitement expected in it was cut short. Every other thing is highly engaging.
I’m impressed by both of these, this was very fun to watch
Philip anit no Amateur. The way he did that track was strictly on a Professional level.Phil you have a Professional ear dude.Im a trained Musician ,but arranging a track from scratch with just a vocal is hard. You out did yourself.
Both of you....just WOW! I can't say I have a favorite. So nice to see two incredible artists in action ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nathan’s definitely hits harder but I do love Phil’s rhythm.
Nathan, I love your vibe.
Your way of thinking is unique
👍👍👍👍
Remember that Noah's ark was built by amateurs, Titanic was built by professionals
Since Noah's ark wasn't real that's a pretty weird example 🤣🤣
@@kevinschmidt7124 hahahaha word man, word! Thank you for your videos
@@kevinschmidt7124 it is tho??
@@eetthhnn3160 There is legitimate evidence approved by multiple global scientists that it indeed was real.
Noahs ark creation would of (If you belive) have been guided and helped by God.
Hey Nathan putting yourself in the firing line of Forest, you deserve the Purple Heart. I loved your version as well BUT you challenged a battle ship against a rowing boat. Brilliant concept. We need more of these
You guys are amazing ,still so under appreciated ,without a good producer any artist in the world is trash .
beautiful how they love music and just the love for good vibes comes out without calculations
#audiophile
That was great!! So much creativity in both! Very enjoyable to watch. And educational as well actually!
Phillip Mills is A Air Force Officer Respect+ Sir
Absolutely great on both sides!!! Only thing I would have done different on the whole video production is adding a section at the end where you guys both talked in the same scene, comparing songs and critiquing and congratulating each other. Other than that, you guys were a great inspiration.Thank you.
Both works are awesome but I have to say I really like the amateur version the most...
Damn, I really appreciate the equipment/software listing. I think that's the hardest info to come by is determining what makes a decent audio workstation cause there's just so much out there. Kudos!
That... was... AWESOME!!!!!
Both versions are amazing!!!!!!
Can't believe that Phil is an amateur, thats class A studio quality
Absolutely agree
I think both the tracks have something great in it. Blend of some of the contents from both of these tracks will create a really cool arrangement.
I loved this stuff. It's rare to find such videos on RUclips. Thanks bro!
Phil's production is technically and musically WAY better than Nathans. So far to "Pro vs. Amateur" lol.
Both sounds Dope. I love the dark vibes that Phil made! It still depends on the listener’s music taste.
Well done!
I know right I couldn’t choose either. I think on an album one could be like a remix or something 😂
This is such a sick vid
Ayooo Alex Rome in the house
Amazing both of you..Horns did it for me though ..loved the feel on both the arrangements.. great video. You should do more like these. Thanks for doing this :)
If HE'S an AMATEUR, then what am I? 💀💀💀💀💀
Beginner?
@@rainynights531 I mean does producing for a year and 2 months still put me in the beginner category? I'm just asking tho. my beats aren't that good but I've made a obvious significant improvement from my very first beat
@@mind_of_dro yeah. Amateur.. that guy was good and to be honest his music feels very semi pro or pro if you want. So yeah. Amateur it is.
Very nice variations of that material. Like both versions with their surprises!

They were so well made! Top shit!! Love them both!!
Both sounded great. This is really fun to listen to. Could we see Phil vs Dexter? This could be an Amazon or Netflix show.
The first producer aint an amture bro… like he felt the vibe real quickkkk! Good job!!
I like what philip did.. doesnt hurt my ears.. i can chil withl this all day
