i can't use it with google maps navigation. i only see this created route map and that's it. i want that google maps on my phone to guide me like I choose from point a to B
Hello Jim, thanks for the explanation and it is great. Would you do a video showing how to share what we create in my Google My Map direction layer route so that we share it with people so they can navigate? Is it possible?
Hi Jim and thank you for this video. Is it possible to let My Map come up with a suggested route based on my Route options like "avoid highways, Zoll", and so on?
Hello Jim, great video, very simple yet very clear. Is there a way I can follow on Google Maps app the route I created on My Maps (like it's possible to do when we import the route to the satnav)? I've been looking everywhere but couldn't find such thing, don't know if that's even possible. The best I could do is: 1- Open Google Maps app 2- Go to Saved 3- Click on Maps 4- Select the Map At this point I see the route but I can't start the navigation on the route. The closest thing I can do is to select a waypoint of the route and hit Directions button, which calculates a route to that single waypoint, but by default if doesn't assume the route I designed if Google finds quicker/more efficient routes.
Just like to say how very helpful you have been, to show me how to make and save a route on my maps. So nice to see it in action has you explained every step. Would you know if this can be transferred to a Garmin Zuni XT.
A good way I have found to navigate using your saved "My Maps" is to convert your MY Maps to KML files. Then you will need to learn to use Gaia GPS. The free version is all you will need. Watch RUclips videos to learn the basics of Gaia GPS. You will import your My Maps as KML files into the web based Gaia GPS software. Upload each map into it's own folder which will identify your map locatons. Also download the app for your phone which will sync with your web input. You can import the same KML file to your phone first if you want which will also sync with the web. When you are ready to navigate to a My Map location on your phone just find it in Gaia GPS and select Driving Directions. Gaia GPS will open Google Maps and be ready to navigate. Once you have the app on your phone it will integrate with Android Auto and Carplay. Enjoy.
Thanks for the research and workaround suggestion. I am having issues with this however, when I select Driving Directions it gives me directions from my current position to the starting point, not from the start of the My Map location. Do I need to be at the start of the My Map location for the My Map Driving Directions to work? How do I get the Driving Directions to only work for that saved My Map?
@@dannypolicarpo Danny, I'm not to certain what you were trying to describe. Each of the My Maps locations is a driving destination with you leaving from your current location.
@@JimChagares Maybe I misunderstood your workaround, I thought this was a way of giving turn-by-turn navigation for custom Google My Maps but maybe it's not?
@@dannypolicarpo When you select your saved destination in Gaia GPS and choose Driving Direction , Google Maps will open and takes over the driving direction to your selected waypoint.
@@JimChagares Yes but only to the start of the My Map location, it doesn't give you driving directions or turn-by-turn navigation for the entire custom My Map which is what I thought your work around was enabling.
Great tutorial Jim, thank you for sharing it, well done! 1 question pls. once you save your map, how can you use it or open it on your mobile phone, for example? Thanks again! 👍👍
Thank you for a great tutorial. My problem occurs the moment I try to import from the saved folder back into my maps to change colours. It will not import. I get "Error Occurred". 😢 Tried to change to kml but same error. Stuck.
Excellent Video. May I ask, how can you stop recipients of shared maps changing the map by accident? I'd also like to lock a map to prevent Google maps changing a route if I change a point. Thanks
Thank you and very informative. I hope your friend Brian has learned how to do this now too. So i got the link and now can print it on a A3 for on the bike so my missus on the back can tell me left and right like the olden days? You got over 10.000 views for the tutorial why cant you answer the questions ask below
Thank you - can you please explain how to go the next step - Navigating in the car with the map. Either the original - preferred as I could modify it - or the colored one. I want to create multiple day maps (layers I guess), then travel them.
Did you find a solution? I now understand how to plan a route and I can see the route on my phone in Google maps, however the directions don't want to follow the route. It reverts back to 'most direct'
The next step can’t be done in google maps. Unfortunately I’ve been trying to figure this out. Google maps doesn’t let you route with turn by turn on your custom built map. Somehow you must download kml and read it on another program
@@jbmorrow5390 Yeah. For some reason you can't take advantage of Google's wonderful turn by turn navigation while also customizing a route in their own app! I spent a ton of time customizing a route in MyMaps on google and can't navigate the route. A solution could be to somehow export and use an app like basecamp to convert the file and read it with a dedicated GPS device
Ah, so you're telling your friend Brian about places Eatery and House. Very informative; not. Why would we not put place-names beside our markers in the locations where they are? Why look across to a legend every time I want to know what it is? Isn't this fairly fundamental? I'm perplexed. But thanks. PS Keep your voice up so we can hear it all. PPS Viewers: inside the gear-wheel symbol that you see when you pass your mouse over the display area there's a speed control. I like Custom 1.15.

I LOVED the coloring of the parts of the route!!! I had no idea you could do that -- VERY useful!!

Nice video but no one ever shows how to navigate with a saved "My Map."
Because it is not possible for now. If you found a way please share it with us

A really good Start, but love to know how one can add 30/40 or more Locations ………
Thnx
There’s an “add destination” after creating the first point a to point b
What?! [Cupping hand to ear...] Unfortunately my volume knob doesn't go to 11. :o(
