As of 2024, I am using the Travel Mapper extension to customize my maps even easier. See video tutorial here!: ruclips.net/video/siPq-8zRRik/видео.htmlsi=wtycH2Cf8CXr880H
Thank you for putting this together. My primary goal has been to create a map on my desktop that lets me do a detailed route plan across country. It seemed like My Maps was the best tool for this expect that when I pushed the saved map to my phone, as you point out, it would not provide directions. I have no clue why the genius crew at Google would leave out such an obvious feature. I was really frustrated when I kept pushing a saved map to my phone (android) but could not get directions. Your video is the first place I've found (after a lot of looking) that confirms I was not making some error. I agree that My Maps has a lot of cool features but I think for someone who just wants to plan a route using Google maps, the best way to do this is to plan the route on your desktop with just the Google map. There does not appear to be any way to save this but you can save the location so that it is easy to rebuild. Then send the link for the map to your phone, open this and then save it to your desktop. This will provide a saved map with end to end directions and distance between each stop on the map. Again, I'll state that it seems crazy, sad, stupid, etc... that Google does not provide a turn by turn capability when you move a saved map to your phone. But thanks again for the workaround.
Thanks so much. I've been using this for years but struggling every time. I'm making a 5000 mile road trip next week and now I'm dialed in thanks to you! You Rock!
LOVE: The way you move your graphics Including your family trips/why you like to do this The efficiency that you show the steps with -Stumbling on to this website came at a really great time for me...THANK YOU for all your time/effort that took to make this such a great tutorial
Thanks for the video. I'm planning a 10 day trip from Alabama to Niagara Falls and this helped me understand how to plan it out in My Maps. As a side note, my father was an over the road truck driver and I went with him many times as a kid. Needless to say the Rand McNally Atlas was in my lap a lot. I still keep an updated one in the car because I like to look at maps in that format.
I had no idea this version of maps even existed lol. This was so helpful because I've never planned a road trip before and it seemed so daunting until I watched this so thank you!
I'm planning a motorbike trip and constantly get frustrated with Garmin, Tom Tom etc inability to be flexible in route planning. In my opinion Google Maps is great and now I have learned to plan routes in advance. Thanks for the tutorial, it was simple to understand and delivered at the right pace for me to work on a different tab 'alongside' you. My only tip would be to recommend to users travelling abroad to download that section of Google Maps to be able to use it offline. This overcomes any network issues or roaming charges.....Thank you :)
You're welcome. Offline maps works so well in the more remote areas where there may be no GPS signal. Simply tap on your Google pic (top right) while in Map app on phone. Then click 'Offline Maps', followed by 'Select your own map'....very easy to do and can save you a heap of cash/data
Wow, that was an EXCELLENT summary of how to use this program. I had no idea what the layers meant. Currently planning a trip on Southwest US and this gives me a big head start.
Thank you so much. I am working on a school project with my daughter and this is exactly what I needed. It also helps my cabin fever as I look forward to better days.
Thanks! Glad you found it helpful! It also helps with my cabin fever. Just planning a vacation brightens my mood - even though the travel dates are all still TBD. :)
Another great video! I've used my maps to attempt to plan trips before, but didn't fully understand how to use it. Just mapped out my road trip for next week with the help of your walk through. Thank you tons!
Great video. I went through over half a dozen videos to find one that was easy to use and understandable. Yours was just perfect in helping me plot our 10-day road trip for later this month. Thanks
I miss the old Microsoft Streets and Trips. You could schedule stops for however many days, have the software put in rest stops based on number of hours of driving, and even tell you where you would be wanting to stop for fuel based on your vehicle's mileage. It was the ultimate road trip planner.
You're absolutely right, I still keep the last version of Microsoft Streets & Trips 2013 that I use just for time management aspect of trip planning. Alas, its almost obsolete as new businesses come/go and highways get built/demolished. Hoping Google will introduce time management or efficient ordering of stops between a given start/end point. I really miss those features.
Had no idea this feature exists. I’m always dreaming of road trips through google maps so now, tks to you, I can plan better. btw we took the very trip you used as example. It was incredible scenery. Zion, unexpectedly, felt like a Spiritual connection to a time of long ago… We too look forward to returning.
I already used my maps for keeping lists and stuff, but didn't know you could route between the destinations. Exactly what I needed. Thanks for the demo!
THANK YOU!!!! I am so glad I found this tutorial. 😊😊 You did an excellent job of explaining how My Maps works. My family and I are taking a road trip from Texas to Florida (and back) next month and we are NOT seasoned travelers so any help we can get is very appreciated! ~
Hi Ashley, Awesome tutorial !! I'm planning a trip from Houston to DC in a week and have started My Map after watching this video ... No way I could've planned so much in one central platform without this tool. Thanks so much. Watched couple of your other planning videos -- they are great. Keep doing what you are doing on this Channel
Thank you! This is so helpful! We are planning a trip from Washington DC to San Fransisco in the summer and I’ve been on the look out for the best way to plan the itinerary!
This is the Best info I've come across. Thanks for sharing your knowledge😊 I can't wait to plan my trip. Looking forward to your next tutorials. Many Blessings 👌Thanks again
Ashley, thanks so much. This is just what I wanted! I think it's an excellent tutorial, at least for what I wanted to do -- just create a customized drive from my home to a destination.
I want to create driving directions on my computer to different locations, save them, then send them to my phone when I'm ready to go. You'd think this would be straight forward. The only way I've found is to click on the destination, click on View in Google Maps, reenter departing location, then send to phone. Not the most intuitive.
Thanks for the follow up. I hope Google corrects this in the near future. It seems silly that we can build everything and then can’t sync to navigational directions.
This was soooo helpful! Thanks so much for making this tutorial. I’ll need it since I live in the UK and am planning a road trip across the continental US for next year! Will certainly be using this!
At around 5:30 you commented on accidently dropping a pin in the wrong layer. I had this same issue until I realized that the layer you're currently working in has a thin blue vertical line next to it when it's active. I hope they change it in the future to something that stands out a bit better.
Thanks for an excellently informative video (it's a shame you weren't my teatcher in school, I could listen to your voice all day long). Thanks for the walkthrough. I'm planning on seeing the Scottish Highlands as soon as covid is gone.
12:56 How do you start navigating with a saved map? When I select a saved map on my iPhone is just shows the map but there's no way to start navigating.
I don’t recall the song name - apologies… this was edited a few years back - but I have a subscription to MusicBed. That’s where I get almost all of the music featured in my videos.
Thanks! Great info! I have been using my maps to generate a route and importing into Garmin Basecamp so I can load it on my motorcycle GPS. I try to use gravel roads as much as possible so its nice to be able to drag that line and change the route. Cheers from Montana!
Thanks for watching, John! I’m glad you found the video helpful. You’ve also taught me something! I didn’t know these maps could be imported into Garmin. That’s very cool!
hi, i have a problem here. Ok, in min 12:47 you made you route but how can i use "maps APP in cellphone" to follow this entire route from point A to E through points B,C and D? Thanks
Thanks! To be honest, I do a lot of research on RUclips. I type in the destination that I am going to and look for videos on "top 10 things to see." That gives me a decent starting point. I also search the location in Instagram and write down spots that look fun or interesting. Most places have tourism websites, so I browse those as well. I figure out what are the "must not miss" sights in a certain area, but I also leave a ton of room open to be spontaneous when traveling. I love to ask locals for recommendations and often have the best experiences from that!
I had no idea this feature existed! Thanks for a great tutorial. I do wish there was an option for trains in the Transportation mode selections. There's only cars, bikes, and walking. Not helpful planning for Europe.
Thanks for sharing. I was not aware that Google has this feature. I was using App which is more difficult when there are too much information to manage,.
Does anyone know how to then transfer it to your phone to navigate with? I can plan the routes on my Mac and see them as well on my iPhone but it will not navigate to the destinations in google maps. So frustrating 🤨
hi i saw that it shows a layout of the destinations but how to I make it so it speaks to me, like as I am driving. Can it tell me when to turn left or when to turn right? does my question make sense?
When I try to look at my map but I made following your instructions it doesn't give me the option start the navigation so if I click on the end of my destination it will start the navigation but it will completely ignore the route I planned any idea what I did wrong?
hello. i like this planning app but, i am planning a summer ride now, in the winter, and it will not allow me to plan through a winter closed road. any fixes? thanks

I went through five RUclips videos before I found yours which showed me how to create and SAVE my personal road trips. Great job! Thanks

I 100% agree. This video is a few years old now and I am STILL waiting for Google to add the navigation feature.
Might as well use WAZE

I should have watched this prior to our recent trip to Portugal - very helpful info!!
Beginning to understand. Thank you for this video. If can provide more content , it would be greatly appreciated
Excellant tutorial! After watching various videos, I finally understand how to use My Map by watching your video. Thanks!
At around 5:30 you commented on accidently dropping a pin in the wrong layer. I had this same issue until I realized that the layer you're currently working in has a thin blue vertical line next to it when it's active. I hope they change it in the future to something that stands out a bit better.
Wow! I never noticed that. Thanks for pointing it out. They really need to make some improvements on this program. :)
Wow, great video, everything I needed to know!
Happy to hear it! Thanks for watching.
Wonderful video, thank you! I was able to build a trip in 1 viewing.
Thanks for an excellently informative video (it's a shame you weren't my teatcher in school, I could listen to your voice all day long). Thanks for the walkthrough. I'm planning on seeing the Scottish Highlands as soon as covid is gone.
Thanks so much for the compliment and I’m glad you found the video helpful! The Scottish Highlands are also high on my list. Hope you get to go soon!
12:56 How do you start navigating with a saved map? When I select a saved map on my iPhone is just shows the map but there's no way to start navigating.
I have exactly same problem. I have to pick up clients from multiple places and this would be so useful.
I am looking forward to trying this out.
Thanks for the info. I am doing a road trip and had no idea what app to help with the mapping
So incredibly helpful. Thank you so much!
Wow this is the best feature that people don't know
Amazing
Great tutorial. Will really help me on my planned USA road trip this year. What is your background music. It's really soothing!
I don’t recall the song name - apologies… this was edited a few years back - but I have a subscription to MusicBed. That’s where I get almost all of the music featured in my videos.

Thanks. I'd suggest it would be easier to follow if your cursor were larger. On a Mac it's
Apple>Preferences>Accessability>Display>Pointer.
Noted for next time! Thanks.
thank you so much that is what I really was looking for. very informative and well explained

just what I was looking for, great video thank you very much. question: can you download the map to your GPS device like Garmin for example?
I liked the way you explained it. Love from India.
Thank you and hello to India! ;)
Thanks so much, I was stuck on how to start. You're a legend.
Glad the video helped! Thanks for the comment.

But how do you view step by step directions on phone? I made a route on PC but there's no option to show step by step directions on maps app on phone!
Thanks so much for sharing this! Very useful :)

When I try to look at my map but I made following your instructions it doesn't give me the option start the navigation so if I click on the end of my destination it will start the navigation but it will completely ignore the route I planned any idea what I did wrong?
Exxcellent. Very helpful and well explained. (Larry...Colorado)
This video is AWESOME! Thank you so much!!!!
Thanks, Pauly!
Good basic tutorial with added extras. Your choice for the Base Map is a little hard to see vs the default that you started with.
Very, very helpful...thank you!
hello. i like this planning app but, i am planning a summer ride now, in the winter, and it will not allow me to plan through a winter closed road. any fixes? thanks
