Surprise Snowfall in the Smokies

  • I hiked from Lead Cove to Bote Mountain to Finely Cane this morning. The loop is approximately 7.5 miles and takes about 3.5 to 4 hours to complete. The day started with light rain and fog. It then changed to sleet and finally into snow. I saw 2 wild hogs for the first time, and also saw a large owl (which I wasn't able to capture on my GoPro, but will upload later from my phone to RUclips Shorts). It was another great hike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP).

      @@justkeepwalkin Last March we did a little half day trip over to Bryson city and on the way there there was no snow at Newfound Gap but then on the way back it was covered in snow. It was so cool to have that happen in the course of the day.

      @PaintedRavensong We've been to Bryson City a few times. On a couple of visits, Newfound Gap was closed due to weather on the way back, and we had to take the "long" way around. 😄

    I've done this loop many times, mostly in winter. It's a good one!

      Hi Rachel! I agree. This is a good one. I like trails that actually make a loop.

    • @rachelgoetze
      @rachelgoetze 20 дней назад +1

      @justkeepwalkin definitely. I like to do the longer loop sometimes too, which includes Schoolhouse-> Turkeypen-> Finley-> Bote back to schoolhouse trailhead. About 9 miles 👍

      @rachelgoetze I haven't done that one yet, but I may have to try it. Thanks!

    Another great hike my friend. I really love hiking in mild inclement weather makes for interesting events to take place some of which made me wish I either had a pillow or skis strapped to my hind quarters. Thanks for taking me along with. Hike on my friend see you on the next one.

      Thanks James! I like a little snow too while I'm hiking as long as it doesn't get too bad. I should have taken a sled so I could have made a quick return down the mountain. 😁

    I enjoyed your hike today, it was good seeing hogs in the woods. They are so destructive. Glad you got back before the weather gets to bad. I live in Ga. The weather is supposed be turn bad in a day or so. Thank you stay safe

      Thanks Dan! That was the first time I had seen wild hogs while hiking. I've heard they can be temperamental. The snow never got bad, but it is supposed to get really cold this week. Stay warm.

      Cades Cove is one of my favorite places to visit. They close it to car traffic on Wednesdays in the Summer. It's a lot less crowded and much more enjoyable on bicycles. We rented electric bikes last year and went through the Cove. It was wonderful.
