    1. Make sure to do BJU daily
    2. Combining practice test and test days into 1 day
    3. Work ahead as often as you can
    4. Work when at home on break

My high schooler LOVES BJU. He is different in how he does his. He does 5 days of work on 1 subject per day. So, Monday-Math, Tuesday is History only, etc. This has helped him. He struggled with stop-go-stop-go in subjects. I say that but this year I am making him go back to a regular format.I recommend that do what works for you kid and this worked really well because he would do the whole chapter in one day including tests and quizzes. When he did the regular format, we encouraged him to work ahead if he could because of unexpected sickness or life interruptions.

I’m so glad you mentioned doing the chapter review and tests on the same day. That made such a difference for us this past school year also!

BJU is incredible! I was hesitating to do Abeka Academy because I wasn’t crazy about the video lessons being filmed in a classroom and I myself was bored previewing them. I prayed about it and God led me to BJU through RUclips! Absolutely in love with BJU, the convenience and the level of education, is exactly what I wanted and imagined it would be.
If you’re hesitant to try this curriculum, don’t be, I doubt anyone would regret such an amazing curriculum!!!
Just be sure to get organized before starting the year so everything runs smooth❤

it blows my mind that homeschool curriculum does 180 lessons when public schools field trip days count as school days and days where the teacher calls in sick that morning about you set in the class room just reading a book counts as a day in school.

We ended up not sticking with BJU, but when we were using it, my plan was for my child to take the 3 levels of high school Spanish from BJU and spread them out over the 4 years of high school and give them 4 high school spanish credits. That way we could still do school 4 days per week.

    Great tips! 😊
I used BJU for English, Reading, Science and History from 1-3 Grade. Definitely double lessons when those are practices and tests, or Practice and reviews. Lessons that are easy we double. I do a combination of Parent Led and DLO. I also eliminate work if is not necessary extra practice or reinforcement. They offered Instructional Aids, extra Review and Write It. Make it work for your needs and family. It’s double and yes, you can pick and choose. I don’t use every rubric and I don’t do every project or experiment. This is a vast, rigorous curriculum. I love it because is solid.

We switched to BJU English (just the work text) this year and about Christmas time I realized we were going to finish so much later than I was anticipating. We also doubled up on lessons. For us it worked well to double up during grammar units and then slow down and do the lessons as assigned for writing units. It’s worked really well for us this year and everyone in our house is enjoying BJU! I could see though, how doubling up with other subjects wouldn’t be feasible. The grammar is reviewed and applied so often in BJU that it’s been successful for us. Great tips for new BJU families - I wish I had seen this video last summer, it will benefit many!

Seriously, we did BJU spanish 1 and my son couldn't complete the last 2 chapters or he would be working on it until the beginning of next year! We found a good stopping point and chose another program for spanish 2. At least they gave him a great foundation!

Life disruptions had sort of thrown us into a homeschooling scenario twice. Once for 7th grad and finishing up 9th grade. We decided to use BJU press bc it was used by our previous school, however we find that getting through all the material cover to cover on all 7 subjects is nearly impossible. We take time to go back and correct mistakes, so that additional acedemic load on top of how dense the material already is takes the entire school year and summer to finish...and were still not done with some subjects. My student is very bright, so im compelled to think that we could do well to prioritize core principles, and then round out the courses with supplemental material. However, since we're not trained curricularists, and we want the best academic rigor for our kids, we just keep on slogging away with the same grueling results...not finishing before the next year starts, and this seems like it risks you child missing fundemental building blocks for future grades or college. Doesn’t seem like a sustainable or smart trend. Any suggestions.

These are great tips! Thank you!! I have a ways to go before I hit high school years but I feel like some of these could apply to any 180 day curriculum when the time comes. Although, BJU looks very intriguing 🤓

I’ve only used BJU Spelling, reading, and English.
BJU English- don’t buy the tests the chapter review is the same layout as the test. We also don’t do the cumulative review and during the writing chapters we do the draft, revise, and proofread(which is 3 lessons) all in one day.
We school 5 days a week but Fridays are quicker and easier.

Thank you - this gives me some ideas to mull over. Now that we have state funding we can afford BJU but I was intimated by the 180 days. We have an all day co-op 28 days of the school year and then my oldest has a full fall football schedule. Right now we are only doing the Spanish course. I think I will start off by giving them the option to either do their work when we come home on Wednesdays (which is only an option for my daughter until Spring) or double up another day. Also I will still assign it when we are on "mom needs a break" breaks. Off to go do some figuring on paper.

Great tips! The way I made it work this past year was I looked at the next year curriculum and if a concept was going to be taught in depth again at the beginning of that next course we skipped the chapters at the end of the current course. This worked well for math anyway and it also gave me a chance to make sure my child had a handle on whatever concepts were going to be taught at the beginning of the new school year. Of course if the concepts were really challenging and I didn’t feel we could skip then this would not work! We’ll see how it goes this year!

I’m looking to switch to BJU for next year, 8th grade, for the Science, History and probably Spanish. My son is Autistic, ADHD, Dysgraphia so we need online options. We’ll have to figure out the days and work-arounds for when he has his weekly speech and Ot appointments. God will show us the way 🙏🏻

BJU was too intensive for my teen. We switched to Masterbooks for American History and loved it. Doing creative projects each quarter/semester was fun. My teen researched and created art for Ponce de Leon, wrote poems about the Founding Fathers, and finished with a Photo Journal of Homes in the 1800’s

I’m not sure if this would work for a high school level class or a mastery based curriculum but we use Abeka videos and school 4 days a week. We used to double lessons on test days but as they got older it become harder so now we just try to hit lesson 150 and call it a year (Abeka has 170 lessons). The last 20 lessons are taught the following year and further in depth so we have not had any trouble with it. My oldest is starting 7th grade and I am not sure how this will work for Biology or Chemistry in high school, it’s been on my mind the last month!

Thanks for this, we just started and it's taking us FOREVER to get through all the things. I think we're just going to do the video side of it and skip over some of the assignments if I feel it is well understood or maybe just skip tests because we don't really do tests in our homeschool. I'm so torn though, I guess we will see.

This has been the video that I really needed to watch, so thank you for that. I had a few questions. My son is in middle school and we want to go the homeschooling route for more options in our schedule. We looked at the Good and Beautiful first and really liked the 120 lesson plan. We really have been hearing great things about BJU, and that is what my son school currently uses. On average, how long does it take to go through the daily lessons? Also, how many classes do you have to take to beconsidered accredidted through them? TIA
