      Yes do a compression check. If it fails, squirt some oil in each cylinder and repeat the test. If it is any better then it is the rings/lower end. The oil will help seal the rings raising the compression. This is not a fix. Lower end is going to cost you. If the second test is no better then it is the valves.

    I've got an 2006 Prius that went through 1 quart every 1000 miles. Went round and round trying different things to slow the oil consumption. The last thing I tried was the B12 soak. Pull the plugs and spray B12 carb cleaner into the cylinder until there's a nice pool of it sitting on top of the piston. Thread the spark plug back in a few threads to mitigate evaporation. Check it every few hours and top off as necessary. I let it sit for roughly 24-36 hours; the longer the better. At the end, suction all of the fluid that remained in the cylinder out to prevent hydrolocking the engine. Drain and refill the oil as whatever seeped past the rings made it into the oil. Reinstall the everything. So far, consumption is far more palatable. I've gone to 5000 mile oil changes (no clue what the previous owner did). It's only been losing maybe half a quart per oil change interval now. While it's only been about 8000 miles total since doing it, it's a drastic improvement. I thought I was going to have to put new rings/engine in, but now I've got hope for it. If only the oil consumption hadn't toasted the o2 sensors and/or cat ...

    Get Triple A (AAA). You will need their help. When the seller sees the cost he is responsible to pay, if they are smart they will offer to buy the car back. The people at the AAA will be more than happy to help. The place is airconditioned and usually not crowded.
    Section 24007 (b)(2) of the California Vehicle Code states it's the responsibility of the seller to provide a valid smog certificate before or during the sale of a vehicle. Nov 13, 2020
    If the vehicle is already in your possession, and the private car seller didn’t give you proof of passing the smog check test, try finding an amicable solution for you both. If that doesn’t work out, you may have to take legal action since the California DMV won’t get involved.

I can remember changing 8 plugs in 1/2 an hour. 6 plugs took me 3 1/2 hours because of all the things I had to take off first or work around. Still, no bloody knuckles and I'll do it again in another 60k miles. Thanks for a great RUclips channel.

    I presume you already have reassembled the plugs but I would have done a compression test and my guess is #1 oil piston ring is stuck or clogged. If so, I recommend a seafoam service in the crankcase and upper cylinder through the vacuum lines.
    Peek under the valve cover through the oil filler and see if you can tell sludge or golden oil deposits on the inside.
    Shameful people who flip cars like this.
    That oil leak is destroying this engine. And I'm likely to guess why it poisoned the cat as well.

    i'm a outlier saying this, its unfortunate that 2nd gen engines needs a rering and a oil catch can for longevity of the catalytic and keeping the engine internals clean. the nice things is that prius engines looks new inside after cleaning even at 350k mi. i know because i did it. assuming that maintenance was done correctly.

    • @Esteban_Herrera
      @Esteban_Herrera 2 года назад

      If it were my car and was still awesome inside, I would have the engine rebuilt too. It's possible paying the cost of a new car +Taxes and Registration would cost more than the engine. I would probably hot rod the engine and have the fastest Prius out there. :p

    good news is that with all that with all the carbon billed up on the pistons it will increase the compression ratio while also burning oil because of clogged oil piston rings. GG currently have a an 05 scion xb at 290k miles. with same engine, been burning oil for years. its typical on these 1NZ-FE engines to burn oil..you just feed the beast and cleen those sparks plugs after a few months. :P

    Whatever deal he got on the purchase price will be more than invalidated by the cost of getting that vehicle to run to spec. I agree with another viewer who recommended looking under the valve cover. If things look bad under there, it might be best long term for the owner to cut his losses and sell the vehicle to a boneyard, or to an auction dealer. This was an expensive lesson about the value of pre-purchase vehicle inspections. If the seller won't agree to one, then just leave. Especially with a vehicle that old and with that many miles.
