Great tutorial. I followed it and put a Shimano Deore CSM5100 11/51 on, after some tuning errors on my part, corrected on the 2nd ride, it works great, I don't notice any noise on the lowest gears. It did seem to reduce the noise in the stand but that could have been my initial tuning error, or because I was using Hope pully wheels rather than Shimano. Thank you, you've transformed my ride.
I'm looking to buy this RD and do this mod, pairing with a 38 or 40T up front. Do you reckon it would be better to buy the 126 link chain then and cut it down instead of the 116?
Have this mod for almost two years, but on 2x setup - works flawlessly! Had to install a smaller 11-42 cassette, though. With 11-46 I have to compromise either extreme biggy-biggy option, or small-small because of the capacity.
as for installing that peg back on to the cage, you should tape it to the screw driver. So this way itll stay attached to the screw driver without needing a 2nd person or keep on falling out.
Seems like you could stick something, like a rolled up rag or a small cardboard box, between the cage and the derailleur to hold it open. Then, you'd have both hands free.
I just did not remove the derailleur from the bike (bike on tacx spider team bikestand), so I freed one hand. That way I also did not have to touch the cable either.
Thanks for the clear documentation of this derailleur hack. I tried it on my own bike and it works perfectly. I now have 40-24 in the front and 11-42 in the back, all the gears I ever wanted.
I was lazy enough to try this RX812 / 11-51t M5100 setup without even doing this mod. The result was... well, it works! The B-screw is all the way in but it shifts smoothly across all the gears. I'm using a 38t Wolftooth chainring with 11s Shimano chain.
@@jamescourier1545 No, just a stock 812 directly on the derailleur hanger. It’s been working flawlessly for a couple of months. Fantastic idea. My second hand gravel bike came with a Garbaruk setup to get a wide range 11spd. If I were doing it myself, this is a much cheaper way to get the same end result
i notice some discussion around 2x set ups. i found the grx 11 speed rear mech actually takes a 11-40 quite readily. with a 46/30 chain ring, ithe 30 to the 40 will be sufficient for many.
@@positiivi_temeI’ve see several people on Reddit saying it worked. The 11-40 is in my wishlist (I’m currently rocking the standard GRX812 2x 46-30 setup, with the 11-34 cassette)
Nice stuff !!! I have a GRX810 RD, I wonder if this would still apply, or if there is anything else different other than the cage for the 2x version of the derrailleur ...
Any chance of doing this with the 810 grx? Heck, can you try this with a 2x for infinite range and see where the capacity actually holds the setup back?
The dream bikepacking gearing would be to keep the 2x with a wide 51t cassette! 2x mullet? Is there a chain long enough? Any other reason this wouldn’t work?
I've used this mod to allow me to run a Di2 RX817 with 11-42 and 48-32 Absolute Black Super Compact oval chainrings. Couldn't get enough chain tension with the standard cage on the 32 ring/smallest cog (Di2 doesn't allow you to engage the smallest 2 cogs anyway). But with this extended cage, I can get all gears (minus the 2 smallest) working fine. The RX817 is, in theory, 1x only but I found it works fine, it just doesn't do the semi-shift thing of moving cogs when you shift between big and small chainrings. The front derailleur still auto trims. I'm going to do the same mode to a second bike I have running 1x RX812. Many thanks.
I'm wondering if one could use a GRX 810 derailleur cage on a GRX 812 body. I have an existing 2x drivetrain with an 810 that I'm trying to run an 11-40 cassette on. It works, sort of, but not well.
Would it be possible to get an update on how this setup has been performing now that you've put a number of miles on it? Also, how is the shifting performance in the smaller gears? Stoke to try this if it's what you recommend for getting a bigger cassette to work with a GRX600 drive train.
Hi! I've done this mod 2-3 months ago, while upgrading form 2x9 Sora that was as stock preset on my bike. I've done around 800km, had one bigger crash (bended hanger) and everything works perfect. I'm on 40 chain ring (Grx 800 with InPeak power meter) and Shimano 11-51 Deore 5100 cassette. I bought 138 link chain and shortened it to proper length. There's no strange sounds on hard gears (11T). On 51 ring there's little bit of cracking due to big chain crossing from front to back, but it's not much bigger than on my 1x12 Enduro bike, so for me it was perfect deal. If you'd like to have 1x system with good climbing potential - go for it! 😊
@@droideka-1 everything is good. I've only changed a chain from Shimano to SRAM - it's much quieter that way. I've made around 1-1,5k km on this mod, so fully tested 👍
I did this same mod last year on an 812 RD to give me more chain wrap capacity on my 2x GRX setup with a mid size cassette. I now have the 46/30 on the front and a 11-42 XT cassette on the back. It works fairly well, but I think you could still use a stock 812 and just avoid the small-small(s) shift locations for an expanded range 2x.
Exactly what I'm trying to accomplish. RD-RX812 (with M8000 cage mod) with an 11-42 M7000 cassette and GRX 46-30T cranks. Can you elaborate on the "fairly well" aspect you experienced?
I used an 812 derailleur because the parallelogram geometry is designed for larger cassettes, I did not try this mod with the 810. I say fairly well because it was quite fiddly to get the b-screw just right. It looks like the XT cassette has more heavily profiled teeth compared to the 11-34 road cassette and I think that contributes to some of the clunking on up shifts. I notice it in the stand, but not on the trail. Or maybe it’s just the bigger jumps between the cogs.
@@dgc-3554 I've been running a 2x 810 with an 11-40 rear using nothing but a Goatlink. TBH I probably didn't even need that but I don't like the idea of the B-screw falling out.
Excellent mod! :) Love how you've been doing those recently. Much appreciated :) (Those clutched RD are really way more involved compared to my retro/vintage STX RDs I usually work with :D )
What I like about this that had me seek out a 2x10 SWORD instead of GRX was the Microshift gave you lower gear range to work with. Thats actually lower than my 12 speed XC bike's ratio.
GRX 812 also works reasonably well up to 46t with no modifications whatsoever (not even a goat link). That's what I've got on my commuter/gravel bike and it shifts smoothly enough for my liking.
I set up a RX812 with a Garbaruk cage and 11-46 cassette (1x). Works really nice. I’ve got another RX812 from another build that I’m going to set up using your mods. That will be my cheap backup if something bashes that big Garbaruk cage.
From my point of view the chain is just one link to short in the current configuration. The new cage increases the chainlengh by approximately one link, so what's the point?
I'm using the same 1x11 and 11-51T cassette on my Cube Reaction Hybrid eMTB, but with a 38T chainring. It's a LOT of range. Mine came with a Deore 5100 SGS derailleur. It uses a long-ass chain though. It's over 120 links.
Probably an stereo full suspension. An reaction has an relatively short chain. Btw if these parts wear out fast you can swap to cues 11 speed. It does require a derailleur and shifter swap for 2-3x more service life.
@@barneyklingenberg4078 That's exactly what my next upgrade is going to be. I've been watching videos on Cues and they seem perfect for ebikes. Those thicker teeth on the chainring will be very strong. 300% more life apparently. I really should have done it already when my Derailleur got sucked into the wheel lol, but at the time I didn't really have the money, so it's on my list.
Giving this a go now, after the rx822 not so good results… One thing is for sure 1x with an 11-51 cassete is awesome !!!! When I installed the single chainring I put it in the INNER position, so the chainline to the biggest cogs is fine. I tested with a string and it was the best solution in my case. Depending on the frame you might not have clearance for a big chainring there, but in my frame it fits fine up to a 44 or so.
One mistake: the torque spec to tighten the plate axle is 8-10nm. When you say "about 2nm," you were reading a different section in the manual "checking the friction torque (of the chain stabilizer)."
I did not have luck trying to dial in the RX822 on my 11 speed setup with the 11-51t cassette. This looks definitely doable. I would love to hear which mod you think works better (RX822 12 speed vs. this). I'm ready to give another try with the 12 speed derailleur, but if this works equally as good I'm in!
Love the experimentation! Thanks!! Probably could use a couple of extra links in the chain and that chain angle on the big cog on back could get interesting, though. Like previous comments, I put a 11-40 XT cassette on my 2X GRX 810 that was supposed to have a 34 max cog I think. Didn't really like the way the B-screw was sitting (although it was probably fine) so I got a goat link and the screw now sits flush on the tab - and the system works flawlessly. Curious how much larger of a cassette I could actually put back there now! I'm not in the 1x camp and don't think I ever will be. 2X is much better in my view.
Yes, he can benefit with longer chain. I'm also in the same setup. Not into 1x as it seems more limiting and I have 11-40 with only unwinding the B-scew.
I am also in the 2x camp. Tried and 11-42 cassete with the GRX810 (with direct mount goat) and it kind of worked, but shifting was not so nice. I didn't have a 40 cassete to try out ... currently running an 11-36 with 32/48 out front. Think is, I also do a bit of road riding on the bike, and the small cogs get used, on the larger cassettes, the 11 to 13 cog gap is very noticeable. I found out that the SUNRACE 11-36 cassete still has 11-12-13 on the smallest cogs, which is perfect for stretches of road, and then it gets bigger for offroad :)
Just throwing in my experience: running a 11-40 in the rear w/ a GRX815 Di2 derailleur, mounted to a 10-speed goatlink. Front is 46-30 AbsoluteBlack oval chainrings. Everything works great and I've got good range. My fitness is the determining factor before gearing in most instances.
I was thinking of putting a 40 of 42t rear cassette on my grx 810 rear derrallier. It’s a 2x front set up with a 11-34t rear cassette. Will this work if I just adjust the b screw and change the chain?
Great job! I just installed the set and it works fine. One question: the upper part of the chain is vibrating significantly „to the sides” when on the lowest gear - any way to deal with the problem? Thanks for the video.
I tried replacing the cage, im not sure what i did wrong my derrailleur body doesnt sit right, it kind of leans on the cage. Any help would be appreciated
I recently changed to shorter cranks (on my 2x11 road bike) as I have some hip issues. However this has noticeably reduced my low end gearing (reduced leverage). My solution was to put a 42 cassette on and use a Roadlink DM to allow the Ultegra derailleur to accommodate the big sprocket. This works "okay", but overall the transmission is noisier, notchier and finnickier. I think this GRX 812 solution looks like a better way to go. Or maybe even do the unthinkable and go 1X, as the front derailleur seems to be where a lot of the noise is coming from.

hold on, did you ride the GRX 812 with two chainrings? i was thinking of doing that but everybody tells me the proper way to do it is to get the GRX 810 the video was awesome thanks. subscribed!
This brakes my mind and decades of mixandmatching shimano derailleurs... Derailleur total capacity (read cage length) was never a limiting factor for bigger cassettes, but upper pulley offset is. 11sp XT uses GS cage for 1x11-46 and SGS for 2x11-42 - it is needed to make up the slack of front shifter, not to allow for a bigger cassette. If anything, a GS cage of deore 5100 is the right answer for 11-51 cassette. So if SGS from XT 8000 helps, you should have gotten by just fine with original GRX 812 GS, only being careful with chain length and B-tension. You can also see how much more movement of the cage is left in the smallest sprocket of the final build.
Which microshift 12speed MTB thumb shifter for ultimate flexibility??? The Shimano or SRAM compatible?????? Please advise, I like mixing a lot and experimenting!!!!! Thank you
i don't really get this set up quiet. there is a rattling noise i can't eliminate on the second and third largest chainrings. anybody else have this issue?
You could also buy a GRX RD-RX400 which already comes with the SGS cage and a very conservative claim of 41T max capacity and 36T max cog. I've used this on a 48-31 x 11-42 setup.
Would such a mod also be feasible for 10 speed road derailers? My old Gravelbike is desperate for better gearing and this looks just like what might help
I don’t know why but for me it doesn’t work. Even with a completely screwed in b screw there is not enough space to even fit in the shimano 11-46t on the highest gear. I will try to combine it with a goat link now
I'm not sure if it is just me, but it sounded a bit noisy in the other gears too, didn't it? Maybe non ideal mic placement. Would it be worthwhile to shim the chainring a bit?
I did something similar after crashing and rebuilding my 10-speed Di2 RD with a long cage and Wolf Tooth and 30-11, but couldn't quite get 32-11 to work. (Also, I believe that SRAM chain you have is made for them by KMC... oh and their X11EL is excellent).
i found a mistake on your ''experiment'' did you check the offset of the cassette and the crankset and the chainline? is the chain straight on the 5/6 speed or it has a extreme offset? remember the chains have limit on the offset they can hold and if you backpedal on a 10/11 speed the chain might drop ( sometimes depending on the offset it drops at 7/8/9 speeds )and since you used a dual crankset and removed the smal chainring the offset might be bigger than the chain can hold. maybe i'm wrong i will rewatch and see if i can notice. Edit : Yeah only with the sound at 8:26 that crackling noise coming from the chain and cassette i can confirm that indeed you have a offset issue this might come not because the Sram chain but the chainring not pairing with the chainline of the cassette, again tell me if i'm wrong in something.
Chain length in this vid is too short. It’s all I had to demo the mod. Maybe I’ll post an update. The new chain and correct b limit is pretty good. I can backpedal hard and the chain doesn’t drop. There could be a mismatch in chainline, but I only replaced an 11 speed 11-34 with an 11 speed 11-51, and used the stock grx 1x chainring

I noticed the Terravail Sparwood tire on your wheel. What's your take on those? I have a set of 29 x 2.2s from a bike a bought and found them to roll reasonably fast and have good straight-line traction, but lacked traction in flat corners off-road. So good for long distance bike-packing maybe?
If you look up the XT GS and SGS max low sprocket capacity on Shimano's tech docs, they're both rated to the same 46 tooth. The SGS long cage is only advantageous to take up the slack when shifting between chainrings up front. I would wager the GS cage would be a better option for this mod given that it's 1x. Thoughts?
@@TheBikeSauce that's not my understanding of how it works. The long cage is for taking up the slack in double setups, it has no impact max sprocket size in 1x applications. That's why Shimano lists them both as having 46 tooth max low sprocket for 1x. I could be wrong though!
@@drucyphr That's "Total capacity" you're referencing, which factors in multiple chainrings. The value in question is "low sprocket max" which is the same for the SGS and GS
@@MrJonas2255 The job of the long cage is to take up the slack between the "longest" and "shortest" lengths the chain has to be. ie: for a 1x setup the difference between the 11 and the 51t sprocket, and for 2x setups the difference between big/big and small/small. The required total capacity for this setup (11-51t) is 40. So, just outside the range of the GS. If you had the chain length perfect, maybe it would work, but you'd have almost no chain tension in the 11t (when railing down descents) and you'll beat the crap out of your chainstays. Likewise in the climbing gear drivetrain efficiency may suck with that much tension being put on the chain from the rear cage at such an extreme angle. You are however correct in your understanding that the pulley cage doesn't effect theoretical maximum sprocket size.

@@MrSchoeppel yep, XT M8000 SGS cage + GRX RD-812 derailleur + much longer chain + b-screw adjustments
as for installing that peg back on to the cage, you should tape it to the screw driver. So this way itll stay attached to the screw driver without needing a 2nd person or keep on falling out.
Seems like you could stick something, like a rolled up rag or a small cardboard box, between the cage and the derailleur to hold it open. Then, you'd have both hands free.
There you go. A block of appropriate size would work just fine 👍
just dab your screwdriver in some assembly grease and that fairly light screw will stick. or get the fancy magnetised one.
Helpful hints guys, much appreciated. I will try to mod my rd-rz812 this evening 😅
I just did not remove the derailleur from the bike (bike on tacx spider team bikestand), so I freed one hand. That way I also did not have to touch the cable either.
This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for! Looks like I'm ordering some parts! Cheers
Thanks for the clear documentation of this derailleur hack. I tried it on my own bike and it works perfectly. I now have 40-24 in the front and 11-42 in the back, all the gears I ever wanted.
42 cassette works stock no mods just fine
Well done with sufficient for us DIYers to do successfully. Thanks
I was lazy enough to try this RX812 / 11-51t M5100 setup without even doing this mod. The result was... well, it works! The B-screw is all the way in but it shifts smoothly across all the gears. I'm using a 38t Wolftooth chainring with 11s Shimano chain.
Did you need to add a goat link to make it work without the SGS cage?
@@jamescourier1545 No, just a stock 812 directly on the derailleur hanger. It’s been working flawlessly for a couple of months. It’s way out of the officially announced gear range so nobody would even think of trying. I can’t paste the link here due to YT regulation, but there’s a video of someone trying out this setup.
What length chain did yoh used? 116 or 118?
@@Nevseremos1 116, i think. Just a normal shimano hg chain. The chainstay on my bike is quite short (420mm), though.
Fantastic idea. My second hand gravel bike came with a Garbaruk setup to get a wide range 11spd. If I were doing it myself, this is a much cheaper way to get the same end result
But then you wouldn't have those big, sexy jockey wheels
i notice some discussion around 2x set ups. i found the grx 11 speed rear mech actually takes a 11-40 quite readily. with a 46/30 chain ring, ithe 30 to the 40 will be sufficient for many.
I have been wondering this, if it would work. Would be nice to see someone test it out in their cave of bad ideas. 😄
@@positiivi_temeI’ve see several people on Reddit saying it worked. The 11-40 is in my wishlist (I’m currently rocking the standard GRX812 2x 46-30 setup, with the 11-34 cassette)
It worked for me, I have the GRX 812 RD with 46/30 front and 11-40 rear. Going to try the same thing with the GRX 400 soon
@MeowHikes did you modify the cage of the 812? Or stock
you can also do this as 2X if you stick with 11-40/11-42 cassettes.
Great to see another episode of this conversion series! Thanks again! :)
Thats a simple and affordable way to get there! Nice video.
Thanks for diving deep on all shimano mullet set ups. Very useful info since this trend is still being discovered by most.
Nice stuff !!! I have a GRX810 RD, I wonder if this would still apply, or if there is anything else different other than the cage for the 2x version of the derrailleur ...
damn dude, that is a slick little mod, glad the parts have some interchangeability still across shimano's lineup.
Any chance of doing this with the 810 grx? Heck, can you try this with a 2x for infinite range and see where the capacity actually holds the setup back?
Haven't tried with an 810 but rx will get to 46 on a 2x.
Great video! I would love to see something similar for a SRAM XPLR ETAP drivetrain
Nice idea with the cage of the Xt. When you set up the Rear derailleur, the small grey shifter have to be ON.
The clutch? I prefer to index without the clutch on to eliminate the variable of additional stiction
Ok,but for the enclosing angle the clutch has to be closed. But everbody has their own mechanical Style@@TheBikeSauce
The dream bikepacking gearing would be to keep the 2x with a wide 51t cassette! 2x mullet? Is there a chain long enough? Any other reason this wouldn’t work?
I did the same just with the GRX crank and all deore rear d and cassette - now on the micro spline body
@@dziubab Just following up on this, everything still good? I'm also looking to upgrade from sora.
@@droideka-1 everything is good. I've only changed a chain from Shimano to SRAM - it's much quieter that way.
I've made around 1-1,5k km on this mod, so fully tested 👍
@@dziubab Awesome! Thank you
Awesome video! I was considering this mod and your step by step instructions will be very helpful!
Have you make that with the rx810 last year?
@@dgc-3554so do you recommend ur set up?
Excellent mod! :) Love how you've been doing those recently. Much appreciated :) (Those clutched RD are really way more involved compared to my retro/vintage STX RDs I usually work with :D )
What I like about this that had me seek out a 2x10 SWORD instead of GRX was the Microshift gave you lower gear range to work with. Thats actually lower than my 12 speed XC bike's ratio.
Could this mod be done keeping the 2X with a longer chain?
GRX 812 also works reasonably well up to 46t with no modifications whatsoever (not even a goat link). That's what I've got on my commuter/gravel bike and it shifts smoothly enough for my liking.
I was running 46t w GRX812 for a long time. 40t up front was just barely not enough for me.
I am using 51t without any modifications.
Yea ppl keep pointing it out. It’s what I had on hand. An old sram chain. I’ll update with a new 11 speed shimano chain at the right length.
Using this exact derailleur setup on a 52-36 crank with 11-42 cassette. Works fine, just added 2 links to the standard 11 speed chain
Can you use a 12 speed chain instead of the 2 links? I got a spare chain. Do i have to remove links on the 12 speed chain?
@@jkzv1you should technically be able to use a 12 spd chain although I wouldn't recommend it as the inner width does change
Hello. I really liked this modification. Congratulations on the idea and thanks for sharing. One question: Does this cage also work on the GRX400?
Would love to know too!
you tried?
Been using this mod for 2x11 setup. 36/22 front and 11-46 rear easily. Now that's some range...
the GRX812 works with 2x setup?
This is a very helpful tip.
And we need more videos like this!
This mod works! shifts perfectly.
Awesome! That's why I LOVE this channel! 😎👍💯
My 1x11 with grx822 from last movie work now very well. But it needs a shimano chain.
hi i can't find the video about converting your 2x crankset to 1x. thanks
Money! Well done. This is my kind of mod. So much smoother than using the funny derailleur hangers.
Giving this a go now, after the rx822 not so good results…
One thing is for sure 1x with an 11-51 cassete is awesome !!!!
When I installed the single chainring I put it in the INNER position, so the chainline to the biggest cogs is fine.
I tested with a string and it was the best solution in my case. Depending on the frame you might not have clearance for a big chainring there, but in my frame it fits fine up to a 44 or so.
I was just looking for this mullet setup!
Thanks!
Heads up: according to the Shimano manual, the plate axle should be torqued to 8-10 Nm, not 2 Nm
I would love to hear which mod you think works better (RX822 12 speed vs. this). I'm ready to give another try with the 12 speed derailleur, but if this works equally as good I'm in!
anyways, this works like butter. Forget the 12speed derailleur. Now I'm 11/51 in the back with a 36t chainring loving life
Love the experimentation!
Yea, this chain was stock length off the GRX 2x (11-32, 31/48) I think. An extra link would probably do it. New chain is already on the way.
Frisbee singles definitely have the tard look while sacrificing range🤷
I was thinking of putting a 40 of 42t rear cassette on my grx 810 rear derrallier. It’s a 2x front set up with a 11-34t rear cassette. Will this work if I just adjust the b screw and change the chain?
Hi, would be interesting if this also works with a Grx 600 and a Deore Cage
Great job! I just installed the set and it works fine. One question: the upper part of the chain is vibrating significantly „to the sides” when on the lowest gear - any way to deal with the problem? Thanks for the video.
Would this work with other XT models than the M8000? Everyone is sold out of M8000 SGS cages, but there are many M786 SGS cages online
Prob a dumb question... Would adding a larger Lower Lockey Wheel simulate a longer cage? Or am I completely not understanding what is gained.
That’s a solid idea. It could potentially increase the drivetrain capacity, but it wouldn’t help with the max cog spec.
I tried replacing the cage, im not sure what i did wrong my derrailleur body doesnt sit right, it kind of leans on the cage. Any help would be appreciated
Great inexpensive solution. Genius! Does anyone know which Shimano 11=51 11 speed cassette weighs the least? Thanks!!!
M5100 650g
I recently changed to shorter cranks (on my 2x11 road bike) as I have some hip issues. However this has noticeably reduced my low end gearing (reduced leverage). My solution was to put a 42 cassette on and use a Roadlink DM to allow the Ultegra derailleur to accommodate the big sprocket. This works "okay", but overall the transmission is noisier, notchier and finnickier. I think this GRX 812 solution looks like a better way to go. Or maybe even do the unthinkable and go 1X, as the front derailleur seems to be where a lot of the noise is coming from.
Gracias
Hello. How do you find the shifting with the clutch turned on?
Sweet!!! Do you have any idea you can reproduce this in a 2x setup instead ?
I'd like to extend my 11-34 11sp cassette up to a 11-40, 11-42, or 11-46 using a DEORE XT M8000 Series cassette and keeping my GRX 2x chainrings 48-31.

@@markobolt9030 regardless of speed, do you think 40t cassette is optimal for 2x, what's left is but size the right chainring upfront, be it 46/30 or 42/26 or whatever is required and within the derailleur capacity?

That mod it´s not possible on GRX DI2 RD-RX815, the cage hits some of the inside components of the derrailleur and dosn´t shift to the smaller cogs ...
@thebikesauce I have an 11 speed SLX derailleur in my parts bin. I believe it would be the RD-M7000 long cage derailleur. I used it on an older hardtail. Will the cage plates from the RD-M7000 transfer over to the GRX 812 11spd derailleur?
Can this hack be used in a 2x setup?

The latest grx 822 rd can already handle 10-50t cassette. It’s just the brifters are pricey..

This might be something I have to try for my GRX400 rear derailleur. I've been running it 1x with a 42t at the back and the wolftooth link.
Your GRX RX400 RD already has the SGS cage (at least mine does). You don't need to buy anything.
Did you try this? Want to try it too
@@lastfm4477would this work with a 2x10 GRX 600/400 to got to a 1x12?
Thank you
Would this mod work to up the capacity on a 2by system also?
i don't really get this set up quiet. there is a rattling noise i can't eliminate on the second and third largest chainrings. anybody else have this issue?
You could also buy a GRX RD-RX400 which already comes with the SGS cage and a very conservative claim of 41T max capacity and 36T max cog. I've used this on a 48-31 x 11-42 setup.
with this modification the grx 400 would work with a 1x 50t cog?
Anyone know if this would work with the XTR M9000 SGS cages? The XT cages are pretty tough to find right now.
Would such a mod also be feasible for 10 speed road derailers?
My old Gravelbike is desperate for better gearing and this looks just like what might help
Hi, sorry for dubbing the question if asked already. What is the minimum chain links for such a mullet 11/51 by 40 chainring please? Thanks everyone
Depends on the length of the chainstay on the bike.
Yes! Been waiting for this
Wow! So, basically you put XT derailler cage plates on your rear derailleur? Will this modification, XT cages on a Dura-Ace derailleur also work?
Is it possible to do the same mod with the di2 version grx817?
Can this mod be done with a different cage,? the XT 8000 cages seems impossible to get here in Canada
You can make the same upgrade with sram 11s
Anybody think you could do this with GRX 400 10-speed for a 1x setup?
i would like to know
I did something similar after crashing and rebuilding my 10-speed Di2 RD with a long cage and Wolf Tooth and 30-11, but couldn't quite get 32-11 to work.
@@TheBikeSauce I see, I'm pretty interested on this mod since i'm building a gravel bike I will follow up if there it is an update, thanks for the answer o/

Why not use the grx 810 cage its grx and long cage?
Another awesome mod. I wish I had seen this earlier.
Would this work on a GRX 810 as well?
If you look up the XT GS and SGS max low sprocket capacity on Shimano's tech docs, they're both rated to the same 46 tooth. The SGS long cage is only advantageous to take up the slack when shifting between chainrings up front. I would wager the GS cage would be a better option for this mod given that it's 1x. Thoughts?
Yea the long cage just barely takes app all the slack in this 11-51t. I'm nearly certain the SG cage wouldn't work here
@@TheBikeSauce that's not my understanding of how it works. The long cage is for taking up the slack in double setups, it has no impact max sprocket size in 1x applications. That's why Shimano lists them both as having 46 tooth max low sprocket for 1x. I could be wrong though!
I looked it up. 39 on the GS and 47 on the SGS. RD-M8000
Very cool! Was just looking around to see what these parts would cost in Canada, unfortunately I cant find them and everywhere in the US (that will ship to Canada) is out of stock with the Outer Plate.
