The Irish President is a largely ceremonial with only a few powers that are used very sparingly or only on the advice of the cabinet.
It’s similar to the Queen of England but with slightly more political power.
Edit: also the main thing that is dividing America is that is democratic systems are failing. Things like the electoral collage and filibusters mean that policies the vast majority of people support (such as gun control and access to abortion) are unable to be passed.
