I would be excited for Civ VII if it wasn't broken up in a million DLC's. There's 8 civs that do not come with the base game already. I'll stick to V until the anthology gets released years from now. Not gonna play an incomplete Civ game.

I agree with you. There are so many games to play I can wait at least two to four years easily and not feel at a loss. We need to get back to the spirit of games back in the 90s and early 2000s. DLC's and not updates/expansions that cost at most $20-30 US will be the eventual death or holding back of gaming.
Alpha Centauri and Colonization both are at least 30 years old and stand the test of time. Alpha Centauri has been added to Steam and Colonization is on GOG. Both are highly worth it.
There's also the Civilization 4 remake of Colonization from 2008. Surprised they didn't mention it here although I still prefer the original from 1994.
Anyone is still excited for Civ7? If I ever buy it then only after 4-5 years of developement, with all DLC in single package on sale. I buy lots of games, but I just dont feel like feeding a kraken. Not to mention that Civ6 was first game in the series that made me bored after several hours. And I've played all of Civs, including C1. I'd love to have Civ2 on steam, though.
I was the same, it was the first civ, where I used to fall asleep at my gaming desk, matter of fact it was the only game I've ever fallen asleep in my gaming chair lol
I go way back to Civ I as a boomer. I loved all of the Civilization games including Beyond Earth except for Civilization 6 which also bored me out of my skull. With the dimwitted make busy work idea of including districts ( a feature that basically none of the old timers asked for) and a cartoony base... Civ 6 was a $150 albatross with all of the DLC's that I played four entire times when it was out for two years and uninstalled it as bloatware from all two of my desktops and my laptop to recover needed space on my SSDs. It was like drying clothes it was so boring.
I'm going to be skipping Civ 7, for a couple years at least, as I personally don't see $70 worth of value in what's being presented. Hope I turn out to be wrong, but either way I appreciate this list. I love ancient history, so I'm hoping Old World will scratch that 4X itch! Will be giving Humankind a try shortly too.
Old World is great. It is a Paradox game (without the endless DLC) mixed with Civ set in the ancient world. It has designers who worked on Civilization III and IV. It is a good game. I have the three DLC's which are not overpriced. I originally bought it on Epic and have uploaded it to Steam as well. All of the platforms have their place from Steam to Epic to GOG.
I love LT gaming as you guys are on the new and old games. Endless Legends... I have not given that a spin since 2020. I love Humankind and Old World. Being an old modder from Civilization III (The Ancient Mediterranean Mod) and Civilization IV (Total Realism Mod) as Ankhenaton... the 4X and strategy genre are the best in gaming. Civ 7 was good to incorporate a lot of Humankind, and I am glad they went away from the ultra cartoon feel of Civilization 6 which I uninstalled from all of my computers. I play Civilization V with the Vox Populi Mod and Beyond Earth, basically Alpha Centauri II. Old World with its ancient theme is superb. I will have to get the Fall of Rome game and Millenia as well. Hope your channel thrives. It is a good one. I have posted before and lost you guys in the mix. I love playing a lot of modded Total War from Emprie, Shogun II, Rome II, Attila, Pharaoh updated and Rome Remastered. Keep up the great work.

Alpha Centauri for the win. If only the interface and graphics could be updated. I last played it well over a decade ago but only 2 days ago had a random reminder of Lady Deirdre Skye's voice. Sweet
Luke, awesome compilation. Old World really stood out for me for its innovation and I am really glad you included Colonization, I didn't know it existed, looks like another great classic.
I loved Alpha Centauri back in the day but the graphics are too dated for me. I am not that modern guy addicted to graphics but it has to have been updated the past 10 years. It was and is a great game.
Thanks Luke. Battle of Polytopia is one of my favorite, relatively quick "go to" games I play pretty frequently. Definitely going to take a much closer look at Yield!, Millenia and Old World. Thanks partner.
Ive tried about half of what was suggested here for the past few years and they are good games. Humankind was great in the graphics, civ options, and combat; though I was a bit put off by changing cultures with every era. When I heard Civ 7 was imitating Humankind with the civ changes, I was no longer interested in it. It's a shame though, because the Civ franchise is my favorite 4x historical games. As to the others, I would recommend Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and Age of Wonders: Planetfall for all around good game play, combat, and sci-fi story telling. I definitely will take a closer look at Yield! Fall of Rome, Millenia, Endless Legend, and Old World.
By far the best alternative to Civ is Alpha Centauri and it's not even close. The depth of that game is like nothing that gets released today. Terraform the land, raise mountains or create seas, then use it as a viable strategy in warfare, drowning entire cities, missiles that leave a hole where the land was, complex leaders with distinct personalities who has as much chance of being erratic as they do reasonable, a genuinely deep and excellent sci fi story, unforgettable lines and best of all it's a couple of quid on GOG. The sad thing is we've lost the ability to make games like this now, deep, complex and rewarding games with manuals the size of an encyclopaedia.
Love seeing Endless Legend on the list! Such a rich and wonderful game! Added Yield to my wishlist as that looks great! Looking forward to your thoughts on that one!
You are showing the original Colonization from the 90s, running on MS-DOS/BOS-Box. Nothing wrong with that one. There is a newer version as well, however I remember it had serious balancing problems on release which were never really addressed. "We the people" mod is strongly recommended to have fun with that version.
Apart from *Warhammer 40,000* and *Colonization*, I have played all the mentioned games significantly more often and for longer periods than the respective current versions of *Civilization*. It is and remains, of course, a classic, but in the 4X genre, there are fantastic alternatives. That’s why it’s not a problem to bridge the time until *Civ7* is available at a reasonable price and in a finished state. This excessive pricing policy at 2K has become a real mystery to me. Other developers create at least equally good products with a significantly smaller budget.
Excessive pricing is no mystery when you take into account corporate greed. My personal policy in buying games is if a game is not $30.00 or under, or discounted at least half off, my wallet stays closed.
@@williamking3301 I totally agree. So many good games sitting dormant in my Steam, Epic and GOG libraries that I never have to overpay for unfinished games. I never buy early access either.
Colonization is great game. I really liked the new (civ4 game) also, eventhough the vanilla version have some crucial problems. if you want to play great mod for it I suggest playing the We The People mod :D (it is quite huge overhaul to the game, but makes the game to be on steroids"
In humankind choosing a different culture is optional. You can play one culture throughout the entire game. The only limitation is that you can't do stuff like start with a modern culture in ancient times which makes sense in my opinion. Most of the criticisms of Humankind are done by people who don't understand how the game works. This video seems to do the same.
True, but the AI does change cultures which I found mildly irritating. For example, assume on my southern border the Bantu are fighting the Romans, and I'm friendly with the Romans. Oh wait, now it's the Greeks fighting the Chinese, and I think I'm friendly with the Greeks? I know the leaders never change so I need to think "Agamemnon and Gilgamesh are fighting and I'm friends with Gilgamesh" but at this scale it's more natural to think of countries, not leaders. I LOVE the changed characteristics that changing cultures bring, but I would have preferred to have it as cards or attributes to assign to a culture that you keep the whole game. Just my 2 cents opinion... I agree with your comment about the criticisms of Humankind.
@@DreamingCyclist That's it's main issue with the culture switch I think, the fact both you and the AI use generic avatars means there's nothing to really anchor you in a civ. You get the French leader demanding something of you and often have to check to find out they were the Aztecs last turn.
Staying with the same culture meant losing out on any unique units and bonuses from a new culture in return for a tiny boost to scoring which quite often was less than the boost you got from picking a new culture, which meant it was 'playable' in the same sense having a single city on a one tile island is playable in Civ. Or at least that's how it was at launch, not sure if it's the same now given that was the least of it's problems to begin with. The main one being the game largely plays as a glorified Excel spreadsheet, and is about as interesting to boot.
@markwatson8714 all games are just glorified excel sheets. I remember when I studied game design one of my teachers pretty much told me that if I want to make games I have to love excel sheets.
Great video!!! Best alternative to Civ7, which is a disaster, is not civ5, not civ6, but, of course CIVILIZATION 4: with both DLC (super inexpensive, best 4X of all time)
I would say for myself that Civilization III is better than Civilization IV by a whisker. IV took a lot of chances with the genre for sure. They are both great.
@uncletimo6059 The mod may still be there. The Ancient Mediterranean Mod. Enjoy if it is. If not, try Total Realism for Civ 4. For awhile, my voice replaced Leonard Nimoy's voice. "You have achieved the wheel...". 🖖
@ haha, great plug, will try. am rocking Advanced Civ mod for 4, which is just awesome. vanilla with much better computer opponents and some very small tweaks to numbers.
@ Thanks I will try out that sweet mod. Right now I am playing Civilization 5 with both the Vox Populi Mod, The Ancient Mediterranean mod for Civ 5 Brave New World. It is so good playing as the Nubians. The Assyrians tried to hit me from the west and I turned them into my bitches after taking two cities. The Colchis hit me from the east at the same time. Fought them to a stalemate and they sought peace. Now after ten turns of peace they are spamming units for a rematch. I like these mods together because they don't let you trade cities for peace. You either wipe out your opposition or they remain to trouble you again. It is a great challenge. I will check out your mod for Civilization 4 after I finish with this one. Let me know when you get Civ 7 the definitive edition a couple years down the road.
These days I play Millennia to scratch my "One More Turn" itch. It ditches the focus on leaders and make countries differs from each others, they represented in the name of their cities . The obvious upside is that it balanced by default. It is fully focused on the journey through time and it doesn't feel like a slog due to it reward you for playing tall, you don't have to directly control so many cities and you can have any number of vassal cities - the game will not punish for having them. So no need to raze cities you conquer. Love that the Ai will fight back even if you have reduced it civ to just one city, taking the capital city will not cripple it like in normal Civ games. it can just upgrade vassal cities if it is losing its regular cities.
Let me also put in a word for the 2022 game Theocracy (not the 2000 RTS game of the same name). It's a single-developer game that has the appearance of Civ 1 or Master of Magic, but a neat twist in that if tech gets too advanced, everybody loses. So you want a tech advantage, but too big a tech advantage.
I'd say it's better than Planetfall, unless you're really into s-f setting. And there are still releases planned for AoW4. I've been playing it a lot recently and I love it.
If you brought SMAC - then I'd suggest Imperialism series. Much more focused timeline-wise, but nevertheless the same basic 4x formula. Still, enough changes to interest those, who played Civs to death.
Wont be going anywhere near CIV 7 at least till many years down the road. They have changed way too much to make it appealing to someone that has played the franchise since CIV 2. Also, it's too expensive
Colonization has an updated version with more modern graphics. The update still has some years on it but it's newer than the original. That said, they didn't change the game, it's still awesome. Just with better graphics.
Elemental: Fallen Enchantress is my favorite 4X game, slightly beating out Civ 3! Humankind and Age of Wonder: Planetfall are decent games, but i'm not a fan of the area choose games instead of the hex or square settle games! Alpha Centauri is my favorite Sid Meier game!
Humankind and Endless Legend are both excellent. Both beat Civ in different ways, but not quite overall. I do see both studios paying attention to each other though, and the genre is going great as a result! Curious why you did not mention Ara: History Untold though?
@@LTGamingRUclips Whoops! I just listened to that section again and understand why now 🙂 I missed it the first time, all good. Thank you for letting me know and keep up the great info!
@@DrPooks True, I am aware of that. However, I am hopeful that because they are not tied to Sega anymore, they can go back to what they were doing and listen to the community again. For example, Endless Legend was released two years before the Sega partnership started. But one of the founds left soon after and before Humankind, so I don't know if the magic sauce to make them great is there or not. Hopefully, though! A revitalised Humankind or an Endless Legend 2 could be great!
Great to see a list of Civilization like games as an alternative to the upcoming game. I didn't know about Yield and was always partial to those quick playing 4X games. A couple of these worth a 2nd look after your video also!
I have the Oldworld demo and I have to admit I really wasn't feeling the game. This might have been a result of the demo limitations. I really like the look of the game and was disappointed with the demo. I may have to bite the bullet and buy the full version to see if I can enjoy it as much as others.
Great list while waiting for Civ 7! Endless Legends is the most impressive in this list list as it was first launched a long time ago but its graphics and everything still holds. Endless indeed!
The music in Colonization was midi. Not many people had midi daughter-cards for their sound blaster sound cards so you all know it as beeps and bleeps. But it was insanely good music with flutes and drums and banjos playing a wide variety of period songs. ruclips.net/video/G9F0ydAGuyE/видео.html
I agree. I've been playing Civ since the first one was released in the early 90s and Civ 5 with the expansions and updates was the the last good one. I purchased Civ 6 but I never liked it - I didn't care for any of the changes to the gameplay such as districts, and it all looks goofy, like a children's book. It's apparently the same chief designer in Civ 7 so I'll give that one a miss.
The remake cash grab using Civ 6 was so disappointing. Sid didn't care about this game in 94, having someone else manage its development while he concentrated on Civilization, and he didn't care in 08. 😢

I found it refreshing and the new mechanics made me curious. That's rare these days!
Age of Wonders 4 is also good.
I'd say it's better than Planetfall, unless you're really into s-f setting. And there are still releases planned for AoW4. I've been playing it a lot recently and I love it.
I prefer AoW2. Good 4x.
@@michaelb-n8q the expenses of new game releases has got crazy!
Great games to get into, thank you.
Alpha Centauri looks very well.
Are some mods installed for this?
Or a special release?
Agreed, looks very HD
Colonization has an updated version with more modern graphics. The update still has some years on it but it's newer than the original. That said, they didn't change the game, it's still awesome. Just with better graphics.
Have played it back when it came out. The original just has a special place place for Tom and Me!
Was that the one that ran on the Civ4 engine?
@ correct!
I like the original much better then the civ 4 version.
Foe me they are 2 different games with the same theme and layout. It's like compairing Civ 3 and Civ4: both are good.
I mentioned it in the Honorable mention category and mainly due to the fact I haven't played it. Though changed that tonight!
@@LTGamingRUclips Whoops! I just listened to that section again and understand why now 🙂 I missed it the first time, all good. Thank you for letting me know and keep up the great info!
Much appreciated! :)
Sega severed their partnership with Amplitude late last year.
That would seem to put Humankind's future in doubt.
It was fun to make and consider these Civilization like games!
I have the Oldworld demo and I have to admit I really wasn't feeling the game. This might have been a result of the demo limitations. I really like the look of the game and was disappointed with the demo. I may have to bite the bullet and buy the full version to see if I can enjoy it as much as others.
Its very different and might be worth a revisit :)
Great list while waiting for Civ 7! Endless Legends is the most impressive in this list list as it was first launched a long time ago but its graphics and everything still holds.
Endless indeed!
Yeah we are waiting also! But always good to consider the options :)
Isent Endless Ledgen 2 comming soon ?
There is the civilization remake and i think beyond earth is a good alpha centauri option
It deserves another look for sure.
Eh. In my view, Beyond Earth is a giant missed opportunity. It is mostly a reskinned Civ V without many of the features that made SMAC compelling.
Nope. Pandora: Eclipse of Nashira better than Beyond Earth. Maybe exept graphic not so good.
Um there is no alternative to Civ 7 lol, but respect for showing the competition.
This was fun to make brother! Civilization 7 has got me quite excited
How is Ara not featured more prominently 🙄
probably because it isn't out yet
@@AlexiosTheSixthit came out in September last year
@@hgihthginot yeah, I'm surprised there hasn't been a lot of fanfare for it's release considering how hyped up it used to me
The music in Colonization was midi. Not many people had midi daughter-cards for their sound blaster sound cards so you all know it as beeps and bleeps. But it was insanely good music with flutes and drums and banjos playing a wide variety of period songs. ruclips.net/video/G9F0ydAGuyE/видео.html
There a better way to sense vibe of Colonization - play in Civ 4: Colonization.
The last good Civ was 5 and that's coming from someone who played the Civ series since 1991. Civ 7 is going to be an absolute joke
@@doctorzingo The districts... the major feature that no one asked for. I uninstalled that mess.
The only civ game worth playing is caveman 2 cosmos civ4 mod
Rts is just age of empire clones vs civ clones Vs total war clones
Forced cultural change is in right now ! Didn’t you know !?
Age of Wonders 4 is better than Planetfall imo
8:23 Why the choice of the 1994 game ? Colonization have an 2008 remake: Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization
@@aleyn7182 because the original is vastly superior. It surprises me people even raise this 😂😇🤷♂️
The remake cash grab using Civ 6 was so disappointing. Sid didn't care about this game in 94, having someone else manage its development while he concentrated on Civilization, and he didn't care in 08. 😢
Skipping Civ VII - abomination of a civ-game. Will stick to V, to least extent CiV 6.
Colonization! Played with a i386!
Civ 7 an Humankind suck Age of Wonders Planetfall & Civ 6 rule , but you forgot to mention Age of Wonders 4 ( unless was mentioned after i tuned out i only watched till end of my fave games section witch is Planetfall
perhaps you should actually play the game or at least check metacritic before recomending anything. Millennia had 5.8 user score....
@@tomekgwiazdka3994 perhaps you should learn to think for yourself. I explained why I enjoyed it and I don't just have to follow the crowd like you 😉
And ara history untold....?
@@mitrida it's discussed in the video.
Ara is trash
Humandkind is nice
Millenia is nice.
Old World is very good.
The others are meh
Civ 7 has gone super woke and so I will never be buying.
apparently you are into alternative spelling too...
Not quite sure what you mean?
