“A sawzall is actually a tool. It’s a saw, but in order for it to work, it goes back and forth, push and pull, and that’s exactly like some relationships- every relationship, really. So ‘Sawzall’ is sung from this really loving, unconditionally non-judgmental place of looking back on a relationship and thinking, like, ‘Was it my fault? Were you just depressed? Is that why? Because you weren’t you, you were just a depressed version of you? Should I have known that? Am I just overthinking this?’ It’s just thinking about why things didn’t work out with somebody you really, really, truly loved.” - BANKS on Sawzall
This comment made me cry my eyes out. So much of my relationships with friends family and loved ones are deteriorating because of my depression currently. I want to be that person that hey grew up with and know and love but I just don’t know how to be that person anymore.
Sawzall- another word for a 'reciprocating' saw, requiring two people using a push/pull method in order to cut. It takes two to make it work. It takes two to destroy. :''(
You know it doesn't have to be about anyone, lots of songs describe things that never happened to the author, they're about to relate and help people who have experience those things.
@@gladdy6412 That's right. However, Jillian usually writes from personal experience. It could be from someone else's perspective, but I highly doubt it.
The 'I gave you nothing, I understand' part really got to me. So many people write people off when they're struggling, so I love this admission of fault on the behalf of the people around the person that's struggling that could've been more supportive but ultimately weren't. So powerful.
The lyrics “I donate my love” are the most painful lyrics ever. Meaning she knows she’s not going to get the love and the emotions back .. but she willingly donates her love- knowing it won’t be reciprocated. Wow so simple and so sad
Got emotional throught the whole song but the "I donate my love/ I gave you nothing, I understand" part made me cry out of nowhere and in a manner I didn't expect 😖
Oh goodness! The remorse, grief and guilt you feel from this song. The misunderstanding. ☹ I think it’s called Sawzall because it cuts you so deep in your soul! The kids voices are a nice touch. It reminds me of how we’re all just children on the inside. ~~ I donate my Love. I gave you nothing. I understand.
Why didn’t you tell me how you felt that day? How was I supposed to know? I can’t mind read Looking back I see the meaning Wish I asked more!!!!! Why didn’t you say you need me? Why don’t you say what you mean?
To me , this song could be about a friend that you loved dearly that committed suicide or attempted to and you’re just lost & confused because you thought you two were super close and you’re just wondering what signs you missed when they seemed so happy all the time . I can apply this to my own life when I’m battling depression and smiling on the outside but crying on the inside and none of my friends know the extent of the pain I deal with . Always check on your “happy friends”. Been listening nonstop for days and I keep coming up with so many scenarios how so many people could relate to these simple yet meaningful lyrics , to the person with a terminally ill family member that passed while seeming okay the day before to the person that has a best friend or family member battling depression but seems happy on the outside . Just reminds me to never judge a book by its cover but still love even if the person receiving the love doesn’t see it as valuable . I donate my love 💕.
I also imagined it being from the perspective of perhaps parents that lose their children to suicide. Very powerful stuff. Perhaps more of a self-insert than how it was originally intended but still this kind of interpretation is why I love Banks' work. There's her intention but also enough space to put in how you feel and have it resonate with you in a completely different yet very meaningful way.
[Intro] That's pretty [Verse 1] I go over every word you said to me Every single syllable I could repeat Certified to scuba dive in my memory Why didn’t you tell me how you felt that day? How was I supposed to know? I can't mind read How was I supposed to see? It was underneath [Chorus] Caught you singing from the ceiling I thought that meant you were healing Looking back, I see the meaning I didn't notice the teething Why didn’t you say you need me? (Why don't you say what you mean?) (I told you I'm sorry, I know you are) [Verse 2] Shoulda read into you drifting from your friends But you were the apple of both of my eyes So I couldn't see the signs, baby, I was blind Miss being self-conscious, why you laughed at me Said it was embarrassing, but secretly It made me feel special when I saw you smile 'cause of me [Chorus] Caught you singing from the ceiling I thought that meant you were healing Looking back I see the meaning wish I asked more I didn't notice the teething Why didn't you say you need me? (Why don't you say what you mean?) (I told you I’m sorry, I know you are) [Bridge] I donate my love I donate my I do-, I donate my love [Outro] I gave you nothing I understand, I understand I gave you nothing
I donte my love, I donate my love, I do, I donate my love, I gave you nothing, I understand, I understand, I gave you nothing. Most powerful part of the whole song!
Ok soooo... This is my favorite song on the album. I have literally not stopped listening to it since it dropped. I legit haven't been to sleep yet, LOL! It made me cry when I first heard it and now I wish I had the back story and thought process behind her lyrics. I am feeling them deeply. I'm in love... Banks killed this album!
I agree! I'd love to know what some of her phrases in this song mean.. although I do think I get the general idea what this song is about. :) This is my favorite on the album too! If We Were Made of Water is 2nd!
@@jessp6290 Yes same for me too. I get that general idea but I want to know the "person" that those lyrics were created for and that is my number 2 song as well. This whole album is a vibe.
"Sawzall’ was the first song that I wrote with that and I was like - [she gasps dramatically] -'what’s this new energy!?‘ It’s singing about something that’s quite heavy; looking back on a relationship and thinking ‘maybe we didn’t break up because we weren’t right for each other, maybe you were depressed. Why didn’t I see that?’ Rather than this dark, jaded feeling, it’s beautiful, and tender, and pure, and real. There’s no self-hate in that song. I’m so heady, and I’m a perfectionist too - I’m working on that - but I’m really hard on myself. I think kids aren’t so hard on themselves. Before you’ve experienced anything hard like pain, or someone lying - there’s a naïveté and hopefulness before you become a little bit… I don’t like the word jaded! It’s more just real. I wanted to capture some of that tender, naïve romanticism on this album. That’s such a huge part of who I am. I like that this album has a lot of heaviness, and it also has a lot of that really tender, hopeful feeling" -Banks
At this point I have listened to the whole album 20 actual times all the way through but, Ms @hernameisBANKS If it’s possible we need a extended version to ( Sawzall ) that end part should have been repeated multiple times. Wow I’m blown away, some music just touches you. ❤️
Shared this with someone once before. Dont even think they understood what this song meant. Ironic enough huh haha. But truly, this song has so many layers to it. So thankful i discovered this rare gem.
1:29-2:11 … it’s been half a decade and this sequence still guts me. Sometimes I hear songs and can’t believe they came out of a human’s mind and spirit. This is one of those.
Feel like this was her “Someone New” for the the album. It’s one of those of those songs I’ll lay in bed & probably cry to. Jillian doesn’t play girl 💪🏼💪🏼
BANKS your art is a very precious gift to our souls. For that i thank you very very much. With each song you are able to speak to our souls and fill it with different kinds of energy which is sooo amazing. Girl YOU ARE A LEGEND!

i'm still obsessed about this song after so many years

Certified to scuba dive in my memory

Why don't you say what you mean?
I told you I'm sorry
I know you are
Shoulda read into you drifting from your friends
But you were the apple of both of my eyes
So I couldn't see the signs

Miss being self-conscious why you laughed at me
Said it was embarrassing but secretly
It made me feel special when I saw you smile cause of me
Caught you singing from the ceiling
I thought that meant you were healing
Looking back I see the meaning wish I asked more
I didn't notice the teething
Why didn't you say you need me?
Why don't you say what you mean!?
I told you I'm sorry
