  • This is the story of how I planted soybeans for the purpose of attracting deer to my property. You will see the battles I win and my lose in this video, but in the end, I won the war and am personally sold on this method in the future.
    Something I fail to mention in the video is how important soil testing is. It's not as important to beans as it is to corn, but nonetheless, get your soil tested and apply the needed nutrients. The reason I forgot about this is because quite honestly, I don't do it. The soil in my river bottoms is so rich, that I think that is why I can get away without soil testing. I'm not recommending this practice in any way, so please do your homework on soil testing!

    I’m in SE KY we get frost late Oct, we plant brassicas in early to mid sept. This year due to hay harvest we planted brassicas on sept 14th, day after finishing the hay harvest off our fields. We plant have cereal grain mix on one side of fields and brassicas mix on other half and rotate those two yearly.

    I plant Enlist soybeans and that water hemp doesn't stand a chance! You will always have lots of weed pressure having wide rows. More sunlight equals more weeds. I plant short maturity soybeans so my beans turn yellow in August. This way I can broadcast my brassica mix over the whole field. But I also broadcast my beans because they canopy fast and I only spray once and there won't be a single weed in my plots!

    • @oxford821
      @oxford821 3 года назад

      Hi, do you run a chain drag over them after your broadcast or leave them ontop?

    • @matthewkubik3874
      @matthewkubik3874 3 года назад

      @@oxford821 Yes. Although some beans will grow in top if the weather is wet. When it is dry every bean on top will most likely not survive. Beans are very tolerant and can be planted from 1/4 inch deep down to 1.5 inches. I also try to shoot for 200,000 seeds per acre for my seeding rate. Beans are also tolerant in seeding rate and will yield the same whether they are seeded at 130,000 seeds per acre all the way up to 200,000. I shoot for 200 because beans are cheap and when you harrow/ drag them in you wont get every seed under the soil.

    Use crossbow 3 weeks before you plant with roundup. Not glyphosate (aftermarket) brands. This will kill a lot of this plants that Glyphosate won't kill.

    Nice job. Have you tried broadcasting oats/rye into the standing beans just before the start turning yellow?

    • @EFactorOutdoors
      @EFactorOutdoors  3 года назад

      That won’t work well because the seeds will germinate from the damp soil but then they won’t get sunlight needed to grow.
      If you have rows of bare dirt like u do in this video, then of course you can broadcast oats/rye anytime.

    • @kyletainter
      @kyletainter 3 года назад +1

      @@EFactorOutdoors not sure how well oats would do but winter rye would do very well broadcasted when bean leaves are yellow. Nice green up the next spring when deer really need it as well. Overall love this idea and might incorporate it into my rotation next year. I'm doing the same thing as you this year but with corn instead of beans. So far so good. Going to be seeding brassicas in the next 2 weeks.

    If you have a newer Iphone......take a pic of the weeds. Then go to your photos to look at the picture you took. There will be an icon at the bottom of the letter i with a circle around it and a couple stars. Touch that. Then you'll see 'Look up Plant'. Touch that and it will tell you what kind of weed it is. Maybe you can get info on how to kill it. I know back to at least iphone 11 will do this. This works will all leaves...trees...etc.

    • @EFactorOutdoors
      @EFactorOutdoors  Год назад

      Dude! That’s awesome! I had no idea you could do that.
      I actually do have an app I think I had to pay for callled ‘picture this’ that identifies plants and trees also but I had no idea my phone already had those capabilities. Thanks for sharing!
      Ok back to the task on hand. Turns out the weed is waterhemp and is glyphosate (round up) resistant. 2-4D kills it easy but most beans will also die with 2-4d.
      There are special kinds of beans that can take 2-4d and I am going to get those this year, but I fear they don’t be quite as attractive to the deer. We will see!!

      @@EFactorOutdoors Good luck. And thanks for the tip on Milogranite. First time I'd heard of that. I had been avoiding Soybeans on a small food plot because I kept hearing soybeans won't work on small plots because the deer mow them down before it can get established. FYI.....Walmart has a sale on Miligrante as we speak. $16.98 for a 32lb bag.
