I raised a coturnix quail from an egg once. It grew up to be a female and so was nearly silent. A beak far less dangerous than a parakeet. She would come when I called. I let her have time out of her cage every day, to roam around the kitchen and eat bugs if she could find them. She laid an egg per day! She once sought out where I was sitting just to lay an egg next to me. I miss her.

i never considered these painted quail as indoor pets but I think I will. I was planning Japanese and possibly california quail as outdoor pets. Might have to copy your setup :)
I have just 4 coturnix quail, 1 rooster and 3 hens, and they will make the quietest little chirps all day long, but you have to be in the same room as them to hear it. The rooster does crow occasionally, but not even necessarily daily, it's pretty infrequent. I did have another male I had to give away as he was getting violent, and before I gave him away I had to move him into a cage by himself, and he crowed ceaselessly. He would wake me up many times during the night, even. It was quite a problem. But I chalk that up to his being alone, probably if he had some hens with him, he would have been much quieter, but alas, his behavior did not permit it. When the hens lay an eggs they also make a noise for that, but you have to be fairly close by to hear it. So they don't really make any noise that should be loud enough to disturb neighbors. I guess maybe if you are in an apartment or condo with really thin walls it could become a problem, but if you have proper sound-proofing between units, or if you are detatched housing, nobody outside of your unit will ever hear them. They are very messy though. I actually do poop clean up multiple times a day, because I really want to minimize the frequency of full bedding changes. If you have the luxury of being able to clean up 3 or 4 times a day, just a few minutes each time, it helps your bedding go a long, long way. Plus it gives you more chances to observe, and maybe even play with, your quail. I have discovered through such frequent observation and interaction that each of my little quaily friends has a very distinctive personality!
I have tip for you bro. Use coconut fibre as bedding. Make is very slightly damp (not wet). It does not fly out the cage like woodchips, also it absorbs the poops and stops any smell. You rarely have to clean it out... Like a deep litter method. It also does not stick to the birds toes and is easy for them to walk on.
i have a japanese quail and many coturnix quails too they do make this noise but they only make it when they are alone or in the breeding season. there is also an advantage because once my quails escaped from the cage and flew away from our house but the male was left alone so he started chirping and i went out to save him

I live in a upstairs flat and was considering getting a single female quail I think they're cool and cute and their poop is great fertilizer but I'm just not sure due to the morning and night chirping would it really be that big of a issue?
I have Japanese and the males noise freaks me out which is fine but they smell so bad I have to change the cage bottom every day and wipe it. I am thinking of getting a smaller species and giving the Japanese back (they’re from my friend who has them on a farm and he has button too)
nice video. Very useful. I got 3 quails and made a cage for them. Do they need to get sun? I can move the cage around the house so I can put them on the balcony for sun bathing if it's good for them. Other question please, Do you recommend to give greens and veggies? If so, how often. Thank you and God bless you and your family.
Preferably they need direct sunlight. It's good for them and necessary for vitamin D production. If this is not possible you can give them a healthy diet with indeed fruits and vegetables with a little bit of extra vitamines especially vitamin D. I feed fruits and vegetables 2 a 3 times a week. Hope this helps
Here is a true account of what occurred today.. I decided to take my quail to a local green space because the weather was nice,,,, She sat for a while playing with me then began panting as the sun was out and she was clearly getting too warm,, Then she stood still with her head up scanning our surroundings for a good 20 seconds then headed towards an area with trees and shrubs, In any normal scenario the owner would try to hinder her fearing her escape or a threat from a predator yet as we both have a really strong mutual relationship i merely followed her,,,,,,, She sat down calmly under the shade of a tree and glanced up at me, So I fetched the blanket and my bag moving them to where she was and we sat together in the shade for an hour or so just chilling.... SHE ISNT A PET and my ability to experience her intelligence in such a manner is due to the fact that i do not approach our relationship as if she is a pet....! You will only ever interpret reality from the depth or shallowness of your being,, thus You will only ever get from life the limits of what you feel exist and 90% of the population allow others to dictate what exists for them....FACT!
Yes... The males are extremely loud and persistent in their croaking unless they are with the females . They are very messy and their droppings are also higher in ammonia... You need to be constantly cleaning.
@@MrAviary I actually just gotten five more females for my two males so the females will not be chased around too much and get overly stressed out. Anyway quails are lovely pets and adorable to observe, I do get lots of eggs but my intention is purely to just have them as pets.
I heard that if you add a little Apple cider vinegar to their water it helps with the ammonia smell and it’s good for them. I don’t have the exact measurement though but you should look it up.
They are not Messy at all!! I use dry straw and hay so nothing flies around when they burst into flight and i have bobwhite that like to fly and perch on trees
I think around 3 weeks old they can pretty much without parents. Its mostly the cold which will kill them for the rest they can do anything themself from hatching.

But button quails make a great beginner bird or apartment pet.
Totally agree 👍
I hatched out 18 quail they are amazingly messy. i have to pressure wash their poop tray twice a day and shop vac there room once a day.
In what size cage?
I thought thought they were extinct as where I lived you could see them everyday after 1990 no more.
I live in a upstairs flat and was considering getting a single female quail I think they're cool and cute and their poop is great fertilizer but I'm just not sure due to the morning and night chirping would it really be that big of a issue?
Most of the time a female alone won't make that much noise
I have coturnix quail. Some outside and some inside. My inside birds are pets. I have 2 tux marked. A male and female.
That's so cool
Thanks!
Thank you so much, really appreciate it.
If you're planning to keep them inside, they'll make your room smell like a chicken coop. Best to raise them outside after they've fully feathered.
We’re hatching 14 mixed quail eggs now they’ll hatching two weeks 😊 already have 24 chickens 😂
That's a lot of quails 😆
You could attach sound dampening g panels on the roof of the cage to lower the noise a bit
Maybe a bit, worth trying
Large egg boxes the tray kind would work as well
I have Japanese and the males noise freaks me out which is fine but they smell so bad I have to change the cage bottom every day and wipe it.
Hi! Where did you bought the white cage? It looks great! :))
I made them myself, in another video, I show more how the cage is build.
Can you have a single quail or do they get lonely?
I would prefer 2, however I have seen people keep one quail but they spend a lot of time with them and they were very tame.
Can you let them out in your backyard sometimes...or will they fly away? :-)
They will burst up to fly away. They will not come far but can get really high
Will they not run away? How high can they fly
thanks
Quails are cute ☺️ but they can be quiet messy, because they nest in the soil and sand 😅
And poop a lot
@@MrAviary AGREED 👍
would a couple of female button quail be quiet in an appartment and do you think clay kitty litter would make a good ground cover for them
They are Indeed relatively quiet. No I won't use kitty litter. Just sand or wood chips, especially sand is even cheaper
New here but the ones in this video are the button quails? Or the bigger quails?
I have a wery cute quail💗💙💚❤💓💓💓
All quails are cute
Yes they are very messy and loud mine are only 3 days old 14 hatched.
Are quails worth having as pets ?
Big yes !
Agree
Very messy how? The shavings getting everywhere? They dont poop too much do they
I raised 10 quails together from the moment they hatched, when they grew up they straight up started murdering each other,
You definitely keep the males seperated, but the females can really by bit....es as well.
Where did you get your cage from its really nice
I build it myself.
@@MrAviary wonderful! Great design! I love the ramp
Still less mess than my guinea pigs make around their cage 😂 in 2 days
Haha, they can be very messy
Very informative!! thank you
Thanks for the support
I love quails they are fuking round
Are you by any chance from the Netherlands?
Yes I am
That’s cleaner then my quail cage 🤨🤨
Must quails live in cages? I have a small well planted garden completely enclosed within five foot walls. Can quails fly over them?
Yes they can easily burst fly 10 feet high and they will. They are very skittish
Hello, ay I ask you where you get these board for the ladders, with the notches? Thank you
Made it myself with small saw and file, every single notch
Do the female Japanese quails make a noise or just the males?
The females also make noises but less loud as the males
I love quail baby
Me too 😍
I ate their eggs with salted and they are delicious I mean in China And it's cooked it's delicious
nice
Thanks 😊
Hey they can drown if you put the quail food too near to water
Yes... The males are extremely loud and persistent in their croaking unless they are with the females . They are very messy and their droppings are also higher in ammonia... You need to be constantly cleaning.
True, they are very persistent in finding a female. and you need to clean them every week, definitely if you keep them indoors.
@@MrAviary I actually just gotten five more females for my two males so the females will not be chased around too much and get overly stressed out. Anyway quails are lovely pets and adorable to observe, I do get lots of eggs but my intention is purely to just have them as pets.
@@krischang4653 Agree
I heard that if you add a little Apple cider vinegar to their water it helps with the ammonia smell and it’s good for them. I don’t have the exact measurement though but you should look it up.
@@everising4999 I also give them apple cider vinegar for their health, never noticed a difference. Never really tested it.
Amazing
Thanks
They are not Messy at all!! I use dry straw and hay so nothing flies around when they burst into flight and i have bobwhite that like to fly and perch on trees
I have japanese quails😊
Nice 😊
Thanks 👍
I think I'd be wearing gloves doing that man.
are they suitable for first time pet owners?
Yes they are pretty easy. You just have to clean them often and be aware they they can be very skittish do approach with care
Could you sound proof a room to make that sound less annoying to other people? I don't mind there noises but worried about other ppl
Yes, I think if your room is relatively sound proof you wont annoy any people.
I’m wondering if I can keep them in a small space.
They are not doing well in small cages
My first quail was not messy and It was very quiet my second quails were . messy and loud
Do they really only live 2 and a half years! This so short!
No, they do live longer than that, on average 5 years
@J M 2 yrs may refer to their life in the wild.
So that’s what the hell that is?!! So very annoying (the sounds). We have them all over the place here but I am awakened and hear on the daily!
Now you know. Do neighbours have them or they wild ones?
I live in AZ and they are wild and sometimes roam backyards
how do button quail relate to mice?
I cant get quails but i am soon moowing out😁😁😁😁😀😁😀
Can you keep button quail and coturnix quail together?
If the aviary is large enough yes. At the moment I have a button qual and jungle bush quail together
How old are they to fly away?? And they can look after themselves??
I think around 3 weeks old they can pretty much without parents. Its mostly the cold which will kill them for the rest they can do anything themself from hatching.
Are the wood shivers necessary?
It soaks up the water better
@@MrAviary ooh, i see. Thank you 😊, I'm researching before getting a quail
@@aldlkj That's the best thing you could do.
@@MrAviary thanks 😊 and thanks for helping me with that
How long does the calling sound last?
Depends some only once or twice, somethimes couple of minutes
Hi,nice too meet you.

Idon't have Japanese puail.
Do you king quails feeding?
check my other videos
I have 5 button quail and they were sitting on eggs and only just abandoned them.
That's too bad. Hope they will try again and succeed. Do you have an idea why they abandoned their eggs?
@@MrAviary maybe too many because the other females were laying in that nest too
Yes quails, don't like other quails around their nest. Maybe remove some of them so you have more succes.
@@MrAviary maybe, I do have another cage but I have no where to put it
Scuffed maybe a shed or garage in my opinion
