Flying North was a song that only 1 in 100 guys would ever treasure. I was one of those 1 in 100. Like I never knew one other guy in the 80's who came up to me and said "Did you hear the Flying North song! It is sent straight from the gods of music." However, I saw it as being one of the most powerful and beautiful songs that I have ever heard. I would be happy if I was stuck in it forever.
Love this track, & as much as I love Windpower ,this was the one that got played over & over again . went on every mix tape & I still love it to this day.
That's 'ME' at the 3 minute mark...doing a Phil Oakey impression for whatever reason I have no recollection of. BIG fan of the TD Band - RIP Matt Seligman! I think this show was recorded at London's Riverside Studios....and I've just bought tickets for Mr Dolby's London Show in August (2024). My favourite song of this era is 'Windpower'...heard it played for the first time at a soundcheck at The Marquee Club and it raised hairs on the back of my neck! Wonderfully innovative, inspiring, and influential musician. 🕺
those who love techno-rock! being a military man, I often visit crafts, ships, airborne things, subs and all those, and match the identical sounds from TD tunes! Like while I am in a taxiway, I never miss the time to hum, here comes the man in suits! I pity those who don't know this nice man!
When looking back, the music Thomas Dolby made is timeless. One of the greatest artists, not only of his generation but tout courts. As producer too fabulous work
Metal bird dip wing of fire Whose airlanes comb dark Earth The poles are tethers we were born in On the brink of a whole new deal On the floor of a hotel bar I'm staring right into the light And I'm drawn in like a moth And I'm flying north again Here come the men in suits Papers waving in the runway glare Lincoln streaming in the chilly air of the morning At the end of a double day At the back of an airport lounge I'm staring down into the cold And I'm worn out like a cloth And I'm flying north again tonight Down with the landing gear Up goes the useless prayer The poles are tethers we were born in Now I'm back in the London night On a bench in a launderette I'm staring right into my face And I'm drawn out like a plot And I'm flying north again tonight
When I finally heard the original UK release of The Golden Age of Wireless, I understood that it is a masterpiece. The various versions that got published in the US and elsewhere after the popularity of She Blinded Me... and One of Our Sub's broke the mold of the genius grooves (one on each side) that Dolby created in his own mind and studio. The special edition CD is a treasure trove. ❤️
He did pretty well. Not sad. He made piles of dough from inventing the tech used for flip phone ringtones. At some point i’m sure he had other priorities than being famous. Maybe he had a family & wanted a more normal job?
@@sub-jec-tivExactly the comment I was going to make! Those of us old enough know he's the bloody genius that took the chip to Nokia and we can thank him for having tunes on those old phones! He's great and still does shows to promote equipment and music gear. Love Thomas Dolby!
I flew north from LA to Portland in my car countless times with this tune blasting as if some type of blessing. Don’t think that I could be heading north on I-5 without this.
One of the best songs on one of the best albums from that decade.

👆
I play this on my headphones at the airport. It's best when taking off.
This is absolutely in my top 5 favorite songs to blast into my ears on takeoff 🛫
One of my favourite keyboard riffs from the 80s. This track is pure genius...
That Jupiter 8 sound is just amazing....! 👍👏
One of my favorite albums ever . I’ve owned it since the early 80s and still love it
PERFECT. He makes human beings look good. If more of this guy it would be a race worth saving said the alien.👽👽👽
This. Listen to his lyrics on Windpower, i wish everyone felt that way about the future.
Musical genious ahead of his time.
This artist is criminally underrated, yet summarily appreciated among my peers!
Love this tune, Wish the "Flying Noooorth.." harmony was in there, That would have nailed it!
Me too! That would have been the clincher!!!
Still got this full concert on VHS
AAA Thomas Dolby is still the man!
Is he a AAA battery though.? 😂Yes he is a musical gem..have just been enjoying Hyperactive the video while Thomas plays the trumpet with his nose! 😂
Love this track, & as much as I love Windpower ,this was the one that got played over & over again . went on every mix tape & I still love it to this day.
Love this song.
I used to work for Pan Am in the Eighties hence my sincere love for this song...

Pop music for smart people. God I love him. :o)
Beautiful!
I miss the 80's.
This brings back memories of my teens my best bud and late nights listening to this amazing album good times 😊
Always loved this B side. Nice harmonizing.
I've loved this guy's music for decades and there are no two ways about it, music is the best in Thomas Dolby surround sound 🧡
0:34 when he hits that keyboard classic Dolby

THIS IS NOT TECHNO, it’s synthpop.
@@debralarue2596 hm in japan, it was also called techno pop, thanks to yellow magic orchestra. man i would pay to see those synth giants collaborate
Flying north felt so good. Chorus sings flying north...... Still sounds like a good idea.
Why.....I ask why has this not been pressed on vinyl yet?!??
You're late to the party...used to borrow this from the local library; good days- needs to be repressed is what!
it was pressed on Laserdisc, DVD, and recorded on Beta and VHS tapes.

❤I remember listening to his album The Golden Age of Wireless on Vinyl when it was released in I think 1984 This was my favorite ❤
I remember seeing this extended video on MTV back in the day-great stuff!
Loved this album when it came out, love it now.
SG2000 THE guitar of the eighties:)
One of my favorite TD songs has great sound to it
Genius!
Genius
i love this version, kind of highlighting the synth rather than the dense 808 drums.
Metal bird dip wing of fire
Whose airlanes comb dark Earth
The poles are tethers we were born in
On the brink of a whole new deal
On the floor of a hotel bar
I'm staring right into the light
And I'm drawn in like a moth
And I'm flying north again
Here come the men in suits
Papers waving in the runway glare
Lincoln streaming in the chilly air of the morning
At the end of a double day
At the back of an airport lounge
I'm staring down into the cold
And I'm worn out like a cloth
And I'm flying north again tonight
Down with the landing gear
Up goes the useless prayer
The poles are tethers we were born in
Now I'm back in the London night
On a bench in a launderette
I'm staring right into my face
And I'm drawn out like a plot
And I'm flying north again tonight
Thanks.
Glad I didn't get Mind Washed..Thanx. Did you ever see him in concert?
A trusted adjutant to the thin white duke
grettings from Venezuela. it s that true tha t this song is about the model of the aircraft from the Andes disaster?

A musical genius , only known for a silly novelty hit on MTV , sad 😥
He did pretty well. Not sad. He made piles of dough from inventing the tech used for flip phone ringtones. At some point i’m sure he had other priorities than being famous. Maybe he had a family & wanted a more normal job?
He's not known only for...
Plus, it's not a silly novelty, it's pop genius.
