You guys have no idea how many memories are flooding back working on the Holden red engines. That engine sounds so sweet. You can't believe how much I smiled through this video. It's just so good to see an old engine going again. It just makes you wonder why today's engines are so complicated!
It used to be so much fun working on the old Red motors. Even in the small Toranas, you seemed to have so much room to work. In modern cars, it's so hard to access a lot of areas. I just can't be bothered. 😮
Do you live in Perth?
@@MrBrowne86 no i don't.
There is a lot of good to be said of the easy simplicity of old Holdens and doing self repair work.Great work lads,it is awesome.
The look on your faces when it fired and the OHHHHHHHHHH was just priceless..amasing job guys comming together perfectly
It's been fun watching you two work your way around old school mechanics. No plug in scanner to help tune the Engine. Just a timing light, spanners and a screwdriver. Not even a hydraulic clutch system to use.
Man the memories. I’m sure I am one of many MANY older blokes who are seeing themselves back in the shed again with the old man as a kid. I cut my teeth on these and one of the first things Dad taught was tuning by ear. The old HG running gear outlived the shell, rust was the only reason I don’t have it anymore. The look on your faces when it idled under its own steam was bloody mint. Loving this build, warts and all
I'm getting closer and closer to getting my HR on the road. Episodes like this inspire me
STRAYA 👍
Congrats guys, been a long time since I've heard a old red motor start.
Wait till exhaust goes on , you will hardly hear it ticking over.
So happy for you.
I love it when a plan comes together! Well done fellas.
You can't keep a good old Aussie 6 Cylinder down, they just work, simple as 👍👍
Years ago they used the Holden 6 Trymatic to turn the barrels on concrete trucks and they worked hard all day every day good engine.
We’ll done guys, 161 are a great motor
Congratulations and what memories it bought back of back yard engine changes. 🎉🎉🎉
Well done boys! Super proud of you
My first car was a HG sedan, I disconnected the exhaust one weekend to hear the 186 roar. Wicked.
Those clutch linkages were rooted 40 years ago.
Couldn’t keep the smile off my face. Well done boys 👍🏻
Great episode boys, love the little 161.
What a gem ❤
awesome. inspired to get in the shed and get my 186 running now. great success!
that 161 had the power to tear your zipties to shreds.
Well done boys. Great work
Like a sewing machine! That orange rebuild worked a treat!
My first car was an HB Torana, and my friends used to rib me by saying the engine was smaller than a sewing machine. 😆
G'day,
What an awesome video. I totally enjoyed it. But you'll have to get a patent for those 1000KW rated tailshaft clamps. 🤭
Q. The fuel pump. Someone might be able to donate an original glass bowl fuel pump. That will complete the period look of the engine.
Word of the day
Great success.
Thanks for sharing guys ✌️ Peace from Melbourne/Pakenham 3810.
Great success boys the zip tie uni bolts it’s fantastic 👌🏻
Good fun lads I did my apprentiship on these engines and built many in the 70s drag cars etc. All good fun and simple Au engineering
Thanks
Good job lads!
Always satisfying 🤪
My first car was HG ute my Grandpa bought brand new with the 186. Love the nostalgia for me. I've recently bought a HG ute to recreate the experience soooo great tips here for me.
Watching you guys with the red motor brings back memories of working on my 186’s Monaro in the early 70’s. Simple to work on and lots of fun as the mods, repairs come together… enjoying your work 😊👍
I remember tieing a rope to the axle and a brick on the other end ….pegging the brick….and…happy days. Axle out.😂😂😂
I’ll be sad to see the HG leaving 😢
Cable ties work quite well for flat uni bolts just singles on my tonner spent 1 year driving in and out of my shop while i was getting it ready for rego
The mighty red motor really is underappreciated i still daily a 202 in my tonner makes me happy starting it every morning
Fricken awesome! So many memories of older times. It wasn't uncommon to drive around sitting on a milk crate for a seat, even with the doors off!
Great episode! Go the red 6!
Arrrrg Now I have get a Holden with a red six, good on you pelicans
Shes a runner!
Awesome ep gents. Thanks for the chat today Nath! Cheers boys. 'Great success'
Great success in getting the HG moving under her own steam!
So awesome big smileys all round 💪😁
Needs the old school glass fuel bowl... but apart from that, nice work... Great Success
Great Success!! Was fun seeing Loki the shed pupper back for an episode
Happy days all-round. Giddyup, nice to have success.
When it come to tightening the rocker cover, quarter of a turn before the bolts break
Great job fellas, nice hearing the 161 running
What a ripper job boys 👍 loved it
Its looked good to
We got our ht ute running driving and stopping then entered it in a car show haha
Well done boys.
Can supply the factory’s OEM Sevice and Parts guides for the HK HT HG series all in PDF if needed. On my Dropbox Account, will edit this post tomorrow and add the URL. Nice work guys!
Great episode boys, such a great success. Im wondering if you leave it 161 and save the 308 for something else 🤔 Slam it on the whitewalls😁
Get a slide hammer to pull out the seals next time it will be much easier
Faaarrk.. I have blown up a bottle of diff oil !! Went off like a bomb 😂 I get ptsd now every time
Haha not gunna lie, always scared of doing that
Good job, Fellas. But I have to ask. Did you get the brake booster plumbed up, then make sure no vacuum leaks? Then, after it warmed up, check the IGN timing? And was there a temporary oil pressure gauge used? That's just simple stuff I'd do to make sure any catastrophe could be avoided. Red 6's are not that hard. Start - up is a stressful time ! Cheers
Hey mate, none of the above except, we do look at all that in next weeks episode though
Does kingchrome not have an axle puller ?
Be so much easier and less likely to damage anything 😁
hey fellas, love the woprk you guys do, really interested to see that handbrake as im building a HK and has a return spring on the arm, coming off the cross member, does hg not have that?? thanks fellas
We have most likely missed it and not put it on haha
If you just keep screwing the self tapper in the seal will pop out!
🍺👍🏻👏
Do not, my friends, become addicted to Aerostart. It will take hold of you, and you will resent its absence! 😁😁
Boys do you think no bund plug in the fuel pump might have gave it a good vacuum to pull the fuel that quick?? Well bloody
Yeah we do, turned out to be a happy accident in the end haha
@@HackshopGarage good hack for future projects 👍🏼
ahh, the red motor, perhaps the easiest engine in history
First
Guys, I love watching you, however, I’ve got to ask. Why don’t you use any of the tools that you were given? Both hubby and I cringe whenever we see you using a tool that’s not meant to be used… please guys….. use the right tools for the right job…. Other than that, We love what you guys do, keep it up…
186s engine was the better one I never really liked the HG or HT or HK …. EH holdens we’re the only ones I’ve owned much better car
