Haruka’s mom is gorgeous and she seems like such a lively and cute person. I was so glad that Haruka cited Black American pop culture as influences as well!
Gyarus have been citing it as part of their influence...this video even shows all the old releases of Egg magazine from two decades ago where Black American celebrities were presented as fashion influences. Any gyaru should mention how this was part of the influence, in addition to other aesthetics and cultures. ✌
honestly the divide between shirogyaru and kurogyaru never crossed my mind mainly because i'm a gyaru with brown skin without tanning, so i never had to think about it! but this was so interesting to see! amazing video as always !!!!!!!
I saw this on tiktok but also there was this thing back in the day where different hair tones may signify a divide, which may not cross the mind if you have brown skin. Many girls in the 90s (at least in the west) would dye their hair blonde bc of Brittney, so it is funny to see the same things reflect in gyaru and decora -- trying to look like your idol
i think this has to do with the tradtion aspect of japanese culture wanting white skin so dying the skin dark was still kind of a reason to divide, i think this had to do more with japanese gyaru then actual black gyaru
I appreciate kurogyaru so much. I'm a darker skin asian and I wear gothic fashion and gothic makeup but a lot of asian gothic makeup tutorials are aimed at those with very pale skin so it never works out as well for my skin tone. Then I started looking up makeup tutorials by kurogyaru like egg models, Choppa, Usatani, etc and incorporating kurogyaru makeup into my gothic makeup and it's turning out so much better!
wow i feel so enlightened hearing the history of yamanba being it's own thing and not considered a style of gyaru, it's crazy how quickly things like that are forgotten/how quickly misconceptions take hold. thanks for doing these interviews they are always so interesting!!

Absolutely Adorable 💞 I luvvvv the look of all the outfits , hair & makeup! I've seen the Japanese girls wearing this on Pinterest and it's too cute . The look has always reminded me of a collaborative design of Hello Kitty / Jersey Shore / Blonde white girl Barbie with extravagant makeup! Luvvv it all . Anyone no matter race /color wearing this look will be fabulous and have fun looking super cute . Most of my family has natural blonde hair with either blue or green eyes and some of these girls bleaching their hair and putting in huge green contacts look like they could be at one of my family reunions ! I hope this look stays forever 💕
I'm Canadian, in my 40s, and I was always interested in gyaru and other alternative J-fashion styles (as an observer) back in the early 2000s - so this was super fascinating for me to watch! Thanks so much for posting it. It is interesting to me that チョベリグ was originally a gyaru slang term. I've actually said that to people, mostly to be funny, for decades now. I read it in a magazine back in the 90s - I think it was Seventeen magazine. They claimed it was something "young cool kids in Japan" said. They never mentioned anything about gyaru or any kind of subculture. I didn't find out about that until several years later. I was really into anything about Japan (still am) so I picked it up and never really stopped saying it. 😂
Just randomly watched this video. I couldn't stop watching it, from start to end. It was very good. I became interested in Japan from the age of 4 or 5, so this made me very nostalgic. I kind of wish I could go back in time and experience Japan at this time. Not everything was all rainbows but just very different. This was very fun and informative. Thanks!
I love that back in the day, even yamanba and manba were too extreme in the eyes of the gyaru xD Great video, really enjoyed it! Really enjoyed the energy of the three of you. Wish Emi would have elaborated a bit on ganguro (like mid-nineties to late nineties Buriteri style), it's iconic! I wonder if there was a divide between gyaru and ganguro groups as well.
This video is very interesting! I always thought magazine scans from 2004-2008 looked very inspired by those 2000s video vixens in a lot of hip-hop and r&b music videos from the states.
I love fashion so much ! I would describe my style as the fashion trends in 2014 - 2017 well if I actually had the clothes I wanted ofc but I just love seeing other people being so confident enough to go all out with their fashion
i really love what your videos are doing for the jfashion community! they are so informative and entertaining. they are also so great because you hear from so many different perspectives, and people. this video was especially interesting to hear from a gyaru in the 90s! i really enjoy this series! keep up the good work!!
Informative video and interesting trend. I remember seeing this online in the early 2000s but it barely registered a blip here in the US at the time unless you sought out information.
This was SUCH a great interview!!!!! Thanks!!!!! m( _ _ )m As a white (technically latina but) woman who got into gyaru back in the heyday of agejo and hime and popularization of shiro (abt late 00s as a hs student in love with Kana Nishino style lol) but never considered herself a "gaijin gyaru" per se (though I have always incorporated gyaru stuff in my own style !!) it's so interesting to me how our thoughts on gyaru seem to be aligned though we are from different generations and places. Like I would agree that Doja Cat has a "modern gyaru" style (super inspiring too !!) and is more gyaru than Baywatch and yamanba wasn't gyaru (because they had "rules" for makeup and clothes and their intent was different) and so on ... also on sexyness - people seem to associate it with "lewdness" when it should be more like "freedom" . Personally as an asexual person who really likes gyaru I don't think about it in terms of sex appeal at all but rather being cute and fun :) 💖💕 and it did teach me to be more appreciative of my wavy brown hair in ways that, ironically, western media didn't! Just when it was getting good it was cut though so I am hoping for a sequel if Haruka and her mom are up to it haha ~ Make ur mom become a business gyaru next time Haruka lol Best regards ~
Im sad we will never experience being a gal in the 90s , i feel like they were just feeling it and really BEING a gyaru and really lived the lifestyle . Rn i feel like a lot of ppl are just looking gal but not being them. Also the new gen is just copying the old gen , we dont make anything new like it used to be - something new all the time (new trends that everyone followed, new slang etc) :(

So do gaijin gyaru's also need to know the slang or are they immediate posers? Also, see so many people on tiktok dressing gyaru but it feels costume-y, so I do agree with them to always learn about the history. Also, Will you ever interview a gyaruo because its seems interesting to know about the male version of this subculture. And again, Great video as always. I love to learn more about gyaru!
Honestly, don't think anyone HAS to do anything BUT at the same time gyarugo / gyarumoji are pretty popular and it's easy to find online so I think it's neat to do your research as a gyaru enthusiast :)

IM SO EXCITED
OMG yes !!
Can't wait!!
This is amazing!!! Thank you for the interview....
Informative video and interesting trend. I remember seeing this online in the early 2000s but it barely registered a blip here in the US at the time unless you sought out information.
I LOVE HARUKA SM
I love Haruka w a passion
I love your videos so much, every video u make is so informative and really well made, i get so excited everytime u post 😢💗
haruka is so pretty... such nice hair. im glad to see intergenerational stuff like this
This was SUCH a great interview!!!!! Thanks!!!!! m( _ _ )m
As a white (technically latina but) woman who got into gyaru back in the heyday of agejo and hime and popularization of shiro (abt late 00s as a hs student in love with Kana Nishino style lol) but never considered herself a "gaijin gyaru" per se (though I have always incorporated gyaru stuff in my own style !!) it's so interesting to me how our thoughts on gyaru seem to be aligned though we are from different generations and places.
Loving all the different styles in this video 😍
this video was very entertaining and informational and i watched through the whole thing
another video featuring one of my fav people !!! love u both sm
ive been waiting for this!
WAIIT THIS IS SUCH A COOL COLAB
this video is amazing omgg
I can tell they were doing the "Night On Fire" para para dance in that clip of her n her mom dancing XDDD its ingrained in me
Omg! I love her outfits
Im sad we will never experience being a gal in the 90s , i feel like they were just feeling it and really BEING a gyaru and really lived the lifestyle . Rn i feel like a lot of ppl are just looking gal but not being them. Also the new gen is just copying the old gen , we dont make anything new like it used to be - something new all the time (new trends that everyone followed, new slang etc) :(
same but at least we remix the fashion trends a bit better
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!!!
haruka's mom is so badass
so excited
My two favorite alternative girlies collabin 💕
I LOVE THE 3 OF YALL OMG
I LOVE BOTH OF U SM AHHH
I AGREE WITH YOU !!!
omg I follower her on tik tok and I'm so happy this video got recommend to me!
I love para para and my favorite music genre next to prog Rock is eurobeat
I'm so curious why Tiktok keeps banning Haruka???
Ppl like reporting black creators
@@bass3183 how is she black if her mother is a whole East Asian woman?
@@jesusisapisces her dad is black
@@bass3183 and her mother is Japanese. You wouldn't call her a Japanese woman on the account of having a Japanese parent so why does she get to be black just because her dad is?
@@jesusisapisces never did i deny her being japanese lol? Are u insane? She can be black AND japanese, my point still stands, ppl like reporting black creators out of racism and bc the tiktok algorithm lets it happen
Absolutely love this content
OMG MY TWO FAVORITE RUclipsRS DID A COLLAB AHHHHHHHH
Awwwww❤❤❤ 😊 I feel 15 again seeing Haruka
aw ty for interview!!
OMG MY TWO FAVE PEOPLE
Omg this is such an incredible video!
afer harukas video ive been sent down a gyaru rabbit hole and I find myself so fascianated with the the culture and history of it all despite being a gangly little white boy who decks himself out in spikes and skulls
I love her and her mom!
Haruka looks so cute!
I think the prerequisite (if it was the 2000s) is that you had to be living in Japan and speak Japanese. No idea about the days of Reiwa
I love her! "Basically, we were thugs."🤣
