      Tribes like those are pastoral, and because their diet relies heavily on the cattle they take care of, milk is a major source for nutrition.
      I was born in the States but my family is East African, and I freaking love milk. I also love visiting them and drinking fresh cow's milk from the family farm. It's so rich, that it always takes a bit of getting used to.
      I get bouts of lactose-intolerance now and then, and I just power through it anyway. Once, it lasted from about 6 months to a year (I didn't bother to remember when it started, honestly), and I knew it had to be lactose-intolerance because I didn't change my diet but I kept feeling awful after drinking dairy. I was pissed, honestly, and while I stayed away from cream cheese, I kept drinking milk regularly like I used to.

    Now, on to the subject of lactose intolerance. In what are most likely your target countries- the US, Canada, and the UK- the percentage of lactose intolerant people is much less than the global average. For the US and Canada, the average is below 30%. For the UK, the average is below 15%. This also puts the lactose intolerant in the minority in those countries. The fact that you went to a support group means that the lactose intolerant population in your country is also much lower than 50%, probably actually winding up somewhere closer to- but not above- 20%.

    It should be noted that lactose intolerance is not a binary thing. While there are some people who do indeed completely lack the lactase enzyme (the enzyme that breaks down lactose), this is not always the case. It is not that you either have the enzyme lactase, or you are completely lacking it. Like with most things in biology, lactase persistence exists in varying degrees in people. I am a good example.. I can consume milk. A cup or two gives me no problems. However, if I consume copious amounts of milk, say several times that amount, then I will have gastric distress.
    Secondly, the degree to which you experience digestive discomfort and diarrhea from consuming milk can vary with frequency of exposure. So people who think they are completely lactose intolerance, due to a bad experience, may refrain from milk for a long time. The lactase enzyme, as with a lot of enzymes or hormones, when not triggered by environmental stimulus, down regulates. So when that person, who has abstained from dairy for a long time all of a sudden gets exposed to dairy, his symptoms maybe even worse. As a result, this may reinforce his impression that he truly lacks lactase. However, if he consumes small amounts of dairy, with some degree of frequency, he may find that his symptoms dissipate, and that he does indeed have the lactase enzyme, and can therefore enjoy dairy products. This may explain the inflated 65 percent number of lactose intolerance. This would be the more likely scenario. I have a hard time believing that the number of lactose intolerant people is this large, given how wide spread milk producing cows are in the world, and how long they have existed along side us since the advent of agriculture.

    • @YaraElmjouie
      @YaraElmjouie 5 лет назад

      Drake Santiago Great points Drake! That’s why we say lactose intolerant “to some extent” both at the top of the piece and at the end. That doesn’t mean, say, that the 90% of people in East Asia who are lactose intolerant “to some extent” cannot consume dairy products.
      But it does mean that a lot of people there can’t consume massive amounts of lactose-filled milk/dairy without some digestive discomfort. So one cup may be fine-but two, three, or four may be ... tough.

    Looking at the map of areas where pastoralism has been significantly practiced and looking at the map of areas of lactose persistence shows a pretty clear overlap. Like how melanin provides an advantage depending on UV levels of an environment, lactose persistence can be seen as an adaptation helpful for living in areas with limited fertile soil and lots of land (area suitable for pastoralism).

    I feel like in the future we'll just be able to trigger lactase persistence with crispr, so this won't be such a divisive issue.
    I literally had the opposite timeline of lactose intolerance to the narrator. From roughly 10-20 I started complaining that milk was making me sick, and it was, but I was pretty much addicted to cheese and ice cream, so when I knew I was going to be close to a toilet for the next 6 hours, I'd still imbibe. Eventually, roughly around age 20, it got to the point I could drink a 500ml chocolate milk carton, and it was like the world was right again. Just forcing myself to get used to it actually worked. Nowadays I drink... more than the american average, lol. Roughly 1-1.5 liters a day. Enough that a 2L doesn't usually last 24 hours, but it does sometimes. Each liter is roughly 2.2lbs, so I probably drink about 700lbs a year, 4x the national average nowadays.
