  • This is my first how-to video.
It is a sensitive topic for a lot of people but it needs to be discussed because nobody is discussing it. This is how a compost toilet works for real.

❤thank you for taking the time and effort to share your process. We live off grid now going on 4 yrs, really good to know we're doing our cleaning well and now I know how to compost simply ❤

OMG Thank you for sharing this. We did this with our portable back in the 70's, and I had relatives who still had outhouses. My grandmother had actually made a cover lined with shelf liner to make it easier to spray with Lysol to keep clean and to cap the toilets. They didn't worry about toilet paper either!
I had one relative who used cheap wash cloths and had their washing bucket there with a cap of lysol in some water for the used ones. Guess what I did when Covid made all the paper goods vanish? I grabbed 80 cheap wash clothes and followed suit! It is rather simple thanks to washing machines today. Wash with lysol and hot water, then 2nd wash is with soap. Works great! Yes, I also follow a color system, so I know which cloths are for which. Dark colors - toilet use & cleaning. Medium colors - house cleaning, esp the kitchen, and pale to white - personal for face, etc. If you find you want softer fabric, you will need to cut the wash cloths in half. I used thinned liquid fabric glue to help reduce fraying.
I'm so glad I was shown other ways to handle restroom and personal care where plumbing and certain goods were not common or relied on as much as they are now. Yes, I still follow the wash cloth ritual, finding it to be far more effective at keeping me clean, and TP is now very expensive in the city. I still have TP as back up and for company, because yah, I know it isn't for everyone. As you said, not everyone knows how to handle it.

Good idea on the color coding. I often forget which rags I used for what and it freaks me out. Worry no more 😊. Ty

That is awesome. You are fortunate to have been educated in this area long ago. 99.9999% of the population will not know what to do in a grid down situation. We really don't even want a septic, except just for grey water stuff, and even that is not actually necessary if you reuse gray water for gardening properly.
The color coding is a good idea.

I’m over all this! I’d be wrapping my bucket with a contractor bag and cleaning it out every day by tossing away my poo each day LOL

I've never been in a house with a properly managed dry toilet that smelled at all whatsoever. Even without a diverter. And certainly putting a towel over the hole is insane. And having it in your living room is also insane... that towel?? Jesus.

Dude, I live in a one-room cabin. Where would you expect me to put it? Outside in the 22 degree weather? The towel has a good dampening effect and is a secondary barrier.
      Probably, also, consider your approach.

@tyasteele outside would probably be the best place for it but you might want the seat inside and the box outside. That towel is disgusting... you can buy or make a proper closing lid if your toilet isn't working well but if youre doing it right there should not be any smell after youve added your dry material. I've been in lots of well made and badly made dry toilets and they are night and day. But no matter how well made it will always stink the place up while your using it ..the towel is...well there is a reason why soft fabrics are not used in bathrooms. I would suggest you get a well fitting closing lid and put your box outside your cabin but your seat inside I its too cold for you to go outside ... that way you don't have a bucket of turds in the corner of your room. The vent can be outside and if you design it properly you can close it off even maybe for defences sake build a small closet or camode for it so that when you are not eating your dinner staring at a toilet with a disgusting towel hanging out of it.

@@Padraigp towel is disgusting? It’s a dry towel. You use it to dampen the smell and then remove it when you use the toilet. I don’t think you understand what’s going on here. I’m in a 12x12 cabin by myself. There is no closet. There is no dining room. I sleep here and that’s it. The lid is a toilet lid. This thing works perfect. I’m not surewhere you’re coming from but you’re not seeing this the way it really is. It doesn’t smell. I appreciate your input and your time but I don’t think you know what you’re seeing. This “bucket of turds” is the standard way you do a compost toilet. It doesn’t sound like you have the experience in this area to be giving this kind of advice.
Everybody has a different situation. Mine requires this standard compost toilet.

@tyasteele I have 30 years experience with dry toilets dear I understand perfectly well whats going on. What's going on is you're living in a cabin with a toilet in it for some bizzare reason. And don't like going outside. And have a towel over your shit bucket to catch the smell....which doesn't exist so then don't use the towel if there's no smell.all that towel is doing is collecting fecal bacteria. Which you obviously don't know anything about or you wouldn't be living in a toilet.anyway I understand a lot more than you seem to. It's a badly designed way of living. And sad that not only do you not know any better but you haven't the humility to take critisism.rsther you are arrogant and tell me I don't understand a subject I've worked with for decades. Anyway. Have a day.enjoy living in your toilet with a shit towel hanging out of it. You do you. If that's how you want to live and thats the best you can do then thats how you will gp on.
