George was amazing but Dean really embodied Blake so well, you could really feel how he was just a kid who saw war as he was told to see it : a chance to show your bravery and come back to your family with honor. I think his love for his brother is what made the pace of the movie so interesting, and also one of the things that kept Schofield moving forward. Scho looks for Blake's brother with as much determination as he did bringing the letter to Mackenzie. Lovely actors, lovely story.

Cinematography and Sound, definitely. Editing is a different matter as the Academy didn't embrace "Birdman"'s "one take" editing, plus it seems Thelma Schoonmaker is a shoo-in for her fourth Oscar with Scorsese for "The Irishman".

I did wonder about those accidental collisions during the running scene near the end of the movie. The first extra didn't get up after falling and I wondered what he was thinking, like, "Oh crap, I ran into the main actor. I'll just stay down so I don't call attention to myself." The second extra that got ran into got back up and continued. They really added to the chaotic energy. Happy accidents.

the movie is designed to be like one shot and is set over a smaller period of time then usual in a film. it's literally a movie about a few hours, one set moment which isn't done often. considering the movie is set over a few hours, i think it has good enough character development, but we never really need to know much about the characters, just what they are doing. they won't be able to have real character development when something is set for just under a day. and the story is literally about trying to save 1600 men, that is the story

An amazing film. I wonder if the young woman with a baby was one of Sam's grandfather's stories. Through random chance and opportunity a soldier was able to give her food and supplies in a life or death situation. It was as if he was meant to be there at that exact time for them. The scene has stuck with me, among other scenes of this movie, but it probably didn't even have to be in it. Although to me it made the film even more enjoyable. I'd like to imagine she and the baby survived, and went onto live rich meaningful lives. It'd be a great spin off ... a 1917 story! There could be a lot of spin off stories from 1917. We briefly met so many fascinating characters, their war stories would be incredible to watch too.

Interesting take from Mendes at the end about a unified Europe. As a brexit voter, the opposite sentiment would apply for me: the nationalism of empire which is now replicated by the EU vision, is what created the conditions for WW1: brexit was the fight against the divisive empire building of the EU; and instead was about the freedom of ordinary people to hold politicians to account and look outward to the world. Maybe the rich and powerful like Mendes just don't know how it feels to be powerless. Fascinating how interpretation of events is influenced by one's own individual experience.

“Fighting for a free and unified Europe.”
Is Sam on acid? No one, on any side, would recognise that as what they were fighting for. Freedom, possibly, but the idea of a unified Europe was non existent in 1917. Britain and France were world empires for starters. The only country even vaguely trying to unify Europe was Germany.
