    Hi Ralfy, for me Glen Scotia is real underrated treasure. Love their Double cask, Victoriana and 15 yo is amazing. From my resources that I found (from person who visit the distillery) the main line recipe is:
    Double Cask - approx 5 yo: 5% peated barley. 1st fill American oak main maturation, 6 months first fill PX casks, 12 months 2nd fill Oloroso casks.
    Victoriana - approx 12 yo: 5% peated barley. 1st fill American oak main maturation, then 30% spirit goes to PX and 70% goes to 12 months heavy charred re-fill cask maturation.
    15 yo - 5% peated barley. re-fill American oak main maturation, last 6 weeks first fill Oloroso casks.
    Cheers mate.

    Further info from Roy Aquavitae:
    "Typically" it is:
    70% 10yo first fill bourbon
    10% 12yo first fill bourbon
    20% 16-18yo refill American and European
    These are vatted and filled into 30% first fill PX hogsheads/butts and 70% heavily charred American for another 12 months.
    Then vatted again (!) and put into "inert" 3rd or 4th refill barrels to let it "marry for a bit longer".
    Phew.

      Honestly for the price and quality, that is a LOT of work and internal expense. I’m grateful they are so committed to the craft and intent on making a name for the brand at a reasonable cost to the consumer. Well done Glen Scotia. Well done. Full support.

      To me a malt mark is the least useful bit of info. It's but a shortcut, an executive summary, confirming what I see during the tasting. I derive far more by reading between the lines. That is why I've been suggesting that he could review the NAS releases that he likes and just not mark them.

    Hi ralfy
    Hope you are doing great, I couldn't help but say I recommended this Glen Scotia victoriana to you months ago when you were drinking the Glen Scotia 15 year old, the victoriana is one of very few bottles that I have on my bar that's a nas. I simply stumbled upon, it is now one of my favorites out of 200 + bottles, I love it !! Ralfy I recently joined your patreon channel, can you check to see if on your end this is the case, I want to make sure that the money is going to you and not some scam people, because I don't join just any you-tuber, you are the only one I have ever joined, just because you are the only one who I trust in when doing a review, your batting 100 in my books, and your scores are the best on RUclips reviews of single malt scotch, cheers ralfy and keep the great videos coming !!!

    Just had my first dram of this malt. Ralfy of course is always spot on.
    Bottled here in the States at 54.2%.
    A very complex spirit. Not for novice whisky tasters!
    Allowed to breathe with the addition of purified water for apx 30 minutes this whisky delivers an abundance of deep earthy flavor. Fresh cut grass and pure unrefined, raw honey. Slightly reminiscent of Springbank 10 which we unfortunately cannot find here anymore....
    A beautiful fusion of the land and the Sea ! ...
    The green bottle suggesting ties to Islay ...
    A very complex dry whisky..

      @SaltyCuban 2 года назад +1

      It’s not a different bottling for the states. It’s the recent bottling since 2019. Older versions had two different abvs.

    While I fully support transparency and hence welcome any age statement, it must be said that recent SWA regulations make it harder for producers to fairly label their malts when blending casks of different ages just as seems to be the case with the Victoriana. Compass Box's 'Three Year Old Deluxe...' put its finger exactly in this wound. It's quite schizzophrenic that you can put your composition on your website, e.g Compass Box, Bruichladdich, but not on the label.

    • @bigwhiggler9614
      @bigwhiggler9614 3 года назад +6

      You can't put it on the website either, or anywhere. Check Bruichladdich's website. In a given batch, the vintage of all casks besides the youngest are redacted.

    • @DonnerPassWhisky
      @DonnerPassWhisky 3 года назад +6

      @@bigwhiggler9614 noticed this myself about a year ago ? Glad that Bruichladdich left black rectangles where the age of the other casks were in the chart to show that they were censored. It's just ridiculous to punish transparency.

      Thanks, everyone! Ralfy, this is exactly why reviews like this one are valuable, even without a malt mark. A "Ralfy-recommended" is far more information than age statement and SWA can't censor that!

    Victoriana was my first Campbeltown bottle. 51.5% version for under $80 US just after Xmas last year. While I do want a couple more bottles in the stash I also still need to get something from Springbank and Kilkerran. You are quite correct on the notes. For me it came across as chocolate covered cherries kind of sweetness and cheesecake like richness and holds up to water with ease. Easily in the top 3 of the bottles I have experienced. I tried some at the store I bought at as they had a newly open bottle and it was quite reminiscent of Remy Martin VSOP at first.

I came back to this review now that I have bought a botle of Victoriana, and just noticed that you mention a volium of 51.5% alcohol, while on the botle of Victoriana I've bought it says 54.2%! While it is a decent Whisky, it is not as good as you discribe it. A different batch, a different experience...

    I was going to write a big spiel here but at the end of the day I might as well just say I agree with everything you said about Glen Scotia, the Victoriana and multiple age statements on bottles.
    I bought a bottle of Victoriana a couple of years ago and was thoroughly impressed with it, reaching the same conclusion that there must be a mix of old and young whisky in it, about the only good way to make a NAS whisky IMO.

    Hello Ralfy, It's been a while but I had to come back to your Magnificent extras 879. I happened to get 2 bottles of Glen Scotia Victoriana at 51.5% and then the 54.2% came on the scene, well I was heartbroken as I tried a 54.2% and was very disappointed so, as things turn out I ended up with 2 bottles of 54.2% at an incredibly great price so I took them and was trying the neck pour and listening to your extras and realized that this Victoriana was quite worthy of the nomination the it had for whisky of the year in the 2022 OSWAS. my first 54.2% wasn't the dram I have now. Oh my, this is absolutely beautiful. Not the 51.5% that I still have 2 unopened bottles of(as pre your fine recommendation). But in it's own right, wonderful. I thank you so much for the understanding that you impart. Glen Scotia had a hiccup cause the 2019 release of the victoriana was no the same as the 2022. However I blended it with Campbeltown Festival 2020 and the 15yr old so it's still pure!? the 2022 release of Victoriana is Fabulous! Thank you for reminding me.

    I decided to buy another bottle of Bunna 12 (11 months since last) after been drinking this and that, including 10 and 12 year old whiskies under 46%. I was mostly focusing on the flavour this time, and can honestly confirm that chill filtration DOES affect the flavour.. it becomes less oily. I remember google-ing 'chill filtration' while ago and saw opinions from distillers , that has to mean something if the masters themselves claim it affects the texture.

    Hi, Ralfy and guys, I got a problem, see if anyone can explain. I first opened a bottle of Glen Scotia 14yo Tawny Port Limited Campbeltown Malts Festival 2020 52.8% 9 months ago (it's late spring time around 27°C in my town). It was full of aroma of sea spray, rosehip, savoury plum and a finish of dry mouth feel that you get by drinking tea. It's superb. Thus, I only have a wee sip every time, around 10cl consumed until now. Stored in a dark and wooden cupboard. However, when I pour another dram 1 month ago, it changes significantly (in a worst way). It became a dram with strong alcoholic month feel, all the good aroma and flavors I mentioned have gone, only a hint of orange peel and citrus note remained. I guess this is close to the taste of the 'naked' Glen Scotia distillate without the Tawny port influence. As a result, I tried to open a sealed new bottle of the same single malt (Glen Scotia 14yo Tawny Port Limited Campbeltown Malts Festival 2020 52.8%), and hoped to blend both of them in a small sample bottle, so as to 're-activate' the bad one with the fresh and good one. After 2 weeks of waiting, nothing has changed and I am still figuring out what's the problem? It seems that the flavors of single malts that 'finish' in port casks can be gone quite soon. One thing I do now is to apply wine preserver to all of my opened 'port finish' malts. Does anyone have the same experience? Cheers.

    Also there seems to be three versions. The “Original” at 51.5 abv. (@2015),then there was a batch 001 Cask Strength 54.8 only for one year (2018), and Cask strength 54.2 (2019-present).
    I have only had the most recent. No idea if the others are much different or better.

    Dear Ralfy: first of all, I want to say that I thoroughly enjoy you videos, I learn a lot from them. Sorry for the long comment.
    I would like to offer a different opinion on the issue of non age statement whiskies. As you mention in your videos, the whisky world, and to a greater extant the malt enthusiast world, is getting smaller and flatter. Like many others, I now do most of my malt purchases online, after doing some online research (in which your opinion often carries a lot of weight). In this era, malt mates around the globe are connected and views and opinions on whiskies spread throughout this global community rapidly. This phenomenon created a “buyer’s market”, in which while distilleries, especially the smaller more exotic ones, have access to a wider audience, malt mates have a lot more to choose from and can easily access information. This, in turn, should push distilleries to become more “honest” and market better products. A small, exotic, distillery cannot afford to market a bad bottling these days, as it can likely damage the distillery’s reputation and damage sales of all its bottlings. A non age statement bottling can allow a distillery to creatively use its inventory, as you described, mixing very old whiskies with younger ones, generating interesting combinations of smell and taste. And all this at (usually) affordable prices since there is no age statement. However, we should not be afraid to try them out. Most of them will be good, some will be excellent. The price for being bad, or even mediocre, is simply too high these days.

    • @alexk3088
      @alexk3088 2 года назад

      Well, I do agree, however there's also a legion of mediocre NAS malts, even from nice distilleries. And the cost of wasting money on them can add up. Mortlach Rare Old, Scapa Skiren are examples. On the other hand I do enjoy Highland Park Dark Origins, maybe not at full price. And Glenlivet Nadurra. And Glenfarclas 105. It's truly a double edged sword and must be taken on a case by case basis.

    Like this drum (cask strenght 54.2%) and for me it was excellent with a teespoon of mineral (carbonated) water. Then, I was consuming in parallel Redbreast 12 which I enjoyed more.

      I don’t know, it’s about the same price as the 15 where I am. I would assume that if it were that straightforward that they would have it priced significantly lower than the fullbred 15 year. After tasting it I feel that Ralfy is right, there is some 18-21 year old whisky in there adding the tobacco and leather notes. I think this bottle is basically the blender showing off his skills. Too bad they can’t disclose the recipe.

    Laphroaig is quite open about Laphroaig lore, mainly 15 year old ex bourbon with some 7-8 year old and also 11 and some 21 year old in there. Do you really think it’s in everyone’s best interest for them to put 7-8 years on the bottle when the majority of the whisky is 15 years old but the 8 and 11 are in there because it’s the flavor profile they want. I don’t think anyone would buy it.

    Hi Ralfy! I was interested in your comment about fatigued casks, because I don't think I really quite understand what makes an effective cask. Isn't this the same with age statements? When the distillers have those old casks with 35% alcohol them, they can put them in younger whisky and still put and age statement. On top of that, then they come and tell you how their 12 year old is so much better than others, and image what the 18 or 21 will be. While in fact the 12 has a lot of older casks in it.
    Well, I prefer no age statement in this case.

I have heard you mention that you were omitting to review it since it's NAS, but as a matter of fact each bottle has a code on it which when entered on the website will reveal the age of the youngest casks used in the batch.

What you quoted from this video pertains to whiskies of which the age isn't known. In whiskies where information (colorant, filtration, etc.) is provided on the tin, but not on the label, for example, it isn't that ralfy refuses to believe it, it's that he feels it's more concrete/accessible when it is featured on the label (e.g. his video on Tomatin 18 year).

    Ralfy, I've got an off topic question for you. I picked up a 5 liter cask (new) as a gift for the Mrs. At first I just thought of it as a lark, not to be taken too seriously. But then I thought again, "hey! this is a real cask with real oak staves. Why not see how this might turn out." While I cannot speak to the quality of the cask, I can introduce something of a quality spirit to it. And so, If it was your new 5 liter cask & you lived in the states, as we do, what might you pick first to age in it. Oh, by the way, the cask is charred. Thanks Ralfy.

    I recently bought my first Johnny Walker whiskey which is also my first blended scotch ever. It was the Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal. It has several aged spirits in it obviously especially the Glenury Royal that closed in 1985. It has no age statement but has at least some 35+ year old spirits in the blend. What’s your opinion on these blends that have very old whiskey as the staple of these non age statement blends. In Oklahoma USA the bottle runs $389 dollars.
