You never stop blowing my mind with your knowledge of whiskey. I am a subscriber and supporter for this reason. This post made my week. I am looking forward to the extras post to learn even more. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I wish one day to have the ability to taste half as well as you. Alas, time is against me, but I am optimistic. Thank you Ralfy for your insight and for always sharing everything so clearly and transparently. Integrity!

Same here. Most whisky channels should be watching, listening and learning as opposed to trying to teach others. I was laughing hysterically the other day when one of such channels' personality referred to Ralfy as "another RUclips whisky channel".

Looking forward to the extras for this. Living in a state with limited choices that doesn't allow for ordering from outside sources, the best way for me to experience more whiskys is to do a little blending on my own.

I just purchased my first independent bottling yesterday. Haven't opened it yet but it's a Signatory 16 year old 1997 distilled dufftown, 46% non chill filtered. It was time to break away from core line bottles and try something different. Working my way to the cask strength stuff but not in a hurry! Thanks ralfy

I picked up a bottle of Benrinnes at my favorite whisky store this year: A 14YO Benrinnes single cask from Montgomerie’s, bottled at 59.1ABV. They told me that they had brought it up from their vault, where a few bottles had been collecting dust. They weren’t kidding about the vault: A week or two later, I looked at the bottling date: 2003. It had been downstairs for 16 years. Well worth the $110 price of admission. I get a lot of the same notes-especially the butterscotch.

Hi Ralfy. Having myself sampled quite a few independent bottlers over the years, I have reached the same conclusion as you, that Cadenhead and Signatory are the two most consistently reliable bottlers. I have not bought anything from these two which were not excellent. The same cannot be said for Gordon and MacPhail where, in my experience, it's a real gamble. I've had some G&M which have been honestly awful and a complete waist of money. Having said that, I am a big fan of their distillery Benromach which only produces single malts of the highest quality.
As for Benrinnes. I recently bought a bottle of "The Carn Mor Vintage Collection" 2002 Vintage Benrinnes, Bottled in 2009 from a single Ex-Bourbon hogshead No.5. It was simply delicious and only 7 years of maturation! My tasting notes are actually quite similar to yours despite the fact that yours is 18 years old.
Sweet and sour / bitter lemon. Bitter-sweet Honey. Yellow fruits like slightly un-ripe honeydew melon. Pineapple. Some nice mild wood spices and a lovely light lemony refreshing finish.
    Expensive but Highly recommended.

Had a dram of the Benrinnes 1997 SV 20YO. Lovely malt! Going to get the 18 YO.
Edit, just bought one. 88 euros is not too bad for an 18YO.

I have a bottle of 23 year old distilled in 1995. I was in Campbeltown this year and did the Cadenhead warehouse tasting and they give you the opportunity to buy bottles from the cask you try, on of which was the Benrinnes. I have not opened the bottle yet so I cannot be sure my memory of the dram I tried from the barrel are accurate until I do. But I strongly recommend the warehouse tasting if one happens to be in town. The most interesting thing was a blended whiskey of unknown composition that was 39 years in the barrel.

I'm excited for the upcoming Ardbeg experiment. I recently tried out your oaking experiment on a bottle of Tomatin that I wasn't very fond of. I actually ended up soaking a medium toast American stave in a mead that I made. It's been two weeks, and I am very happy with the results. I'm planning to make a video about it, and I'll make sure to leave you a shoutout and link to your channel / that video.

Ralfy? 1:20 "Benrinnes is the highest distillery in Scotland by just a few meters" ?????
According to Google, Ben Rinnes is the highest mountain in the Speyside region but the highest distillery in Scotland is argued between Dalwhinnie and Braeval distillery. I believe that Dalwhinnie wins by a half a meter or so they claim.

    • @humphandhumbug
      @humphandhumbug 5 лет назад +1

Reb Mordechai according to my GPS, Braeval at 354m is about a metre higher than Dalwhinnie (353m). But it doesn’t have a visitors centre, and is a modern distillery, so there’s no legend in that.
Benrinnes is nowhere near the highest distillery in Scotland at approximately 230m

I think it's great that you took the trouble to find out for yourself. I'm sure others would argue with you but not me. Instead I was looking for any reasonably priced bottles of Braeval to try. There isn't much about. I only found this one. Braeval 21yo 1994 #CM234 £110.

@@kresimirjelcic576 Nonsense, he never said that he's NOT going to review whiskies that are chill filtered and/or artificially coloured, his embargo solely includes No-Age-Statement malts.
If a malt happens to be devoid of both, artificial colour and chill filtration, it gets a special shout out as it is an 'integrity malt'.
But he DID clearly state in one of his last reviews of 2018 that his FOCUS will be on these 'integrity malts'.

@@fredlabosch5164 as you said he mentioned in one his last 2018 videos that his focus in 2019 will be on whiskies that are natural coloured and non chill filtered, therefore you can conclude that the reason why Ralfy will not review the Flor&Fauna series is above mentioned.

Thanks for your info, not only on the whisky itself, but on certain bottling brands like Cadenhead. I've made it to the point in my whisky journey of looking into non in-house bottlings and have tried many Adelphi and a few Old Malt Cask ones, but cannae afford to buy a whole bottle...
On another note, this may be good for folk who are into whisky auctions or are a wee wary of certain older aged whiskies that may be suspect? Wonder if they'll have an home-test version? I'm sure you've read this, but it looks promising! Here's a link to the BBC article: www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-49239925

It’s with mixed emotion I watch these reviews from a few years ago, the enthusiasm and yearning for good single malt whisky is infectious, the reality is Cadenhead’s have been off the boil for a while now, almost since this review came out. There’s the odd decent bottling here and there but it’s really poor quality stuff for the prices and available alternatives these days. Good spirits at reasonable age statements, let down by the maturation in poor casks. Besides the Campbeltown Malts Festival undisclosed Islay exclusive, they have had nothing to shout about this year, nothing. The Edinburgh store is nearly empty and the familiar, old guard of staff have been replaced. Cadenhead’s were an institution in scotch whisky, a company, a brand that was always taken seriously and given the benefit of the doubt when they bottled something peculiar, now they’re living off the recent boom of Springbank notoriety and as a stand-alone independent bottler, their crown as the cream of the crop has well and truly been taken. I’m interested to hear your thoughts on the state of play with Cadenhead’s in 2022. Cheers Ralfy 🥃
