This song was the first, and one of the only Rap songs to win the best song from a motion picture Oscar! Needless to say Eminem did not show up to the awards as he didn't think he'd win and he was resting while his daughter watched cartoons. :)
The song is of course from Eminem's first starring role in the movie 8 Mile (his acting performance was also lauded as a break out role for the rapper)

Portugal here for the Goat Eminem always since day one and forever. Still remember the day I watched 8 Mile movie in the movie theatre, never knowing this was going to be a worldwide song for decades, easily recognizable in any country, motivational and one of the best and most iconoc songs ever.

The seriousness and stress of this song is phenomenal, but that pumping bass drum and that guitar, so addictive and heart pounding.

Not only can he do that insane machine gun rapping, filled with clever word play and double meanings, etc dude can write a hell of a pop hook. He also can tell a good story.
I think the second verse of this song is overlooked, because it's the least pertinent, it's the verse he didn't sing at the Oscars, it has more to do with Eminem the person than it does 8 Mile. But it's by far the most technically impressive, the rhyme scheme he keeps up throughout it actually amazing. I've noticed he does that in a lot of songs, the first verse and the third verse have the real content, the third verse is usually the most impactful, and the second verse he decides to show off lyrically, it's so seamless though you wouldn't even know it unless you really listen for it.

Just realized that this song is about his opportunity to do this movie soundtrack. He is a very special person because of his life experiences. Imagine if he had a normal or privileged life. I don't think there would have ever been slim shady....

A fun little titbit, he actually opened a restaurant in Detroit called "Mom's spaghetti." Lol also the trailer park where this movie was filmed is at 8 and Ryan. I used to hang out there with a friend and smoke a little devil's lettuce. It's an interesting neighborhood to say the least.

I would love to see more Tupac/Eminem reactions. While Eminem's newer music appeals to many, I personally find his work from 99-03 to be his best. Tupac will have you down an endless rabbit hole discovering new song after new song. Given that he recorded around 700 songs in 5 years, you might be at it a while! Well worth it though, as you have seen already, Tupac's music hits you deep in your soul.
