Bought a SDR and this is my 2 cents. Great roadbike, wind is a problem at illegal speed but that is with every naked bike i reckon. Had it on track, and no sorry, it is not "Ready to Race" out the box. The stock steering damper is utter trash, at WOT there is serious cause for concern about massive headshake, not even at WOT. Feeling in corners, fast left to right the SDR feels flighty and not very planted. As a rider who does a fair amount of track days, the SDR was not the answer , actually I got out and bought i race spec RR for the track. With the price of the SDR and "Ready to Race" hype, it is a bit dissapointing imo. It really should have been launched with better suspension and a proper steering damper.

Have to agree. I owned a Speed R before buying the SDR and the feeling mid turn was miles better, and we're talking a bike than most "expert journos on magazines" write to be old and lazy feeling compared to the competition. My ass.
Agree completely, on every count. These are common complaints on 1st and 2nd gen SDR's. Which is exactly why its so much fun to upgrade the bouncers, there is a LOT to gain. If you can get past the additional costs, there is a massively wonderful motorcycle hiding under its poor suspension.

@@EvanDrinkwater Well you're walking and talking (well... typing at least) so that's a good one in my book. It took three weeks to get my team 999 sticker in the US so maybe they're running out and making them as they go. I put it on the back of my helmet over the DOT sticker - that might be an option since you're between bikes.
I have the Gen 2 2017 1290 SDR and was really disappointed with the stock suspension, particularly on track. Looked at the WP competition kit and just couldn't justify the price. I did some research and went for an Italian Andreani cartridge kit with springs rated to suit my weight. It has cost me £546.00 plus £150 fitting. It now has preload adjustment along with split compression and rebound tweak ability. Really high quality kit, CNC machined caps, It now feels like a completley different bike and has immediately improved the ride. Far more plush through the stroke and much firmer due to the uprated springs. Have also ordered a heavier rear spring for the stock rear shock for £90 (apparently the stock rear shock is really good but just needs a heavier spring). Fitting for approx £100. So that's a complete bespoke suspension set up, suited to my ample man weight for less than £900.00. I think Al mentioned the rear WP shock was £1600?
I lived for eight years in east Tennessee and I can say I found the limits of my stock suspension on two bikes. I spent a little over $5500.00 US with Traxxion Dynamics to do the suspension on both bikes and it was the best money I have ever spent on a bike! I can't wait to get the suspension done on my newest bike followed by an ECU flash!
Great review and very interesting test. Mine was improved with the revalve but still wasn't sharp enough. Sure this kit would improve it considerably

Bought an mt09 in the summer and changed the suspension to maxton front and rear. The difference is amazing.
Slightly different but just done my 04 bandit 600 with progressive front springs and rear shock. Also jacked up 35mm and the thing just loves diving into corners. You would expect a bike like the 09 to have a decent setup. Kinda a shame in all honesty
While I understand KTM offering a suspension upgrade to other bikes in their lineup that need it am I out of line in thinking there 19k super naked should already come with a sorted freaking suspension? Are we really at a place now where you can sell an eye bleedingly priced motorcycle and then have the stones to offer an OEM upgrade for the bike you just sold your kidney for? Makes me wonder why motorcycle sales are declining in the states. 😅
Sounds like the OEM stuff is better for the road anyway. I love mine.

U just bought a sdr 2018, the wp is the least of your problems, i went ape crazy as soon as i learned i had to spend extra 300usd to unblock track pack, its a fucking rippoff, seriously if i didnt selled already my previous bike i would call off the deal.

At the end of the day, every Super Naked has to choose which way it leans....More Street or More Track. The SDR leans more street, whereas the Tuono leans more track. I opted for the SDR because I can literally do everything on it. Commute, carve local twisties, occasional track days and road trips w/ luggage. The suspension does leave something to be desired on the track, but it's a small price to pay if you only do 1-4 track days a year. I wouldn't want to do a 1500 mile road trip on a Tuono
Well, have t say thanks to you guys again (44 Teeth) fo getting good info out. The WP stuff isn’t pushed or really known about here in the states. I’ve been tossing up back and forth for a suss kit. You guys have some good data and real world feed back on a product. Love it keep it up!
THIS is why I watch this channel, for how much I learn. To hear the two of you discussing something like this, I learn quite a lot. In the US, Racetech and Ohlins seem to be the two big suspension gurus. Apparently Racetech are not used in MotoGP, but are they known in the UK at all? Is Racetech used in other racing leagues like World Superbike? Both offer suspension classes, so I'm trying to understand which one I should go to. Keep up the great work, and congrats again Al for finishing Weston Beach. How many days did it take before your muscles stopped hurting anymore?
Nobody this side of the Atlantic has heard of Racetech. But Ohlins are known Worldwide, and provide suspension to factory teams in MotoGP and World Superbikes.
That should tell you everything you need to know.
Except you didn't touch on how much it actually improved your lap times, which is a valid concern for those considering the kit.
The vest thing I have done with my last 2 bikes was to have the suspension setup buy a guy who knows what he's doing at my local Duc dealer. It wasn't cheap but boy does it make a difference.
All my track bikes had suspension done by Stig Pettersson and all were fantastic! That's something most people overlook when trying to figure out how to make their bike better.

You might be a few tenths quicker with more power but you'll be seconds quicker with better suspension/handling
I firmly believe that - if not an already high-spec bike from factory - the first money spent on aftermarket part are certainly for brakes and similar stuff.

Any motorcycle under $13,000 OEM dollars? Aftermarket suspension can do a WORLD of good.
In fact, the most neglected part of the vast majority of motorcycles out on the highways and byways is the suspension. Most people don't change the springs to suit their body weight. Most people don't set up the sag (which requires proper spring rates, usually). Most people don't have good damping.
Most stock suspension is the favorite place for manufacturers to cost-cut.
The suspension is always the place to cut cost. People look for low price, high horsepower, and low weight. People won't even buy a big twin because the price can be higher and the horsepower lower they have no idea how good it will sound and how much fun the torque will be even at low rpm.
Most people don’t get anywhere near the level of riding to need upgraded suspension..even on track unless you’re handy
@@mbal4052 It's not about needed an advanced "level" of function from a given motorcycle because you want to ride a razor edge of traction at mach 2.
I've owned and ridden many motorcycles over the years, mostly Japanese. Until you've been on a bike with high quality dampers that's been tuned (intentionally or unintentionally) to your body weight and riding style, you'll not understand the difference it makes.
There's many motorcycles out there that are actually very good, but get a bad rap because they ride on ox cart technology. Motorcycles are not cars, they don't weigh 3,800 pounds. A 200 pound man gets into a 3800 pound vehicle and barely anything changes. The springs are mostly unaffected. The damping circuits are mostly unaffected. The brakes are mostly unaffected. But, a 200 pound man gets on a 420 pound motorcycle......guess what?
No motorcycle..let me repeat: NO MOTORCYCLE on earth has been built to work well with the 140 pound Spanyard as well as the 240 pound American. It's impossible. Manufacturers have to select a best compromise and built it. For everyone else, you NEED to change the springs (at minimum) in the shock and forks to match your body weight. And at best, install hardware that allows full adjustment of compression and rebound damping, and further, high/low speed compression damping.
When you finally ride a motorcycle that has superb control of how the tires oscillate over road surfaces, you'll understand. The street environment is MORE suitable to high quality suspension, not less. Race tracks are butter smooth (many of them). Race tracks have optimal pavement traction. Race tracks are free of dust and debris. Race tracks are maintained by a governing body. Race tracks only receive one kind of traffic. Everywhere else, suspension has to work much more effectively to keep that tire on the surface of the road no matter what. Quality hardware with expert tuning will only make you a better rider. Reduce tire wear. Give you far more confidence. Release you to advance your riding skill. Allow you to be much more safe. Get the most out of a given motorcycle. If these things don't matter to you, do what you want to do.
Lifted_Above I’ll bet I’ve a lot more biking experience than you have, I’ve raced motox from 8 years old, short circuit racer, road racer, toured a lot of the world, ridden enduro all over Europe including some of the toughest gruelling competitions, owned over 50 motorbikes of most styles and types and I still think standard suspension is good enough for most average riders..
Ps I have as much fun riding an old rickety piece of crap with poor suspension as I do the latest and greatest suspended model with its ‘gliding’ over bumps suspension
You see, this is why I keep coming back to 44T every time. The point about the target audience is a good one, the first thing the average road rider does is swap the exhaust, get a remap and a smattering of carbon. I'd wager this would eat up most, if not all of the budget to swap the suspension and make a much sharper bike. I can't get my head around the 'Ohlins factor', yes they do make some proper jewellery grade suspension but, what makes everything happen is the support and the backup. WP, Mupo, Intrax, then places like K-Tech et al who drop in various kits, it is just valving and flow, you don't need to have a set of forks from Mark Marquez's bike, what you need is someone to set the bike up for what you actually do with it? The average horny ride across the UK has very little in common with Portimao! Baron, do you honestly want to drop in a kit to replace the S1000RR e-stuff, I'd have thought that was the USP of it, i.e. no compromises and something which figures the conditions out, is it all BS or is there more to it ?

I always liked te know if the WP upgrade was worth the money. But one important thing I wanted to know I’ve missed; how much faster where you exactly in seconds from OEM to upgrade?
Being a trackday - and a busy one at that - we weren't allowed to time... but my phone app reckons 2 secs a lap based on sectors. And that's on Silverstone's shorter International layout

Ohlins has been sold to a US "auto" parts company. So I reckon WP have a massive opportunity to push to that must-have slot for top league aftermarket and even other (non-ktm) bike manfs specials. This on an MT09 sounds interesting though.
As good as that WP is, since I’ve seen the Ohlins event based suspension on the Ducati V4R, I don’t think set and forget style suspension will be around in 5-10 years. Great content non the less Guys 👍

The Wilbers 640 upgrade to my MT09 absolutely transformed the machine.
Those prices sound pretty reasonable to me... less than the cost of a high end exhaust or CF/Magnesium wheels. Since one of the things most complained about on the SD is the suspension, the WP offering makes total sense... now about those brakes...

I had the previous gen of the 1290 SD. It was a good bike but let down by the chassis/suspension. I tried lots of recommended suspension settings plus adjustable steering damper etc but it was always a twitchy bike.
Real shame as it was great in every other aspect (except leaking oil and costing too much new).
Now I have an MT10 which although isn’t perfect handles way better and is just as much fun. Also you will have such a price saving over the SD you can but shock, fork cartridges and an exhaust/reflash and still save money over the KTM
I too found the comfort settings to be pretty amazing on the road. Still put mupo on forks and shock. Still trying to get front sorted. Had to be revalved twice.
Comfort setting is one of the finds of the year!
The house just after the Slapton turn/bridge is my mums house feel free to pop in and have a go on our mx track. Ps it's the 100mph Road you just need to make sure your nice a straight for the crests
This is why am selling my H2, the 2020 1290 Super Duke is going be my last bike àfter owning 40 year's of Kawasaki. Comfort, low grunt, attention to detail amazing, it's only downfall at it's high price range are that you have pay for quick shifter and the shut of anti wheelie.

I'm ok with the superduke suspension on track days since our local circuit is a small one, but on highways when above 200km/h on straights and 160km/h on bends the bike feels twitchy especially when road surfaces are uneven. I even prefer my friend's cheap Chinese TNT600 for highway.
That's why i have Ohlins NIX30 cartridges and the correct springs for my weight on my MT09 with a rear Ohlins YA335 shock. (looking to maybe upgrade to TTX...)

Not to hate or anything, but you've got 20 to 30 clicks because you DON'T want to have a sensible suspension that would change from harsh to soft, or from damped to loose by just one click. You want to have some range to keep things balanced, and easily find your tuning.. apart for that great content as aways guys, keep it up!

May I just confirm that you said the standard WP suspension put onto comfort setting was a massive improvement from the factory setting?
Just purchased my k tech dds pro shock for my fireblade then looking to do internals on the front I find by just having a new shock and tweaking the front slightly it's totally transformed the bike and this is only on been on road not track as yet well worth the money fantastic mod.
road suspension is learning from the mx industry suspension in my opinion... have had adjustable shocks for ages yet only recently has came into full affect I think on the road

If I were doing a complete suspension overhaul for the track, Nitron would most certainly be my first port of call (I don't work for them I just like their products).

In terms of lap times, they're both pretty similar. Down to budget and rider preference.
The amount of money you pay for a bike like this, it should come from the factory all sorted out with the right components for the rider's weight! You're the perfect customer (for them) if you think that after spending 20k+ on a bike, it's a good idea to also spend a few grand more on suspension...
So tempted to add a cartridge kit to my atrocious front forks, but the amount my insurance jumps for "uprated suspension" is insane (£400 -> £1100!)

I think what by what he means by “comfort” is…in the Manuel they list the number of turns for your compression, rebound etc for your suspension settings… comfort, sport, and track I think are the 3 categories in which they list all different number of turns for each.

I just bought a 2018 r-1z.. i also am going to do a manually adjustable Öhlins suspension on this bike.. my questions is actually about brake upgrades... I’m used to my s1000rr and superduke.. do i need to replace the pads , fluid and master cylinder or also the rotors and calipers to get the braking power I’m used to.. thank you in advance..

i have not try the WP shock, but a hugh upgrade from stock component(2011 honda cb1000r)
A lot of OEM 'premium' suspension is pretty terrible. I've been quite disappointed with the Ohlins on my Hypermotard, ran out of enough adjust-ability for rebound on the front. Just shows you're often better spending less to begin with and spending money on proper after market stuff.

I have had WP suspension on a few older bikes but they seem to have lost their presence in the current market, fantastic kit but who sells or distributes it now ? Ohlins & K-Tech are in everyones face as they promote their kit.
I had a WP steering damper I kept for years, had it on 3 bikes was the first gas pressurised one I had, that was years ago, wish I'd kept it now as it was better than Ohlins & K-Tech
KTM partly owns WP so all KTMs come with WP. I've seen them on a few Triumphs as well
@@RealOrbit-Australia Yes, I have had 5 KTM's - I have one in the garage now :-) but they only concentrate on KTM, they should be promoting their range the same way Ohlins, K-Tech, Nitron, Maxton, Penske etc. do, it is high quality kit. Last GSXR1000 I had I put a WP rear shock in it, transformed the bike.

Erm. I’m from WP, erm erm, you can change things, erm, take the oil out, erm, put back in, erm, put the cartridges in, erm, erm.
I wish my car had shocks like that with individual adjusters for bump and rebound..why do bikes have so much better shocks? and more availability as well.
Rider and luggage weight plays a bigger role in relative terms to the vehicle weight, which in term affects handling massively. Also there are more people tracking their bikes than there are people tracking their midlevel eco boxes.
@@Actionlutz Yes that is true, I am just frustrated because I know the technology is out there but manufacturer's dont bother with it on normal cars. Active suspension would be amazing..Citroen had it on a normal car the Xantia activa of the 90's..my new car wallows and is bumpy at the same time...
Ive been saying it for YEARS... stock suspension is JUNK. Japanese bikes especially. I've changed out suspension on 5 bikes in the last 4 years. K-Tech is my favourite.

Because they can a spare set of wheels for a car as little as a few 100 quid. Set of wheels for a bike £4k. And you need extra bearings discs and cogs
Because people will buy it at that price. If you want you can sell bike parts for half the price if you can make them for that cheap.
