It's almost as good as Suikoden 2. I love the music, the characters, the tough recruitment which harps back to the first games and gives a sense of urgency. The formations are great, the world battles are great with the dragon horses and beavers and the ship to ship combat on the river. The characters are awesome and of course the story itself is very very good.

The best Suikoden for me. I’ve played 2 and that was definitely good but V just did it for me. Very well-written, deep, complex story with fleshed out characters with different personalities, good voice acting, phenomenal music, fun mini games etc. it’s the perfect formula for a Suikoden game. I know many people have a bias for 2 since it really pulls the nostalgia, but V will always be my favorite for its mature concept. I hope once the remaster of I and II do well, they’ll remaster and port V next.

I love V. Lyon was my favorite character. It's the perfect example of bringing core gameplay mechanics from the original 2D games and modernizing it(for that timeframe). It's a love letter to Suikoden fans, and it's a shame that it's not playable on modern consoles in one way or another. I hope Konami remasters all Suikoden games.

I've been a hardcore JRPG player since i was a kid, now in my 30s, still playing JPRG a lot, but I didn't finish Suikoden V back then for reason i forgot. Played this game again after Eiyuden, and hands down this is one of the best JRPGs in term of story and SIALEEDS just skyrocketed into the no 1 video game female char of all time, not because of her appearance but because of her personality.
I was really devastated and cried when she died (the last time i cried on video game was yearsss back when Aerith died), i was pretty sure i could save her as i already got all 108 chars.
Her death was so tragic as she's the true hero who saved both Prince and Lym and she loved them more than any chars in the game, but at the end only a handful of ppl knew this and she was branded as traitor forever :( :( :(

  • @uberpinkwarrior

My first suikoden was 4, and I viewed it as... fine, but heavily flawed. My second was V, and I loved it. I loved it enough to check out the others (currently going through 1, went through tierkreis and... don't play tierkreis). Fantastic game, fantastic jrpg, not the best in the genre but it is a super fun romp through this world and a fun time in general. Way better than 4.
Also protip for anyone new: the royal knights (except debatably kyle) are all pretty OP, so a good formation is prince, 3 guards, Vikki, and then Murdercaster 9000. Dualcasts from vikki and Murdercaster 9000 will typically 1-shot entire groups of enemies, while Vikki's double casts will obliterate most everything else. Combined with some guard knights for melee output and you'll be ripping through groups with ease.

4:45 - One minor correction there. It's actually similar to Suikoden II not the first game. The first game had army battles that played out similar to duels with an RPS mechanic, while Suikoden II was the first game to have you take direct control of your units and move them around the battlefield.

    @ReyGArk Год назад +1

Gameplay-wise, Suikoden 5 is the best for me since improved on everything I loved about 2. Not only did it bring back the 6-man parties, but the formations idea was honestly brilliant. Duels were also a step up because the animation for each fights were made for each fight and watching them play out was a treat in and of itself. And the army battles? I'm a big fan of SRPGs and real time strategy games, so seeing and playing what they pulled off for 5 just brought a big smile on my face.
Storywise though, Suikoden 2 will always be number 1 for me, but I'd put Suikoden 5 as my number 3 after Suikoden 1 but tied with Suikoden 3.

I have to agree with you that this specific title is the hardest in terms of recruiting the 108 stars. It's impossible to get them all without a guide in a single play through but in terms of combat this is the easiest out of all the games. The characters you get are just too OP (Assuming you are using the correct Runes, Skill setups and Party Formation) and regular battles usually end on your second turn.
The only gripe I have about this game is the pacing. Until you reach Ceras Lake everything was just too sluggish

I'm replaying this game currently- the one thing I hate about the Army Battles is that you can tell a unit to go to a location, but they faff about running in place until reaching the right angle and then slooooowly make their way forward. Plus you have to scroll all over the battlefield and command each unit one by one while the computer controls its entire army simultaneously. It's very hard to keep up.

I am amazed that someone cared enough to put in that effort. that game is pretty much the FF13 of suikoden. Everything are just simplified and stripped to the bones. The story was "we must unite against manbearpig" and some time travelling gimmick. Most of the budget of the game probably went to the voice acting. The DS game was so much better considering the massive difference in hardware.

Suikoden V is easily my favorite of the series, but that may also be because it was my first. I've gone back and played the other games but none are as enjoyable to me as 5. In fact playing the first Suikoden game was one of the most disappointing gaming experiences I have ever had. It's not a good game. It's hardly even a passable gaming experience. So I'm shocked that people hold it in such high regard. But I am excited for the remasters of 1 and 2. I'm hoping, that with some gameplay tweaks and graphical upgrades, the first game can raise to a level of a "competent" gaming experience, even if I don't think it's possible for it to be a "great" game as fans claim it to be. And it will be nice to give Suikoden II another chance since I gave up pretty early into that game because I was so burned out after the disappointing experience of 1.

1 and 2 are top one for me, both those games goes hand in hand because of continuity and the fact that you get to play two main protag. Man Tir Mcdohl is a beast in Suikoden 2. Suikoden 5 takes top 2 then Suikoden 3 and lastly Suikoden 4.

After 1 and especially 2, Suikoden V is easily the best Suikoden game in my eyes. To me, it just lacked a story of treason or rivalry as heartbreaking as 2's. But I absolutely adore how they put the events of the game into scene.

Yes, I like Jowy better than Sialeeds, but that's not it. More importantly, I enjoy the character dynamic between Riou and Jowy better than that of Frey and Sialeeds. I think the treason story and the parallels between the rivals are far better paced and executed in 2 than in V.
But yeah, it's my take on it. You are free to prefer Sialeeds over Jowy. You may enjoy SV's conspiracies more than S2's. Just saying I like 2's more is all.

The best Suikoden for me. I love Suikoden 2 too, but V has more complete customization and battle mechanics. The storyline is superb, the music and graphic also great too. The downside of this game is only too easy. Too many OP characters that make boss battle feels like ordinary monster. The hardest boss probably only the one inside Eresh's dungeon and the final boss.

This game is PAIN. The menu feels like a Debug menu, and navigating through it takes so much time. The encounter rate is really high. The camera is fixed, making it very easy to navigate most areas, as you're constantly overlooking exits and entrances due to the perspective you're forced into. There's SO much backtracking. Story is good, though. Script is very well written, well translated, but it takes almost 15 hours to get where it needs to go. You are NOT beating this game without a guide. The dev's focus was clearly story and combat, and it does those very well.

Agreed this was probably Suikoden 5 was the best PS2 game, and probably 2nd best to Suikoden 2.
I recently replayed it (along with 4 for the first time). It was a little worse than my first play through with the game about 10 years ago. The end of the game felt like there may had been either some translation issues or maybe a hastily finished ending, as I game was trying very hard to wrap things up, but felt like it needed just a bit more time to bake (specifically Gizel's motivations / actions). I also dont think they had quite fully optimized the game engine, as some areas looked washed out and the game has some slow load times from what I recall.
Still definitely worth a play through, its probably the game most similar to 2 and one of my favorite PS2 RPGs.
