    I just want to know what person at the Sesame Street company looked at the bank that they were honouring with a fake award and went "You know who should be within 100 miles of this building when we do this? John Oliver" because either that person is blissfully innocent and must be protected at all costs or is an agent of chaos and needs to be feared and respected because they can create problems wherever they go!

      Critical thinking involves the process of listening to someone else, understanding what they say or do and then providing critical thought as to why that person behaves as they do...whether you agree with them or not.
      You cannot wave the notion of critical thinking around whilst being so close minded and not employing it yourself.

      I would argue, that if it isn't used to inform ones actions (i.e. vocalizing your formed critique) it is not useful at all.

    That's like ppl telling a homeless person on the street, "at least you don't have mortgage payments." Good intentions? Perhaps. Wrong time, wrong place to say that? Definitely.

    • @icantollie
      @icantollie 11 месяцев назад

      That actually happened. Ivanka Trump related in an interview how she and her dad once walked by a homeless person and her dad said, you know, that guy is so much better off than me, because he owes nothing (this is when Donald Trump had racked up debts from the failure of some of his business ventures)

    Not Jeff here. The buried irony of that statement was that Bank of America was founded as Bank of Italy in San Francisco by a kind man, A P Giannini. The bank catered to Giannini's people, Italian and other immigrants who were shunned by the establishment. After the 1906 earthquake, Giannini set up a plank on the street and gave handshake loans for rebuilding and handing out withdrawals. Later, he said that every loan had been paid back in full.
    He helped start a lot of iconic California companies, such as Disney and Kaiser. He bankrolled a good part of the Golden Gate Bridge. He gave a business loan to Hewlett and Packard.
    A P's late daughter, Claire, hated what Bank of America has become. She complained that the current rulers are totally against the spirit of her father. She resigned from the board in disgust in 1985.

    I don't know the full context, but Bank of America being "built on kindness" could be referring to the founder of its founder, Amadeo Giannini, who started one of the first banks catering to immigrants. He freely gave out loans after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, allowing the city to rebuild.
