I was only pointing out the slight velo difference from college to mlb. Not at all diminishing how filthy Joyce is. That violent windup coupled with that arm slot, and movement on 100-102 with wicked secondary pitches, yeah 105 doesn’t matter and totally agree with you. When he gets hit, and he will eventually, the batter will definitely be guessing and swinging into a spot. I hope the young man stays healthy, he’ll have an amazing career

That is party of what made Randy Johnson so effective. He sometimes threw deadly pitches along with his heat. Batters didn't know if they were going to live or die at the plate.

He holds his FB like a 2 seamer and when he really hurls it, that thing sails up and in to righty batters like a severly sliced golfball off the tee. God help the guy that gets 104 in the rib cage.

Relievers typically don't get drafted as high as starters. But I would've taken him earlier.

Joyce would make a better closer than a reliever. Nobody is hitting 100+ at the end of the game. At least not consistently. Angels already have Estevez as a closer as one of the best in the game but Joyce definitely shine as a closer.

If there was ever a good time for replay, it's when umps can't count! No way that should happen. I remember watching two different college football games where teams got screwed because the referee didn't do his job and flip the down marker. They said that you couldn't review that to get it right. It cost a team the game in one of them. I hate replay because it slows the games down and crushes momentum and they don't even use it on dumb shit calls like that.

Does Ben Joyce throw any breaking balls or off speeds? His highlights are always FBs with no breaking balls. Wouldn't players pick up that it's going to be a FB most the time?
He has a nice slider and a lower 90’s change up but with the heat he’s packing he can’t really polish it at the minors because the best option is the fastball so much of the time
His fb has creepy movement already. He threw 12 pitches in his debut, 11 were triple digits; the other one was 89.

Pitching Ninja, can you explain the point of an opening pitcher vs a starting pitcher? I’ve seen a couple times this year a pitcher is called an opener rather than a starter and then he pitches just the first inning and then usually a long reliever or a starter goes and pitches a normal 4-6 innings. Why put a pitcher for just the first inning whats the strategy behind it I guess
To shorten games when you don't have a starting pitcher available who can go deeper into games. Sometimes due to injuries or other reasons, a team may not have a starter who's rested enough to pitch. So you use a bunch of relievers instead, who haven't been "stretched out" to go deep into games and aren't ready to pitch 4-5 innings. Other times, they use a pitcher for the first inning to set things up for their bulk pitcher (a more well rested long reliever or starter) either because that bulk pitcher isn't as good at starting or because he'll have better matchups deeper in the lineup vs. the top 3 or 4 hitters. A bunch of various reasons for it.
