      I used the makita trim router for several years until I started doing work in the shop and upgraded to a full size Bosch and mounted it in a table. World of difference between the two

    One of my most valued display items is the mallet that Matt sent me. (His reference early in this video of giving one as a gift). Honored that he shared his craftsmanship and enjoy sharing the story of how we came to know each other as brothers in arms and Brothers in Christ. The 2019 coin also bears the name of my Brother: Maine State Police Detective Benjamin Campbell. End of Watch April 3, 2019. May he Rest In Peace.

    41:00 this is my favorite part of the whole thing. For fellow believers, we've had these types of things happen to us which are outside the realm of "it's just a coincidence". I honestly got choked up just now.
    I'm a soldier in NC, only man working today where I'm at. A few minutes ago I heard the door open up, which confused the heck outta me since nobody should be coming in. It was a coworker of mine and his boy who had decided to leave their family gathering with four plates of Thanksgiving dinner wrapped up to bring in to whoever was working.
    Celebrated Thanksgiving in Iraq once in '09. Anyways, before I get to rambling, just wanted to say it means more than I can explain in words when people do genuine acts of kindness and generosity for me just because I serve. Happy you shared this, and to anybody reading this, don't ever let anyone discourage you from sharing those acts with others on social media.
    People see it, they get inspired, they see that there's good Americans out there. That's all I want to say. Happy Thanksgiving, y'all 🇺🇲

    Hello from Canada Matt. I really enjoyed your video. I have been a professional cabinet maker and finish carpenter for 32 years. I've always enjoyed watching other woodworkers enjoy their craft and inspiring others. Keep up the good work. People need positive videos like yours in these times because there is far to much negativity and division in the world today. I'm making a mallet in my shop as I watch your video.
    Thank you.

    I know this is one of your older videos, so you’ve probably heard this tip by now, but I thought the space where the handle goes would be the perfect place to use this tip for removing squeeze out. James King uses a plastic straw to remove squeeze out in corners like that, and it works beautifully!!! Love your videos!

    I'm glad you kept the mistakes in the video. It's a good reminder to always run a scrap piece of wood through before using the high dollar exotics. Measure twice, cut once. It's a lesson we all need to remember right after always remembering safety.

  • @eddievangilder8081

    Hey Matt, those bb’s also help t alleviate rebound as the mallet strikes; just need to leave a small amount of air space in the cavity, i.e. don’t fill the hole all the way up with bb’s. You can actually buy a mallet with lose weights in it called a DEAD-BLOW hammer. A lot of farmers and truckers use them to beat on hopper bottom trailers to dislodge grain.

    Love the mallets!! Great stuff as usual.
    A couple tips that I have seen. I've done one but the other I have seen done. The first is to use a damp rag and an iron to get out the dents in the wood. The steam loosens the fibers and the dent will disappear. The second is to drill a hole at the end of your cut that your wedge will go into. That will keep the wood from splitting in the future.

  • @milesdavis220
    @milesdavis220 3 года назад +1

    From one brother in blue to another - thank you for honoring our fallen but never forgotten. Also, a tip for the clamping dents- get an old clothes iron, put a small drop of water on the dent then cover with a damp towel. hit the clothe with hot iron....the steam will lift the fibers and the dent will vanish!

    LOVE this video. I have probably watched it or parts of it over a half a dozen times this past week while making my first set of mallets.
    I layered my BB’s with glue. Like 3-4 layers of BB’s and glue. I still ended up hearing one or two roll around. I will try starting with a layer of glue first next time.

    • @731Woodworks
      @731Woodworks  3 года назад +1

      I got suggestions to use CA glue, but some say it's best if they are loose inside, because that is what creates the dead blow effect

  • @raelynnreilly6787
    @raelynnreilly6787 3 года назад +1

    A straw with one end cut diagonal to a point is excellent for glue in spots like that and on boxes. They are beautiful!!

  • @dennissosnovske5879
    @dennissosnovske5879 3 года назад +4

    With the BBs, make the hole a little larger (a third hole in the center would be good) then fill about 80% with the BBs or lead shot (better). Don’t glue it and let the shot slide around and it becomes a dead blow mallet.
    The combination of maple and Purple Heart is very pretty. Whoever gets one of these will be very happy with it!
    I made one like this a few years ago (Inspired by Steve Ramsey at WWMM). I used maple and mahogany. I weighted it with lead solder (instead of BBs). I use it for beating on everything. It is not as pretty now, but it is useful.

    Thanks. I just started making mallets, 2 so far. Watched 1/2 your video then went out and cut enough for 2 more. Thought I was cutting oak for outside layers. Got pieces over by light and discovered that they were cherry. On my 1st 2 , I cut thr shoulders on the handles, glued them and pinned center with 3/8 oak dowels. Look ok for an old geezer on his first try. Making more for gifts. I'll be using the contrasting wedge too. Love your videos and t-shirts.

    I really appreciate your love for ambrosia maple. I worked at a custom cabinets shop for a few years in my early twenties. We only used ambrosia maple as paint-grade stock. It was the ugly duckling of the shop, valued only for the straightness and density of it's grain, but I have always loved it's unique look. There is beauty in it's imperfections. Also, it has a very distinct smell when you cut it, kinda sweet and floral.

    Fix clamp dents without jointing by using a wet paper towel and a regular clothes iron. Put the paper towel over the dent and the iron over the paper towel. It will steam the water and renew the damaged grain and stand it up. Then lightly sand. Fixed!

    Brother Matt! This is so awesome! That Ten Commandments mallet is soooo fitting. We are told repeatedly in the Bible that the law was given to show us that we cannot keep the law as we are imperfect beings and to show us that we need Christ Jesus in order to receive salvation. Just goes to show one more way that God is always in control. I think the imperfect Ten Commandments mallet was God using you brother. Maybe you should make more imperfect Ten Commandments mallets as a testament to Gods covenant to us. He sent His son so that all should not perish....
    God bless you brother. I know this is an older video, but it spoke to me. Thank you. Going in for a pretty routine surgery in the morning, but I have had quite a bit of anxiety about it. I know God is in control and your video reminded me of this. We get caught up in our day to day lives and forget that He is in control and has plans for us. When I recover, I plan, by His grace, to make some mallets. Thank you Brother Matt.

    Moving into my new home on thurseday, complete with a 30x30 detached garage with electric and ac, now known as my mancave. I got a good assortment of beginner tools, saws, sanders, etc. My first project will be this mallet. Love your videos, love the way you explain your projects. So excited to begin woodworking. Thanks for sharing and inspiring.

    Hey boss, I noticed you mentioned not going all the way down to the shoulder with the wedge slot. There IS a right answer and you got it! Going all the way down to the shoulder weakens the structural integrity of the wood at that point. I’ve seen it break out axes I’ve rehandled when I started doing that, and I’ve since learned.

    I wanted to let you know I love doing some wood working but I don’t get much time to do it. My wife is running meetings and has become a president of an organization to do with her work and I wanted to make her a gift to commemorate her achievement and a mallet was a great idea. Thank you brother Matt I am in the end stages now

To find the Center you could have drawn a line corner to corner and you have the Exact center vs doing the math. Keep up the Great work. GOD Bless.

    Matt, I've enjoyed watching your channel for a while now. It's great to see more of us DIY'ers out here grinding out our side gig. You make great projects and you do it with affordable tools. There are so many channels where the tools in the shop cost more than my house. You make it enjoyable and relatable. Keep inspiring us and keep having fun!

    I'm enjoying your videos as a new woodworker more and more, and as a twenty-year Cop and (not quite that long) believer in Christ, I truly appreciate what you did hear and what you shared. I love the Christian t-shirts you wear in most of your videos, I know you referenced Relentless Defender in this video, but I saw very few Christian shirts on their site, so where are yours coming from. Oh and I love the simplicity of your plans and have already bought several. Please do a video on your organization covering the black metal "pegboard" type system that is in many of your vids.
    Thanks and keep the faith brother.

Even though the mallets are beautiful the story of how it blessed the fallen police officers brother was even more beautiful and amazing! Praise God that He knows the best ways to bless us! ❤❤

    Hey brother I just discovered your video's about 5 days ago I really enjoy them ( I think I went through most of your library, because this one has today's date lol) God bless you, they are an inspiration to me. I had a life changing event that has rendered me unable to work. I have been working since I was a little kid because I was always strong in body and soul. Now my body is broken I can't do the things I use to. I 'm grateful to the good Lord to be alive. I'm sure I was dying in the hospital but , the Lord chose to spare my life. At that moment I just prayed, "All I would ask Lord is just give me 24 hrs so I could contact my family and friends". That way they wouldn't wonder why I stopped calling all of a sudden. Worst part of my condition I don't feel productive any more. I try to force my body to heal. I think I can do some of the things you show on your channel. Life is just about starting where the Lord has you. You know start with what you have. Then the Lord will provide the rest. How bout using clear 2 part epoxy, that's like wood putty or caulking for finish work. This is not a "perfect world we live in, therefore how can anything in it be perfect. People like little imperfections, it let's them know a product was made by hand, instead of a machine. Keep up the good work ! BTW, I LIKE THOSE MALLET'S, one day I will make my own and send you one ! I really love the the mixed hardwood look on things I really want to specialize in those products. Take care
