"You wanted the best, you got t̶h̶e̶ ̶b̶e̶s̶t̶......me..."
Happy Birthday to Kiss guitarist, Ace Frehley, who was born on this day in 1951.
The song is Strutter and is off their self titled, debut album which came out in 1974. The bass was played by my first bass-hero, Gene Simmons.
I’m playing the ’76 Gibson G3 Grabber.
That is all.
Horrible. That’s NOT how to play this song.
How's that "original" paintings career going for you these days David?
Have any facts to back up that loose opinion David? I'm betting that Troy's cover is closer to the original than yours.
@@sheerluckholmes5320, haha, I just came across this.😂
I'm up there in the comments.....2 months ago... No answer yet
Sheerluck Holmes That kid was trolling ...Troy is an excellent bassist......100% accurate bass lines. Troy has 38k subscribers and the kid has 27 ....not thousand like Troy,,,,.27 total....LOL
Oh, I must apologize for just now catching this. I was loving Kiss back when everybody was into Three Dog Night.(showing my age again)
Better late than never. Haha... you and me both.
Awesome! More classic KISS.
Thanks.
Gene's bass slides are iconic. Especially on a Grabber!
Gene Simmons came up with some pretty solid bass lines. You picked a great one here, Troy, even doing the up the neck slide he was famous for back in the 70's. Love that Gibson, too. Now all ya need is to put on the makeup and do the fire and/or tongue thing and you'll get a million views on here! haha
I agree. Yeah, nothing sounded cooler than those big "Whooms" when I was a kid.
Me too, Troy!
I was just a kid 🧒🏻!
When you play close attention to Genes work, you can see he definitely knew what he was doing. Great cover as usual BTW.
He was a great rock bass player. People just hatr him because he's a bit a jerk and greedy 👀😂
Another great cover. Gene had a really cool groove. I read McCartney was his idol, probably why he had that groove!
Thanks a lot. I did not know that.
From time to time, Gene would really surprise me with some of his basslines and riffs. Love Gun has an amazingly melodic run throughout and his riffs in Detroit Rock City stumped me for more than a minute back when I played...and I was classically trained!
Yes, Gene had his moments.
haven't heard you sing in a whie Troy. We miss that lovely voice. Surprise us!!! Like this cool number. Wicked Troy!!!!!!!!!!! Marvine
No plans as of yet, but you never know. Thanks Marvine.
Now, this takes me back. I remember learning this.....in '74. Great job.
Whatever the status of Genes' playing and musical knowledge he had a huge influence on me and my love of bass. To be fair his bass lines are what the music called for. Kiss music would not be the same without it. Besides he does it all live and sings at the same time. Thumbs up to Gene and also to TJH3113. Keep the vids coming.
Me too and I agree. Thanks.
You can definitely tell he was a Paul McCartney fan.
Man I miss that bass!
I had the Grabber as a teenager, but with the brown body and the sliding soap bar pickup.
Memories.
I never fell in love with this one. I think I'd have preferred the single p/u version like you had.
TJH3113 it’s been 35 or so years, but as I remember, it was a really good sounding pickup.
My mother got it for me from a pawn shop for $125. Wish I still had it.
Like when you whip out the Grabber . Happy B Day Ace
Tha'ts what I'm talking about ! What a killer tone ! Wowwww...
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
Killer !!! You nailed the tone with that bass .
this is the best bass cover of strutter on you tube!
Thanks!
Absolutely love it!
I'm glad! Thank you!
My favorite song of all time.
Awesome!
Spot on! Like I always say, Gene Simmons is such an UNDERRATED bass player. Never got his due.
Thanks. He may not have gotten his "due", but he made up for that with $$$.
Truuuuuuuth! As people sometimes ask, "What's more important, recognition or money!?" I rest my case.
Another good cover and nice playing! I like that Gibson Grabber.
Thanks a lot.
One of the best bass tracks in the Kiss catalog! I love hearing it cranked in the mix.
Cool.
My very first vinyl was a compilation of the 1st three Kiss albums called 'Kiss The Originals' and it came in a folder style album cover. Each record had its own sleeve which had the individual album covers printed on it - Kiss, Hotter Than Hell, and Dressed to Kill. I still have it. What a fun song to play.
That bass sounds awesome! Nice playing, Troy!
Great Job Troy.
Cheers.
great job love this bass and guitar line such great grooves I'll say it again Gene never gets props for his playing one of my all time favorite bass players along with Steve Harris cliff burton and geddy
Thanks. Yeah, Gene did what he had to do and served the songs well.
Couldn't keep my feet still on this one. Loved it Troy! Thanks Marvine :-)
Careful now. Glad you liked it. Thank you Marvine.
Love it when you sing with the song!!!!!! I like seeing your face too!!!!! :-)
And ladies and gentlemen that was art beautiful man
Thanks.
Love the bass! Thanks for always being my go to guy for bass covers! You are awesome
Your video descriptons are as entertaining as the videos themselves. Even short ones like this. Great choice, great tone. Congratulations.
Kiss was my favorite band until I took an older friends advice and bought Rush chronicles. So after listening to those two albums for a couple days Rush became my favorite band. I was 15 or 16 then and I am 39 now. :)
Great to hear. Thanks.
Gene Simmons Bass riff extraordinaire !
Yes!
Nice Cover.. I grew up listening to kiss in the late 70's.
Happy Birthday ACE !!
Thanks. Me too.
I love your video man, congratz you are really god musician
Thanks for sharing this bad azz cover! And I dig the retro Grabber bass.
Outstanding! Great sound!
always wanted a grabber...great cover man. 🖒
Thanks.
Yeah!! Loved this, Troy. Right on!
Thanks, I'm glad.
It's very cool that you use "appropriate" basses. I think your Top 50 Bands list looks alot like mine.
Man I love the variety of songs you pick Troy, great playing and tone as always. Thanks for all your videos :)
@tjh3313 Awesome!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Thanks.
My first bass hero as well.
Right on!
Thomas Till he was also the reason I picked up a bass all those years ago
Awesome . Brings back memories of my late dad playing. I still have his perfect 59 p bass if interested.
Still loving your play throughs man. I'd like to see your interpretations of Goin' Blind and Dirty Livin'....both have nice melodic lines.
Thanks. I try and check them out.
Sickk
Thanks
Another great cover...Whenevr you have covered a song i need to learn for any upcoming shows, i always watch your vids to learn the song because you always nail it. Double thumbs up to you mate!
magnifica, estupendo groove , saludos desde México ♫♪
¡Muchos gracias!
Was never meant as a personal attack, or even an attack at all. Keep up the great work!!
I know, I think it just got misinterpreted. I don't have a problem if a person feels strongly about something. Once, on TalkBass, I mentioned how I thought that Pino Palladino had a much stronger voice on the fretless and that I thought he sounded pretty pedestrian on the fretted. Oh boy! Then there was the time I questioned the abilities of Lemmy...that was on Facebook and was much worse.
Ouch right on...I never got why Townsend wanted him to fill Entwistle's shoes. I very much dug Palladino's work on many songs ( fretless) but was mystified when we saw The Who with him onboard.
Not bad by any means but for those of us aching to hear "Who bass" a real flat experience. Clearly Roger and Pete want him there so...
Lemmy is a state of mind more than a bassist per se... (just my 2 c)
Still watched his documentary on Netflix!
Strutter?!! Excellent!
Great stuff!
Thanks!
Great cover as always. I also cut my teeth listening to kiss and good bad or indifferent loved watching and listening to Simmons. I know I keep asking but here goes again please do a cover of dirty livin from the dynasty album, it has in my opinion simmons' best bass line.
Thanks a lot. I'll check it out, but no promises.
Ha! Even playing a Gibson! Respect to gene Simmons, I've always loved his playing. He's no Jaco Pastorius and thank God! I don't like boring overplaying
One of my favorite bass lines. Nice job!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Usted es mi ídolo!. Quisiera tocar como usted!. Un saludo desde Venezuela.
Ace was always the coolest Kiss member.
I guess it would depend on who you asked.
Very pleasing bass line. Makes me wonder if you ever play fretless bass?
Regards Mark in the UK
Nice!
Make sure Gene gets his royalties check 💰💰
Best most accurate cover on yt!
Wow, thanks!
Really like your vids. Been real help
I'm very happy to hear that. Thanks for letting me know.
Dude love the tone. I got a 78 grabber but it dont sound like that. Awsome
I'm glad you liked it. This is the 3 p/u G3 Grabber which I wound up selling. I think I would have been better off with the single/sliding p/u Grabber.
great!
This groove made me starting to like Kiss. Detroit RC also.
You have a good ear....Always like your posts. I cheat and copy your bass lines to learn songs (I play with my fingers) Love to see you cover "The Rover"" Led Zeppelin. Nothing on you tube for a bass cover. Some chromatic walking.
not a big kiss fan, but i quite enjoyed that. very well done. may try to learn the song soon
Me neither, but it's a cool bass line. Get on it.
Gene played all those walking bass lines while singing harmony
Yup!
Love it! Sounds great mate :)
Thanks.
Love the "spACE" man!
Yeah, Ace seems to be many people's favorite member of the group.
Bad Ass man!!!
Thanks.
Great over!
Thanks.
Grabber G-3? I had one of those in maple back in the day, wasn't my favorite bass but it had its moments.
The first song of the first LP (02/1974). Depuis toutes ces années, je me suis rendu compte que la basse n'est pas aussi simple que ça. J'essaye. Encore merci.
Ouais, Gene n'est peut-être pas l'homme le plus gentil mais ce n'est pas un bassiste épouvantable.
Hi Troy, some wanna argue, so pointless...great cover anyway
cheers mate :)
FINALLY
That Ripper or a Grabber? Such a beautiful headstock.. And nice sound, dude!
It was a G3 Grabber. I'm glad you liked it.
Its better and better
Thanks
Awesome! but you are the best,,i grew up with kiss and Gene Simmons was so cool !
Thanks Cindy.
Awesome. how about I stole your love!!!!!!!
Thanks. I'll think about it.
Great Job on ALL your covers Sir. But I HAVE to ask...Where in the Hell are you getting all these Beautiful Basses you use in your videos??? LOL! Your making me jealous. Do you own these? Because like...WOW! Keep up the great work. Enjoy!
Thanks a lot. I do own most of them. There are a few that were loaned to me by my brother-in-law, but those are the rare and expensive ones. Coming up on three years ago, I began collecting some of the basses from my past - some of the ones I owned and loved, as well as a few that I just always wanted and never had the opportunity to own. Fortunately, my taste in instruments was never terribly extravagant.
excellent troy, do you do any cars covers?
Thanks. No, I haven't yet. I was messing around with "Bye Bye Love" a while back, but there were a few weird timing things, if I remember correctly.
Any chance you can do an ELO song? most of their songs are very underrated for the bass.
Shine A little Love or Last Train To London off Discovery....great tunes, great bass!
hi Troy. Is the 3113 in your profile homage to one of the greatest Rush albums of all time? Of course Moving Pictures is pretty darn good too!!! Wore that cassette right out back in the day!
Hi! Yes, because I thought I was the first person to ever think of using "2112" in their username/e-mail address and was sorely mistaken. After trying many, many combinations I gave up and went 1,001 years into the future while incorporating my fondness for Halloween and Horror, in general.
cool. very similar to 1313 Mockingbird Lane in a way
@@deme7063, exactly. Wasn't sure if you'd get the "13" reference.
hey, speaking of 1,001 years into the future, 100,000 years from Alive is one heckuva cool kiss song to jam with if you ever feel up to it
subele el volumen a la wea, buen tema en todo caso
Gracias.
is the song in a different octave or something? It sounds higher. Regardless great cover.
I forgot to mention that my friend, JimmyJames brought the song up to concert pitch for me. They usually detuned a half-step and I hate tuning down.
I think Troy gets the least likes if anyone i've ever seen in YT. All his covers are freakin awesome
I have to agree with you, my like/dislike ratio is extremely favorable and usually falls into the 99%+ range. Thank a lot, Joe!
Troy, did you buy a Grabber just for Kiss songs ???? If so, that is dedication to authenticity.
I got the Grabber because that was the first bass that I REALLY, REALLY wanted when I was a kid. I also happened to be a big KISS fan at the time. I think I would have been much happier with the sliding/single pick-up version.
@@TJH3113 Nice ! I bought the first bass that I wanted, a 77 Music Man Sting Ray.
Before that I detuned a Fender Mustang guitar for basslines.
nice! Down tune? thx and good job.
That bass sounds great. What gauge strings are you using?
Thanks. I've since sold it. It was a beautiful bass, it was just the least played. All my basses are strung with D'Addario EXL200's.
What do you think about Gene Simmons as a bass player?
😙😙😙😙😙😙
*D ÅV I E 5 0 4*
.
Been away for a while... What happened to your Fender basses?
Gene is a very sneaky player
He is, isn't he?
@@TJH3113 yes. Cause of you i just started learning KISS songs and let me tell you, he can definitely play. I thought he was just another Bobby Dall from poison but i was wrong. Lol
@@TJH3113 another thing i noticed, he can play with fingers and pick both. Watch his 80s stuff with no makeup
TJH3113, why dont you play Kiss songs with pick like Gene simmons? Pick gives another sound.
Because I can't play with a pick. If I could, I definitely would.
He also forgot to mention it's played a half step down 4:30 instead of 4:40
Thanks. I don't remember, but the recording may have been brought up to concert pitch.
What position did you have the pickup selector switch on for this?
All three p/u's were selected.
Who are all those attractive faces behind you?
Most ore from DeathStudios.
I don't know if I've ever seen a bass with 3 single coils.
Yeah, three pick-ups on a bass is pretty unusual, but there are some.
Confused, thought this song was in B♭?
Yes, in the original song , Kiss tune 1/2 step down but his cover sounds like standard tuning.
Do you still have this Bass ?
No, I do not. I didn't really care for the way it sounded.
The Many Faced God plays bass?
