In the stories, Holmes often criticizes Watson's "florid, romantic" versions of what he thinks should be written as scientific studies on investigative techniques.

    Moriarty dies in the Holmes canon, in _The Final Problem,_ which was also his first appearance. He's just such a memorable villain, featured in so many adaptations and parodies, fans forget he was only in one story and died at the end.

      Who is also in one of the stories: The Empty House, where he brings Holmes back, the villain and part of the reason he's been in hiding pretending to be dead is the Colonel, who'd been watching them from the cliff, so he knew what had happened between Holmes and Moriarty.

      They also forget Irene Adler was also in only one story and honestly not as important as almost every adaptation makes her out to be. Though I actually liked her in these films so I'm annoyed they killed her off (at least Mary was pretty cool)

    • @pinkies26k
      @pinkies26k 6 лет назад +32

      Miyanoai14 but she's mentioned many times in few other chapters. That's why she's memorable since Sherlock isn't fond of any other female except her. She's one of the many few that can outwit him. I dare say she's the only *female* that outwitted him

      Moriarty is alluded to in the last Holmes novel, The Valley of Fear (set chronologically before The Final Problem), as well as a few other stories. In most of those, Holmes either laments that there's no one of Moriarty's caliber still running around, or mocking the pretenders to his throne.

  • @alphaxtitania5597
    @alphaxtitania5597 6 лет назад +51

    I actually really liked the final fist fight between Sherlock and Moriarty. The way Moriarty interjected into Sherlock's usual fight prediction, and then the two of them casually conversing on how the fight would play out was chilling.

      "Why would you keep writing a book you’re tired of writing?"
      Doyle could have simply stopped writing, despite the pleas from eager fans. That would have been fine. He didn't need to kill of Holmes. Killing off a main character for a good reason is fine, but killing them off because you're tired of writing them or just can't thing of anything interesting to with them is lame, especially because later you end up retconning their death when you've got new ideas for the character.

She tries to help Holmes throughout his fight with the Cossack but he's utterly incapable of finding ways to take advantage of her "help"
      -The use of the machine gun on the train, as well as the bomb near the opera house, is perfectly accounted for: Moriarty uses fake anarchist attacks to hide his smaller crimes, to divert attention away from himself and exacerbate global tensions for his endgame. Much of his scheme is set up well in advance.

    American Turkeys were already commonplace throughout Europe by the mid 1500s thanks to a man by the name of William Strickland, who was so beloved for his introduction of the turkey to Europe that his award of arms involved the blazon of a turkeyfowl.

    • @blupunk01
      @blupunk01 5 лет назад +1

      True they were commonplace, however...
      www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-humber-20672110
      Strickland is said to have continued in the turkey trade and is reputed to have made so much money that he was able to build a stately home in Boynton, near Bridlington, East Yorkshire.
      The current owner of Boynton Hall is Richard Marriott, a descendant of Strickland.
      "Unfortunately, there is no real proof that he was the original man who brought the turkey into England," he said.
      "He is reputed to have sailed with one of the Cabots out of Bristol, but unfortunately we cannot make the facts fit the story.
      "I am sure there must be something there which links him more positively with the story of the turkey but it is very, very difficult to pin down a provable historical fact."

    Biggest Sin: The fisherman and the fish example. Sherlock put the fisherman and fish drawing in the notebook AFTER Moriarty made the analogy during the torture scene just so Sherlock could instantly travel back in time and make those drawings to be revealed in the ending scene. Genius! NOT!

    • @theactualbajmahal833

      Actually though, the fishing references in the torture scene are there because of the Shubert piece playing on the phonograph and that was the same piece playing back in London, in Moriarty's study, when "the game" first began. Holmes made that little animation as a response to the London meeting, not the later torture.

    There is actually nothing wrong in the fight scene and subsequent death of Moriarty, and Sherlock faking his own death, IF you know the source material.
    Truth is, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a bit fed up with writting Sherlock Holmes' stories, so he killed him during a fight with Moriarty, where they both fell off a cliff. Later, du to the pression of the readers, he had to find a way to bring Sherlock back to write more stories.
    Nothing wrong either with the secret room. Sherlock has demonstrated many times that kind of observation skills in the books. Shit, even I demonstrated that kind of observation skills on a few occasions, it's not THAT amazing.
    However, the incorrect flag and time-displaced pistol were not sinned, the turkey was sinned despited it being commonly found in Europe for about 2 centuries before the story's time... Get your shit together, Cinemasins ! I know you're nitpicking assholes, but you used to nitpick about relevant things, while this is just lazy.

      I'll never fully enjoy a Sherlock TV show or movie. In the books you get details and logical thought processes. In the movies it's just said that they made some observation or deduction. In the books the real magic for me is the explnation and the fact that if I reread I realize I could've made the same deductions myself in some cases.

Coca leaves in this film, something that is used for eye surgeries (cocaine hydrochloride) in the previous. Cinemasins should've of just said "Sounds like the Mickey Rourke meal plan."

    • @matohibiki

      Coca leaves when cooked to be caramelized are eaten in south america to help ward off altitude sickness, and can make you quite hyper when too many are consumed.
      I mean, I wouldn't put it past Holmes to try making his own version of coke, but I believe the general idea in the film was that Holmes was scoffing down every kind of (non-drug, caffine notwithstanding) stimulant he could get his hands on.

      luckyinugirl they announced a third movie when A Game Of Shadows came out. It’s just that they weren’t able to shoot it yet because of RDJ’s busy schedule and because they had trouble figuring out a satisfying plot that would do the previous movies (and the cliffhanger) justice and not taint their Sherlock Holmes franchise. The third movie is set to release in December 2021 so they’ll probably already start the production this year. In that case RDJ will be 55/56 years old during the shooting, which is a somewhat old age but I don’t think it would exhaust him too much. After all he’s done a lot of his Iron Man/Sherlock Holmes stunts thus far and he’s regularly practiced Martial Arts for about 20 years now so it’s save to say he probably stayed fit enough to portray such a physical role despite his age.

    Moriarty and Holmes falling to their deaths is taken from the book "The Final Problem" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The book is Moriarty's first and only appearance in the series.

    Jeez Jeremy, you really don't like these movies
    I think they give the character a well deserved twist by exploring his mentioned physical feats that were actually hinted in the novels. After so many damn iterations of the character throughout the years this is a welcomed change.
    Plus, the cast's chemistry and the antagonist is freakin awesome.

      It's irrelevant to the novels. The movies are pretty ridiculous... Sherlock is basically turned into a super human.
      And actually even if you take into account the novels, those movies are still pretty bad and ridiculous.

    • @wierdalien1

      Bubbling Waffle the novels show him to be a super man anyway. What this does better than the tv show is making sherlock actually care about watson.

    Fun fact: these Sherlock Holmes movies were produced by RDJ's wife Susan Downey. And there is a 99.99% chance that the reason a third movie is in the works because RDJ complained that he is no longer iron man to said wife.
