    I will never understand people who complain about a movie being 'too long' when we live in a culture where many people will binge watch whole series in a few days while remaining almost entirely immobile. Those seem like contradictory things for me.

    • @TheJipino
      @TheJipino 8 лет назад +120

      +Juxtavarious Long movies aren't necessarily bad, it's just that this movie contains many scenes and shots that it could do without.

    • @Juxtavarious
      @Juxtavarious 8 лет назад +32

      Right, but he calls anything over 90 minutes bloated quite an awful lot. I don't doubt that this is in fact more than a little bloated, but length shouldn't be the only factor in that.

    • @TheJipino
      @TheJipino 8 лет назад +4

      +Juxtavarious Could you tell me which movies? Maybe they're just bad movies overall in his opinion. If that is the case, then any movie that is kind of long is too long.

      +Juxtavarious I don't think that this movie is too long anyway, haha. But I think that's because it kept me interested throughout, whereas I was really bored during the Hobbit.

      Shows his thinking and inner thoughts, his trial of thoughts and his goals/ambitions. That exact seen in the purgatory was because he wished he could be captain of the black pearl. He wishes he could have his life in order. The flying dutchmen cell scene was about him realising the last bit of his plan went a little sideways as others have finally caught onto his grand scheme, Or is it implied...

    9:48 The Black Pearl was once an EIT co. ship called the "Wicked Wench" which Cuttler Beckett used to trade slaves. Jack inherited the ship from the previous Captain, and then freed the slaves and took the ship for his own. It was the fastest ship ever created as to outrun the Spanish.
    The Interceptor from the first movie (the one Jack steals) was the second fastest ever created. It was modeled after the Wicked Wench/Pearl, but wasn't quite the same, and didn't quite get the same speed out of it that the Pearl did.
    The Wicked Wench was sunk by Beckett at which point Jack made a deal with Davy Jones. Davy Jones then raised the Wench from the dead and imbued it with his "ghostly magic" (the same magic that powers his own ship; The Flying Dutchman) to allow it to continue to sail even without proper sails (you'll notice that the sails in the first movie are all torn up.) and allow it to travel under the cover of fog. (Hence the fog whenever it was around in the first movie)
    Jack's original deal was to be Captain of the ship for 13 years, but was mutinied after 2 by the hands of Barbossa.
    So no.. In the 14 years since the Black Pearl was created, there hadn't been a ship built that was as fast as it. One came close, but wasn't able to beat it's speed. Not to mention it had the Davy Jones magic attached to it until it was destroyed again in the second movie.

    • @tobykester6980
      @tobykester6980 Год назад +10

      Wow. You laid out the whole story of the Black Pearl. But you forgot one thing: the Pearl, after it was raised, received the ability to go even faster with the with the wind. That is how the Pearl caught up to the Interceptor in the first movie, 'cause, I am not sure if anyone noticed but the Pearl was gaining on it, but it took a moment. That is because the Interceptor was the fastest ship in the Caribbean, and the Black Pearl was a myth to many, except those who the Pearl attacked.

    • @simpleviewer1334
      @simpleviewer1334 Год назад

      If I remember right, the Pearl has no enchantments, it was the ludicrous amount of sails it had for its size and yeah maybe it had Jones Magic but it still was fast and had the enchantment after the Kraken destroyed it in the second movie. In the fifth movie the ship was yellowish with white sails, but since the ship was burned, it was revived with charred wood and scorched sails, thus it was black

    Fun fact: that Jack/Beckett scene DID have a bunch cut from it, which explained how before the Black Pearl was the Black Pearl, it was Jack's ship that was destroyed by the East India Trading company, because he'd rescued 100 slaves that Beckett told him to transport. "People aint cargo mate," as he says. Then Jack makes a deal with Jones to bring back his now scorched ship, which was I believe was previously named the Wicked Wench, and thus the 100 souls price of Jack's own soul. He saved 100 souls and thus must condemn it, cause Jones is an asshole. It also has some fun Jack-isms, as well as giving Beckett a little more relatability. Brings the scene up to about 5 ish minutes, which they coulda cut elsewhere.

  • @user-nj4ln5xl6p
    @user-nj4ln5xl6p 5 лет назад +471

    0:30 Beckett wanted them to sing. That's why he let him sing. The English don't do anything without orders as you can see in the scene where their 100cannon ship gets destroyed.

    • @hntrl8880
      @hntrl8880 4 года назад +51

      The scene was deleted because it removes any lingering doubt of Jack's self-serving nature. It was important for the narrative that Jack could cross anyone at any time and serve himself. While the reason why he became a pirate is very cool, it screws up the rest of the film because it becomes clear that he's a good, self-sacrificing soul. It would've made his character too cemented in the moral sense, which wouldn't work for the movie -- he needed to be kept in the line of being a chaotic neutral hero.

      3 stories of canons, a lot more than either the pearl or the Dutch man. He still had the upper hand so that scene doesn't make any sense. I admit it looked good but difficult to enjoy because of its ridiculousness.

      ...are you kidding? The final battle was my LEAST favorite part of the whole movie (and I hated the movie)... the battle makes no sense, the characters are randomly thrown from one side to the other depending on random deals that have no weight or significance and they undercut so much of the tension of the scene with that bullshit with the pirate lords beforehand, especially ending with that stupid squeaky voice joke... the insane physics, the slapstick nature of the action, the fact NONE of the other ships in the massive armada did anything the whole time, the fact that we really have no reason to care about anything but the safety of a couple main characters and based on the rest of the movie that's not much motivation (everyone important either gets resurrected or has some ridiculous turn of events keep them out of harm's way), the random wedding thrown in the middle, the fact that the reveal that Will needs to captain the Dutchman is super overly foreshadowed and not surprising... that battle is a climax for a half dozen under developed story lines to get wrapped up all at once in (at least for me) a thoroughly unsatisfying and rushed manner... the 2nd and 3rd pirates movies made the same mistake as the matrix sequels... trying WAYYYYYYYY too hard to "out do" themselves and add sone new gimmick every time, instead of following the story's natural progression...

    10:15 there actually is some extended and alternate dialogue for this scene and it is GOLD. it touches on Jack and Beckett's history with each other which is told in more detail in the book The Price of Freedom, but in short Jack used to work for the EITC as captain of the Wicked Wench (now called the Black Pearl) but when Beckett gave him a cargo of slaves, Jack set them free. Beckett responded by burning the Wicked Wench which sent it and Jack to Davy Jones (this is where Jack's debt comes from). the extended scene doesn't tell this whole story mind you, but there are some really fantastic lines referencing it. the most iconic is when Beckett says, "I contracted you to deliver cargo on my behalf; you chose to liberate it," to which Jack replies, "people aren't cargo, mate." my personal favorite is Jack's response to Beckett's line, "your good deed cost me, Jack": "and you have spared me any possibility of ending up as anything other than what I am, and for that I truly thank you." for all the complaints people have about the pirates movies being too long, there are so many deleted scenes that completely change the perspective of plot points or characters, or just add layers that personally I can't get enough of, like the map symbolism in the alternate ending of Dead Man's Chest or the "no truth at all" scene from Curse of the Black Pearl

    To release calypso, she has to have all 9 of the pieces returned to her. In order for her strength to be returned, her soul has to be completely intact, kind of similar to the whole Harry Potter thing where Voldemort was split into 8 pieces. But in this franchise, there’s a second step, which is to release her. Davy Jones used his love to break her, so someone who loves her has to release her. Ragetti is in love with the Goddess Calypso.

      The length also helps the movie a lot. The parts explaining the leadup to who and what calypso is helps develop the battlefield where they fought in a storm over the maelstrom, and which of course cinemasins cuts out the moment when one of becketts men says to Davy that he’s mad for sailing into the maelstrom, meaning there was reason as to why the entire armada didn’t come to attack. And then when they battled endeavor, the rest of the boats didn’t move an inch because they saw two ships of immortality coming their way, which was explained throughout the film. Even though this is a long ass movie, it was made expertly and perfectly, to show every aspect of this reality.

    I'm gonna be that guy and say that this movie was actually great. Sure, the plot was overlengthy and convoluted to hell, but that just makes it excellent to rewatch, the acting is top notch (obviously, same cast) and CGI is really good. And frankly, I don't think it lacks the mindless swashbuckling fun of the first movie, it's just coupled to some more somber themes. Also, I think POTC actually needed the background mythology, it's just one of those universes I never get tired of living in and needed more of. So there it is. I loved this movie to shreds, now you can shoot me. That is, unless you've got wet powder...

    • @devingiannini2077
      @devingiannini2077 8 лет назад +11

      ...I have no problem with a complex story... if it makes sense... one (somewhat obvious when you think about it) thing that completely fucks up the entire mythology about the pirate lords... Barbossa was Jack's first mate and then led a mutiny to take over the black pearl... Jack spends years trying to get the ship back... so at no time are they both captains of different ships and crews... so why on earth would they both be pirate lords? And if each pirate lord only has one of the pieces of eight then how do they have 2 between them? I could have bought that either of them was a pirate lord, but both is impossible based on the story thus far... but they crammed it in anyway so the other characters would have a reason to "need" both of them there for the climax... complicated is ok for plots... just so long as there is SOME level of internal consistency

    • @fenryrgreyback1298
      @fenryrgreyback1298 8 лет назад +30

      Actually, a novel published in 2011 (The price of freedom) gives a backstory to Barbossa and Jack and explains how the former got his piece of eight from the previous pirate lord of the Caspian. And when he was handed the piece of eight, cpt Teague told him it would be really important to have later, without further explanation. Hector Barbossa came to be Sparrow's mate later, but before that he was indeed captain of his own ship, the Cobra. It's a long story (go see POTC wikia which explains the thing in the tiniest detail).

    This movie makes me wonder why they though the 4th was bad. It was the movie that brought back the CLASSIC pirate plot! Pirates try to get to some legendary treasure, race against other pirates or the royal navi, we have mermaids, fountain of youth, Character go from A to B, pass on C on their way back...And its just pirate lore! Mermaids, Fountain of Youth, Blackbeard, voodoo...what is to complain about the 4th movie is beyond my understanding. perhaps Jack was a little too over-the-top, but i think they were compensating for the lack of Will and Elizabeth taking mot scenes we would rather have jack in the previous 2 movies.
    And by the way, at 7:16. before skipping, you should have sinned (or un-sinned) barbosa for finaly pulling the classic pirate's "Arrr"

      for some reason, its the one I most remember xD The begging, with Jack as a judge was comedy gold, the relationship of Jack and the daughter of Blackbeard was actualy interesting, barbosa got a really new character deloptment, going from the proud, chest-puffing pirate captain to a crippled, wounded men trying what it takes to survive, again, the plot was closer to the ACTUAL pirate lore with mermaids, blackbeard, etc. Maybe it was forgettale in comparison to how the second and third movie were so over-the-top.

    - Both Gibbs and Beckett say the wind is on their side
    - Will was seriously about to leave for 10 years without kissing Elizabeth goodbye
    - Near the end of the movie, Jack says "Granted, it tends to list to port.." but sailors always refer to their ship as "she"

      And as for cutting the cannons loose, that's actually where the saying "loose cannon" originates from - it doesn't mean a gun/cannon that fires unpredictably, it means one that comes loose and damages the ship and crew from rolling around unsecured. Having a dense chunk of cast iron weighing several tons tearing around the inside of a wooden hull with lots of relatively fragile instruments and humans about, is a recipe for disaster. You wouldn't do it with one intentionally, certainly not a lot of them.

    3:18, at that distance with muskets, you're right for the wrong reason. The swords have the win. A musket is hilariously inaccurate and slow to reload compared with modern firearms, and bayonets aren't much use in that cramped an area. So the answer is, swords should be winning hands down after the first 30 seconds.

      Devin Gendron muskets weren't as inaccurate as you might think, they were still not very accurate, but the lack of effectiveness is mostly because people didn't want to shoot to kill other people. From the distance of between 5-20 feet (2-5 meters) a musket should be able to hit a 2 foot target (pretty good approximation for area that would be aimed for on a person's chest) with decent consistency.

      In a world with ghosts, curses, and squid monsters, I think anything goes and this movie doesn’t need to have a single ounce of realism

      @MightyCaesar37 Imagine thinking morality in the old days was present enough for humans not to be bloodthirsty. Buddy with all the colonizing and slavery of those days absolutely majority wouldn't mind shooting and killing others. They simply sucked at doing it.

    7:47 has anyone noticed that even though Elizabeth's father is 20 feet away from the ship, she can still hear his inside-voice?
