  • I've been waiting for years to capture a DC-10 water tanker, but this Convair CV-580 is just as lovely.

ANY DAY you can see a CV-580 flying is a lovely day! I'm also astounded that after all this time there are still CV-580's working and paying the bills. I follow one out of south tx that is hauling car parts I think. I'm hoping to get some pic one day if he comes to my area. Thanks for posting and sharing.

Convair propeller thrusted aircraft. I'm always astounded, that these birds are still airworthy, and in regular use. When I was a kid (I'll be frank, I'm age 74), Delta Airlines flew the Convair 440 (Radial Piston Engine) too and from my city's commercial airport, but I hadn't, in those days, flown in one of them. United Airlines, used the DC-6-B, and TWA used the Lockheed Standard Constellation. Then in 1976, I was taking pictures for a local Jr. Babe Ruth Baseball All Stars (15 Yrs. Olds) and they were good enough to reach the Jr. Babe Ruth World Series at Pueblo, Colorado. We flew out from Fort Wayne, IN., to South Bend, IN. on a United flight, which was a B-737-200, and then onto Denver. There we changed flights and Airline service to the 'Old' Frontier Airlines on a 737-200 (the current Frontier is a rebirth), and on into Pueblo. The lads lost two games in a row, and were eliminated. Next day, the team's adult organizers, along with the Babe Ruth League administration, found the Frontier return flights to Denver, and the connection on United, back to Fort Wayne. I mention flights, plural, because the aircraft were two Convair 440s. We didn't fly very high on the way to Denver, and we crisscrossed the exited path of a thunder storm, wherefore the ride was quite bumpy because of all of the choppy air currents. Some of the parents of the team members, who weren't regular flyers were in, what I like to describe as, white knuckle mode. They just couldn't wait, to plant their soft soled foot enclosed shoes, on the tarmac at Denver.

Thats a pretty cool conversion, now if they'd just put a swing tail on one like that you'd have the perfect Alaskan Airplane, you could haul freight, fuel or a freight and fuel combination. I'll bet with 500 gallons of fuel oil in the belly tank, you could still haul a few tons of freight in the cabin area.
