Jewish person here, but this is a Christmas song. It's on the theme of gifts being given to the infant Jesus, the most famous of which are the Gifts of the Magi, but this is meant to make a contrast between the opulent gifts of those wise men and the fact that the humble drummer boy had no gift but his music, and yet it was acceptable. We used to sing this in Girl Scouts when we went caroling for charity in the days leading up to Christmas. Yes, definitely a U.S. location, probably outside of Los Angeles, where PTX have been based since their early days as a group. There are arid hills and mountains like this a short distance from the city.

I don't know if you're a fan of The Beach Boys but their song " God Only Knows " is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Simply written but so touching. PTX has it as a Christmas song. Paul McCartney and others have said it was the greatest songs ever written.

Yes, Little Drummer Boy is VERY MUCH a Christmas song, as it tells the story of a young boy who has no gift to give the Baby Jesus except playing his drum for him. Hallelujah is very much NOT a Christmas song (it's not religious in any way). The video is shot at Griffith Park on a mountain overlooking downtown Los Angeles in the background. Kevin does NOT sing bass, he is a high tenor. If you are hearing two bass lines, it's Avi and Scott. All of Pentatonix's albums are available as CDs and as downloads thru many services and online retailers.

This was the song that made my hubby a fan. Then he showed me and made ME a fan. They really are fantastic, aren't they?
A Christmas one that they do which doesn't seem to get reacted much to is Carol of the Bells. I watch a lot of reactors for PTX, and I think I've seen maybe three of four max react to that one. And its amazing. I'm always shocked at how low long Mitch can sing without taking a breath. Anyway, if it's not on your list, could you add it, please?
But I'll be watching all your PTX stuff, so there's no rush. 😊

PTX have time and again taken a titled old song which I’ve heard countless times and didn’t think too much of and turned it into something that makes me sit up and take notice. I truly never have viewed this one the same way since I saw their version. I’ll confess that John Lenin’s “Imagine” has taken on a new meaning (to me, at least) since they turned their attention to it. Maybe it’s just me.

This was the first song I heard from Pentatonix. And it is unquestionably a Christmas song. (A couple of the verses left out of this version make it even more clear, but the allusion is to the three kings with their offerings, and a child who can only offer a gift of music.) The Epiphany may be January 6th, but it's still Christmas.

And as to your question about buying albums, I have purchased every Pentatonix album through Apple Music /iTunes. It is possible to buy physical CDs, but not everyone has a CD player anymore (my laptop lacks one, although my desktop has one). One of the Pentatonix albums had a special edition (sold only at Target) which had a bonus track; that was only sold as a CD.

Nice reaction. Thanks. They did an amazing job with the song and video. Interestingly, Scott and Kevin said in an interview that the band was initially not happy with it after they did it and shelved it for about a month. Later, they revisited the song and the band decided to release it. After the response, they were happy that they did release it.

To me, this is 100% a Christmas song. It was also the first song I ever heard by Pentatonix, and I was amazed how they took a simple, somewhat repetitive and easily recognized seasonal mainstay, and without changing it in any major way, made it so interesting to listen to... with just their voices. And Kevin's brilliance, of course. I have been a fan ever since. Thanks for reacting to this one. It's like revisiting a first love.

As others have said, Kevin is not a bass, and all the bass in this song belongs to Avi. I would point out that, after each of the duets he does with Scott, he immediately and seamlessly drops 2 octaves from what's basically a tenor part to his usual bass. Additionally, "Hallelujah" is not a Christmas song, and I've never understood why PTX put it on their Christmas album. There's plenty of writing out there about Leonard Cohen, the song's composer, and how he was an atheist and only used a few biblical references to make certain points or paint certain pictures in listeners' minds.

    • @amandapruner9860
      @amandapruner9860 3 года назад

I think the part he is talking about is Kevin's throat bass. He does it at 6:50-7:03 and then again around 7:25 and it is definitely not Avi cause Avi is singing. I think. I could be wrong.Don't get me wrong I hate when Kevin gets credit for Avi's parts but I do believe he is talking about Kevin's throat bass. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Hey Charlotte, the story I've heard about Hallelujah being on the Christmas album is that Pentatonix had intended to record one of the Christmas versions of the song. Over 80 different additional verses have been written and published to Hallelujah since Cohen's original song. Some of these verses were written by Cohen himself, while many others have been written by other songwriters. Some verses include actual gospel lyrics and some include Christmas lyrics. When Pentatonix contacted the publishers about recording the song, they were told that Cohen was only allowing versions to be recorded at that point that used his original lyrics. They wanted the song so badly that they agreed to record it that way, but still put it on A Pentatonix Christmas as originally planned. Because of their habit of putting one or two non-seasonal songs on each Christmas album, it worked in their favor.

This is truly a Christmas song. It’s about a little poor boy, with nothing, was “called” to come to the Nativity where Jesus was born. Originally performed by the von Trapp family singers which are the Austrian family portrayed in the Sound of Music. I don’t think they wrote it. I remember hearing a teacher wrote the song but I’m not sure. It also had a different name in the beginning but I can’t remember what it was or who changed it. I do remember the song being part of a tiny budget video about a Shepard boy who is called to Jesus. (Nope - can’t remember the name of the movie) In my defense I was extremely young but yeah, life can give you so many wonderful memories and it also chips away with them when you are stressed. 🥁✌️💚

I have bought and listen to ALL of their albums because I LIKE buying the CD! I like having the actual object in my hands, in my car. (I'm about to celebrate my 73rd birthday, so perhaps this gives you a clue. I like the tech that ruled from the late seventies through the first decade of the 21st century.) Pentatonix makes contemporary music accessible to me. Even if I don't know the song, I can hear the words, because PTX knows lyrics are important to appreciation of the total song, so they all make an effort to enunciate precisely. In any case, you can buy the CD's during the winter holiday season in many mainline department stores. Some of us prefer the sound. I keep hoping they will continue this habit.

The Little Drummer Boy is a Christmas song. It is literally about bringing gifts to baby Jesus in the manger.
Hallelujah isn't a Christmas song, it's just on a Christmas album like God Only Knows, Once Upon A December, My Favorite Things and a few others PTX likes to mix it up with. Hallelujah isn't even really religious. It uses imagery from the Bible, which confuses people, but it isn't about God or faith or any of that.

I know many of these types of songs get roped in as “Christmas” songs but I think most of them aren’t. If you really pay attention to the lyrics they rarely have anything to do with celebrating Santa. 🤣
I’m an atheist but enjoy many hymns and related music. I obviously don’t relate from a religious point of view but do appreciate the music from a musical standpoint. Little Drummer Boy is also one of my personal favorites. PTX and David Bowie/Bing Crosby duet are my 2 favorite renditions of this song.

Great reaction. For me it is a Christmas Song. Request their “Seasons Of Love” seen on US nationwide tv on our 4th of July celebration.

Yes absolutely Little Drummer Boy is a classic Christmas song. However, I personally do not think Hallelujah is a Christmas song at all. Has nothing to do with Christmas, nor it's meaning. Just because it has the word hallelujah in it which just means "a shout of praise" for anything, doesn't make it Christmas.

Baby is Jesus. Mary is Jesus' mother. King is also Jesus. Bass is Avi and when needed Scott. This was made at Griffith Park in California. I noticed you replied that you don't see it as a Christmas song because you are Swedish. You might not be Catholic but the whole point of Jesus is that he died to save all of mankind. Not just Catholics or excluding any of mankind. That means every human regardless of religion or geography or gender or lifestyle.

Once again when they need power...Kirstin. Her voice is so bright is truly cuts through like a laser. They are so steadfast in their ability to be amazing and they have only gotten better and better through the years. Wall of beautiful sound. I have bought their cd's, even their brand new one. EP's is the way it's turning.
