My grandma will be so happy you welcomed her with open arms into the Sardonicast family. Thanks for a wonderful community that I can enjoy my love of film with. Cheers.
Your grandma is the MVP
Grandma goals!

RIP Ralph. It’s a shame that the Evil lurked him
He crash-ed
crash feels like if david cage was allowed to make an actual film instead of videogames pretending to be films
OH MY GOD you got him! That was brutal! (And so true)
“I’m likin’ this” is an Alex phrase I’ve picked up on over the years
1:26:20 The low-framerate slow motion is something they use in low-budget history documentaries where they can't choreograph a whole army. So they have like 4 guys in medieval garb waving swords at eachother and use that slow-mo effect to make things look 'chaotic'. That's the vibe I get from that kind of slow-mo.
Between the two films named Crash, one was made by a sick man that made an abhorent film that will lead us to the degradation of society. The other one was made by David Cronenberg.
I was deeply touched by Crash, similar to how Thandiwe Newton's character was touched by Matt Dillon's character in the traffic stop scene.
The stuff between Michael Pena and Shaun Toub I thought was good too imo
I'm from Argentina, and I loved Cuando Acecha la Maldad (When Evil Lurks).
Just to add a little of cultural context to some of the film, the nonsensical rules for dealing with the "rotten" are very reminiscent of the bad omens old farm people tend to believe in around here. None of the rules said in the film are actual beliefs as far as I know, but the feeling they give is very similar, including the taboos around technology and urbanization. But just to be clear, they still sound nonsensical, just in a very familiar way.
Thanks for this context. I saw the movie today, and was left wondering how much of it was based on actual beliefs in Argentina.
Alex mentioned how Crash is an example of how history is written by the victors, but is it necessarily a victor in the long run? Sure it won the Oscar at the time, but near as I can tell, its reputation as a film has basically been whittled down to "that movie that won Best Picture and shouldn't have." That win seems to have dominated the discourse surrounding the film to the point that my earliest memory of the Oscars is hearing the confusion surrounding the win, which I think is part of why Best Picture isn't an award I particularly care about.
It's why I wish people were less intense about the Oscars, an award show in which Citizen Kane lost Best Picture to How Green Was My Valley in '41.
looking at when evil lurks as a covid allegory will help digest character choices and "lore" confusion.
We had to watch Crash alongside Do The Right Thing in our “American racial tension” unit in my film class. We had to write an essay on which film did a better job at showcasing racial problems in our country. I was one of maybe 3 people that picked Do The Right Thing. 😑
The Ludacris joke would have worked perfectly in a Guy Ritchie movie
Yeah and I can’t believe that Roger Ebert actually put this at number freaking one! number one! on his best of the year list of 2005.
It’s up there with his review of Taste of Cherry
@@thecinematicmind yeah he was a great critic but it’s just mind-boggling that he gave movies like to kill a mockingbird, fight club, A few good men, and blade runner which is more understandable thumbs down, but he gave home alone three, speed 2 Cruise control, and cars 2 positive reviews.
@@pleaseenteraname1103 Ebert always skewed pretty high on movies that tackled race issues in America, even if they were done poorly.
Ebert is usually my fav critic but can’t stand how he restated the plot for a number of reviews without articulating why he did or didn’t like it. See his Constantine review.
Crash was my first introduction to Ludacris, Michael Pena, and Don Cheadle. Im not kidding. So I guess thats something I am grateful for.
*that's
@@debrachambers1304 👍
Probably for Ludacris for being his first origin as Tej and becoming in “Fast & Furious” films
Michael Peña instead of being a locks man and then joined Scott Lang’s team in MCU Ant-Man two movies.
Cheadle and Howard have been swapped differences of playing Brody as War Machine in MCU’s Iron Man.
Not to mention the Persian dude was also played as a scientist in Iron Man.
Is this their origins based on blockbuster franchises?
Crash was one of those perfect Oscar winners showing how LA loves and rewards movies about itself being‘important’.
I’m listening to this sardonically
This is my favorite AI speculation podcast
Back in college we got an assignment on a course similar to Film 101 in which we had to take a scene of any film and put all camera shots (close-ups, long shots, etc.) in chronological order. I decided for some reason to do the scene in Crash when (spoiler alert) Matt Dillon rescues Thandiwe Newton from the car before it blew up.
The first 10 minutes doing that were fun. The next couple of hours after that not so much. Still, I got an A!
Crash is the funniest, most embarrassing movie to win Best Picture. I love the black guy who plays a doctor on TV who gets his wife fingered when racist cops pull him over, leading him to take one of the carjackers hostage to prove he’s not too white. The fact this won because the Academy said “Eew!” and refused to watch Brokeback Mountain, to me, is one of those defining moments in Oscars history.
When evil lurks is such an unconventional horror film, but it was genuinely horrifying at times. Conceptually fantastic!
The key argument cracks me up. Keys can be copied, legally, very easily and cheaply, even using handtools if you are so inclined. If the locksmith was a criminal, they would keep or produce a copy of the key for any location they want to rob, like a rich persons house.
Adum ripping on the homeowners for not manually changing their own locks, which often involves modification of the door jamb, while also not understanding how easy it is to copy a key.
Illicit key copies are a red herring since anyone can quickly open any house door using a crowbar and some leverage. Door locks are there are there to deter nosey people and casual teft. At most they'll delay an intruter long enough for you enough time to escape/grab a weapon.
The Ludacris reveal is because Paul Haggis was carjacked, and he wasn’t ready to let that go yet…. Lol
I heard today that When Evil Lurks budget was around $500,000. I don’t have a source and might just be a rumor but it’s the first I’ve heard anyone mention the budget.
I get that part of the vibe Evil Lurks is going for is that you get drawn into the characters surprise and confusion, but it's not like this incomprehensible mess of a story that Adam almost seems to think it is. I feel I got a good grasp of what went on in my first viewing, even though we don't get all the pieces of the world building I feel I clearly get why things happened the way they did, what mistakes the characters made to cause them, and so on. The movie both showed and told what went on in the important events and scenes imo.
But also I'm not streaming and looking at a chat while watching it so there is that.
I've noticed the last few episodes weren't in the podcast playlist and therefore doesn't show up in RUclips Music Podcasts. I might literally be the only person this affects, but wanted to bring it up. I love listening to the show ^~^
i got so excited when i saw crash before i saw the year
Very surreal hearing the boys read your question haha. I agree with Adam’s analysis that Scavengers Reign was just poorly marketed (or not marketed at all), but it is amazingly written and animated and I hope they find time to watch it and maybe even talk about it on the podcast!
Sandra Bullocks story is the most Dhar Mann out of all them.
As undeserving as Crash was I would still say it's not my personal least favorite BP winner. That would go to "The Greatest Show on Earth" "Gigi" "Tom Jones" or "Cavalcade"
Great video bro
I wish they would discuss the wire, such an incredible series
I would love that too, but there’s no way in hell Adum could be convinced to watch it. He hates TV shows.
@@DeadCanuck yeah i know, especially one thats as long as the wire.
@@ddash96 I will recommend “Pod Yourself The Wire,” a half-comedy half-serious rewatch podcast that just entered Season 5 of the show. I love their observational humour and a lot of what they say gives me new perspectives on my fav show (for example, that Stringer is actually pretty fuckin’ stupid)
@@DeadCanuck thank you for the recommendation! Ill give them a listen
We had to watch “Crash” for my high school health class. 😂
Why health and not social studies. That's weird.
Too bad it wasn't the David Cronenberg one.
Oh wow I actually just watched the black Christmas movies lol. The 70s one is for sure a classic. You’re definitely gonna have fun ripping on the 2019 one though. 😂
Greetings from Argentina guys! 🤗
I remember watching it as a kid, the only part that I remembered was the "almost shooting the girl" scene because I was 9 and thought it was a cool fake out.
Now that I'm an adult whose seen plenty of movies, it's laughable and very stupid. Why didn't Pena call the cops on this crazy guy with a gun?
Also the van full of asian slaves was so stupid.
The Asian trafficking thing is what a white guy who knew nothing about human trafficking would think happens. It’s such a reductive way of viewing it.
Nice to hear you two enjoying a horror film. It’s a tough genre to create for.
Crash was Haggis trying to be Robert Altman in terms of multiplot.
Shudder does tend to make blu rays for their produced stuff, so I think there's a good chance we get a When Evil Lurks blu ray. If there is one I will also be buying it
Crash is the Green Book of Babels
glad they're gonna review the christmas movies after christmas
Crash is 2005's best after school special.
Christmas with Sardonicast!
the only thing I liked about crash is that they did indeed set up the blanks by having them in a big red box at the gun store. as blanks are sold in red boxes to warn you that the bullets inside will not actually kill someone.
FYI Roger Ebert threw out four star reviews like candy in his later years. Someone should edit audio of his infamously whiny review of Friday the 13th part IV over b roll of Crash.
I have seen Crash in two separate classes. Let that sink in.
They actually used to show drive in my school around 2006. I remember watching it then
Skinamarink was also a shudder production, if not just for distribution, and that got its physical release. I'm sure When Evil Lurks will get a bluray as well
When Evil Lurks was probably my favourite film of the year despite being pretty frustrated by Terrified.
I'm curious how people interpreted the axe scene. I thought she did it because she was so scared of the consequences of the goat being killed, but I've seen other people read it as her just being possessed instantly.
As for VFX, nothing stood out or took me out of the movie, even on a rewatch. And that was one of my main gripes with the second half of Terrified.
I do read it as her being terrified but also as her "doing what needs to be done" sort of thing. Specially with the implications of the threat being demonic in nature, I read that scene as her trying to save her and her husband's souls from what it's to come.
I also feel like the purpose of the scene is to contrast her actions with those of the rest of the characters, who constantly make things worse by not being able to make those horrible choices.
It's also a very clever play on our expectations as the audience, because while we initially see her behavior as unhinged, by the end of the movie, her actions seem a lot more reasonable in contrast to our more "mundane" protagonists who made everything worse.
Of all the things that could have looked janky, the thing that stood out most to me was the car journey with Ruiz.
When Evil Lurks viscerally disturbed me.
I still love Zombie movies and novels and I too love the most when they show the beginning of the outbreak, when normal people are suddenly confronted with the fall of civilization and with mayhem and have to use their brains and whatever tools and resources they can find to survive.
When Zombie stories are about a time months or years after the apocalypse, when all the characters have become grizzled, seasoned survivors and Zombie killers and the Zombies have become a part of the environment, like bad weather, I lose interest. I also find the whole "humans are the real monsters"-thing so many movies, books and series focus on boring.
If I want a story about human villains and warlords and slavers and cannibals, I don't need a Zombie story for that. That stuff I can have from other genres. I want the Zombies to be and remain the main threat and focus till the end.
Both movies called Crash are great for completely different reasons.
The daughter putting blanks in the gun could get her dad killed lmao makes absolutely no sense
49:01 also didn’t know that Paul Haggis wrote the script of both Daniel Craig 007 films like “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace”
Even Quantum is not as good so Haggis actually was involved making this race Oscar bait movie.
Day 66 of asking for an episode on the Evil Dead trilogy
I think Paul Haggis was a scientologist when he made crash. In my head, it's a scientology movie which somehow explains everything.
Terrified rules!!!!! Ya gotta watch it Adum!!!
40:22 she is referring to Harry Potter when he wears invisibility cloak? Wow that’s dumb right there.
I still can't believe Ralph was harassed out of this podcast.
1:38:20 The funny (not really) thing is that a lot of music supervisors on films are already sourcing samples and stems to AI
33:03 do Babel review later on. Because I love this movie more than Crash did. This movie is not about racism, well it does, but broken consequences for their actions.
55:35 I was thought you’re guys gonna do 1996 Crash movie by David Cronenberg so it’s a better Crash movie than 2004. It’s a movie about crashing two people like bonding for erotic sex.
We watched Crash for sociology class
I hope most of the comments are about how they shoud've watched the other Crash because they really should've just watched the other Crash.
MUCHAAAAACHOOOOS
I loved this episode, except for the part where you guys talked forever about A.I.. You’ve already talked about it at least a couple times before and the conversation feels so stale and repetitive to me now. That first question about how boredom impacts your ratings was way, way, more interesting for me to listen to. Please stop answering questions about A.I., but if you do it’s fine because it’s not my podcast at the end of the day and I can just skip through that part.
Adum mentioning horror reviewers that are butt hurt by violence in horror is the best, like yeah, have your boundaries but why make it your whole personality?
I thought you were gonna talk about the car sex movie
36:22 Alex Sandra Bullock’s character doesn’t have racism towards Asian, it’s she against the black thieves and other Mexican two people were just nothing much just making them mistakes and she complaint about the Mexican tattooing dude just changed the locks subplot.
A great gift for the holidays thrashing mediocre movies 😅
Trey Parker’s next movie is going to be a comedy about race relations in America, I think that might be the Crash or Green Book parody film we’ve all been waiting for.
44:30 whatever this Ludacris dude is more of being a pain in the ass thief than playing Dom’s buddies in “Fast & Furious” films. Stop complaining Luda, you’re more problematic than having you as a family tech dude in “F&F” films.
What happened to ralph?
a parody of crash about gays called "bang"
Cronenberg's Crash much better
I agree, I can watch a Spader banging or grabbing the Hunter’s gucci than Dillion grabbing the gucci of Newton.
43:22 well this movie is critically acclaimed by this race bait movie. That’s why people were either defending or facing against this movie.
37:11 I heard that became a Karen in this movie. Why yelling out loud when a person just fixed the locks and then she’s being a miserable pain in the ass Karen and that leads to another subject where she thinks that these thieves were stolen from the SVU?
"It's like is Session 9 was good"
Yikes
This is random but if you guys ever get to Alien: Resurrection please watch the directors cut. It looks nicer
Crash open class actions
Where has Ralph gone?
38:32 didn’t you guys missed the part when she fall down by a wet puddle and fallen down the stairs and she sounded like “AWHEH!!” Hilarious 😆
She might get her Oscar win than playing a Southern housewife in “The Blind Side” or having a district of lawyer played by Brendan Frasier in winning of being a LGBT obesity man in “The Whale.”
They don't have 4k
Crash (2004) was Dailywire’s Answer to Hollywood 19 years ago (Shit I realize it’ll be 20 by the time it ends)
17 SECONDS AGO YOU SAY?
The Crash TV show is even worse.
Ok, finishing the podcast, but I think I'm going to skip the AI conversation in the future. Adam position is just too cynic for me to enjoy. It's not that he is wrong, it's just I listen to this podcast to relax and everytime Adam talks about AI is the worst feeling. Still, keep the good work.
I think he is wrong. The idea that ia content generation isn't meaningfully different from creative expression is fucking insane to me.
AI editing opinion: AI in editing will mainly make life for assistant editors much simpler in their tasks. I can for sure see AI doing much of the lifting for people, and then it'll be a matter of editors/producers deciding on the varieties of cuts the AI presents to them. Like say for example the AI has done all of the organising of dailies, has cut together scenes using a variety of different takes it thinks you might like, then you review them and use voice to AI to replace clips with other clips etc. The fine cutting will most likely be done manually as that's where the magic happens, but for the rest of it like assembly and rough cutting, it doesn't take much creativity and it's mostly procedural.
Good good Movie. No Ralph😅
Sardonichristmas
1:03:56 I kind like Jennifer Esposito in this and she did okay, and she later on moved as voice as Tina Duck in “The Looney Tunes Show” and probably married Bradley Cooper after they divorced back then and she’s recently been to “The Master of Disguise” and the part that Dana Carvey just teased her that she had a nice tiny Italian butt.
Thandiwe Newton was being entitled as well and showing off of being used as sex object when the cop touched her gucci and same problem when Cruise almost monster crush in Mission Impossible II and then showing of her nice bush gucci in “Beloved” in 1998. Like damn, she’s way too sexualized in every Thandiwe’s nice skinny ass movies.
Where's Ralph Pepe?
WOAH
Crash does talks about racism during the 9/11 aftermath and people claim that this movie evolves against racism and dealing with problems to collide situations which they described this Oscar-bait movie.
I wanted to understand what they’re saying because it’s a controversial review that why planning to hate this movie and same goes to PrimeProjectors review which is compelling since Adam does in Watch-Along. Why blaming this Oscar winning movie?
Crash is fine as long as you don't pay attention to it. Great video
crash is a movie about racism written by someone who has never met humans
I really just want some of that apple ice cream eh
