All the Kingdom Death things looked really cool! Maybe you could make chiselling your pile of shame into a series or something? Just painting a couple random models every week/fortnight. Up to you whether that fits in with your style of content and content creation, but seems like a good way to get motivated if you ask me. Reminiscent of Dollightful’s “stock box” series lmao, though that’s on doll customisation so not quite the same.
This is a great idea. The dragon with the dwarves is a classic diorama called "Durin's Doom". Star Wars figures look like they're from the Micro Collection play sets. You could send away and get additional figures not included in the sets. Sets are now selling for hundreds of dollars. Your mom was smart to hold on to them. My mom used to throw my stuff away when she figured I had played with them enough.

Well Jon, looks like it's time to learn from Guy and get into speed painting. As a rule of thumb, you languish over every model, so it'd be a fun change of pace. You did your "4 easy steps box game" video a while back, why not put your money... Err, rather, put your paintbrush where your money is and paint up a whole boxed game that way? Also take what you learned from your recent dry-brushing and stippling video and put it to work. Give yourself a weekend to do the whole box (not including build time). Whatever box most strikes your fancy, maybe just based on whatever game you play the most of. As someone with a large backlog as well, would be good to see a speedpainting challenge where you tackle as much as you can over the course of a month or something, with only painting an hour a night for that project. Would be cool to see a video that is about tackling the mega big backlog, in a realistic fashion. Good luck with whatever you end up deciding!
Kingdom Death: Dragon King - that is such a sweet sculpt with so much character, yet lots of space for free-hand or other details you might want to add such as texturing - or anything really. Would be amazing to see what you could do with it!
Thank you! I was just getting stressed about my pile of shame and now I feel better. Would love to see you do the mausoleum and then get some great shots of all your zombies in there.
Jon, my vote is either for the KDM Dung Beetle Knight with his purty colored armor or maybe the Gorm. Otherwise I'm always down for squigs if you have some of those, and failing all that - the bottom shelf guys from your glass display were obviously fancy tickling to you at some point so shouldn't take a ton of motivation to continue on with. Thanks for the video and sharing your pile, thereby making me a bit less sensitive about my own!
I would love to see more of the boutique models be featured. I can see Games workshop stuff all the time but visually and for inspiration other makers would be excellent to highlight.
I think you should paint your graveyard scenery sets. You've got a love of Vampires and Witch Hunters, and they'll get use across many games or as photo props.✅ Great video as always. Nice to hang out and see what you got going on ✨
Painting that diorama your parents got you man. The fact your parents were supportive of your hobby is huge. I’ve been told by my family my entire life how dumb and a waste of time my miniatures are. I’m surprised I still even paint after all that because it actually makes you question why you would spend time with these models. Good on your parents.
I gain a particular joy from more ancient things being finished. Models that have waited and hoped for ages for the light of life to come to their eyes.
One of the coolest experiements I've seen was a photographer painting a negative paint job so that the film negative of the miniature comes out as intended.
Kingdom death stuff! Those models are all so cool and really hard to find, especially if you just want one or two because you don't want to buy the whole game.
At the moment I’m painting skeleton warriors figures I picked up from the dollar store at Halloween. I’m trying to learn the basics on them before I try on anything more pricy. I also only have a couple colours of paint so skelly boys seem like a good starting point. :)
Waste of money imo. Imagine being poor living paycheck to paycheck and then wasting money on things you won't use or paint ... this hobby is already crazy expensive
Buying them if you cant afford the basics in life is dumb, but if buying yourself a box of minis or a model kit once or twice a month to treat yourself its hardly the end of the world. I dont smoke, drink or gamble so a few quid on my miniature collection a month i feel is ok.
I'd love to see you come up with something interesting to do with Massive Darkness or Kingdom Death: Monster. I'm sure there's a video somewhere between those two.
Man I never thought you would have all the kingdom death stuff. I'm just missing the giga lion and am still sad I can't get it now. My favorite board game ever. Would love to see a video on it from you. I did mine like an old Gorgon's garden with everything encased in stone
I always struggle with object source lighting, particularly where there are multiple sources on the one model, and I've always thought the Kingdom Death models are particularly suited to that sort of thing so would love to see you paint something from that range. Looks like you have plenty to choose from :D
I just wanted to let you know that I actually just cleaned up my closet last week and got all of my minis into a pile of shame as well. It takes up the entire top shelf of my closet. I thought it was quite bad and ground myself from buying anymore minis for the rest of the year. Seeing your pile made feel like my isn't too bad and still a conquerable hill. Thanks!
Great vid as always! I've spent the last week in covid locked into my hobbyroom, so i decided to start on my small pile of shame so I painted some to tabletop just to get them out of here. Now I'm working on a Killaboss with Stab Grot, and after that I only have Zarbags Gitz and Thorins Company left, then I'm plastic free! :D
I'd love to see the Tarantulos Brood from the Red Harvest box painted up in a fun way. They look so cool, and there are a near endless amount of color schemes that would work well with them other than just the default GW version. Any real-world spider coloring/pattern would probably be neat to slap on them, or something totally fantastical and crazy. I'll almost certainly be getting a box of them once they make them available outside of the Red Harvest set, but I'd love to see what you can come up with for them.
Pack everything into moving boxes and seal them. After one year, auction off all mystery boxes that you haven't opened without looking into them. Brings down your pile of shame and you can make others really happy for 1. anticipation of the surprise when opening the box, and 2. having made a steal on some awesome minis to paint.
We’re gonna need a “suddenly burped” supercut at some point, man. This is the content people demand. As for painting content, the Kingdom Death anniversary models, some busts, or Big Daddy Be’lakor would be awesome.
I want to see more Kingdom death. It seems interesting , I love the monster designs and grim feel they have but the big anime booba kind of turned me away. Maybe paint up some monsters and tell us a bit about the game?
Jesus, John, that's insane! You and Scott need to hold a local event and get some kids introduced to all this cool stuff early. Get em started on painting, Give 'em a small figure, help them build and paint it and you've got hobbyists for life.
I love painting Massive Darkness minis! I don't feel so bad about what little pile of shame I have, now....the idea of bagging all my bases together is a stellar idea, I gotta say.
man, this pile makes me feel soooOoOooo much better. Thanks, John. I got about half your haul.. and I hear about it any time someone walks into my studio
I'd love to see that smaug mini painted. Love the history of it being a gift from your parents. As well as the hobbit has a personal feeling of it for me as well. My family always listened to the hobbit on audio during road trips, and I grew up with lotr so that model is very cool to me.
First, I just wanted to say a big thank you for being such an inspiration to "Slay the gray", and a second thank you for this inside look at your own piles o shame. it's good to know that your heroes are only human too and they have the same struggles as everyone else and they aren't just magical paint wizards that instantly paint everything.
Wow, I don't feel as bad about my pile anymore. But you and Scott really helped me tackle my pile last year and finally I've gotten started on painting everything. So at least there's that, thanks!
I think your videos where you crank out a huge pile of minis for one big project are your best. It's really inspiring to see someone with an approachable style finish a huge set of minis like you did with your AoS army. I think I'd really enjoy you doing all of the minis for one game like Warcry or Cursed City or Don't Look back. You could also break one game down into a series of videos ala Midwinter Minis and Blackstone Fortress.
Something I'd like to see both you and Scott do is perhaps once a month or something doing a 'backlog catchup' video. Put up a poll on youtube or your patreon of whatever people are interested in, let them vote for what, then have another poll for deciding a theme or something, and then you knuckle down and get that box done in that theme. Make a video on the project and publish. I'm sure everyone would enjoy it without there needing to be some new fancy technique or gadget. I'm sure sponsors would be on board too because whats not to love about being associated with the feel goods of making good progress.
Things you could do/ would be interesting to see: -A painting challenge video where you paint a model in a single color using shading techniques to give depth(similar to Picasso's blue period). -Take two kits from each spectrum of fantasy ie space age and medieval fantasy and kit bash them into a kill team. -Grab some stuff that you wouldn't mind parting with and have a patreon raffle.
I'm all caught up in my painting.................. Said nobody who is in this hobby ever. XD I have had a Hordes - Legion of Everblight Archangel not only built but also magnetized (wings) now in my cabinet sitting there primed since the week it was released....... Haven't played WM/H in over 6+ years.
Do a father daughter video where you two paint up those cutesie figures. Your daughter would love it, it’s bonding time, and it will help get the next generation of painters excited. I love getting my kids painting with me. If for the only reason that it makes my paint jobs look better 🤣
13:10 You have GOT to do those Spira Mirabilis busts Jon! Lucas Pinachet's sculpts are exceptional. I guess sculpting miniature busts isn't a major part of his income because he really does only release a limited number and then that's all folks. Gone forever. I bought one of his Goblin Mercenary busts; it's assembled and ready to start but I'm not going to go to work on it until I have learned the basics of painting with oils so I can achieve really nice flesh tones
Dude great video! Thank you so much for the helpful tips and honest canter. Would love to see some Kingdom Death painting videos and dioramas. Appreciate all you do bud.
I love watching the mini painter pile-o-shame videos, it's both inspiring and horrifying. I would love to see a large scale diorama of one of the undead dragons vs one of the regular ones, BUT you can still pull them off and use them in their game.
Another great video - it's reassuring to know that it's not just me that does this, thanks. If I have to choose then I'd like to see you paint your GW AoS models. However, I'd really like to see your plans for how you're then going to carefully store and/or present everything after assembling/painting because, similar to yourself, I'm finding ways to store the sealed boxes when I buy them but really don't know what I'm going to do with so many models once finished...!!
I personally haven't seen a lot of Kingdom Death models, but what I have seen, they're wonderfully sculpted and gnarly as hell. I'd love to see some of those in future videos!
Dude, I would love to follow you converting, painting and competing in a golden demon competition. Hear your thoughts around the process and then see how it goes in a competition. And if I could pick the category that would be 40k single miniature
As I've started to improve in my painting journey from watching your videos and others, I've noticed it also takes me longer and longer to paint each mini. It becomes harder to settle for a decent paint job when you know you are capable of something so much better. I would start by purging the things you know you will never play with. You will always buy other things to replace them. Then take some of the stuff you have been playing with that you've left gray and do something similar to your 120 zombies in a day video where you knock them out quickly. Those still looked great, and generally speaking you can strip the paint back off if you can ever justify it. Or try setting little challenges for yourself. This last weekend I challenged myself to try painting a model as fast as I reasonably could and I was surprised how good it turned out. Good luck working through it! Also you don't have to turn all of them into videos if that makes the project take significantly longer..
Honestly hearing some reviews of some of the different lines from assembly to painting would be nice. Stuff like conquest or kingdome death that most people haven't put together before let alone paint.
Man, that is a sexy pile of grey. So many great options for you to paint next on a video. The choice is obvious, really. I'd recommend printing out 8mm GW inspired minis for a rousing game of small scale 40k Apocalypse, or Epicalypse if you will. While you're at it, you should probably stock up on Adeptus Titanicus and Aeronautica Imperialis, for that will surely come in handy down the line.
Plot twist. Dude with "Slay The Gray" as his tagline has a GRAY DOG. .. and that dog is ef-star-cking adorable. I wanna get that face. I'm going to second the "Don't Look Back" minis, because they are so outside the usual style of awesome you've got going on.
Couldn't help but notice that blood bowl team sneak past, and I'd love to see your take on selecting team colors and a theme and making it happen in a few painting sessions.
Short term - would love to see a series' worth of Space Marine Heroes painted up as a squad. Long term - let's see you get into some of that Kingdom Death stuff, you're obviously passionate about it so that should motivate you to make progress!
Jon.. Those Kingdom death brown boxes seem to be one large mini or not a "assembly line army" box. Tackle those. You can turn each box into 3 videos for content. 1. Cleanup and aeembly 2. Basing and prep 3. Painting > Plus those boxes take up the most room-per-mini. And a lot of us didn't jump on those deal when they were out, nd we'd love to see those minis assembled and painted. Hell you can run it by the company that makes Kingdom death and get maybe some sponsors.
I want to see a plan to build and paint all of your KINGDOM DEATH models. Set a goal for this year to have it finished, recruit friends, do some 24 hour challenges do a 48 hour challenge, Using speed paints and airbrush techniques. What ever it takes to get them table ready.
Wow, what a haul! I'd love to see you build and paint the Warcry red harvest box. I've just had to give away my collection of real tarantulas due to moving so seeing what you can do with the tarantulos brood might make me want to do my own to bring back my collection for good in minature anthropod form
You should make a video series in which your subscribers vote for what you should pick out of your pile of shame and paint it. Or something like what you did with Brent, but instead of painting each other's most prized minis, paint each other's pile of shame. And if you don't have the space for them, I am absolutely convinced that people would be glad to purchase them off you.
Yeah, I hope you paint that pewter smaug! Also you have soooo many minis from kingdom death I want but I haven't been able to get. You have so much to paint! An unenviable position but enviable as well.
Assemble it all, take 1 color from your wall and feature that color on a single mini. Do that with every color you own. Do a series with your methods for those paint ups.
I'm working on Galen and Doralia ven denst at the moment and the torch on Galen is a challenge if you're new to painting... I have too many Grey too as well as a Be'Lakor I bought yesterday...
Id love a bigger project, challenge yourself, like a huge cemetary diorama with skeletons and zombies coming out of the ground, vampires summoning the dead and maybe nagash. Love your vids, keep em coming!
Thanks for making me feel less guilty about my own pile of shame in comparison.. Got a pile of around 1000 miniatures I guess amassed over the years. This video make me rediscover what I have. opening all boxes and laying them out. Forgot about a fair few of them, and forgot I had so many nice ones I still want to paint someday. Little pang of guilt, lot of yay, shopping in my own closet and finding treasures long forgotten, snuffing out a lot of my wanna buy more drive. And kickstarting my drive to paint more. My present day wallet thanks you eventhough my wallet from years past still groans ;)
I bought a full 2000 points death guard army off a marketplace and paintstripped and primed the bunch. Ive currently painted 10 poxwalkers and already bought the space marine part of the leviathan box off someone because it was a good deal. (Ive only recently started this hobby again after a hiatus of 15 years). Im already currently looking into 3d printing for more minis... Should be a great idea to decrease my pile of shame..

Would be cool to see a video that is about tackling the mega big backlog, in a realistic fashion. Good luck with whatever you end up deciding!
It'd be good to see you do it too :)
Kingdom Death: Dragon King - that is such a sweet sculpt with so much character, yet lots of space for free-hand or other details you might want to add such as texturing - or anything really. Would be amazing to see what you could do with it!
This 100%
This!
Seconded! The dragon king is a fantastic model!
Yes!
Hopping aboard the dragon king train, such a phenomenal model and I swear painters pull out all the stops every time on it.
I Love big batch building/ painting vids. Painting marathons. "Speed" painting videos. Painting an army on a deadline etc. You rock!
You've got a love of Vampires and Witch Hunters, and they'll get use across many games or as photo props.✅
Great video as always.
Woah a negative of a negative becomes the "original"?
@@kingremus7544 yup
Kingdom death stuff! Those models are all so cool and really hard to find, especially if you just want one or two because you don't want to buy the whole game.
Unpainted miniature hoarding is a key part of the hobby, we can ALL relate 🤣
Minis are supposed to wait until their time would come. Just like a good wine. And unlike a wine their time could never come. ;)
I think you should conquer your fear and start the busts cause it'll be some amazing content and good for you as a painter.
setting up an elaborate diorama with water effects of a battle between two factions would be pretty sweet. Warcry?
Just realized I'm logged into my girlfriends account..
I'd love to see your takes on Cursed City or any of the Soulblight Gravelord vampires
I'd love to see the Lord of the Rings scene painted.
Considering the integrated gemstones I'm not sure it's meant to be painted.
@@Lodorn masking fluid, ftw!
That is actually just the special edition heroes. The normal game has normal boobs and they are covered in rags.
My daughter and I paint together. Shes 5 and absolutely loves it! Would love to see you and your daughter paint some minis as well!
Holy crap, I laughed so hard at this vid. Comedic timing and editing is on point! So good!
I'd love to see that smaug mini painted. Love the history of it being a gift from your parents. As well as the hobbit has a personal feeling of it for me as well. My family always listened to the hobbit on audio during road trips, and I grew up with lotr so that model is very cool to me.
Everyone's commenting on all the things they'd love to see you paint. I'd love to see the dimensions on that tiny cabinet you pulled 40 boxes out of!
Simply do the ones that inspire you and you actually enjoy to do. That’s the ones that the most fun to watch.
You could also break one game down into a series of videos ala Midwinter Minis and Blackstone Fortress.
that hordes model from privateer press is an AMAZING mini. I'd love to see you paint that Trolblood model!
Things you could do/ would be interesting to see:
-A painting challenge video where you paint a model in a single color using shading techniques to give depth(similar to Picasso's blue period).
-Take two kits from each spectrum of fantasy ie space age and medieval fantasy and kit bash them into a kill team.
-Grab some stuff that you wouldn't mind parting with and have a patreon raffle.
Best confirmation gift ever.
Also you are gonna do what you want, but, we need more doggo cameos
I'm all caught up in my painting.................. Said nobody who is in this hobby ever. XD
I have had a Hordes - Legion of Everblight Archangel not only built but also magnetized (wings) now in my cabinet sitting there primed since the week it was released.......
I'd be SO excited to see any of that Kingdom Death stuff get built and painted!
Dude great video! Thank you so much for the helpful tips and honest canter. Would love to see some Kingdom Death painting videos and dioramas. Appreciate all you do bud.
And I thought my pile of shame was bad. Thanks for making me feel less bad about mine whilst I harshly judge and/or feel green with envy of yours!
Ninjon:Which ones to paints?
Everyone: Everything!
Yeah, so basically plenty of videos to come!
There will be no shortage!
I would love to see some terrain speed painting with the more complex buildings like the cemetery stuff
Yes! And then add the vampire Underworlds warband into it for diorama!
Id love to see you paint those one-off busts! They deserve to be painted!
Dude, 100% voting for this kingdom death stuff. It's really unique to me. never seen these, had to look them up. Wow.
I'd love to see these painted.
I think highlighting models from these sources that would be good for encounters in dnd or roleplaying games would be a neat video series.
Short term - would love to see a series' worth of Space Marine Heroes painted up as a squad. Long term - let's see you get into some of that Kingdom Death stuff, you're obviously passionate about it so that should motivate you to make progress!
Dat cheeky camera work to hide the KDM model boobas.
Definitely dive into that KDM dude. People never get to see those painted up.
Jon.. Those Kingdom death brown boxes seem to be one large mini or not a "assembly line army" box. Tackle those. You can turn each box into 3 videos for content.
1. Cleanup and aeembly 2. Basing and prep 3. Painting >
Plus those boxes take up the most room-per-mini.
And a lot of us didn't jump on those deal when they were out, nd we'd love to see those minis assembled and painted.
Hell you can run it by the company that makes Kingdom death and get maybe some sponsors.
Thank you, thank you , thank you!!! You have made my day! I am not alone in my purchasing habits!! 😂😂Nagash please Jon.👍😉
I want to see a plan to build and paint all of your KINGDOM DEATH models. Set a goal for this year to have it finished, recruit friends, do some 24 hour challenges do a 48 hour challenge, Using speed paints and airbrush techniques. What ever it takes to get them table ready.
This gives me a warm feeling inside knowing that my pile of shame is basically nothing compared to this
It's only a small one, but using the crimson court to make some drukhari character conversions would be awesome
Always fun and entertaining. Thank you John.
Kingdom death models are so awesome to see painted!!!
Always love to see u paint those!!!
Don't look back looks super rad! Would be keen to see some of its minis!
It would be awesome to see you paint some of those limited edition prize possessions of yours I feel your skill is well more than enough to paint them phenomenally
