  • Card effects in Yu-Gi-Oh have a lot of reputation, both good and bad in the Card Game and Yu-Gi-Oh TCG/OCG community. Today, we take a look at some of the weirder card effects, many of which are still the most updated versions as per Konami's official simulator Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel. Why are they like this? What do they mean? And has Problem Solving Card Text ruined the future for their cards?

      I remember a friend did something similar with the card Dragon's Bead. It negates an effect that would target a dragon, but he interpreted that to mean any action (that has an effect, as in it effects the game state) that would target (as in put his dragons in any danger whatsoever) could be negated.
      ''I summon BUSTER BLADER''
      (it could destroy his dragons)
      ''Draaaagon's Beeead'
      ''ok... then I activate monster reborn''
      (it could summon a monster that could destroy his dragons)
      ''Draaaagon's Beeead''
      Next Turn
      ''I activate dust tornado!''
      (his dragons might need that spell or trap card)
      ''Draaaagon's Beeead''
      Next Turn
      ''I draw''
      (you could draw something that could negatively affect his dragons) ''Draaaagon's Beeead''

    What makes me angry the most, is that the ocg text for penguin knight actually makes sense:
    "When this card is sent from the Deck to the GY by an opponent's card effect, return all cards in your gy to the deck and shuffle"
    They just fucked up in translating it...

    • @Zetact_
      @Zetact_ 10 месяцев назад +16

      Upper Deck's localization just kinda ignored the OCG's language being precise from the very beginning and wrote their cards more like MtG cards. Most of the goofy text in the early game is the result of that, and PSCT is really just Konami saying, "We're going to be following the OCG's grammar from now on [except for numbering our effects.]"

    • @homerman76
      @homerman76 10 месяцев назад +8

      @@Zetact_It's actually quite ironic how some of the most confusing card text was caused by MtG's influence, given that that same influence also led Konami to simplify card text with key terms like piercing damage over "this card deals the difference between attack and defense..."

      You could conceivably argue that if the secondary Links were pointing to backrow, that those would be destroyed too, since it only specifies the first set and second set of destroyed cards have to be monsters, but then says "everything they point to" for the third set of destructions.
      Also it conceivably ends at that third set, since you could argue that you'd repeat the _whole_ process from the start instead of continuing along link arrows for further sets, but since you already destroyed anything pointing directly to Voltester, it would end the effect.

    I recently had my Snoww moment because of playing Purrely in Master Duel, because her and another Dark World monster are possible discard fodder techs for the Purrely Memories.
    The part in the middle is an additional effect added onto the base effect under the right conditions.
    So the base effect is that if it's discarded to the GY by a card effect, you add a "Dark World" card from your deck to your hand. That's it. The special summon doesn't happen, because "that target" refers to a card that's only selected if the additional condition is met.
    If the card was not only discarded, but specifically *from your hand to the GY by an opponent's card effect,* then FIRST, you target a monster in their GY. Then you carry out the base effect, searching a "Dark World" from your deck. THEN you special summon the card in your opponent's GY that you targeted, to your field in defense position.
    They wrote it as weirdly as they did because the targeting has to happen first. So they apparently couldn't just write out the base effect and THEN add the extra conditional effect all after that.

    The best way Snoww has ever been described to me is that it's written in a coding language sort of style. That's the basis behind the weird wording, and computer science majors I've shown the card to point this out and can read it's effect perfectly, but they're still confused on why it was worded that way in the first place.
    The only logical reason I can imagine Snoww (and other Dark Worlds with this sort of weird starting line) starts off this goofy with an effect nested within another effect is because if it wasn't, or if it was worded slightly differently, not only could it chain to itself but be used to chain block. Imagine layering your Snoww effects so your opponent can't Ash it just by making the revive effect CL2.
    Therefore, the only people who would be able to get Snoww's effect on first read are CompSci Yugioh pros, also known as trans women I guess. Hope this helps a bit 🥴

    I'm glad someone else noticed the missing Bible length explanation missing on Rivalry of the Warlords.
    I also hate how Problem Solving Card Text and new errata's make understanding certain things harder. "Must be Fusion Summoned and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways." and "Must first be Fusion Summoned." are clearly defined with their differences. "Must be Fusion Summoned." doesn't explain anything. Yes card, the Fusion Monster must be Fusion Summoned. Good job!
    Also I don't like how they changed the wording on Cyber Dragon cards to be easy to misread. "If your opponent controls a Monster and you control no Monsters-" is unmistakable while "If only your opponent controls a Monster-" is easy to overlook the word only.

      "Must be Fusion Summoned" exists because there are cards to Special Summon Fusion Monsters out of the Extra Deck without Fusion Summoning them, like Metamorphosis. (It's banned, but other examples exist like Cattle Call or Shadow's Light.) As a result, if it "Must be Fusion Summoned", then the "cannot be Special Summoned by other ways" is implied. If it "Must first be Fusion Summoned", it can be Special Summoned back from the GY/banished if it was Fusion Summoned first, but cannot be Special Summoned by Metamorphosis. If it says neither, it can be Special Summoned by Metamorphosis (but if it's summoned in this way and not Fusion Summoned, it can't be Special Summoned back from the GY/banished because Yu-Gi-Oh is still a pile of confusing rules sometimes).

    To be honest, as a Dark World Player from heart, Snoww is written fairly technical and with logic behind it.. it just reads weird. The Semicolon indicates a cost, that has to be paid then your opponent can react (for anyone who is new to yugioh). Since a cost always comes first, the first thing to happen in Snowws effect, if it was discarded by a card or effect from your opponent, is to target a card in your opponents Graveyard. Then you can search a Dark World card (if snoww was discarded in general), then you can special summon targetted monster.

    The reminder text on Kotodama is actually relevant, because without it, simply any time there are multiple face up monsters on the field with the same time, they would all be destroyed. BUT, with the extra text, 3 different things happen:
    - when Kotodama enters, all face up monsters with the same name are destroyed.
    - when kotodama is on the field, if a new duplicate monster is summoned, ONLY the new one is destroyed
    - if multiple were to be summoned or flipped, ALL of them are destroyed
    Hence, the original/non-reminder text would actually not be an accurate description of her ability.

    4:54 it seems pretty straightforward, right? It says if your opponent has a card with an effect that makes you discard Snoww to the GY, and they make you do this with that card effect, Snoww’s effect activates; the effect being, you can target a monster in the opponent’s GY, search a card from your deck, and special-summon the targeted card to your field in defense position.
    Edit; oh damn, I didn’t even see the split meaning. Lemme try and rephrase the effect.
    “If this card is discarded to the GY by card effect, add 1 Dark World card from your deck to your hand. If this card is discarded to the GY by an OPPONENT’s card effect, you can do the above, and target one monster in your opponent’s GY to special summon in Defense position.” The “IF ANY” in the original statement is more important than it appears-I thought it was like in case there was no such monster in the GY, or something.

    Snowww is simple
    1. If discarded by a card effect add 1 dark World card from your deck for your hand
    2. If discarded by an opponents card effect gain both the first effect and the added effect to special summon one monster from your opponents grave to your side of the field

    Snoww would be much more understandable like this:
    If this card is discarded to the GY by card effect: You can target 1 monster in your opponent's GY (but only if this card was discarded by an opponent's card effect); ...

    • @megamachopop
      @megamachopop 10 месяцев назад

      My current "fix" for its text would be as such:
      If this card is discarded to the GY by card effect: Activate this effect, also if it was discarded from your hand to the GY due to an opponent's card effect, you can target 1 monster in your opponent's GY: Add 1 "Dark World" card from your Deck to your hand, then Special Summon that target (if any) in Defense Position.

    Inspector Boarder is the worst, obviously because of its effect but also because it just blatantly ignores Normal and Effect monster card types in its so called "reminder text", which makes it way more oppressive than it would be if its own existence allowed one effect to go off.

    I had a copy of Kotodama from almost 2 decades ago, and never gave it a thought (Most likely cause I didn't read the effects and focused on artwork or stats). But now I'm thinking about using it against Cyber Dragons, by summoning a Token to their field, then Special summoning the original from my hand on turn 1, so my opponent can't play any of their Cyber Dragons, since so many of it's other versions count as it while on the field. (Yeah it may be RNG focused and Clunky or Slow, but it's using the card creatively at least XD)

    So, it's very wonky, but the commas are used to connect the effects,
    So, with Snoww, the text about being discarded is ended with a comma, and then the part you apply in addition to the main effect if it was the opponent's effect, starts with a comma.
    So, kind of think of it like the commas are boarders, and the text in between the commas is the main effect that's applied regardless of who discarded it, while the text outside the commas(minus the condition text) is for when your opponent discarded it.
    Example: [Condition text here]
    *If your opponent discarded this card, target a Monster in your Opponent's Graveyard*
    [If this card is discarded, add a Dark World Monster from your deck to your hand]
    *Special Summon the card you targeted*

    I think another good example would be cyber eternal, the ruling on it is super confusing as it doesnt say what the conditions are for special summoning the cyber fusion monster ignoring it summoning condition and makes it out like you choose either of the two effects (special summoning your cyber fusion monster ignoring summoning conditions or returning it to the extra deck) a choice you can make regardless of if said monster was previously on the field or sent to the graveyard directly from the extra deck.

      it matters in the case of Overdragon (since that one can only be Fusion summoned), i.e. it's to trump card mechanics in the one (and future proofed for more) that end up saying they can only be Fusion summoned

      Yeah I got the Cyberdark End Dragon structure deck for my nephew when it first came out, and he figured that he could use Cybernetic Horizon to sent Cyberdark End Dragon to the GY and then summon it with Cyber Eternal. Just from reading Eternal by itself, both my nephew and I understood that he could do that combo. Then he got super upset whenever he tried it on Master Duel and we found out that that's not how Eternal works 💀💀💀💀💀

    • @ANDELE3025
      @ANDELE3025 10 месяцев назад

      The ironic part is, the "must be first summoned correctly" ruling doesnt exist within the rules themselves, its entirely self gaslighting by the playerbase as the rules explicitly state "if a card effect conflicts with rules (that arent how effect speed and board state work), the effect trumps rule", thus CE by rules as written would summon any of the cyber fusions.

Does it even go to the gy? bcuz it never got activated. Is fuse line just a column specific MST with infinite ammo that never activates the card or its effect?
    I need some1 more knowledgeable to explain fuse line to me. It just sounds like an alternative to MST.

    • @XJHenryX
      @XJHenryX 11 месяцев назад +1

      "While this card is set," is an activation condition to make the card work- it's just the only state in which the card can be used and flipped up for its effect. (Which makes sense, since it's a column gimmick.)
      This just means that if you tried to use it from hand (with something like Makyura) or from grave (with something like Transaction Rollback) you wouldn't be able to, as it would not meet this condition and as a result, could not be activated. You can only attempt to activate it while it is set.

    • @baileydombroskie3046
      @baileydombroskie3046 11 месяцев назад

      @@XJHenryX Wundt it make more sense for it to say “this card must be set to activate this effect.”? And ok so wat ur saying is fuse line is just a typical normal trap with the condition that it has to be set to even use its effect so it can’t be cheated out, it still has the usual trap problems and benefits too.

    • @XJHenryX
      @XJHenryX 11 месяцев назад

      @@baileydombroskie3046 It definitely would be clearer, yeah, but it's one of the older cards with a column gimmick (2017, which is before things like Mekk-Knights and Imperm) so the wording probably wasn't yet refined.
      It's pretty bad since it is just a regular trap, and was only ever printed as a secret so it's not like it's a cheap bulk option lol- it does work with Labrynth though which is very funny, so it does have that going for it.

      Because people would use some card like Exchange to get one of their opponent's cards into their hand, then use monster recovery and shuffle it into their deck and maybe "forget" to return it later

    • @randomprotag9329
      @randomprotag9329 11 месяцев назад

      it makes total sense to stop it being forgot or "forgot" but theres a simple work around have a universial rule that cards in hand get shuffled into the owners deck and effects only care if the card got shuffed into a deck from your hand and not which deck it went into.
