- Filmed on 19 March 2023, the first day after Sumomo's reunion with the Haoko family, at Ueno Zoo (Tokyo).
Baby gorilla SUMOMO was born on 31 May 2022.
She was nursed by the zoo staff bacuse her mother MOMOKO's health condion was not good enough to raise her baby.
Through the 9 month-long artificial care, she finally reunioned with her family.
KOMOMO, a sister of Sumomo and a daughter of MOMOKO, was taking care of her little sister on this day.
I love Komomo's eye and expressions when she cared for and gazed at Sumomo lovingly.

@@sonjavandam1306 Yes of course she is a Foster Mom, but if Komomo has taken over the duties of motherhood then she becomes mommy to Sumomo. There are plenty of cases in the ape world where another females takes the offspring of another mother (when they are unable or unwilling to care for them, or die). These females effectively become the mothers to these infants.

@@sonjavandam1306 True, it is early days, but the only footage that I saw with Momoko and Sumomo together looked very awkward and not at all relaxed or motherlike. We will see what transpires.

It's time mama had a break & to be honest Komomo deserves to know what it's like to be a Moma, it might be the only chance she gets. Either way Sumomo is in good hands. She has become Sumomo's mother now as Momoko does not seem to be very interested in the little girl. Komomo is a doing a great job and is the mother figure now.

What a lovely family, and watching this precious baby in the loving arms of her sister is amazing. This baby is another little miracle . The way these beautiful animals are being killed , and natural habitats being destroyed there will be no Gorilla’s left in the wild. Every birth is a blessing . Even though these animals are in places where there not free , at least they are Safe , Loved and taken care of very well. This baby is so calm and looks very content in her sisters arms. Little Kentaro was a little live wire when he was around that age not to mention his big brother always trying and wanting to play. But this is the first time I’ve watched this family of Gorillas and I will be watching them every time you make a new video. Thank you for sharing these . Who else cant watch genki gorilla family videos aka kintaros their living condition IS HORRIBLE I WISH THEY HAD A PLACE LIKE THIS AND OTHER ZOOS .
I can't watch them anymore, I check on kintaro from time to time, but it's a disgusting place & inside is worse, 💩 everywhere. I'm glad they don't know any better.😩
Komomo is gonna be a good mother someday. If one day they send her to a new troop I hope they send her to a good troop with a good silverback. I don't want Komomo to have the same fate like Bikira 🥺💔
My heart was broken with Bikira. She deserved soooo much better then that horrible troop and zoo she was sent to. She was afraid to even pick up her own child because those females bullied her so badly but thankfully he lives on and is growing up. I would absolutely hate it if the same thing happened to another female gorilla.
Komomo is such an amazing sister caring for Sumomo the way she has been. All of the siblings are so eager to hold baby Sumomo and love her but she seems the most at peace with Komomo. The way Komomo holds her and looks at her with such love already is beautiful. So glad she was so accepted by her beautiful troop.

This isn't unusual in the Great Apes. When mothers abandon or can't care for their young, usually either an older sibling, sister or other female in the group will act as a surrogate/adoptive mother. I just hope Kokomo allows Sumomo to start crawling so that she gets some exercise rather than just holding her all the time. She may already do this, but I haven't seen it yet in any uploaded videos unless I've just missed it. Sumomo is such a pretty baby girl! Komomo sort of reminds me of Tayari in the face... I think it's the eyes and mouth. I'll have to research to see if they are related in any way.

The zoo staff will be feeding the baby. After taking all this time to raise her I think that you can be pretty sure that they would not have risked putting Sumomo back in with the family unless they were certain the family would bring her to the keepers to be bottle fed when asked.
This would be part of the gorilla's training, just like they know how to present themselves for medical examinations etc. This is what happened when Genki was unable to feed Kintaro enough milk to sustain him. Instead of removing him they taught Genki to bring Kintaro to them for supplementary milk.

Libia Lostalo-Sumomo's mama is right there in the family.....Momoko.They allowed the family to choose who would step up and take care of Sumomo.Komomo is very maternal and she is doing it. Momoko had anemia and was treated and is healthy now.Happy gorilla watching to you always!💙🦍💜🦍😉😁

I guess the mom doesn't want the roll of being a mama so they give her to komomo instead of letting komomo start her own family...gentaro and komomo are related...I think she would be good for frank or Monroe in the US ❤❤

I think there's no information yet. I have not seen any video of Momoko with all the group.
I believe that Momoko is allowing Komomo to raise this baby. It may be due to her age and recent illness. It is probably better for everyone in this troop for Komomo to be mother to little Sumomo. Komomo does not seem to be grabbing her ear much now. This baby is good for Komomo's mental health and is advantageous to all the troop to be Sumomo's mother now.

@@raquel_cb_ Komomo brought Sumomo to the glass in pride to show everyone her little bundle. Komomo looks very happy in the footage as though she were smiling and content. She will learn to not hold on to Summomo in time to let her crawl and climb. But for now Sumomo is well protected and loved.

The people that have an obsession for Momotoro ‘s family and just think about Kintaro Kintaro are already proclaimed that Sumomo looking like Kintaro. What a bull statement as Sumomo look like Haoko family and like him she looks to be tall and a big baby, kintaro is going to be small like Genki. Yes I've noticed that too she looks nothing like Kintaro, he takes after his mother. As far as I can remember she looks more like baby Momoka who is the image of her dad.

How do the keepers take baby away from troop to be bottle fed?
Sumomo will come to the cage when she sees that the keepers have a bottle for her. She knows that the bottle is for her.

@@SSS-cj7hz As in most zoos the keepers have ways of separating gorillas. The gorillas are also trained to perform certain tasks for food rewards. They can handle this, with little problem and are very good at their jobs..

I'm sorry, but I don't know the story. Where is the baby's mum? Who feeds the baby? I'm confused!
Sumomo's mother, Momoko, became very ill after delivering the baby. The mom was severely anemic. They separated the baby as Momoko wasn't able to care for her and needed treatment of her own. During the time they were separated Momoko received medical treatment and the staff started raising Sumomo, bottle feeding her, but the troop could always see her and she could see them. When reunited with her daughter Momoko seemed a bit uncertain with her, but Sumomo's sister Komomo has stepped up and become a surrogate mother. I think Momoko is happy to let her do it, this is her fifth baby! Zoo staff will continue to provide milk bottles for Sumomo until the appropriate weaning time. The family is now all together once again, and they all seem very happy about that.

It's incredible that the Japanese discovered what Lowland Gorillas prefer in their confined living environments. Green plants, vines, trees, shrubs, bamboo are out - Cement and Stone are in. It's far more healthful walking on and sleeping on cement. Oh and hay, just in case they want to pretend to be a horse. Throw in a used Car tire and expect them to be forever grateful.
