This is the BEST trotline video I've seen. I was able to set up a 10 leader trotline in 10 minutes. The knot had me concerned, but its magic!! Thx for the video.
nice and fast. i was taught last year by a old timer who runs the market here and they been doing it for generations. i use swivels tie two knots in line either side of it. 100 line hooks and also use 12 floats per line. its slower then this for sure. to make the line especially doing 10 at once... my drops or staging i just use mono. i also use bonded twine for the line. i ran a little last year but i think im gonna try full time this year. trying get boxes ready and boat set up so i can do it by myself. though i just got a low rider john boat for now. if it goes good maybe i can get a better boat for it in the future. i like cast netting shad so i dont have to cut bait to rig 500 hooks at a time.
Now that is the way you do it. My daddy and brother did it like that and that is how they taught me. No swivels at all . We would always use old railroad spikes for weight. Now we use old plow points. Good job thanks for setting the record straight.
This is how my grandfather taught me. Everyone I've seen on YT uses hardware instead of tying a knot. Every swivel or clip is a potential failure point, costs money, and contributes to a mess. We didn't have 5gal pvc buckets back then, pails were steel. We made wooden boxes to lay these in, with slots cut in the edge of the board to keep hooks separate, and coiled the entire line into the box, setting the hooks into the slots. I suppose a bucket might work too and is easier than building the box. Too many people are relying on technology and gear and not enough on fundamental skills like knot tying.
Just did 200 burpees. Now I'm making trotlines. 😂 country boy can survive. Me and my dad used to make them this way. I forgot some of the basics. Came back easily. Thank you.
I watched from start to finish an you sir have it down pat, I run my lines exactly the same way, all those saying that he’s wrong an they will be a tangled mess have no clue as how to keep your lines. It’s good to see actual hands making real line vids, fish on Mr, fish on. I’m also currently in law enforcement.
Great idea! Can you also show how you keep your trotline properly organized? And how do you tie your hook? Do you remove the hook after each use ? Thanks
Nice video! I haven't fished a trotline in over 40 years. For a while, Florida outlawed trotlines. We can use bream (sunfish) on a rod but it is still illegal on a bushhook or trotline. In fact, we can't have any live fish as bait on a bushhook or trolling. Jugs are illegal as are yo-yos. All lines must be marked with you name and address. And, you are only allowed 25 hooks. It is such a pain. To add to that, the fish are changing their behavior patterns.
When I was a kid my dad used to take me limb lining for turtles... he taught me that it was called staging too... I immediately knew you knew what you was talking about when you said it... also... most local hardware stores have no idea what your talking about when you ask what isle their staging is in....
Lonnie, Iowa law states "You cannot use more than five trotlines with a valid sport fishing license. These trotlines cannot have more than 15 hooks total. Each separate line must have a tag attached, plainly labeled with the owner’s name and address." That means to my understanding you can only have 5 lines and the total between those lines should not be more that 15 aggregate. However, fantastic video!
They definitely go through too much trouble and spend extra money on swivels and beads my dad used to tie the drop lines a way where they wouldn't slip
Gregory Fortenberry your full of shit, I’ve ran lines the exact same way for many years an never have issues with tangled lines unless your an idiot an drop em in the bucket lol !!! Nice try mr but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with his set up
Okay good info. However, you mentioned hooks then did not go into any other detail. You did not even show how to attach a hook to the line. Soooo 20 minutes (should be 4), no hooks and no tits (clickbait).

Thanks good fishing

What pound string do you use on the mainline and staging
I try to stay like 120 main I use 60 for the drop line
Do you have swivels on your hooks?
Some times
Watched this video yesterday with zero experience. 24 hours later I caught my first fish. Thanks for the knowledge.
Great
Is your drop line the same size as the mail line
Hi Most of the time 1 or 2 size smaller then the main line
It does look pretty simple
Excellent video thank you kindly
How much weight can your staging knots handle?
The string will fail before the not

That’s a half hitch ain’t it
It might be
Young fellar, you make that look hard.
Please open Ashley's book and look how to use Miller's knots for this. It'll cut your work time in half.
Would never make a trotline like that.
Hay man if you give me a shout-out out I'll shout you out
