We can agree that MiHoYo have improved their work around where Honkai Impact 3 released, and ever since Genshin Impact was a thing and then it was released, this was it, they become so well known by the gaming community.
Hi Bran, I'm a Genshin player from China who's been following you for a long time, I don't know if you'll see this comment but I'd like to say something anyway, of course it's only my personal opinion, so I apologise in advance if it's controversial🥺. I'm glad you watched this video about the development of mihoyo, a Chinese gaming company. I was playing Genshin because of the music, and what attracted me to the game at the time was that I heard traditional Chinese folk music tunes in this game, which is very rare because actually the term ACG mostly refers to Japanese anime and games. At a time when Japanese anime culture was spreading all over the world, Genshin used the anime style in the "Liyue" area to promote and spread some traditional Chinese culture and music to the world, which I think is not easy. I didn't know much about Japanese anime, and I didn't know about The Legend of Zelda at the time, but I just thought that mihoyo's use of anime, which is the mainstay of Japanese culture, to spread our culture was something I was very proud of. So at the time, even after I saw the comments that said Genshin copied the Legend of Zelda, it didn't affect my mood to keep playing.
This feeling peaked when I came to the UK to study, and was still very homesick in my first year in the UK, when Genshin released "Lantern Rite" and "The Divine Damsel of Devastation", it was the first time I had ever spent Chinese New Year in a foreign country, so I was very, very impressed that mihoyo could do that. And of course it was even stronger when I saw that you foreign players were also touched by these traditional Chinese stories. So I'm really thankful that mihoyo can bring this kind of game to the world, and I'm really thankful for all the support from foreign players like you. Sorry this review is a bit too long, I hope you will continue to enjoy Genshin, including Star Rail!🫡

I think most people who see the history of hoyoverse games know that genshin exists because of honkai impact 3rd, but i want to elaborate a bit more on that.
Honkai 3rd was originally an action game played in stages, the story would have open areas that you could fight in, but they were small and not very complex, however sometime in 2017 they added the Sakura samsara open world to honkai 3rd (featuring yae sakura), which was an open world map different to the rest of the game since it had a fully explotable area for players to experience, this single feature is why genshin exists, it's because players responded really well to sakura samsara and the devs liked it too, so from that feedback they started to develop a game focused entirely on open world exploration.
Yeah I think that was mentioned in a magazine article if i recall correctly? I remember reading about that before (the part about the Sakura Samsara map giving them the idea to make Genshin)
I think it's really cute how much hoyoverse loves kiana, she's basically been their mascot since the start of their career making games, they love her so much that they add her to ALL of her games as a protagonist or a really important character to the plot, hence why she's one of the first characters you see in genshin as the unknown god! i'm really confident that the unknown god is meant to be genshin's version of kiana kaslana (i mean they have the same VAs lol) and i'm so hyped for when we get to meet her again.
Where is Kiana in hsr? And I haven't seen Kiana in zzz or Tears of Themis either, apparently now they don't like Kiana that much, or they just don't add her to all the games anymore. In fact, they have added Kiana so far only to genshin.

But in genshin, they literally don't know each other and not connected to each other. Or do you think that if there is a Raiden, then there should be a Kiana? There is no need for this, and this is not the rule.
And who said that Raiden will appear in hsr? Like it's clear that most likely she will appear, but this is not confirmed information by anyone, and she may also not appear.
Personally the unknown god is not kiana but more of a sirin kiana aka herrscher of the void kiana which isnt kiana but is sirin in kiana

She behaved too calmly for Sirin, she even respectfully answered the travelers' question and fully introduced herself, although she said that the arbitrariness of humanity had come to an end, but at that time she most likely believed that sibling came from Khaenri'ah, so it was rather said to a godless nation that let the monsters from the abyss into the world.
I bet it's Kiana, not Sirin, although nothing prevents her from being Sirin.
It was so funny at "the end of the world". By the way, I live in a completely different country and not even an English-speaking one, and everything was EXACTLY the same at our school. We went on a school field trip on the bus that day and counted the minutes until the end of the world, and then shouted that the end of the world had come. It's so unusual, I didn't think it was the same in other countries

As a BOTW fan and a Genshin fan, I can say, I thought it was good for games to take inspiration from others. (Also, with me loving BOTW I already knew I was gonna love Genshin)
I don't have a Switch so I am unable to play the two new Legend of Zelda games. I'm glad I can get a similar experience from Genshin

so the thing with the game awards:
The finalists were : Sonic Frontiers, Genshin Impact, Stray, GoW Ragnarok and Elden Ring
Early on, Sonic frontiers was leading, genshin wasn't even close to winning... BUT, Sonic fans decided to be dickheads, and started taunting genshin impact. One of the most notable thing that happened, was someone drew an illustration of Lumine getting Beaten to hell, by Sonic, Kratos, and the other nominees, it wasn't a meme format, IT WAS A NEW ILLUSTRATION.
this started to get attention on the chinese side of genshin, which they didn't even know there was an awards, so they started voting IN SPITE. at the end Genshin Won by a landslide, and to makes thing more humiliating there were vote botting, but turns out most of the bots was voting for Sonic, which all got removed by Geoff (genshin has some, but not as much as sonic bot votes)
And then the slander came when they said, Hoyoverse bribed players with gems, but actually, Hoyoverse didn't promise anything and only gave some gems (800 lmao, some toxic genshin fans were mad at this) AFTER the awards has ended.
Lumine is my second main, why they gotta do her like that😭
Even funnier is that Genshin did the least amount of marketing for the award. Hoyo did not even bother to ask their players to vote in that specific award. A good majority of the players did not even know Genshin was nominated, let alone losing. Hopefully, that teaches sonic fans not to poke at communities much much much larger than them. Though I'm very skeptical that they learned anything.
Too bad I wasn't able to play during that time. 5 free pulls sounds kind of nice. Also yes I definitely heard that bribery rumor. Apparently didn't stop me from trying the game as soon as I could
big respect for Mihoyo's favorite first born child Kiana for carrying them to it's success as an Asian this is like an Asian parents saying to it's child " you are our future " or in short, you owe us your life now make us rich.
Excited for more kiana on mihoyo's games, it all started with her and it will end with her.

@@dohuuhailong8352 to be fair, everytime Kiana is involved she became a key character related to the end of the story.
So im going to assume they will be introducing all of the other Honkai Gakuen / Impact counterparts first such as Seele, Bronya and recently Mei with Acheron. After that when the story is about to reach some sort of climax or a conflict about to start they will then introduce Kiana into HSR.
The Kiana we get will either be a counterpart or Kiana from HI3rd (apparently Finality power allowed her to freely travel through the imaginary tree).
I actually started play Mihoyo games back in 2013, I remember it being Honkai impact (gakuen) 2nd and I loved it (I was wondering why there wasn’t a 1st and was told it got exploited and ppl can get millions gems for free and that when mihoyo up’ed their security system) and by the time Honkai impact 3rd came out I downloaded it and it just blew my mind. The combat was just so much better than the other games I played before and I wasn’t able to find any other game that had that level of combat experience. It just felt real. I just loved how each character fight with different moves. And by the time I was still young and I didn’t even understand “grinding” or “farming” I just played the game casually on and off just for the combat. Until one day, I saw the beta for Genshin. That was the time I was obsessed with Breath of the wild and I was sooooo excited for a free version of Zelda (no offense). And before I know it, I became a day one Genshin player. It’s been wild to look back at how Mihoyo really just kept me around as a long term customer and how far they’ve gone from a company with only 3 ppl.
The fact that the CN community were somehow more furious than the global was fuelled by other Chinese gaming company behind the scene (it was conspiracy theory but some of it was proven by evidence.) Although Breath of the wild was a awesome game, it did not have a huge player base in the CN community, well, before Genshin’s release announcement. Millions of them seemed to come out of nowhere right after Mihoyo’s announcement. To this date CN ppl are still very meticulous about mentioning to their friends that they play Genshin bc they are afraid they will be ostracized and called “weeb” because of the all the hatred that other gaming companies are spreading. My personal experience for almost 3 years ngl. There’s still a dedicated Tieba page (reddit equivalent) for ppl to find “evidence” that Genshin took inspiration from any other game and making a big fuss about it. (Yes inspiration not even “copying”).
Also Genshin makes a lot of culturalized content, like Liyue, Liyue’s lantern rite, Yunjin’s performance etc., don’t get me wrong they are FANTASTIC and the global audience likes it, but imo hyv was under pressure to make those content to shut those toxic ppl up and prevent them from getting shutdown for “favouring Japanese culture”. It’s sad to see those awesome content can be a product of toxicity and hatred.
Lmao. I remember zombiegal kawaii. I played it when I was in highschool. I thought it was pretty fun. When I heard the name mihoyo once i checked out genshin impact, i recognized them. I was amazed when I saw the progress tbh.

From 3 young Otakus to one of the most profitable game companies and all that within just about 10 years, I must say that’s truly impressive.
God, 2012 was so long ago. I remember one day during 2012, in a car with, I think just my mom, and remembering seeing a trailer for that 2012 movie (don't remember when it came out, but it sorta stuck out in my mind at the time I guess.) and thinking "Oh yeah, wasn't the world supposed to end this year?" And I can't remember if I asked my mom about it, but If I did then she also dismissed it quickly. What a calm day that was.
maybe its just me but i think visually, genshin looked loads better than breath of the wild. sure they took inspiration from it with a lot of the mechanics on exploration, but i think they overtook it quite fast and set their own identity immediately. The overworld alone looks much more alive and actually populated while botw had a lot of empty spaces

The Switch release is delayed because of lackluster hardware. They literally called the platform outdated potato trash.

Kiana literally best girl for carrying MiHoYo and still carrying the company to prosper their gaming development. We can criticize all we want from their games (I have a lot of those criticisms mostly from Genshin and some bits from HI3 & HSR) but I still appreciate on how they still stand even in the recent year. Still waiting for ZZZ to come out.

Damn! I didn't know I had been connected to Mihoyo longer than I thought. Girl GunZ was the mobile game I enjoyed playing before. Before, when I didn't have the opportunity to play PC, PS, and online games. Genshin made my pandemic days not so depressing.
29:44 150 million was for GGZ only, according to app magic honkai 3rd already made 800-900 million for mobile only in its lifetime. They might already hit 1 billion if mihoyo ever released the actual revenue since genshin in appmagic made only 2 bill where in mihoyo report they made more than 4 billions usd
Appmagic was completely wrong and is still wrong till now. Just after 3 years (late 2019), a report about CN mobile game industry showed it made $1b revenue, that's how HI3 supported the enormous fund to build Genshin. Genshin project was started early 2017 (almost a year after CN HI3's release).
Small fun facts about mihoyo:
1- Liu wei had to convince a friend of his to draw sprite work for GGZ with a beer because he lacked the money to actually hire an artist
2- Liu wei couldnt pay for VAs for insert songs in ggz initially so all the songs were voiced by hatsune miku and teto
3- One of the employment conditions in mihoyo was "playing devil may cry" (this was revealed around APHO1 times)
4- Well because of this mihoyo went through plagiarism claims by DMC fans because of movesets in APHO1
Mihoyo is not perfect. But they reinvested like billion in Genshin (so essentially 10 times initial investment), while throwing money back at Honkai and investing heavily in Star Rail. That's why they continue being successful.
Fun fact: In a recent speech (idk what event it was at, but the footage can be found on youtube) Dawei aka. Mr. CEO himself talked about the success of Hoyoverse in recent years. Despite acknowledging Genshins success, he confirmed that Honkai Impact is his favourite child, and that he will make sure to keep the Honkai franchise going till the end

I strongly believe, Genshin was supposed to be the way to wide Honkai's lore - as it's in fact, Bubble universe inside Sea of Quanta.
They wanted to make money, to fund Honkai Impact 3rd and if i'm not mistaken was little after the Oddysey Open World. It was so hyped as it brought complete free move sets and had Devil May Cry vibes.
Honkai Impact 3rd is slowly optimized to run smoothly with new battle suits on mobiles, but sadly you need moderately to new phone of the series.
(Remember, when Herrscher of the Void Kiana came in co-op? Well that's a salt experience xD)

That's not what Da Wei said. He said direct quote "Honkai is our dream game". Genshin and all their other games are parts of honkai.
And this is not a presentation of the success of hoyoverse, this is a presentation of the Event in Hi3rd. Why would Da Wei even talk about other games at honkai's presentation, they have never talked about their other games at the presentations of their games.
Or do you think that since genshin brought them success, they now have to talk about it every second in every place? CN Honkai fans will literally tear them alive if they do. CN honkai player went to the Mihoyo building to kill the founders of the company because they didn't add a bunny costume to the game. It's dangerous to talk to such fans about something that might not please them.
I am a big fan of the cinematic animations from Honkai Impact 3, it really does remind me of the animations and graphics of Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ.
Honestly I'm not one of those people who were so mad about the sonic vs genshin I love both of them

The mainland China hate of Genshin was so fucking massive at the time.
It got wrapped into the label of "Chinese Knockoff/ counterfeit/IP theft".
It was so loud, that months later, I would be watching Accented Cinema's video "The most shameless Chinese knockoff" talking about some movies, and near the end of the vid, Genshin gets a dishonourable mention.
On one hand, I get it, when your national stereotype is producing knockoffs, seeing what you perceive as a BOTW knockoff game being on one of the largest platforms in the world (Sony), I get the anger.
The issue is that that perception is just incorrect, thus that anger becomes meaningless and cruel.
Apparently some local and even national news stations reported Genshin as a BOTW knockoff as well.
That was how big of a sentiment it was.

ZOmbiegal Kawaii was my first Mihoyo game, my mom's old iPhone 4 still has it installed (and I've played their successive games ever since) XD
mindblowing… as an anime fan I enjoyed Gun girlz Z few yrs ago… didnt realize they are the same devs who made genshin and hsr… they really match my taste
Yeah GGZ was pretty much their blueprint for future games, especially the Honkai franchise. Many recurring characters in the future games after GGZ such as Kiana (obviously), Mei, Bronya, Seele, etc. Heck, they even reused GGZ character design in Genshin such as Raiden Ei(Mei) or Yae Miko(Yae Sakura).
Though sadly some chars are still stuck on GGZ that I wish Mihoyo would bring back such as Houraiji Kyuusyou (Chuunibyou girl with pretty cool jacket / coat).

I recall playing GGZ back when I was 13 or something and it was honestly one of the better games back at the time, and when hi3 came out, I played it for about 1-2 weeks and quit coz the beginning of the story didn't feel like an actual beginning, characters are also 100% at maxed friendship when we knew absolutely nothing about them. Although, the main reason why I quit hi3 back then was the grind with no quick lite system that we have today.
Like, I did recall people downloaded hi3 like crazy back then but it also died extremely quicker than other gacha games I've played.
That feeling when I got invested in Mihoyo because of a stupid ass Chinese anime mobile shooter and a few years later it turns out that the devs were insane geniuses… 😂😂😂

I remember trying out GGZ back in 2015 when I wasn't aware of Mihoyo (I didn't stick with it long though; came back to it later but couldn't catch up since I got back into it just a month before global server shutdown). Then when I started playing Honkai Impact 3rd in 2018, I thought "HUH these three characters (Kiana, Mei, Bronya) look familiar".
Realized soon after that GGZ was also from Mihoyo when Honkai veterans were trying to explain the whole zombiegal kawaii/Houkai Gakuen/GGZ stuff to some of us newbies in the Honkai Impact 3rd reddit xD
The reddit was also where I learned the mihoyo history so some of the stuff in this video I was like "oh hey, I remember reading about this"

The very 1st game I play is Honkai Gakuen 2 or Gungirl Z, but I only play like a few week and then getting tired of playing it and also because of my potato phone running out of storage at that time. And back to like 2016 or 2017, my brother drag me into Honkai Impact 3rd and playing it on CN server using Bilibili account, at that time I didn't play HI3 continuosly like play for a year then stop for a year, and then the time when i start playing back HI3 is during the story of HOV got release. And I'm still quite enjoying HI3 by now even though its on CN server.

i dropped a lot of Turn base games even Epic Seven and others in just a week of playing
but somehow i play Star rail every day now (started before 1.1 patch)
and already spend $100 and willing to spend another $100 for Fu Xuan lightcone
(after getting I.Lunae guaranteed with only 20 pulls needed then i have enough Jades for Fuxuan 50/50 and even if i lose 50/50 still have enough for guaranteed but no more jades for her Lightcone)

Zenless Zone Zero 1st trailer already made me so interested on the game it made me feel i want these characters
even Punishing Gray Raven, TOF and other anime waifu gatcha games i didn't feel anything after watching their game trailers and character trailers
only games outside Hoyoverse is Girls Frontline 2 and Snow break that i got interested/i want to pull for the charcters

watching edited versions aren't quite the same because I like to listen to the banter that goes on in the full streams or if i'm looking back at chat comments 'cause sometimes there's interesting discussions going on
People who have never played Pokemon? I'm one of them. Yeah, I may have watched an episode or two of the first season of Pokemon, but that was before it and everything Nintendo was banned from my country and they stayed banned until the release of the Nintendo Switch when it was finally lifted. So yeah, we pretty much never had any Nintendo in our culture. Where the moms would refer to any game console as a Nintendo, here moms refer to any game console(and in some cases, computers) as a Playstation. At best we maybe had one of those games that are basically 1000+ old NES games compiled into a CD with bad English translations, but we wouldn't know that they came from Nintendo.

Also “honkai” is cn “houkai” is jp, ggz (gg2 for cn) got renamed to houkai gakuen (still gg2 in cn I think) was to match the lore with HI3rd and served as prequel
