Justin Timberlake continues to show more ambition than the average pop artist with song lengths and structures, but longer tracks hardly make up for thin production and even thinner lyrics.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

5/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
thin production...bruh are we listening to the same album
Dude, he needs better headphones!!!
Ikr
Yeah...I get the feeling that Justin didn’t sign his t-shirt while he was front row at Justin’s concert. He didn’t see you bro! It’s ok!
Listening to this album tons in 2023, it's very clear Anthony pretty much only listened to the singles and listened to them in tinny headphones.
Don't Hold the Wall is not only an amazing JT song, but an amazing Timbaland showcase. Tunnel Vision also contains some of the bass Anthony claims isn't there.
What a melon lol
Thin production?..........I'm not sure you listened properly.
+BboyLorcan
I agree with him. It's not that every song in the world needs to have a bassline, but here they just don't work many times. Mirrors and Let The Groove feels especially like they're incomplete.
@@yellowpsychopath OK BOOMER ! BACK TO YOUR CAVE

Hey! I Would Die 4 U has great bass!
+Osama Bin Wheelie That one is smartly written, full of musical flavour, and really edgy for it's time.
you should see his review for the album...
That's about right. Prince generally never really had any remarkable bass on most of his records. Makes sense. Otherwise his melodies would have sounded far too cheesy for a rockstar.
@@rafearcher7882 he mix different genres so he is not a pure rockstar
Mirrors being a worst track is insane 😂
Facts. Certified classic
It’s literally the best track
Frrr. Its literally one of if not his best song ever
He said in his last review of jt that mirror has withheld the test of time
5/10?? i don't usually listen to this type of music (hiphop only), but this album was fucking dope, I was very impressed
Caught red handed, me too haha
You should really expand your musical taste. There is a lot of great pop albums in fact I would say Pop is a better genre than Hip Hop Rap atm
@@barrydabee6752I have, and many others have, you’re not special. This album is fantastic
@@KanyeWestIsTheGOAT- I have listened to the album dipass read my comment correctly before you try to diss me even though you think Kanye is still good lmfao
@@barrydabee6752 you just said literally nothing. I read your comment and I attacked everything you said.
Also what? Man you really are an edge lord. Everyone thinks Ye is still good, he has the acclaim, widespread success and longevity till this day to back it up.
You sure are shallow, yikes
Mirrors is one of the best songs of the decade.
The video is amazing too.
I'm not even into love songs and Mirrors is in my opinion one of the best songs of all time
yeah sometimes Melon is off (which is totally fine) and this is one of the cases
I don't love 20/20 Experience either, but 5/10 is too low and Mirror is EASILY one of the best pop songs of the decade (tho I don't need the second half)
Also one the best performances with the Tennessee Kids on SNL
Yes
We clearly weren't listening to the same album. lol!
😂
7 years later, we are certainly not enjoying the 2020 experience
Lol
💀😭
I'm still enjoying it

i love that song so much
classicnick111 I never said that was why I liked it.

classicnick111 i can't just forget the scar you left on my heart
Blue Ocean Floor is a phenomenal track. That much cannot be denied.
I love that song
I think this album was atleast a 7
Jah-mal Calderon at least a 9*.
Massi Boutou yea
It’s a rating based on Anthony’s enjoyment not on the quality of the album (sorry ik this is 6 years later but I assume you still watch his videos and the same applys)
@@massiboutou3631 Agreed
it's a 9 for me
are my eyes and ears alright??? I just heard someone saying mirrors is not a good track. wtf ??
coming back to this album and the deluxe in 2021, I can say this album is amazing. it really creates a vibe I personally love
I remember the 20/20 vision 2 album came out when I was about 7 and it’s still in almost every playlist I have, this album as well, almost every song is unique but just as good as the last and the next
This album is absolutely legendary. The production is outstanding and deserved at least one Grammy nom. Mirrors also deserved Record of the Year IMO.
Timbaland and JT will never not be an iconic duo
I thought this album was pretty great. It did take awhile to grow on me, which is unique from most pop albums. Most good pop albums are pretty instantaneous. Part 2 didn't do much for me tho
10 years later, this is still one of the biggest blunder of Melon. I'd be interested to see his take on it today. 2020 was probably on par with Futuresex/lovesound in terms of peak Justin
He talked about The 20/20 experience in his tier list of Billboards top 10 songs of 2013. He still doesn't like it, but Mirrors seems to have grown on him, since he said it was at least okay or decent, maybe even a tad better than that. But here he rated Mirrors as the worst track on a 5/10 album.
20/20 is far above Future sounds. 20/20 is his masterpiece
Blue Ocean Floor is the best song on the album in my opinion.
This right here is a bad take that no one talks about
I swear everyone only goes for Damn or MBDTF but he has at least like 20 crazier takes, this is probably one of them
Whaaaaa Mirrors is a awesome song
.
classicnick111 who cares, It's his opinion
Sure it was a good track, but I really understand his point that, it's really just an nsync track but it's just him.
ErR0r 4554 and I don’t really understand why that’s bad. NSYNC made great songs, many written by JT himself. Idk why it feeling more like an NSYNC song is so bad
Suit and Tie is still one of my all time favorite pop songs
Having mirrors as the worst song should be a crime
Weird, I fucking loved the kick in this album.
Easily one of melon's worst takes. This is a strong 8 at worst.
This album was on point Anthony, take a re-listen in 2018 please.
7 out of 10
This is one of the few pop albums I genuinely enjoy listening to. I don't understand how you didn't enjoy it
So I went digging for this review and.... you're least favorite song is mirrors???!?!?!?! MIRRORS!? Maybe I am super bias because the music video really tied it all in for me, but it is a very nice love song. Genuine and colorful considering the other pop music love songs.
@@yesterday1788 wait when?!
Ninkimbi nevermind, I should have watched the video first, but still 2020 experience is at least an 8/10 album, and this man also said Kissland by The Weeknd wasn’t good in the my dear melancholy video
@@yesterday1788 Kiss Land is a 5 at best to me

I think Cal may be a representation of Anthony's perception of his comment sections.
yeah hahaha that's exactly what I thought, when you watch the ending of first episode of y u no review for example, (i think it's the first but i'm not completely sure) you can see it clearly, it ends with quite long Cal complaint about Anthony not reviewing stuff but underneath it you can kinda feel that Anthony tries to defend and justify himself
Damn, mirrors is one of my favorite songs of the decade
Same sometimes fantano is just a nonsense twat... Now someone will defend him xDdd
i really enjoyed this album, thought it was really produced amazingly.
Bro clearly just hates JT.
wait... 2013 Anthony looked for meaning in pop music?? i don't see him reviewing the current wave of vapid cloudrap hit albums with the same standard now lmao
really strange how this got a 5/10 yet 'what's your pleasure?' got album of the year from him, and i had to stop listening halfway through that album because it was that repetitive and vapid.
He probably looks back now and Justin looks like Shakespeare lol
I actually really like Blue Ocean Floor. You may not totally agree lol, but it reminds me of a Radiohead track in a way..it puts me in this deep introspective kind of aquatic, twinkly eyed peace..I can't explain it but if there were something I really took away that I immensely enjoyed it was the soundscape of that track, it was like something out of a dark dream and I always find myself drifting away with it.
Oh, how did you know?
Calling Timbaland’s production “thin” is insane
You lost me on this one...5? Really?! I put this album on repeat for a week straight. Even when I go back to the album now, I still find it to be an enjoyable listening experience. Never going to subscribe.
8 years later and this album (both part 1 and 2) is one of the best albums i’ve ever listened too and connected with. Everything is different and sounds well put together with production. Classic
terrible review, great album
Holy fuck this might be fantano's worst review
Nahh bro this album a classic and the production is insane. it still holds up a decade later.
So what? He's trying to make a living.
Lmao
Lol was ur yt channel not big yet when u wrote this?
Say wuuuuut... the production was absolutely top-notch! Songwriting may have been a little weak, but I honestly don't understand how you could not be amazed by the dazzling production quality on this album. You crazy, Mr. Fantano.
everything is related to death grips
REDO THIS REVIEW CAUSE DAMN..
I find it strange that you don't hold guys like A$AP Rocky responsible for their lyrics cuz "come on, that's not what he's known for," but JT's "it's just pop" excuse is bullshit, in your opinion.
well this is going in the "shitty melon reviews" like man this is in your top 10 worst for sure.
This, all of his Weeknd reviews, Blank Face LP, and At.Long.Last.A$AP are definitely unfair.
How is Pusher Love Girl not a flipping fantastic song? Yeah the weird background vocals are annoying, and the lyrics are shit, but the album was pretty different and really good.
trueee
The 2020 experience is not going too well
"A pop album with no bass has no case"
- Anthony Fantano
Dude that's the closest you've gotten to a Calism in a review.
I decided to listen to album while on the train and it’s actually really good sad to hear that you don’t like it
I completely disagree with this review entirely, although your points are valid. The songs that you say aren't deep, I can see that and everyone should be able to. And the songs are very lengthy I agree with this, however Pop songs don't NEED to be deep and he clearly wasn't trying, remember songs from "the four seasons"? Songs like pusher love girl, That girl is like that except with modern day instrumentation. I find this album easy to listen to and catchy as fuck that really doesn't ask for deep speculation like you're treating it, sure Mj and prince have some bangers that are deep and extravagant all the same but as Justin said himself these are mainly just love songs and if you just look at these tracks as love songs and nothing else maybe you could appreciate it a little more.
Btw I don't like a bunch of songs on here but the ones I do like I find them as gems. I very much like suit and tie, pusher love, that girl, blue ocean floor etc
The 2020 experience has become something entirely different this year...
I'd give it an 8/10. I enjoyed the hell out of this album
Sometimes I genuinely wonder if melon and I are listening to the same song
Can't believe you ignored part 2. I really wanted to hear what you thought of it -- even though I didn't agree with you in this first part. I think it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the different approach Justin took to it. I myself find the second part to be much more solid.
8 years and still best album ever for me
hes definetely corny and the songwriting isnt superb. But I just enjoyed this overall. Maybe because i'm in a relationship and it kind of resonates for me
One of the best albums of the decade. Sorry but you got this one so wrong.

+jjforyomama lol
You know, even after listening to the first song, He is totally making sense. There isn't much here. It's new, it's certainly catchy, but it doesn't keep me here. It's certainly not bad, but it's not as good as people are making out to be. Oh, and Jay Z, wh..what..the..heck bro? JT gives you a seriously good hook on Holy Grail..and you give him this piece on Suit and Tie!? Jacked up.
Didn't he make these 20 songs in 20 days? I don't remember.
yes
Yupp, him and Timbaland.
I think it was 5 songs more than that even, so 25 songs in 20 days. The complete 20/20 experience deluxe has 25 songs.
Least fav track: Mirrors 😭😭
This honestly is one of my biggest disagreements with Anthony. I think this album honestly holds up, and I’ve always thought its a pretty good record. Yeah, it definitely isn’t a 10, but for sure should be a 7 or atleast a strong 6.
Your analysis of Suit & Tie is completely off. Your opinion, I know. But I've seen quite a few of your videos recently, and you seem to have unrealistically high standards for every album you review.
Light 5 ??? Wow man you really hate good music ain't you ?? This is at least a strong 8 🤦
Gotta love peoples response when they are huge JT fans instead of analyzing the music for the musics sake.
He's right about Jay Zs verse in suit and tie. That's my least favorite part about the song.
Fantano ahead of the curve with Timberlake hate.
He was ahead of the curve with the 2020 hate
...really? Aside from Mirrors, I thought this moved further away from the boyband vibe. I actually think JT is one of the few artists who actually knows how to work with the electronic sound. I mean, I could listen to Blue Ocean Floor all day, which I could never do with a boyband song.
Mirrors how can it be your least favourite. The song has grown on me so much. Just pure gold 💗
" A pop album without Bass has not Case " Fucking write that down WikiQuotes
My only gripe is that the songs are really, REALLY long.
Timbaland is a genius
I love this album but I can understand all the criticisms here except for saying it lacks bass. What where you listening to it on? The bass in Tunnel Vision, Don't Hold The Wall, Suit & Tie, and well, basically every track except Blue Ocean Floor and maybe Pusher Love Girl is deep and plentiful. And I've bumped this album on the 12-inch sub in my car heaps.
There's a difference between feeling the bass from your car stereos and feeling the bass in your body. Anyone can put bass on a song, but what Anthony means is that there's not a lot of bass that doesn't just serve as a foundation for a song. The bass needs to be more daring and interesting to get the groove on.
So this album ABSOLUTELY shows a fine line between nsync jt and today jt... did u hear electric lady or cabaret or drink you away or that girl??? I think you're wrong, this album IS deep and part one AND two are both amazing records. Take back the night, strawberry bubblegum, spaceship coupé?? Come on now lol
The second part is significantly lesser, but I agree, part one is jts best
actually its more a timbaland lp then justin timbalake
My only, *_ONLY_* problem were two things. Some songs felt slightly drawn out for a bit too long in some song's parts. The other problem I had (that is a mostly shared problem in pop) is the lack diversity in subject matter. Most of the songs deal with relationships and all of that. That all being said, this is my second favorite album of all time. The production was diverse and incredible, the lyrical structure alone in each song was unconventional and really refreshing in terms of creativity and execution. And Mirrors? That's my number one favorite song of all time (at least until I hear something as complex and with that same depth).
Mirrors is such a good song bro
This is prob his best album ever.
Buddy get your ears checked because we wasn’t listening to the same album!!!
Another thing to keep in mind, and I've heard this said about Will Smith as well, being an actor tends to pay way more than recording an album. Maybe around Futuresex, he was honing his craft a little more as he wasn't as actively acting, but nowadays it seems like putting an album out is an obligation to fans asking him to return to music. So maybe his thoughts in the studio were "Let's put out something that will show I love those people" rather than "Let's do something because I love music."
Please do a classics review for MJ's Off the Wall.
Now that we’re in 2021, I gotta ask, how does this album compare to your 2020 experience?
This review is a disgrace. Definitely a top 10 album of the decade, who hurt you in life?
nah hun the production fucking blows
take it for what it is, a fun pop record
i had to stop at 9.30
i think that Justin has come a loong freakin way musically and i feel like it's just the beginning. i would never compare his songs (nor his voice!) from 15 years ago to "let the groove get in", "don't hold the wall" or "drink you away". im not crazy about the 3 singles from the 20/20....but the rest is magnificent to me.
This video is the reason music critics sick, they haven't got anything on the actual artists
Jay Parikh "Justin Timberlake CONTINUES to show more ambition than the average pop artist with song lengths and structures, but longer tracks hardly make up for thin production and even thinner lyrics." Did you even read the description?
Yeah I agree, I think he doesn't sound the same as he did in nsync if not better..the only song I see that sounds nsyncish is Not A Bad Thing
I actually love all those songs you mentioned but I agree that this album was awesome. I have been listening to it nonstop.
20/20 experience sounded dated
Honestly i don't think you get the idea behind the Lp. It was an experience indeed. This is coming from a producer myself and artist, as well as one who also grew up to him and have a vast taste in music. I would go into detail about why i disagree with what you said about "Tunnel Vision" especially, but you aren't reading this anyways so...whatever
That Girl,Justin said it's one of his favorites.
Btw i loved both albums and i plan to get both.
Thought the album was meh, but both Mirrors (radio edit) and Not a Bad Thing are masterpieces to me. I'll never forget them. Have not stopped listening to the latter since it came out.
+rocknrollrocksout 2 worst songs on the LPs.
Why did he never review part 2? :(
Mirrors is the best song ever what
Don't agree with this review at all I loved the album it's so smooth and enjoyable to listen too. The song Blue Ocean Floor reminds me of Pink Floyd.
MIRRORS LEAST FAVE????? WHAT THE HELL????
we need a redux of this review this is straight up hating
Mirrors was amazing
Eve though this review was kind of expected, this album is really solid
I didn't think the albums sound was bad but yeah Justin's lyrics have always been an after thought
13 minutes is a long time to say you didn’t get something
This album review has aged VERY well. Fantano saw the JT fall of grace before we did. This album has not aged gracefully and doesn’t even hold a candle to his first 2 albums
Are you going to review part 2 of the 20/20 experience?
Justin Timberlake predicted 2020?!?!
