I thought those machining marks look bad, but it actually looks cool with the Cerakote/Gun Candy. There could probably be a cool way to mix these kinds of effects with laser cutting to make really nice color changing patterns.
Now that is wet on wet on wet on wet. I've been a certified PPG collision painter for 31yrs now and in the collision paint world there is no such process. I know Cerakote is a different animal as I have turned my garage into a Cerakote shop. Not having a large bake booth has kept me from making Cerakote a full time job. 4 wheeler frames, motorcycle frames, wheels and suspension parts galore. I have everything to Cerakote specs, I just don't have large baking set up.
That does limit you to C series, but it's better for outdoor products like ATV and car parts. H is more durable, but sucks at UV resistance.
I’ve done a couple guns in Stingray. Very cool look!
Absolutely. We haven't messed with FX much yet, but we're hoping it's just as cool.
It looks good I'm just not a fan of anything above a matte finish on firearms. Just a personal preference of mine. To me the gloss cheapens the color and hard work.....on any firearm.
Not my thing either, but they pay, we spray.
I know this video is a little old...but i just went hack and watched it again
But i have a question..
I work for a manufacturer of big trucks..tractor trailer big.
I am a painter and watching you spray this stuff on, i am wondering with the speed you are going and the number of coats....how do you not run it? We dont use typical automotive paint its more of a thicker industrial texture/type paint (has to hold up to lots)...but if i painted like thst, it would be running to the floor...
How does that not happen? Low volume? Etc?
Love your work, always watch new stuff..
Thanks!!
One of the things we beat into people in our training is "It's coating, not paint." If the gun is dialed in right, you pretty much have to stop to get orange peel. If you don't layer it up to 1 mil minimum, it might as well not be there. We get that a lot in our classes from folks that spray cars.
@@BransonCerakote that makes sense..
Thank you for your quick response and explanation .
You just bought yourself a customer (stencils) and i know where im coming for training as soon as i can get the vacation.
Thanks!
@@stoots1000 Glad to help, and we'd enjoy having you. :)
So Cerakote FX is just pearl or color change flakes you add to clear. Why not just use other additives from automotive paint industry?
It has to be the right micron to go through the nozzle without issues. If the particles are too large, they also tend to sag. Having said that, there's no reason why you couldn't do some R and D.
Have you done the Phoenix guncandy? I am having trouble finding more than a few examples online
We have. Spray a base of black, let it sit for 20 minutes. Spray the Guncandy mixed with H series Gloss Clear over the wet base. Let it sit for an additional 20 minutes. Bake.
Hello sir! Love your videos. Do you stuff/etch before putting the guncandy on for better adhesion?
You sand the surface, lay down a base coat, then full bake it. Once it cools, spray on the candy.
What about coating over a new barrel that’s not Cerakoted like melonited can you do a light sand blast and coat the barrel without a base
You probably could, but the advantage to adding it over the Cerakote is the durability. Also, there may be a color variation.
Another great video! I know the answer to this question has been covered in past videos but what brand of spray gun set up do you use? I've been researching airbrush guns along with regular paint sprayers... Thanks again for the help!
I use an Iwata LPH80 for all of the basic spraying. For clear coat, gun candy, and microslick, I use cheap ebay guns. Just make sure they have a metal cup, not a plastic one.
I have a Grex airbrush, but I honestly only use it a couple of times a month.
@@BransonCerakote Im getting ready to spray gun candy for the first time. Why don't you use the Iwata? Does it ruin it somehow? I may have the stock up on some China Freight specials... Thanks!
@@DesertBallistics It is almost impossible to get it all out. We've found that any of the clears eventually destroy whatever gun you spray them with. Might as well be a cheap gun instead of a $300 Iwata.
@@BransonCerakote exactly why my brother and I spray duracote with the 20$ China freight gun
@@krunkkills1 Nothing wrong with duracote, just not my jam.
Was going to try some gun candy in a multicam kind of setup. Are you able to use stencils with gun candy? Or will the clearcoat seal in the stencils onto the guns surface?
Couple of problems. Once you spray clear, you only have a few minutes to add more because it starts to set up. The second problem is that it doesn't work very well layered up thick. It tends to run.
@@BransonCerakote i paint resin helmets with automotive paints and figured as much. I was just asking because I saw on your finished product it looks like you have some stenciled emblems.
Watching the video again I can see the stencil is in place on the lower while you’re spraying. When did you remove it?
@@DarkKnightFX About 60 seconds after spraying the gun candy, lol.
When spraying the gun candy, are you masking off all the open ports so that you don’t get any on the inside surfaces of the gun? Or is that of no concern? I’m about to spray some on an upper and lower and want some tips.
We generally use high heat plugs.
first off your videos are very helpful thanks! does graphite black give you the best results for gun candy? I tried armor black with caiman an it was alright I just want the colors to pop as much as possible. was considering using gloss black but wanted to see what your thoughts were.
The only black we spray is graphite. I've had good luck with that, but some of the colors need a matching base
Kandy yes I use k. The lighter the color the more the pop n pearl the darker the color the more the pop. There opposite dosen't mean can't be used either way, depend look ur going for. 30 year multi certification painter.
@@RSB_Frank I'm wanting to spray my upper and lower in pegasus, do I need to paint another color underneath the top coat in order to get a color shift? Or does the color shift mostly depend on what color your base is?
Do you use strainers with the gun candy ins if so what mesh size
100 mesh going into the container. Mix in the pearls. Shake, and use. Don't strain it going into the gun or you'll lose a lot of the pearl.
I have a question for you, I have not used the clear Are you laying it heavy or does it just look that way? I know when I cerakote or even Duracoat I spray it thin.
If it's just clear, one good wet coat. If it's gun candy, two or three lighter coats layered up. With either, you aren't really spraying it on the surface as much as creating a cloud that falls on the surface.
Nice!-quick question, my friend wants a slide done with a gloss sides and a matte finish on top. It's a 1911 that had an original high gloss finish and target matte top. Any advice?
Degrease, gas, sand. Coat with whatever H series you'd like. Hard bake. Let it cool. Run some tape down the top of the slide, and clear coat the sides. Let it cure for a couple of hours. Peel the tape. Let it cure for 4-5 days to hard cure. Reassemble and start making everyone at the range jealous.
He wants matte black so I was thinking armor? And then just gloss clear on the sides? Have you done this before to get the target top effect? You wouldn't gloss black it, tack out, then tape off the sides and armor black down the top? Thank you
Either way. I only use graphite black. Another way would be to graphite black (or whatever black) the whole thing, tack it, then tape off the top and spray the whole thing with gloss black.
Hey john. Got a question. How do you go about mixing the gun candy and the c series clear together? I have a customer wanting a revolver done in razor back. I’ve never messed with gun candy and clear. I bought a 4oz tester of c series clear. Do I just put all the razor back into it? With a strainer? lol sorry for the long winded question
Just dump the container of gun candy in Don't shake the clear, it will give you bubbles. Just swirl the bottle to incorporate the gun candy. Don't strain it into the gun, or you lose the candy.Spray at 30 psi.
Branson Cerakote thank you sir!
@@23kings70 Glad to help.
I've used gun candy the h301 with the gun candy. Did a decent job just went on really thick. What clear do you normally use with it?
MC156. I have never used the H series clear. I've heard about too many problems with it.
Hi John, can you spray gun candy directly over an existing anodizing ?
I've never tried it. If you email Brandon at Gun-Candy.com, he could probably answer that for you.
how long will the paint last
Cerakote or the clear with gun candy mixed in?
An I ask why hard baking before clear with candy. Normally you just flash out
We were using C series clear in this video. You have to bake the basecoat out all the way, let it cool, then spray the C series clear with the pigment mixed in. Let it sit for 5-7 days, and it's done. With H series clear, you spray the base, let it sit for 20 minutes, then spray the clear/pigment. Let that sit for an additional 20 minutes, then bake.
@@BransonCerakote cheers buddy, was wondering for a moment ☺️
Can you do a battleworn finish with the gun candy?
I suppose you could, but it's just going to look scratched up. The reason most people want gun candy is because it's shiny. Taking a ScothBrite to it would just dull it up.
I recently tried spraying some rose gold gun candy on an ar and it did not go so well. I didn’t get much coverage of the black base and it was streaky. I’m guessing most of my problems stem from spraying over anodize so I’m wondering how you’re setting your gun to spray ie what psi and how wet your applying. Any help would be great because I’m new to pearls and clears. Thanks a bunch.
30 psi. Test your volume on a piece of paper or cardboard. As soon as you see any color at all, stop dialing it in. Spray about twice as fast as you would for H series. It usually takes 8-12 passes.
Do you always spray the upper, lower, barrel, GB, & tube together like that? I noticed you keep a lot of your stuff together in most of your vids too. Also, how do you get away with 2- hours @ 180°? I am asking because my oven only gets up to about 230° and I was worried about that.
I spray everything stripped apart for the base coat, but once you get ready to either stencil, or clear coat, I spray it mocked up to make everything flow.
The polymer is 180 for 2 hours. If I misspoke, it was an accident. Metal is an hour at 300.
@@BransonCerakote is it ok to coat barrel too?
@@pinoykillaz438 Depends on how much shooting you're planning on doing. Heat is the deciding factor.
@@BransonCerakote well its going to be on upper and lower receiver.i dont think those part generaye enough heat?
@@pinoykillaz438 Upper and lower would be fine. Barrels are where it gets tricky.
Just wondering I heard mixed things do I need add catalyst to the gun candy some people said I should and some say I shouldn’t what’s your guys thoughts
Depends on which clear you are using. If it starts with an H, it's oven cure and needs hardener. If it starts with MC, then it's air cure and doesn't need it.
You are using c-series clear? I have had mixed results with their H-series stuff. I found if I spray the h-series clear on a "wet" base, it will actually stick.
Yep. I've heard mixed results with the H. I've never had an issue with the MC-156/157 though.
Is the gun candy a Cerakote finish or just a paint finish?
Shane its a flake that is added to the clear coat.
How durable is this vs like ion bonding?
I've never dealt with Ion bonding, so no clue really. The clear is about as durable as any other C series. The pigment doesn't add or subtract any durability from the clear itself.
So base coat gets baked for 2.5 hours at 180 degrees and after the gun candy how long did you bake it?
Base coat bake time depends on substrate. If it's polymer, you bake it for 2 hours at 180. If it's metal, 2 hours at 250. The clear also depends on which one you are using. If it's one of the MC series, you don't bake it at all. It is air cure only, and baking will actually make it fail. If you are using H series clear, then just spray it wet on wet, and follow the same bake schedule above.
Thank you
@@eddiefrayle Glad to help.
does the gun candy run like cerakote at 13psi or is it more like a normal clear coat running gun at higher psi
30 PSI.
Are you baking the graphite black cerakote first then shooting the clear/stingray over it?
Yep. Hard bake the base coat, then spray the gun candy over that. Let the clear cure for 7 days.
Branson Cerakote awesome thanks so let me ask you this if I have a gun that I have already cerakote black can I go ahead and clear/guncandy over and let it sit for 7 days and get the same results? Thanks for the fast response!
You should be able to. Wipe it down with a rag with acetone. Blow it off with high pressure air before you spray.
So... Did you use one of the Cerakote clears or a KG clear?
Cerakote MC156.
@@BransonCerakote Thanks for the reply!
Question, when spraying gun candy I’m getting the flake to run and settle on some of the parts. I’m using armor black base, full bake out, cool the parts down then spray. Spraying @ 20psi
Using MC-156 clear
Do I need to scuff the base? Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Spray it at 40 psi, in quick, light coats. Stop when it starts to look heavy.
@@BransonCerakote I can’t thank you enough! Great video. Huge fan of your work. Looking forward to seeing your future projects.
@@twistedlt4168 Thanks for watching!
I know I’m late but Do you need an H series base coat? Can you get away with an Air Cure C series graphite? Also is the gun candy and clear coat solvent resistant and need to be baked?
You could use C series, but it's durability leaves something to be desired. You'd need to let the C series cure for the full 7 days before spraying on the gun candy.
The clear holds up really well to most chemicals. The only failure I've had was from either sunscreen, or Off.
They make an H series clear, but I've heard nothing but bad things about it's adhesion. We use MC156 with the Gun Candy, which would need to cure an additional 7 days.
Here's a link to our Gun Candy video dealing with only that: ruclips.net/video/Gg1NSdtdHDg/видео.html
Branson Cerakote I hear the C series is not as strong as the H series. Are both of them resistant to brake cleaner?
@@user-zj1uf8hs6t They should be. They are pretty solvent resistant.
Branson Cerakote Alright thank you.
My clear coat bubbles and chips of in high contact areas after baking. What am I doing wrong. H300 baking at 250 for 60 min.
Wish I could help. I've never used the H series clear. I have heard too many horror stories. It does sound like an adhesion issue tho.
Don't think you can use h series onto of h series after a hard bake
do you usually use the h-series or c-series for a base coat? its the first time using gun candy but trying to see what series works best for a base coat.
We haven't used C series in our shop in several years. We either use H series or Elite for the base for Guncandy. Fully bake the base, let it cool, spray on the candy and hang it somewhere out of the way for 7 days.

@@ziggyyester2992 No worries.
What gun are you gun and tip are you using.. doesn't look like the normal iwata?
It doesn't even have a brand name. It's basically a cheap Harbor Freight gun. We have a local store called Tool Town. I get the cheap guns there for around $40, and spray clear through them for 3-4 months until they seize up. Personally, I'd never spray clear coat through my Iwata's. No matter how well you clean after spraying clear coat, it ends up eventually roaching them out.
Branson Cerakote awesome tip! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you!
Thank you for the info on that, bc I just bit the bullet and bought one finally yesterday. I've been wanting to, and I'm anxious to see how it performs.
You'll never regret buying the Iwata. The packing set will go out every few months, and if you don't clean it properly, it will lay some hate on you, but it sprays like a dream. I have three of them.
But the cheap harbor freight gun seems to do really well with the clear. Just remember to spray at 30 psi.
Would like to purchase a gun if it's available
