Most epic music for spraying brake cleaner ever
5 years later still most epic music for sprayin brake cleaer
That brake clean is not good for lawns......hope the grass survived. Extremely epic music.
I figured out years ago while finishing guitars that a collapsible pray Tan booth it perfect for painting things like this. It blocks out the wind, and any dust and dirt being blown around and blocks direct sunlight that can really mess up your finish, while still being outside in the fresh air. When you are done, it folds up relatively small and mostly flat.
One tip, that I found, tape off the threads on the recivers and plug holes where you can...it can make a difference when assembling.
you can buy a cheap sand blasting gun at harbor freight and aluminum oxide. if you can't get a blast cabinet use a large tote and modify it. you'll get longer lasting results. I've been cerakoting sense it was released. Metal finishing for 20 years.
How much does all of that cost?
@ Why Justin Y, have you not ever heard of Google?
Or a gatoraide bottle, cheap air nozzle and an air compressor to push the air through to pull sand from bottle
Looks pretty good man. Just one thing I think will help you. Always "cut" in the hard angles first then go back and do long strokes.
Hollow Ts 4 OGs best advice so far. It looks good. But if if cut those hard angles first it will be much easier to finish off.
This is a perfect "HOW NOT TO APPLY CERAKOTE VIDEO". Cerakote has a complete series on how to properly apply their product. You can still do it at home. Watch their videos. Doing it this way it might look good but it won't durable. You might as well just rattle can it.
Did spraying cerakote in your magazine well cause any problems or make your magazines too tight?
How was assembly ? Any trouble w actions? Mag release sticks on mine hoping it loosens up w time. I’m confident caused by cerekote being too thick. Did one cost as instructed.
you shoulda taped up the threads, why would you cerakote the threads?
Is this cerakote or duracoat. At one point you said duracoate
that grass grow back yet from where that brake cleaner hit it?
How much product did you use? Is the 4 oz tester enough to get the job done? You like those spray things?
What did he do for prepping? They claim you must sand blast and that’s the only right way to do it. Otherwise it won’t hold like a factory finish does
Nice job! Anodize is perfectly fine to paint over, bare aluminum I’d chemical conversion the surface before coating but that’s just the engineer coming out in me.
So do you have to worry about the thickness of the cerakote you spray on interfering with installing all the roll pins and lower parts kit? Or does punching pins through chip or f-up the coating at all? Nice videos man, very good. Thanks.
And thanks especially for that price list. Awesome job man.
Looks like it came out good to me. I have a couple of questions though. What is the coverage like? I have a lower in the raw and an upper that is anodized, will they come out two different shades unless I blast the upper? Also, how hard was it to shoot the inside of that front rail?
Looking for tips/steps added for raw aluminum ? Also did you plug anything on the lower?
That's some pretty intense music for spray painting a rifle lol
Most epic music for killing your grass with brake cleaner ever
How far off is the HIR-265 from the magpul FDE?
3:28 Cerakote specifically states that you should not use round media such as glass beads or shot and that hand sanding is not sufficient. I'm looking at their manual right now.
It's not. Sand blasting etches the metal, which allows the Cerakote to bond directly to the surface. The sand paper or scotch bride method will not allow it to adhere. Bead blasting dimples the surface instead of etching it.
I anser questions every week from DIYers, and don't mind giving advice. Some people like doing it themselves, but if you're going to use Cerakote, you HAVE to follow the instructions if you want even a decent looking finish.
Anodizing is a layer of aluminum oxide that is predominantly an addition to the outside of the aluminum, it can be lasted off just like other finishes. The problem would come from blasting it too far and bringing it out of spec or causing an ugly finish by gouging or galling, or leaving it unfinished and allowing it to oxidize. Then again you probably dont even have to sand all the way through the anodizing, fine abrasive with a fast pass to just dull the surface is likely sufficient.
With anodizing, you just need to scuff it. It's more art than science. The surface will just go from shiny to dull. Be careful though. Too much in one spot will make it uneven, and make your finish look splotchy. Nice even strokes.
The other problem you'll run into, primarily with some of the quad rails is, some are anodized and some aren't. You usually don't know until you start blasting. Anodizing is tough, the other stuff usually comes right off.
How are you not breathing that or getting it all over you or the grass and such? You can rent real spray booths usually...depending on your location. Nice vid otherwise, but that outside areas looks way too windy.
nice job, one future note, spray the hard to cover areas first that way if you mess it up you don't waste a bunch of paint on the easy stuff first.
No sandblasting ???
just a heads up to others if your spraying your upper and lower tape off all holes like the safety and mag release so you dont have to file for hours... and put the recommend mil on unless you like the wore out look.
Lost and found do you have any examples of the tape job done properly?
Why not put the parts in the pan when you sprayed it with brake clean? Did it kill your grass?
VitalGear I have a question I just purchased ATI AR-15 still waiting on for it and i really want to add Flat dark earth to my Rail, buck stock and grip do still need to brakleen & acetone in order to apply the Flat dark earth a respond would be appreciated.
Not trying to be an asshole, but all of the people who comment and say ‘great job’ just to make the guy feel good about it are just enabling him. You wanna help him out? Give him some truthful feedback.
You used to have really pretty grass. Didn’t need to brakekleen if you were doing the acetone
Get a sandblasting cabinet from harbor freight for $100. Then get a 50lb bag of 100 grit aluminum oxide from zoro for $70 shipped. That extra $170 will ensure that the cerakote will adhere for a lifetime, instead of however long this lasts. For me, it's worth the piece of mind that it won't prematurely wear down in 5 to however many years.
Instead of soaking in acetone (very expensive at $20/gal), soak in simple green ($8/gal). The manufacturer lists it as an acceptable alternative.
Can this be done along with the accessories such as a scope or magazine? I mean I'm sure it CAN be done, but is it essentially the same process?
when youre spraying its better to hit it with long continuous shots instead of short quick sprays. Will reduce the risk of splatter or getting the nozzle clogged
will coating the inside of the receivers now screw up the action of the rifle since cerakote is a external coating?
2 years later after the post... how is the Cerakote holding up?
4 years? The 😀
Oh man the suspense is killing me
It’s 2020, how’s it holding up?
BandAid350z would like to know the update as well !?
Brandon M. Probably not great if he hasn’t replied
I mean no offense by asking this, but doesn't the black factory finish need to be sandblasted off? I don't think you'd get the full strength of Cerakote's durability just by painting over the factory finish - A coat of paint is only as strong as its first layer, right? The polymer parts I'm sure will hold/bond with the Cerakote well.
Negative. The porous anodized surface makes a good substrate for all these coatings
it would be a great idea to do this for a battle rifle knowing your going to use the hell out of it
WHEN YOU DO THIS MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOUR TIME . AND DO NOT SPRAY HEAVY! LIGHT COATS OR YOU WILL GET RUNS ON SURFACE I HAD TO RESTRIP PAINT OFF AND REPEAT PROCESS
Everybody's a critic! I think it looks perfect!!
how does this cerakote hold up against Bore scrubber, or heavy gun cleaners?
I have had Cerakote on a 1911for about 2 years now with no bad effects from cleaners.
The way you are spraying is wasting a hell of a lot expensive Cerakote.
I would swear this is the only color they ever sell. Somewhere in a warehouse there is shelves full of dusty (all the other) colors they offer
Mark Hoffman So true! Haha!
I used tungsten. Looks great!
Light coat wait 5 minutes ,light coat wait 5 minutes, and final coat, works best ,not 1 heavy coat.
So glad I found your videos, even 7 years later. I was planning on buying an air gun but the preval sprayer seems ideal- over the years have you still been satisfied with the job the sprayer did on the rifle?
Hey just did the C-series yesterday. It looks great! How long til it’s not tacky?
hey buddyy was that aci already when you was pouring or water
What grit sand paper did you use? Sorry if I missed it in the video
How does Delrin soaked in Acetone fair? Will it eat it up?
I'm sure your grass loved the break cleaner lol
Hey I just bought that lower and my friend was saying I got ripped off, I got it for $117 , he said I can get a lower for just $30? I’m still new to all of this
You get what you pay for. He most likely got an anderson arms lower, they're cheap but they do work fine. More expensive ones fit better and are more precise with their machining which means everything operates smoother
Dylan Simo please send me a link to an Anderson for 30$?? I have 4 Andersons’ . Not one of the was cheaper than 60$. The machine is crude but with a little diy they are just are good as anything else I have bought.
@@brandondyess9973 go to primary arms .com i saw then on sale for 35 around Christmas. Idk if I've ever seen them at 30
brandon dyess there’s ones on gunbroker for 40
Well guys I have officially eaten my own words. Here in Jackson ms. I stopped by the gun show to look.. found a table that was loaded with Anderson lowers individually packaged for 30$.. I couldn’t believe it.. two tables down they was not in a package and that guy wanted 75 a piece.. 🤷♂️
Is cerakote a viable option for a blank aluminum lower receiver that has never been anodized or anything of that sort?
Yes very much so. But the ceracoat, dura coat , alumahyde does like the porous anodized surface as a sub strait but not mandatory.
This cerakote doesn't have to be baked?
Somebody has never heard of building up a coat
Never do this.. Electroplating is the best
@@richard_from_england333 Cerakote is great but it needs to be baked....
Is the handguard still black on the inside?
where did you buy the spray applicator? And is it cerakote or duracoat?
What grit sandpaper did you use ?
All those chemicals make your yard sooo green! Better living through chemistry...
Video starts at 4:50. You are welcome
i know this is an old video, but are you painting your honda civic rims?
stay on point dude video could have been half this length not only that what's up with the horror flick music in the background I was like waiting for someone to come out from behind a building with a machete
how's the lawn holding up after the break cleaned? I did much the same and absolutely killed my lawn. lol
With this cerakote how much paint is it available? As an 1 rifle or 2?
How much cerakote did you need for this whole process?
How many coats? No oven time ?
To be fair, Cerakote specifically says NOT to bead blast, or sand, as it won't achieve the correct surface profile for proper adhesion
My order of cerakote is suppose to arrive today. I also ordered the C-series, how is your cerakote holding up?? Great vid by the way
You made it look easy, I might do the same some day.
yo dude, here is a like for having the same profile picture lol.
8:02 you say Cerakoat an 8:06 you say Duracoat which are you using?
I caught the same discrepancy. Did he ever answer this question? I'm surprised no one else caught this. I mean we ARE watching this for info for our own projects...
Denatured alcohol would be a better choice for degreasing plastic. Break kleen can dissolve some plastics faster than acetone. I almost roached my Marlin 60 trigger group.
Why not coat the buffer spring assembly?
How many ounces of cerakote did it take?
Never perdormed the procedure myself but after watching Cerakotes video and yours there were appx. 10 do/dont's violated that Cerakote spoke on explicitly!!
Oh my.. I want to remain positive, but I'm sure we all know what it's like when we know better because we do it professionally and some guy on youtube is just leading people astray. I'm sure this guy felt he was helping others and perhaps he did. But if you can possibly follow Cerakotes preparation and application recommendations..even on the cheap.. you'll get so much more out of it.
I'll say this. If you can't for whatever reason manage to follow Cerakote's preparation and application steps.. don't use Cerakote. You can get perfectly serviceable results with Durakote, Brownells Gun-Kote, or even a can of Krylon.
How did that grip survive acetone?
Ppl hate but I love my mft stock. Nice video man
How much did the paint and sprayer cost? And where did you get them from?
7$ and you can get them at true value or Amazon. The extra canisters of compressed air are around $3. They work decent as long as you keep the tip clean. Qtip with thinner every 5 min does the trick
+Justin Officer I checked Amazon, Ace, True Value and there were no Cerakote options for $7. The closest is Wheeler's Cerama Coat at $7 PER OZ! Can you put a link to what you used? otherwise, great vids. (and for those who get irritated my the "umm's", take a quick video of yourself ad libbing and see how it "um" goes!
If it's the c series cerakote it can air dry and be good to use after 24 hours.
Or so it was explained to me.
Was the 4oz plenty of cerakote?
here's an idea.... if you want fde just buy your parts in fde originally instead if buying black anodized and then painting them. i could see if you wanted another odd color but fde, how unique
His gun.
Hold down the button...dont stop in between spray because you can get burst of extra paint.
Okay nice job but you didn’t cover the interior. All this stuff should be exterior only. Looks good asf! Not hating at all. You on the money.
were did you get that spray kit from?
Lookin good! Cant wait to see the finished product!
would high heat krylon spray can paint do the job as well??
Yea I ended using a paint used for wheels it turned out ok. Check out my video on my channel.
Well done video. Thank you.
Title says cerakote but you say duracoat. Do which is it? Ceracoat class C or duracoat? There is a difference
It's Duracoat, Cerakote doesn't come in a kit with that sprayer.
+Justin Officer Looks like he used Cerakote C Magpul FDE based on the materials slide at 5:00 into the video. C is not really good for this type of application. Works great on scopes, but he probably should have used the H series. It also looks like he put it on to thick in places and was getting some dry spray. Looks good for his first run though.
agreed. with cerakote, you really need to follow the directions well or you will get a pile of suck.
Some people should be aware that most brake kleen has acetone in it which would ruin plastics
i feel like you lost a lot of product doing it outside in the wind
I agree. He should have done it in his closet with no mask on.
wolfiethebumpireslyr good plan, also, if you huff some glue first its wayyyy better
Actually if you layer the items so they collect the overspray you can get more out of the can.
There goes your grass
you want to destroy your gun keep on listening to this
Nice one
Where did you purchase your parts?
nice work!!
Looks good!! I'm older cerakote now!!!
why not rustoleum cammo paint,
no heat required. i am in
Dry for a week??!
I thought you had to bake cerakote?
Not class C but you can to speed up the cure
Ahhhhh
Would you suggest sanding as well?
you don't have to bake them???
+John Kennedy No he didn't have to, this is the air dried version but there is an oven cured version. I myself am trying to figure out if the oven cured version is more durable in the long run. Have not found a straight answer yet though.
+Ghos7N54 From my understanding the oven cured version is better for preventing scratches and wear, and the air dry is better for heat. The air dry was designed for exhaust parts on a car and such. So if you can bake it on, it is better to do the bake on version. Of course, either version is more durable than most factory finishes.
+Ghos7N54 Or get the bake on version done. Cerakote website provides a page to find applicators close to you. My closest certified applicator is about 25 minutes away in Erlanger Kentucky, for example.
