Glance at a modern civics curriculum in the US. Most states don't do civics class anymore, so you have to dig for scraps in history and social studies classes. Once you've seen that, things make a lot more sense.

We are shocked to see the deterioration that Trump has fostered within your Country. I always admired the Patriotism in the USA because Canadians are not so overt when expressing our Pride. But, Americans, regardless of Partisanship, they love their Country. No one could have told me that so many people would lose sight of their love for country. A majority of Americans feel the same way - if it weren't for the GOP-tilted Electoral College, and the imbalance in the Senate due to the small-population red states having the same representation as the most populous states like California and New York (and the systematic Republican voter suppression and the planned sabotage of vote counting by MAGA election officials), Trump wouldn't have a chance. As it is, we are in greater danger of losing our Constitution and rule of law than we've ever been, and as a student of history, I include the Civil War in that. I am a retired Marine. I served for twenty years to protect the Constitution, and right now I am the most scared I've ever been.

This is why disqualifications for Presidential office should be applied BEFORE nominees are selected. Felony convictions and involvement in insurrection agains the United States, really should be disqualifying, in advance. In my view, being cleared of insurrectionist charges should also be required, if a grand jury indicts a person as likely involved. Nominees for President need to be taken from non-criminal, and non-traitorous pools of citizens. Disqualification standards should protect the Constitution.

The only reason Trump is running for president is in an attempt to stay out of jail. He thought that by announcing his run for presidency, the government would not indict him, which is why he was one of the earliest candidates to ever announce their run for the office. He also brought legal cases in alot of states in 2020 so mail in ballots could not be processed until after the election day ballots were all processed and counted, which is why he was so against mail in ballots. It was all in his plan to say the election was stolen. He had been planning the whole thing for almost a year before the 2020 election. He's been a criminal his whole life and basically either paid his way out of it or dragged it out until the other side just gave up. Now, he's just pushed things too far, and the only way he can stay out of jail is by becoming president of the country again.

I’ve read the appropriate portions of the constitution on the counting of votes. The vice president acting as president of the Senate is mentioned once or twice. His sole responsibility seems to be just to maintain rules of order and to ask if there are objections. So I assume his refusal to act on Trump‘s requests are based on the fact that he was ignorant of what official thing he could do. What am I missing?

On 12-21-2020, a meeting was held in the Oval Office with several republikkkan members of the US House, Rep -ELECT MTG, Trump, Pence, Mark Meadows, and Rudy Ghouliani, to make plans to stop the steal. MTG held a press conference outside the White House to announce it--and brag! (She was not sworn-in until 1-3-2021). Pence should have and could have gone to Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Mark Milley, and others and given them a heads up!

There have always been cult-like political movements that have ended in authoritarian regimes. This is more the norm for a political leadership than a constitutional democracy. Because a constitutional democracy is based on fragile pillars: Education, including political and historical education, a willingness to discuss and compromise, empathy, a sense of responsibility for the community, respect for those who think differently, but also the well-founded assumption that the community respects the individual and guarantees them the basis for a tolerable life.
The constitutional rights and duties, the values that make living together peaceful and fruitful, must be firmly anchored in the minds of the vast majority of people, both citizens and the government.
Achieving and protecting all this requires fortunate coincidences and constant work.
Destroying all this, on the other hand, is much easier and quicker.
America is on its way to the abyss. Even if Harris wins, the destructive forces can hardly be contained.
I hope that in the long run the country will recover from Trump, but currently, I find it hard to believe.

I'll never get over the shock of hearing my boss express her desire to run over protestors the morning of his initial election. A couple years later she called me a "leftist terrorist " and giggled. (I am a pretty buttoned up banker who never discusses anything personal at work).
It was a very traumatizing four years because her mental state tracked along with his. Like banning masks in the office and not disclosing Covid cases.
I only survived because upper management had deemed me too valuable as top producer and let me work remote.
But I'm sure this just goes on by the millions across the country.
I'm pretty glad to have been able to retire, but people have so much more on the line than just the government and democracy.
What I find frustrating and frightening is that our elections seem to be nothing but popularity contests. With all of the evidence of his mental illness, cognitive impairment, criminal record, and dangerous behavior, there is nothing our government can do to disqualify him. I find this embarrassing.

A man whose father in law lives in an Helene ravaged area called a radio station and went into great detail that his father in law wouldn’t take any money, thought that the $750 was all he was going to get, wouldn’t sign up for any aid because there wasn’t any money left in FEMA and if he left his house the government would take possession and declare eminent domain. His son-in-law’s voice was breaking up as he expressed his concern and despair at not being able to get through to him that the information he believed was untrue. His FIL believed every word. He had heard it from Tramp. And when he’s in the WH he’ll fix it all. A tiny piece of my heart just broke.💙💙💙
And it's ludicrous that someone that man's age would believe those stories!! FEMA has been around a long time! It's a process and they've not taken homes for "collateral" for accepting FEMA aid! It's like these people are bewitched!
