The purpose of this device is for playing 2-button 7800 games with a Genesis or SMS pad. Sega pads aren’t wired properly to use both buttons. In addition the wireless Genesis pad on the 2600+ didn’t work for me. (See my 2600+ review when I had to press the button just to move.)
The Mega 7800 adapter is wonderful for playing 7800 games with Sega Master System controllers. The Master System controller has no microcontroller chip. It's just direct wires going to each of the 9 pins. As such, it's super easy to build a real microswitch joystick and two buttons into a project box and have it work on a real Sega Master System and with the Mega 7800, also a real 7800 and 2600, C64 etc. The 7800 has some really great games and deserves a good controller to play over the Pro-Line and now increasingly rare and expensive Europad that still isn't as good as an actual Master System controller.
It’s easy to mod a Genesis controller for full SMS compatibility. All you have to do is open it up and clip the gray wire that’s going to the buttons. This will make it work even on the few SMS games that don’t like Genesis controllers, like Alien Syndrome.
Are you going to do a bespoke episode on your thoughts on emulation? My gaming collection sits on a shelf now, as I play classic games on my CRT through SBCs (Pi3B+, XU4, Rockchip based systems) with high quality controllers like the FANTASTIC 8bitdo SN30. It's so much more convenient to have all of the libraries at my fingertips, and even FPGA systems don't match modern emulation performance and features. I don't think the mini systems count, either, sound and input lag on every one I've tried makes serious gaming on them an unacceptable experience. I'd be glad to share my curated ROM collection and software for the above-mentioned platforms, if you're at all curious. Thank you as always for the great content :)
@@GregsGameRoom Word, I feel the same way. I get that people are passionate about collecting and emulation can be a dirty word. At the end of the day, it's about the games!
Oh, I've played Atari games with a Sega Genesis controller since the 90s....the D-pad just works better than the joystick for certain games, and the Genesis controller is more comfortable and ergonomic overall. Now, the ultimate challenge is to find a friend to play either Mortal Kombat or MK II on Sega Genesis, and beat them using an Atari controller. This means you will only be able to perform low kicks/foot sweeps (unless you're Raiden and do supermans, or Johnny Cage and use shadow kicks), and only a couple fatalities will work. it makes for an interesting handicap!
@@GregsGameRoom it is meant to be used being set on the coffee table or something like that, I had a similar NES Advantage controller which had an arcade style joystick, turbo buttons, and weighted base.
Im confused. Ive been using Genesis controllers for years on my Atari 2600. No adapter is required. If the same rules apply to the 7800 since its backwards compatible with 2600 that means this adapter is a $24 scam that does nothing aside from making the cord a bit longer😄
@@GregsGameRoom honestly I never tried a Sega controller on a 7800 so the adapter may serve a purpose so I was kind of half joking. SMS controllers are hard to find and expensive thesedays!
@@GregsGameRoom which is why I suggest the possibility of just building your own. The wiring is _very_ simple and you can use a microswitch joystick
@SatoshiMatrix1 the dpad is horrible on sms controller, why not just buy a 2024 cx78+ controller (uk one)
7:30 there are 4 versions of 3 button controller 1988 1990 1992 1994, now the 1994 one in red box has the 6 button dpad (not stiff like 1988)

As you noted, the Mega-7800 is loose on the 2600+. I added a very cheap DB9 coupler to the 2600+ to improve the reliability of the connection.
Yeah I’ll probably go the cheaper route and use duct tape…
@4:08 hilarious! 😂😂😂
It just dawned on me…
The 1994 3 button controller has 6 button dpad (4 versions of thr genesis 3 button controller 1988 dpad stiff 1994 dpad is awesome)
What a nice hack! Hope you enjoy it!
Definitely will! Hard to play 2600 games when you’re tethered to a controller!
great video!
Thanks!

I'm not a console only person. Play the game however you want. On real consoles, PC, Mister, or what have you.

Yes..if you can't get the 7800 europad, use a Genesis controller. You don't need adaptor for a 2600...idk about the 7800
The Europads are harder to come by. At least they were before the new Atari re-issued them.
@@GregsGameRoom yes. Wayyyyy better to play with...plus it makes me feel more sophisticated cause its from europe.....lol
Quick question - have you done the beta 2600+ update? Cheers.
I did the first one. After that I couldn't get the 2600+ to connect to my computer.
I need this, but for ColecoVision.
I should get one of these. I wpuld much rather use the Genesis controllers over the European style control pad.
It makes playing 2-button 7800 games more enjoyable.
plug n play comes from computers with new hardware you can just drop in and run the drivers and not have to fuck around with config.sys or anything
Thanks...
@GregsGameRoom sorry little bit of autism there 😆
It's not the controller it's that device your using that's not fully connected

Yeah I had “Genesis” on the brain.
I still don’t know- but I’m here - 😊- you got a like and full watch from me. Hopefully stuff will click someday lol😂 ended at 14:51
