  • Wondering how you can make natural perches for your budgies? In this video, I show how I collect, clean, and install them.
    There are several ways you can make natural perches for budgies. Maybe my video can help you get started with your very own wood perches for your birds :)
    If anything is unclear or if you would like to know more about the process, feel free to ask in the comment section!

    Great explanation video. Thank you.
    You can get some hangers with a hex hole at the end. It makes it easier to screw the hanger in the perch and prevents the hanger from coming out again, while screwing in the wing nut 😉. Just hold the hanger with the hex driver.

    Thanks for making this video, it's gonna be super helpful! Also, if it's not too much to ask, I was wondering what type of cage you have and what toys are in it? I am buying my budgies a new cage and it looks pretty similar to this one but I want to make sure, also they're gonna need some new toys lol

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  Год назад +2

      The big cage that we were using before we got the aviary was gifted to us by neighbors. I never saw it in a shop or online, so I'm not sure which one it is 🤔 It's got wheels, a rounded roof with two sliding doors and a big door at the front. There are four small doors where you can place food containers. I hope you can find something similar! Though I recommend a squared roof, not rounded, because it's more comfortable for the birds to sit on.
      Toys they really like are swings with natural sticks and a thicker type of natural rope, pieces of cork wood, ladders with wooden sticks and colorful beads, coconut halves, colorful plastic balls with bells inside. I hope that helps!

    Im trying to find more sources on crape myrtle because i did fine one site leaning towards unsafe but the quotes on other sites say ‘broadleaf myrtle(not crape myrtle)’ is bad”
    its 2v1 for my search for good and i may have misunderstood the the notes(notes may have been reversed for the myrtles) on the site apposed to them?

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  23 дня назад +1

      Based on my search crepe myrtle is safe. People do recommend avoiding smaller branches that had flowers because they could cause issues. But the other branches are fine. The other myrtle types are seen as unsafe but crepe myrtle is an exception.

      Yes 😊 I saw a couple of websites who weren't sure about the pear tree. But I also read that there were no known cases of parrots dying from being exposed to pear trees, so I think both apple and pear trees are safe 😊 Fruit trees are generally good, but the cherry tree is not safe.

    Can i give them guava perches? Please tell me!!!

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  Год назад

      According to this list guava wood is safe: www.mdvaden.com/bird_page.shtml
      I do recommend washing the wood with a vinegar and water solution or with boiling water. Alternatively you can lay it in the sun for some hours because it kills molds or bake it in an oven (with care) 😊 It's also important that the wood wasn't sprayed with pesticides since they are harmful to birds.

    How can i identify what wood my tree's are?

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  3 года назад

      I sometimes use the leafsnap app to identify plants. I also like to use birch because it's easy to recognize with the white bark. With the last branches I asked my dad because he knows a lot about plants, but I guess that's not very helpful for you 🙃 Sometimes it can help to look at pictures of a specific tree to get familiar with how it looks.

  • @arielwadkins5428
    @arielwadkins5428 3 года назад +1

    My pine looks different then yours, is it still safe ?

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  3 года назад +1

      I researched and the only pine that's not safe is the spike pine, if I remember correctly.
      Correction: it's the pitch pine, not spike pine.
      At this forum they say it's best to use old pine that dried for at least 2 years: budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/10799/good-bad-trees-budgies
      I did take fresh pine and it was very hard to get rid of the tree sap, so I do recommend something else than pine wood 😅

    • @arielwadkins5428
      @arielwadkins5428 3 года назад +1

      @misty_blue  3 года назад

      @@arielwadkins5428 if you want to be absolutely sure, you could go for woods from a birch or apple tree or something else that is easier to recognize. But it's always the question whether you can find trees like that of course 🙃

    What if the branches can’t fit in the oven ? Does anyone have any other tips ? Or just scrub well with vinegar ?

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  2 года назад +1

      Other methods I saw was scrubbing very well or placing branches in a plastic bags for several weeks to kill of any insects that might be there. Placing the branches in the sun for some hours can also help against mold and such. Some people soak the branches in water with bleech, but I personally find bleech too chemical 🙃 With some branches I only scrubbed them well and the birds are fine after months of chewing the branches. I just tried the oven thing to see how it works, but I don't think it's 100% necessary 😊

    • @stardoll1995
      @stardoll1995 Год назад

      If the don't fit and they're wide enough you can fit double-sided bolts on them I'd recommend that you cut them in half and do that if you don't want to then soak them in bleach for 8h+ on a tub, them another 8h+ in regular water, scrub wirh vinegar and pour some boiling hot water on them before leaving them in the sun for a week

  • @abdulmajeedtaher5475

    I have a question to ask.
    Why do we bake perches? Can't we just keep it the way it is as in wild is?

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  Год назад +2

      It's possible 😊 It depends on where you get the perches as well. If they are like in the wild with no pollution and when they are dry without mold etc., I think you don't need to bake them. But sometimes the perches have more contamination and it can be beneficial to bake them. At times there are also harmful mites or parasites that need to be removed. There's also a difference with the wild and a cage or aviary. In the wild birds live in many different trees and they can simply choose another tree when they feel like a tree is not suitable. In a cage they can only use the perches that we give them, so it's important that they are of high quality.
