Great job
If you have a sprinkler system be sure to mark the sprinkler head locations! Don't learn it the hard way.
Good point
I aerated this spring, and understand from your video fall aeration is a good thing… I am on it!!…but will dethatch first… then aerate then overseed, with the Scott’s product you recommend…..
I really appreciate your videos and how you break it down for us lawn aficionados….
Yeah, if you have thatch buildup, remove that first! Hope your overseeding goes well!
What are your thoughts on applying seed to the lawn before aeration? Seems like it might be good to have the aerator push the seed in to the soil and having plugs cover the seed.
Go for it!
Good stuff! have to Aerate next year now. Too much rain lately in NJ
I put the seed down on Tuesday before I left for a trip. Came back and everything was washed out by Ophelia… 🤦♂️
@@TheLawngineer yep I put it down Thursday hopefully it didn't lol
Did ours in the spring Vince - really makes a difference. I'm going to dethatch in a few weeks to drag up all that debris before the snow flies (ugh) two great cultural practices that produce great results. Thanks for the content!
It’s gonna look good! Are you doing a winter pre-emergent?
@@TheLawngineer I don't think so, very little weed pressure on my turf this year with only the spring Prodiamine. I was contemplating a late application of Fungicide. Your thoughts?
@@jaymetheaccountant if it were me, I would put down a fall pre-emergent as well to prevent those winter weeds… mostly poa trivialis. If you get snow mold, you would also benefit from a fungicide app just before it snows.
Is this a Home Depot type of rental? I’m wondering if I can fit it in a RAV4.
Home Depot should have several options. Some models allow the handle to fold down. Those are the ones that should fit in a smaller SUV. They are heavy… recommend putting down a small piece of plywood to protect the car.
FIRST COMMENT!!
But anyway, Vince since you live only like 10 minutes away from me (I’m in Marlton), can I use you Lawngineer experience with helping me set up my irrigation for my overseed? I can’t seem to get the measurements right.

What happened to the lawn? You renovated it last fall. Did some die from heat??
I haven’t been able to dedicate the time to care for it. Been taking care of a sick family member that has taken a lot of time away from the lawn. I never setup my DIY irrigation system either. Ran into issues with disease and heat stress. This is also perennial ryegrass. Even though it’s easy to grow, it’s sensitive to disease pressure and heat. If you can keep up with it, it will look good. But if you fall behind, it will suffer. Honestly, a better grass type for my area would be something like a turf type tall fescue. I’ve considered renovating again, but will continue with the rye for one more season.
@@TheLawngineer I renovated my backyard with TTTF last fall & overseeded in this spring & fall. I renovated my front yard with perennial ryegrass in spring & overseeded a month ago. Overall not too bad, been doing minimum. But will probably overseed front with RPR in Spring.
What PRG seed is your lawn?
5-Iron from United Seed… didn’t have much left and it mostly washed away from the weekend rains 😞. Just ordered more and will put down soon.
Ok, I just planted the same in a couple areas in the back. Now I know what it should look like once grown in.
@@SuperTA329 I can tell you 5 iron is susceptible to heat for sure! I did not setup my sprinkler system this year and paid the price. If you are all setup with irrigation and a good fungicide program, you should be good for the season.
Can the yard be too wet to aerate?
I have a manual aerator but every time I poke it in the ground the cores struggle to pop out of the manual tool so I am worried about getting a gas powered aerator...? Any tips or thoughts?
They seem pretty wet already as it is. Its almost compacting the cores farther into the ground instead of pulling a good core...
Yes, it could turn into a muddy mess and the holes can collapse on themselves.
