    GWS only play in Canberra when their home ground is unavailable due to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. During this period they could easily play their home games at the SCG. This would allow a team to permanently re-locate to Canberra and this should be the Kangaroos, imho. But this will not happen until the Tasmania Devils are entrenched, which will be 25 years, same as the timeframe the AFL initially set for GWS and GCS. When this time is up there may be an appetite for further expansion. North should move to Canberra and the obvious market for the 20th team will be to have a 3rd team in Sydney,

    Great Vid. I've thought for many years it would be a perfect fit. Canberra Kangaroos has a nice ring to it, it's the national emblem, and isn't that far north for the current fans to travel plus they will still play plenty of games in Melbourne. Darwin would be good for the 20th if the AFL can raise the money for a $1.2B roofed/air-conditioned stadium otherwise it's either the Perth Falcons based out of Joondalup which would be the closest existing (West Perth seem most feasible ahead of Norwood in SA) or if they need to grow the game further, think about setting up a team in Newcastle. Cairns doesn't quite have enough people in the region to support a team full time.

  • @BDub2024
    @BDub2024 3 месяца назад

    With territories within Melbourne, clubs used to have a zone in which many people would actually barrack for the club. My understanding is that Bulldogs and North were newer clubs in high migrant areas (especially Bulldogs). North were squeezed by the other clubs and the industrial area to my understanding. Many years ago North should have gone north to the fringes of the metro area and grown a strong supporter group there. That's what they should have been doing in the 1960s like Saint Kilda did. Saints have managed to grow a fan base by being more into the bay area as a result. Hawks had the advantage of being east and there being no clubs further out. Of course they also won premierships which helps. North have still the opportunity to give back to the league and really work into a community of non AFL fans and try to bring the people to the game. They get big payouts from AFL so should give back.

    North Melbourne isn't going anywhere, especially with the redevelopment that is currently taking place in North Melbourne and the Arden Street precinct and there is no way Canberra would accept them as their team because they burnt the city 20 years ago, and as a North Melbourne supporter who lives in Canberra, I'm reminded of this on a regular basis. North Melbourne is financially secure (debt free and profitable) and are building a strong AFL team that should begin climbing up the ladder next season and before our recent troubles our membership numbers were better than or equal to the Dogs, Saints and Dees so hopefully with some upcoming success our membership numbers will be comparable again.

  • @matthewhagiliassis

    This is such a stupid video, you do realise that North Melbourne are debt free and you cannot relocate a team that is financially stable nor you cannot fold a business. • @Andy-o2f

  • @limbus66

    This is a non-starter. The AFL doesn't have the power to relocate North Melbourne, the decision can't be made without a majority member vote, which will obviously never happen, and they have no leverage to force a move because of North's financial position. Not every club can be huge, one has to be the smallest, and if anything happens to North the people who think there's too many teams in Melbourne will just come after Footscray next, it never ends. And it's bullshit, 9 teams in the biggest footy city where the game was born isn't too many, it's just fine.

    North need to relocate in the next 10-20 years cos their club is going nowhere right now and has been for the last 25 years or so since their successful 90s decade. Yes relocation is hard for supporters to go through but financially speaking it’s the right choice, look at Sydney? they went from a struggling small club In Melbourne to becoming one of the most popular and successful clubs in the AFL just by moving to Sydney. Canberra Kangaroos is a nice fit due to the name being the national animal of our country, plus this gives the Roos a new marketing region in the Riverina and Canberra region who are big on footy over there so having a club represent that area would be good aswell.

    This is something that really should've happened 25 to 30 odd years ago when the AFL was forcing struggling Melbourne-based clubs to make the tough decisions. North just so happened to be a high-performing team throughout the mid to late 90s, which kind of gave the club a false sense of security. Once the memorable players such as McKernan, Carey, Martyn, King, Pike, Archer, Pickett and Bell, gradually began to either retire or move onto other clubs, the club retreated back to the stupid "Shinboner Spirit" claptrap, which just gives the club a poor-man's image that people like to pretend to say is appealing when in reality it isn't.
    They may well have become a great relocation story (like the Swans)... or not. We can only speculate. But it's not like the last 20-odd years have been anything to laugh about with them stubbornly remaining in Melbourne. Nevertheless it's too late now.

    How does it resemble previous clubs like Fitzroy and South Melbourne? (other then the logos) you just said it than moved on.
    The fact that there isn't a team in the capital, again irrelevant because what does it have to do with North Melbourne as a club? why not pick another random 'struggling' club?
    The stuff about us rejecting a move to the gold coast, then playing in Tassie due to crowd numbers, do you just pull this shit out of your ass or what? - We play games in Tassie as a part of a deal with the AFL to develop the area (like the Hawks) but somehow this is a reason why we should move to Canberra?
    You bring up South Melbourne again for no reason with zero context, they were in a world of debt and the choice was move or fold, north on the other hand, isn't in debt. So what's this similarity you keep bringing up? crowd numbers? Size of Geographic area?
    I'm not even going to ask about 'helping even out the distribution of teams' just laughable and, THE NAME AND THE COLOURS!? I mean come on man.

    North have burnt Sydney (pre-Swans... it's what provided the idea that a Sydney team might work, if given long enough), Canberra, Tasmania and the Gold Coast. They have been offered chance after chance, but their supporters simply refuse to accept reality. Which is sad, but true.

    And who do you barrack for champ? It is always someone who follows the 'BIG' Vic clubs who try to relocate North. You can all get stuffed we are not going anywhere. We might be small but we are a heart and soul club, not an AFL owned money making franchise. Spare me your economic rationalism, what would you really know about North's situation? Do what's best for the game bullshit? Do what is best for the AFL bottom line you mean.
