The Montreal Canadiens name you referenced at the beginning makes more sense if you know the backstory. Basically it was founded to be a club for the french speaking population. Back then the term Canadien was often used specifically in reference to french canadians. That is why the team's name is always spelled the french way (Canadiens) and not the english way (Canadians)
Anyways, great video! Glad I stumbled on to it :)
Melbourne untied sounds like a soccer team
Edit: I commented this before he said it
Some AFL ones:
West Coast - an enormous region non specific to Perth, disregards Fremantle also being on the West Coast
Western Bulldogs - west of what? what do you even call them formally... Western Football Club?
Greater Western Sydney - bland uninspiring focus grouped name to try to appeal to as big a market as possible
Footscray Football Club is still the formal name
Not a bad rebrand but just a terrible name. The west coast fever in netball
Most Victorian junior basketball players wouldn't support Melbourne Tigers in the NBL (the only team in the state at the time) because they would play against the seperate (and rather successful) Melbourne Tigers Junior Basketball Club, which is another reason they changed their name. Doesn't mean they couldn't have picked something better though.
Referring to the Dolphins It was the NRL officals themselves who many are from The Manly Sea Eagles that never allowed a town name as they will play games at various towns between Brisbane and Rockhampton. Their training grounds is Dolphin Oval in Kippa-Ring a suburb of Redcliffe. 2 of their home games are played at Quad Park on the Sunshine Coast along with 3 games at Dolphin Oval and the rest are at Suncorp Stadium (Lang Park). Before they entered the comp they we're a feeder club for the Sea Eagles.
The 3 netballs teams and not two we're added to the cash strapped Netball Australia comp.
All teams we're state based until 2017 when The Melbourne Storm put the Sunshine Coast Lighting for Queensland, In Sydney the Great Western Sydney Giants AFL club prop up the Giants netball team and for a short time The Collingwood AFL team propped up the Magpies netball club and dropped out after two seasons.
The Washington Commando's is very stupid unless it was formed by the marines or army. It shows no heritage what so ever . The California team thing is confusing for me.
I know the English Football like to call themselves city or united instead of the Red Devils that us Aussies calls them for Man United.

I can tell you from the protests I saw, lots of native Americans wanted the Washington name to change.
Texas Rangers is like a real thing, so they were trying to evoke the name and ethos more than anything. Same with Florida Panthers. The Florida panther is a real animal; it’s just NOT the Miami panther.
gotta understand the lore for the canadiens its a good name because if the story behind it
Totally agree on this, mate. Thoughts on new AFL team being called Tasmania instead of Hobart?
i probably won't matter since tassie is to small to have a 2nd team
I actually would rather Tasmania as the name since they need to unite the whole state. Being called Hobart would appear arrogant and would annoy those in the north which is half Tassie’s population
@@geohawk7 i was born in launceston and people would be pissed if they named it hobart
Interesting. Thanks for the feedback.
@@Mysticscubing As someone from Hobart, I prefer they name the team after Hobart :).
although realistically if they don't call them the devils due to some silly copy right of animal's name, I think were all gonna be pissed.
I have followed Washington football for about 35 years & the sellout from the REDSKINS to the Commie REDS is as bad as it gets. THE ANGELS, ANGELS is the stupidest name of all. Here's another notable mention, AFL team Footscray Bulldogs changed their name to the Western Bulldogs. This is a club in a national competition that is based on the eastern side of the country (in the Melbourne western suburb of Footscray), yet calls itself Western Bulldogs. That is as geographically unrepresentative as anything in sport. With a name like that they should relocate to Perth. I still call them Footscray.
Man your goated
The NRL Dolphins don't have Redcliffe in their name for the NRL Side because they wanted to continuing fielding a team in the Queensland Cup but QRL rules meant that if the NRL Team called themselves the Redcliffe Dolphins they would not have been allowed to field a side in QCUP as QCUP does not allow reserve teams so as a Result you have The Dolphins in NRL and Redcliffe Dolphins in QCUP
Interesting. Still sucks though they couldn’t also be Redcliffe in the NRL
Why not go for Moreton Bay Dolphins, Northern Dolphins or pick another animal found in the local waters like Redcliffe Dugongs?
Northern Brisbane Dolphins could work.
The Edmonton Elks of the CFL had to change their name from Eskimos to Elks for similar reason to the Commies and yes Edmonton Football Team as a placeholder.
Speaking of CFL at one point in an 8 team competition they had two teams with very similar mascot names - the "Saskatchewan Roughriders" and the "Ottawa Rough-Riders"!
@@jagobbin2 What?!! How did that even happen?
Pretty piss poor take on the Redskins logo
Why?
Anaheim Angels and Washington's new names are godawful lol
in washingston case they really should have put more thought into their rebranding like the exeter chiefs
I haven’t heard about the Exeter chiefs so interested in what they did
@@geohawk7 the previous exeter team crest was of a native american chief. they rebranded last year to have the crest become a saxon chieftain instead.
weirdly the fans still to the stereotypical ''indian chant'' lmao
The Washington redskins got their name from their Native American coach who got permission from his chief to use the chiefs image as their logo
Texas Rangers works since it’s named after the police force but the only issue is if you call them Dallas since some people there are kind of like the Anaheim situation.
I don’t get why the dolphins didn’t even have a location, they should of called themselves the Brisbane dolphins or the Sunshine Coast dolphins or just go with the Redcliffe dolphins
Yeah, Redcliffe, Moreton Bay or North Brisbane was the way to go, hopefully they fix it soon
It’s because the dolphins are from Redcliffe, which is just outside of Brisbane
@@BrisbaneBroncosfan67 ohh fair enough
Cleveland Guardians?
All of these are actually good team names when compared to the Indian Premier League names
fr tho lol
What about when North Melbourne changed their name to "The Kangaroos" or we had "Sydney Tigers", "Sydney Bulldogs". "Sydney City Roosters" kinda made sense since they were the closest club to the CBD but "Sydney Roosters" is a bit arrogant too.
The roosters never officially changed from Eastern suburbs roosters to Sydney roosters
Western United anyone?
Nah, Brisbane Roar
@@BrisbaneBroncosfan67 Lions FC could not use the name Lions because of the AFL team so they went with Roar for the A-League team
Fun fact: In February 1971 the Boston Patriots changed their name and rebranded to the Bay State Patriots
Two problems though…first issue was the NFL hadn't agreed to it.
The second issue was that "Bay State" Patriots was shortened to "BS" Patriots, and their were constant jokes about that for obvious reasons lol
2 months later after the announcement they changed it to “New England Patriots” instead
Why did they even change from "Boston" anyway?
@@mikespearwood3914 Moved from Boston to Foxboro Stadium and wanted a new location name
@@JWex-jy7sk Foxboro is closer to Providence the Capital of Rhode Island then it is to Boston
The Washington Bullets changing name to The Washington Wizards.
I think I heard that one was something to do with the crime in Washington at the time so I guess kind of makes sense
@@geohawk7 yeah. i'm a long time NBA fan and the Bullets jerseys were so dope. but i can understand the name change.
Saskia would have made a much better logo for the Commies.
Anaheim is a part of the Greater Los Angeles Metro Area
Doesn't matter. And ironic you justify that with the logo you're using. Are you suggesting Tottenham should rebrand too?
What about the West Coast Eagles then ? It's always been bothering me since there's another team on the west coast... I mean I get the name originally when the were the first and only AFL team in WA, it made sense and was a great name actually, strong identity and all - THE team from the West. But now ? Now Freo's got a stronger identity in my opinion because they're actually from somewhere. The West Coast name is too vague, too broad... only adds to the image of a pretty generic club.
Now come on, Geraldton, Broome and Port Hedland deserve representation.
@@paulorocky Are they really represented by the Eagles though ? I mean it's still a Perth club. Are towns in WA feeling more connected to them than if they were simply called Perth Eagles ? Genuine question. It's actually interesting.
Western Bulldogs
North Brisbane Dolphins. Why is this so difficult?
I will say I feel the Commanders was just a clearly missed oppritunity. I dont care about the claims of racism around it but more that this is the team representing the national capital. Like you got the Nationals, Capitals, DC United and Old Glory DC. Which are mostly good names that say something about the city they represent. Redskins was just some random name from a team based origionally in Boston. Like you couldnt pick anything more interesting? Its just a sad missed opportunity
Senators?
@@geohawk7 I think that'd probably overlap with Ottawa in the ice hockey but I'd personally go with Generals. It sounds tough and still keeps to the national theme. But that's just me
Dolphins should be North Brisbane Dolphins imo or just go back to their old suburb
Western Bulldogs from the AFL like who lives in western💀
Personally I LOVE ‘the Dolphins’ it’s so left field and unique.
