  • “I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick *ss. And I'm all out of bubble gum.”
All I'm going to say is: watch "They Live." (if you haven't already)
The iconic sunglassess scene from this cult classic is a transformative moment. Our protagonist puts a pair of special glasses and the world changes before his eyes-revealing hidden messages and the true faces of the aliens living among us.
This film, a sharp critique of unchecked capitalism and mass media, is - so I thought - a perfect opener for today's deep dive into Monopoly Go.
This "game" is a carefully engineered trap, a profit machine disguised in the innocent trappings of Monopoly without you realizing it. If only we had the magic spectacles to spot the wolf in sheep’s clothing, the Monopoly GO maker wouldn't have slyly pocketed $2 billion in less than a year…

I can relate, I quickly realized after playing the game that it was basically a coin master copy with monopoly themes. The mobile game doesn’t carry any value to it as the original board game did, especially after learning the history behind the game. It’s just another micro-transaction game, it made me really miss the days where I could play monopoly on the gameboy and it was closer to being like the board game. You've overlooked one of the biggest and most important regulations on casinos, and slot machines in particular. Slot machines MUST be set to a constant payout rate and changing that rate to make it either richer (more frequent payouts) or leaner (less frequent payouts) must be authorized by a gaming commission. This is absolutely critical because the very best way to get a person hooked on a behavior (slot machine, gaming app, or anything else for that matter) is to start with a very rich payout scheduling (even operating at a loss) and then slowly lean it out over time until the person is addicted and hemorrhaging money. Every casino on the planet would do this given the opportunity but don't because they'd be penalized beyond its utility. Because that consequence does not exist for them, every single gaming app does it as well.

      Exactly!
So many people don't understand what Monopoly is about either, they just like to say its about capitalism. (But that's the typical stupid leftist retard mentality.)
Monopoly is more about demonstrating what happens when you don't have strong laws against monopolies and anti-competitive business practices.
The thing about capitalism is, the people have the choice to boycott companies who have bad business practices. Allowing and having monopolies takes that choice away and makes you beholden to greedy corporations.
Socialism/Communism is a monopoly itself, just a worse one that is owned by a government. You don't own it, nor does the "community"; the gov owns it since they make all the rules and they control the access. The government can then also abuse their power for any reason... which means they can exclude you from the community if they don't like you - example: Hitler in WW2 Germany disallowed Jews from not only owning guns but also from working in the gun industry... in addition to murdering them of course.

I've designed multiple published board games, and your video made me reflect on how we use dopamine triggers as lovingly implemented tools to enhance the fun of our games. And those same tools that can make people smile and laugh and play (push your luck, random reward cycles, community and social interaction), can drive people to poverty, addiction and loneliness the moment those interactions become monetised. Just tested this game recently, motivated by news about marketing budget and revenue. For me the most "amazing" part is how well the predictive analytics / personalized offers are tuned. This game basically tries to profile you (or use an already known profile of you from Facebook / Google) as fast as possible to make you pay just a little bit. As soon as someone buys even just the lowest offer it starts to go really hard to milk that juicy sunken cost fallacy in you. Time pressure / FOMO on the left, Peer pressure / social pressure / competition on the right, battle pass like systems, collections to complete. And at the end it's a game about pushing one button, for boards of different colors.

Truly baffling that it's rated E for everyone with the insane level of dark tactics in it as you pointed out. It gets even worse since they all use some form of EOMM (Engagement Optimized Matchmaking) to control match outcomes so that you win or lose. They make you lose so you're more likely to pay to get access to better gear, but also make you win sometimes so you don't think the game is "P2W" and quit (quitters don't become payers). This is just controlled pay to win and manipulation to get you addicted and spending maximum amounts of money. Modern gaming at this point is mostly fking plague.

Playing such games with ADHD may be either a blessing or a curse: a curse _if_ it manages to hook you in and gets your hyperfocus, while also being really inattentive and constantly starved for dopamine anyways; or a blessing because you're too inattentive to invest any real effort into playing such things and quit very early on, so it makes those dark tactics ineffective against you.

HONESTLY YEAH. I tend to phase in and out of interests in games and this alone usually steers me away from purchasing anything. At least nothing super big. I usually stick with smaller things that're under $10, and even then it's me being like, "do I have the money and how invested in this am I currently?" I can stick around for a few months but still tend to avoid buying stuff, haha. I am Immune to the Game Addiction /hj

Yep, same here. On the plus side, sunk cost fallacy is barely a thing for me. I've put literal years of my life and hundreds of dollars into IRL hobbies, then stopped overnight because I found a new shiny thing or one of my tools broke. I tend to /initially/ intend to go back, but then that almost never happens.
It's not always a good thing, I've dropped positive habits and projects just as easily as unhealthy ones. But in the case of non-chemical addictions I consider it a blessing.

I recently noticed I was getting bombarded with Monopoly GO ads as I was playing Beatstar and then I get recommended this video lol. I’m grateful that my usual reaction to a wait timer is to just close the app and that my ADHD causes me to forget about the game for days and only sees me returning when I’m bored out of my mind at the doctor’s office or something. Though I’ve always been a bit wary of mobile games in general because the ones my friends play all seem to be some form of gatcha game or something like this, gambling in disguise.

Also, they had a good game for a while in order to get reviews up, then slowly made it more and more addictive and harder to get their stickers... now the 2 million reviews are 5 stars.. meaning anyone second guessing will only see a top rated product. They know every strategy possible to be scumbags. These sort of companies should be heavily regulated and its insane how gambling has so much regulation and protective laws for people who spend money but these games do not. Things need to change

Funny how the Pokemon games had to have a casino where you spent in-game money only (and was rigged in your favor) removed to avoid a T/PEGI 12 rating simply because it was in the style of a slot machine, while these games can use all the addictive tricks of REAL casinos to make billions (sometimes even using the slot machine imagery!) and get away with an everyone/9+ rating and no oversight.

I've got a strict rule when it comes to f2p games with microtransactions: never spend more on it than i would be willing to pay to buy it if it was an actual game. Usually this is around ten quid or so, and I refuse to go above. (And thats for games like Genshin, ie it has an actual game to play not just dice to roll). But the actual concept of it and how it preys on people still makes me uncomfortable. You should always remember: if its free to pay, thats because you are the product. Great video!

      I have much stricter rules.
      - There cannot be pay to win mechanics. (Pay To Progress is still Pay To win, as is EOMM - Engagement Optimized Matchmaking.)
      - There cannot be gambling mechanics.
      - The game must also work offline. (Offline functionality must not be greedily limited, being able to play the game even after servers have been shut down is a requirement. If the game has a "progression" system, it must work offline and progress at the same rate as online if not faster. Separating online progression is not good either.)
      - There cannot be any woke bullshit.
      - The game must be well optimized and not contain a ton of game breaking bugs.
      - Full priced games must not contain microtransactions.
      - Cheap/Free games (under $15) can maybe have some cosmetic microtransactions.
      - All microtransactions must remain "micro" (under $10).
      - There may not be excessive amounts of microtransactions. (In other words, your game must have a reasonable amount of content.)
Basically this rules out most modern games.
