Mesa had that guttural grunt. Brutal.
EVH has the glassy modern attack. Another flavor of brutal.

Eh, they benefit from a Tubescreamer being on for sure. I remember I used mine for rhythms on a track, and forgotten I'd turned my TS9 off, and when I listened back, I was like "There's something underwhelming about this..." It was lacking that bite that OD pedals give. Had to re-do the tracks.

@@Nick-rf5we that wasn't actually what I meant to say with my comment, but I'll tell you this: Marten Hagström said he tracked Immutable using the preamp or a 100w EVH III into a mesa roadster power amp driving EVH cabs. So I wasn't too far off with my statement.

  • @heatnationwpb

I actually prefer the Mesa Boogie, however slightly. They're both dope, but the palm-muted chugs sound better on the Badlander. The 5150 just sounds a little brittle to me when chugging.

Nice comparison. I own a 5150 IIIS and a Tube Screamer in front of the third channel isn’t really necessary even with the gain below 12 o‘clock. The third channel has more than enough gain stages and diode clipping. For the Badlander it makes sense to get rid of some of the bassy flubbyness. The second channel of the Stealth is really what distinguishes it from the basic 5150 III, since it’s first gain stage is the first triode of the third channel with a different coupling cap and voltage dividers following.

IMO the Mesa has plenty of natural low end that really wouldn't benefit from a resonance control, so I don't consider that a negative. The EVH benefits from it because it's a little thinner by design. With a boost, it's the opposite... the Mesa benefits more from a boost and the EVH has so much gain on tap that it doesn't need any help other than maybe to tighten it up a bit. Both are crushing but I lean towards the Mesa (own both as well as other Mesas and EVH's).

EVH 5150 III 100w el34 & 100w stealth have a secret function. Blue gain pot effects a gain structure of red channel. Try change blue gain while you are in red channel. When pot is higher it cuts the bass and gain is stronger. When pot is lower bass are boosted and gain reduced. For almost same gain structure as 50w version or original 100w you must set blue channel gain pot on 3,5.

Is it possible that the talk mice was not muted while playing or a norther second room mic was active? The Amp tones are both sounding a bit like there is a Flanger included to my ears.
But nice new segment by the way!

Both amps are completely viable, you'd do well to have both in your studio, but coming from someone who doesn't have any amps yet, I'd probably buy an amp from the 5150 line, just because of the sheer versatility in them. That and at least 70% of my favorite tones were made with some variation of that amp.

I dig my 5150, great for gigs, it’s as heavy as a small car, thankfully for caster wheels. But an excellent amp.

Mesa for me (if I could afford it) EVH sounds much thinner and compressed to my ear

the EVH is half the price of a badlander here in europe so just a no brainer for me... but i also prefere the EVH 5150III 50w stealth and the good old much underrated roadster 🦾🦾

The difference is so small & insignificant through my Samsung Galaxy's speaker. I wish I could tell. Both sound fine.
