    Couple of suggestions. Firstly, leave a slight gap between the wrappings around the drum to avoid them riding over each other and creating a bump. Secondly, when sanding a board that has a cup, put the cup-side down to avoid it rocking as you put it through. This makes it quicker to get a level face and reduces the number of passes needed. Great build though.

    Additional advice... during the process of making your cylinder true, an easy way to finish the process is to take a good known piece of flat stock and apply a sheet of rough grit sandpaper to it. Hold it against the bottom plate and repeatedly run it from side to side as you tighten your tolerances up.
    Another nice feature you could add would be to swap out your cylinder system for one that uses replaceable drums. This way, you just need one set of bearings and you can swap out the drum that is installed on the bearings easily. This would allow you to make spare drums to swap out at will, keeping an extra of your most often used grit on hand along with fine grits for when you want to have a more finely finished surface.

    It's alright build on a budget, but for small pieces like shown it seems faster with a sharp hand plane to me and less dust.

    • @gregoryhalye8907
      @gregoryhalye8907 5 лет назад +6

      A good sharp hand plane may do the trick for those pieces shown, but what would you do for such small pieces that happen to be wood burl or gnarled and knotted wood? A hand plane will likely chip bits of wood fiber out with every pass, no matter how sharp you make that blade or which direction you approach the work from. The surfacing drum sander is a feasible way to approach this issue and achieve acceptable results with a minimum of time and effort invested.

    • @johnt.chambers4204
      @johnt.chambers4204 5 лет назад +2

      @@gregoryhalye8907 There is a time and place for a planer and a time and place for a sander. I see General Zugs' point, but every tool has its purpose. I do as much metal work as wood work and I have found that in most applications for metal a drum sander is as good as a surface grinder unless you need a precision grind. I always enjoy homemade tools.

    Пропущен момент, каким образом извлекается барабан для крепления наждачки. Неужели раму частично разбирать? Так там же некоторые узлы на клей посажены.
    Посадка подшипника на подмотку из проволоки и эпоксидку совсем не внушает. Биение на валу невооружённым взглядом заметно. После оцилиндровки барабана жуткий дисбаланс должен получится. Удивлён, что только шкив на валу болтается, но это биение компенсируется упругостью ремня. Сам барабан ровненько крутится, станок не скачет по столу. Повезло, наверное. :)
    А так, вполне годная конструкция. Дословно копировать не буду, но исполнение некоторых узлов возьму себе на заметку.
    Видео это плюсанул. В закладки себе сохранил. Сейчас пойду посмотрю другие видосики Автора. Если такие же интересные, пожалуй даже подпишусь. )))

    • @kentavr68
      @kentavr68 5 лет назад +2

      крепление барабана - самый непродуманный момент этой конструкции. Каждая смена наждачки - растягивание опор в разные стороны, чтобы его вытащить. Можно, конечно ее по месту менять, но как-то не камильфо, на мой вкус.

    • @sergeydovzhenko9259
      @sergeydovzhenko9259 9 дней назад

      @@kentavr68 Друзья, не надо вытаскивать барабан для закрепления наждачки. Я повторил конструкцию, наждачка легко закрепляется по месту. Кстати, очень хорошо крепить на двухсторонней тонкой липкой ленте. По краям барабана налепил по обороту такой ленты, а на нее и барабан потом навиваешь наждачку. Держит отлично и никаких шурупов не надо. Наждачку поставил 80 grid.

    Going to be making one of these, saw a few things I have to change, but this is far safer than a thickness planer or joiner.

    • @gregoryhalye8907
      @gregoryhalye8907 5 лет назад

      Dont be fooled by how "safe" it seems to work without those sharp planer blades. If you put a workpiece in the wrong side, it can grab it and fling it out the other side with high speed... it can try to do the same with your arm, too! Please always exercise caution in any DIY home build and know what you are getting into before you start.
      I like how he incorporated a dust collection system and at least a partial guard for that exposed belt. I do not like how the first part of the build made me think he was going to feed the work into the drum from the front of the grinder, as that would have "grabbed" the work pieces and flung them away. Feeding the drum from the back constantly makes it push back towards the operator, but it should always be under that operator's control. (This is mostly just general advice to all, not directed at you. Cheers!)

Now comes the surprise: at 6:57 (and 7:12 - 17:46) your rolling bearings are threaded on both ends of the shaft. What is true: first or second?

    I congratulate you and thank you for your beautiful work, goodwill, above all in sharing your knowledge in woodworking ... to tell the truth comes to give "anger" not to say envy how easily and accurately you develop them! I am preparing the material to try to build the sander and I noticed that in the parts that constitute the two sides where the drum will be fixed, despite the clarity of the dimensions of his project available in pdf, I could not identify the distance of the hole where the shaft will be installed. drum with respect to the top of that piece - it only has the left side distance information taken from its left edge to the center of the hole but I did not find the dimension that determines the center to top spacing of the hole. Is it possible to inform her? Grateful and congratulations on your channel.

      Hello, thank you for your comment. The distance you ask, it doesn't matter. The top cover must not rub against the drum. 45 mm is suitable.
